Dr. Wendy Stephan, Health Education Coordinator at the Florida Poison Information Center, joins Lisa Keeler and Jan Thoman for another episode of Florida Blue's Prevention Intervention podcast!
In Phil Lee's own words, Florida Blue is a "health solutions company" -- not just an insurance provider. On today's episode he explains what it means to focus on preventive healthcare, rather than trying to address issues once they've already started, and how having access to healthy food is such a key component in that endeavor. In the past four years alone, Florida Blue has provided over 180 million meals to residents across the state. And they plan to continue that mission through close partnership with Feeding Tampa Bay, and building infrastructure that can better connect people with the food they need not just to survive, but to thrive. See more of the magic made possible through our partnerships by following @FeedingTampaBay on social media, and visiting our website to get involved firsthand!

On this episode of "The Dish on Health IT," hosted by Ken Kleinberg and Jocelyn Keegan from Point-of-Care Partners (POCP), healthcare technology enthusiasts were treated to an engaging discussion with a special guest, Alice O'Carroll, Interoperability Product Manager at Florida Blue. Ken Kleinberg, the senior consultant and innovation lead at POCP, kickstarted the episode by extending a warm welcome to listeners, emphasizing POCP's pivotal role as trusted and independent health IT consultants. He expressed their unwavering dedication to uncovering the latest healthcare technology news and milestones. The episode promised an illuminating exploration of some of healthcare's most significant challenges and opportunities from a payer perspective including:• CMS MANDATES IN HEALTH IT: Ken introduced the episode by shedding light on the far-reaching impact of CMS mandates and other policy initiatives within the healthcare technology space. The hosts emphasized that merely adhering to regulations falls short; healthcare stakeholders must aspire to achieve more.• ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE (AI) IN HEALTHCARE IT: The episode delved into the transformative potential of AI in healthcare but perhaps used in a more mundane way than expected. • ENHANCING DATA QUALITY IN HEALTHCARE: The hosts underlined the paramount importance of elevating data quality standards within healthcare. They highlighted how this mission not only benefits healthcare providers and payers but also empowers patients and enhances overall healthcare outcomes.• PATIENT CONSENT MANAGEMENT IN DIGITAL HEALTH: Among the critical issues discussed was the management of patient consent not only across the ecosystem but also the need for the patient to be able to grant access to pieces of information and not their full record. Most importantly, patients need a way to revoke consent at any time. Consent is a challenge demanding immediate attention within healthcare technology.Alice O'Carroll's introduction was met with enthusiasm as she joined the podcast as a distinguished guest. She donned multiple hats, including her role as the Interoperability Product Manager at Florida Blue and her status as one of the champions of the HL7 Da Vinci Project—a remarkable collaborative initiative. Alice passionately shared her personal dedication to healthcare interoperability, tracing her journey into the realm of interoperability mandates and their profound impact. She underscored the unique role of these mandates in reshaping the entire business model of health IT. She explained that she had a deep belief that interoperability can usher in meaningful change, benefiting not only patients but also all stakeholders in the healthcare ecosystem. At Florida Blue, Alice and her team stood at the forefront of CMS mandate compliance, actively participating in industry workgroups like Da Vinci to ensure alignment with industry standards and drive positive transformation. The discussion swiftly transitioned to the impact of policy developments, particularly CMS mandates, on payers in the healthcare technology landscape. Alice offered her perspective, tracing the lineage of mandates back to CMS's Meaningful Use initiative. She painted a vivid picture of a rapidly evolving regulatory landscape, touching upon mandates such as the transparency and coverage mandate and the no-surprises act. Alice emphasized the vital role of industry involvement in effectively influencing and navigating these transformative regulations.Ken questioned the philosophy of merely checking the regulatory box and explored why organizations, including Florida Blue, should invest additional time and resources in healthcare technology. Alice passionately responded, underlining that the healthcare technology industry's business model is undergoing a profound shift. She explained that compliance with mandates like USCDI creates opportunities, such as payer-to-payer data exchange, but real value emerges from leveraging data to benefit members, lower costs, and enhance quality. The trio ventured into the thrilling domain of artificial intelligence (AI) in healthcare technology. Ken and Jocelyn recognized the potential and challenges AI presents. Alice joined in, envisioning AI's role in transforming unstructured data into structured data, thus enhancing data quality and interoperability in healthcare technology.Alice and Jocelyn delved deeper into the pivotal topic of data quality, acknowledging the healthcare technology industry's historical shortcomings. Alice stressed the need for a universal standard and the challenges posed by unstructured data. She discussed how regulations accelerated data exchange but also emphasized the significance of data stewardship and accountability in healthcare technology. This dynamic conversation encapsulated these crucial healthcare technology themes, painting a vivid picture of an industry undergoing unprecedented transformation. As Ken, Jocelyn, and Alice shared their insights, they collectively illuminated a path forward—one where interoperability, data quality, AI and consent management converge to progress healthcare towards a more patient-centered approach. The podcast culminated with a valuable reminder from Alice and Jocelyn for healthcare technology professionals to actively engage in industry workgroups and partake in the ongoing transformation of healthcare data sharing and interoperability. They championed a collaborative approach, where both business and IT partners collaborate effectively to navigate the evolving healthcare technology landscape. In closing, Ken expressed his gratitude to his guests, Jocelyn Keegan and Alice O'Carroll, for their passionate insights and engagement in the healthcare technology discussion. He also extended his thanks to the audience for tuning in and invited them to stay updated with future podcast episodes across various platforms as the dynamic field of health IT and healthcare technology continues to evolve.

Now, here's the rundown of what we talked about: Updates from last week: Updates from last week:Regarding their favorite Deluxe/Deluxe Villa Resort, we had some additional responses!Cat writes: “Old Key West was huge and we liked it very much, but 3 BR villa at Bay Lake Towers is hands down our favorite. Park views (amazing at fireworks time) fireworks, spacious and open design, monorail access... absolutely wonderful”.Pam chimed in as well: “Boardwalk. Love theming, view of the Boardwalk. Excellent location between HS & Epcot. As well as convenient to multiple restaurants including those in Beach/Yacht club. And the Salon at the Beach Club.”Sheila said: “Bay Lake Tower especially with the Ellis family.”Cindy said: “Bay Lake Towers!”John chimed in: “Only have stayed at Saratoga Springs, Wilderness Lodge, and the Contemporary. Out of these three, Wilderness Lodge was my favorite. Loved the grounds and the boat transport to the campgrounds Contemporary and MK. Saratoga Springs much larger layout. Was in one of the quiet buildings. That was nice, but only time I can say I didn't like the walk, but it was really not too bad about 5 to 10 minute walk to the main building for food. Contemporary, loved the monorail. Got to meet my Captain there, Captain Hook. My best bud for the villains. I can't put my finger on it, but the Contemporary just was missing some of the magic. Don't know if it is just that it is one of the original resorts and feeling its age. Looking forward to GF and the Beach Club in the next 3 years.”Cheddar from the Big CheeseMike: Officially, as of October 1st, the “Neighborhoods” at Epcot will be official. As a reminder, there is World Discovery, World Celebration, World Nature (all part of the original Future World section) and World Showcase, which remains the same. World Discovery will have the attractions like Test Track and Guardians of the Galaxy; World Nature has attractions like Living with the Land, and World Celebration has attractions like Spaceship Earth.Brenda: Great News! The Main Street Confectionary reopened on September 29th! Take a look at some of the new treats you can get here!Sophie: We came across something that we didn't know about, and it opened on September 1st. Faced with food and fuel shortages, Cubans have begun unprecedented protests against the country's communist government. President Biden's response could help boost Democratic support among Florida's many Cuban American voters. The party has lost a number of key elections in the state, thanks in large part to lackluster support among conservative expatriates who hope to see Democrats take a harder line against Cuba's communist government. Personal passions matter in whatever endeavor that women take. It’s the driving force to keep them going. In today’s episode, Bonnie Walton speaks of personal passions and how busy women can prioritize them. Bonnie is a care manager for Florida Blue, a part of Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Florida. The exercise makes her feel like she’s able to prioritize her mornings. Personal passion matters Even with distractions, Bonnie finds a way to still make her daily workout. The world can be chaotic at times but when Bonnie starts the day with something that she’s passionate about such as working out, she doesn’t get as anxious and upset when something out of the ordinary comes up during the workday. Working out has been part of her passion and since she left the Army, Bonnie decided to stick with it. For busy women, you may want to do your passion slowly. For Bonnie, she started off slowly and she tells herself to do her best every time. One of her major accomplishments was winning gold in an Army event which led to her earning the German Armed Forces Proficiency Badge. There were a lot of physical hurdles they went through including swimming, shooting, track, pull-ups, and more. Her workouts help her in becoming a leader. It improved her posture and it gives her a more confident look. The physical exercise and training back in the Army taught her a lesson to keep pushing and moving forward even in hard times. For those who still haven’t found their passion, there are a few things you can do. You can always discover new things with just a click. There are social media groups you can join and communities you can be active in. It’s also helpful to do brainstorming with somebody else. It could be a peer, a family, a friend, and others. In this health care podcast, I speak with Steve Blumberg, VP of practice transformation for GuideWell Health, a subsidiary of GuideWell. How’s this for an interesting career trajectory? Steve spent the last decade working on population health and value-based care delivery ... on the provider side. Recently, he transferred over to the payer side, working for GuideWell Health, which is the health services arm of GuideWell, which is part of a family of companies including Florida Blue. So, a payer, in other words. I wanted to find out a bunch of things from Steve, but the main one is this: How do—if they, in fact, do—payviders improve care for patients? Or what does it take for an organizational structure to drive Triple Aim results? Going into this conversation, here is what I was thinking about: Payviders have access to longitudinal data (potentially) that siloed entities will certainly not. They also have a goal to keep care affordable in a really real way, especially if the patient/member/client is on the ACA (Affordable Care Act) marketplace and shopping for premiums. My big concern with payviders, though, is whether they’re an “HMO in drag,” as they say. On the other hand, payers and providers, in the most cynical sense, have wildly divergent goals. Search #medtwitter any day of the week—you will find a galaxy of tweets wherein doctors complain about payers—to just get a tiny sense of those wildly divergent goals. Do separate payers working with separate providers offer a kind of check and balance? A historical knock on this hypothesis is the inarguably crappy outcomes for chronic conditions that US patients have the privilege of paying comparatively ridiculous sums for. I couldn’t tell you whether those crappy outcomes are a result of the separateness of payers and providers or some other factor, but so it is. Here’s the short version of one of Steve’s main points: It’s not about control. It’s about connection. It’s about being able to connect with patients over their continuum of care. It’s also about how consumers and employers are increasingly trading out choice and broad networks for an assurance of quality. You can learn more at guidewell.com. Steven Blumberg serves as vice president, practice transformation, for GuideWell Health. In this role, he is responsible for developing and implementing strategies for the further establishment of a high-quality, economically effective clinical system across Florida. He also provides guidance on value-based care and population health models. Prior to joining GuideWell in June 2019, Blumberg served as vice president for value-based care at Baptist Health South Florida, where he led the strategy and implementation for Baptist’s population health and value-based care efforts. Prior to that, he was senior vice president and executive director of AtlantiCare Health Solutions, the New Jersey division of the Geisinger Health System, where he was responsible for population health, the organization’s provider physician group, and home care and hospice continuum services. Earlier in his career, he was chief planning and business development officer at UHealth–The University of Miami Health System. Blumberg also held leadership roles at UF Health–Shands Healthcare and Baptist Health Jacksonville. Blumberg has been active in community and professional organizations, including serving on the boards of the Ronald McDonald House, Community Hospice, and the Northeast Florida Health Planning Council. He has also served nationally on the Premier Population Health Steering Group and on the National Institute of Standards and Technology’s Baldrige Board of Examiners. Blumberg holds a bachelor’s degree in business administration and marketing from the University of Florida and a Master of Business Administration from Florida State University. This episode of the podcast features Part 2 of the Flipping Florida Series with Dr. Fergie Reid, Jr. Dr. Reid talks about the strategy for flipping the state and its 29 electoral college votes blue, based on the work spearheaded by him and his father in Virginia, helping to flip that state in 2019. He explains the simple and intuitive concept, which is to register more voters and run candidates in every race, and why this strategy has been historically underutilized by Democrats. We talk about how Florida is ripe for the picking, with its many races in red districts uncontested by Democrats, and how Texas, Georgia and North Carolina are not far behind. And he speaks about the civil rights work of his father, Dr. Fergie Reid Sr. who ultimately became the first African American member of the Virginia state legislature since Reconstruction. To hear the first podcast in this series on flipping Florida, listen to https://newfacesofdemocracy.org/how-to-flip-florida-blue/ (How to Flip Florida Blue with 140 Florida Blue Project.) She’s a mother, farmer, Executive Director and a force to be reckoned with in the blueberry industry. Brittany Lee, Vice President and Farm Manager of Florida Blue Farms, talks with us about her very full but rewarding schedule of being the Executive Director of the Florida Blueberry Growers Association. This first-generation farmer shares her knowledge about machine harvesting and pushing the limits in her operation towards technology.
Janelle Christensen is a professor and head of the Florida Democratic Environmental Caucus. Margie Stein is a political activist who has found her niche in fundraising for Florida state races. Together, this dynamic duo are spearheading an effort to turn Florida blue by taking a page out of the Virginia playbook that helped flip that state in 2019. Their program, called 140 Florida Blue Project, has recruited democratic candidates to run in all 33 of Florida's state legislature races in which the Republican candidate had been running unopposed. We talk about why it matters to chip away at the margins in red districts, building democratic infrastructure and momentum for future election cycles and the path to winning Florida's 29 electoral votes for Biden. This is grassroots activism at it's grassiest in arguably the most important swing state in the country, and you will be amazed at what these two have pulled off in a few short months. Floridians are out of work in massive numbers- either laid off due to the coronavirus or furloughed with a return to work uncertain.
