Chris McCarron burst onto the scene in 1974... he won his first race in February of that year... and 546 more the rest of the year... setting an all-time record at the time. And he was just getting started. He would go on to be in the winner's circle an astonishing 7,141 times amassing over $264 million dollars in earnings... the most ever. Born in Boston, McCarron was introduced to America when Frank Deford wrote a feature on him in Sports Illustrated in January of '75... and from there, Chris rode into history. He won the Kentucky Derby in '87 on Alysheba, and again in '94 on Go For Gin. He won the Preakness twice as well as the Belmont twice. 5 times he won the Breeders Cup Classic. And in 1984, he rode John Henry for the final 14 times of the legendary horses career, when at the age of 9, he won horse of the year. In 1977, he took his talents to the West Coast and Santa Anita and was part of the greatest pack of jockeys ever to ride at the same time. Willie Shoemaker, Laffit Pincay, Jr., Eddie Delahoussaye, Gary Stevens, Kent Desormeaux, Sandy Hawley, Alex Solis, and Pat Valenzuela... and McCarron more than held his own, winning 21% of his races in his storied career. Now, 20+ years removed from the saddle, McCarron joins us on the Past Our Prime podcast to talk about that feature in SI... what Deford wrote about him that he didn't care for... how his older brother Gregg, also a jockey, called his parents and said Chris was too scared to ride horses... how it felt to win the Derby with Alysheba and how John Henry did the impossible at age 9. He's part of horse racing royalty. A king in the Sport of Kings. Join us for a trip around the track with an all-time great... Chris McCarron on the POP podcast. 00:38 Last weekend's Rachel Alexandra (G2) at Fair Grounds in New Orleans. Race 12's odds had us asking: What do people know about Hidden Connection? We liked La Crete and North County, but… 2:35 La Crete was injured and has since had what seems to be successful surgery. Props to jockey Joel Rosario. 4:09 Goddess of Fire surprised us—When will we learn?! Trainer Todd Pletcher always has a reason for placing a horse somewhere. 4:43 Trixie did WIN modestly by betting on #7 Turnerloose and #9 Awake at Midnyte to come into the money, mostly because she is coming to adore Nyquist's kids (Nyquist is out of Uncle Mo, another great sire). 5:39 North County's odds at 8-1 made Weej curious, but the move up in class was rough. 7:12 Race 13 was the Risen Star G2, a star-studded race with champs-in-waiting Pappacap, Smile Happy, Zandon, and Epicenter, among others. We were HIGH on Nyquist kid Slow Down Andy and his nice G2 win against Messier at Los Alamitos, but he stunk here! 8:36 Had to put a buck on Russian Tank, just in case that huge long shot came in. (Spoiler: Nope) 9:09 Trafalgar may be dead to Trixie. Smile Happy didn't walk away with a win, but Placed and is still legit. 11:03 Holy Noodle Casserole! Epicenter killed it! His last humiliation by closer Call Me Midnight seems to have fired him up to dominate. Watching the young horses mature is so satisfying. Post Risen Star, we scan the rearranged Derby leaderboard. 13:55 Covering the Hyacinth Stakes, a Japanese Derby prep, and also the G1 February Stakes in Japan. We got the year's first Breeders Cup Classic win-and-you're-in entrant, 5 year-old colt Cafe Pharaoh, the defending and still-champion of this $2.2M race. 15:44 Moving onto FAT POINTS/FAT PURSES prep races at Oaklawn in Arkansas this weekend, February 26th. We have the Rebel Stakes (G2) at 1 and 1/16 miles on dirt for a purse of $1 million. For the fillies, the Honeybee (G3), a $300K prep for the Kentucky Oaks. 16:49 Weej reviews the Rebel field, including Baffert colt Newgrange—about whom we have Derby-related questions—and Un Ojo, Texas Red Hot, Stellar Tap, Ben Diesel, Chasing Time , Barber Road, Ethereal Road, and Dash Attack. 23:59 Onto reviewing the 6 entrants for the Honeybee, including Optionality, Yuugiri, Secret Oath, Ice Orchid, Free Like a Girl, and Red Queen. 24:53 We love marquis Saturday racing, but… it's never where we earn the mo$t as bettors. Spectacle is fabulous and exciting, but we love a long shot coming in during a weekday claimer! If you haven't checked it out, we just added a new episode—right before this one—to the #historyandscandals playlist (S2 Ep 8). Of course, it includes coverage of the Baffert/Medina Spirit disqualification from the 2021 Kentucky Derby and the consequences. But in that episode, we also examine the loooong history of doping and the Jockey Club's eerily modern concerns about it, as well as cases of a few more dirtbags (in our non legally-binding opinions): a crooked vet, perpetrating pharmacist, and roving doper, um, trainer. We love making jokes, but love

The world's only blind cricket commentator - Dean du Plessis - tells us he is now losing his hearing and discusses the impact it is having on his life and career. Du Plessis says not being able to hear properly is more frightening to him than the sky dive he completed in 2007 and the journey he took on the back of a motorbike that was travelling around three hundred kilometres an hour. Du Plessis is Zimbabwe's most recognised voice in cricket but says he may need to consider moving to a country were conditions are better for blind people. However, he is staying positive and he even sings a bit of his favourite band - Def Leppard - for us. Thalea Smidt joins us in the week her team – Mamelodi Sundowns – completed an historic treble, including them winning the first ever Women's African Champions League. The midfielder tells us becoming champions of the continent is amazing and the reality of the achievement is still sinking in. She also believes the South African sides success could open the door for more girls and women to play football in Africa and discusses how some of her team-mates overcame the doubts of their own families to become footballers. One of the world's best netballers Lenize Potgieter speaks to Sportshour's Maz Farookhi about her decision to temporarily make herself unavailable for selection for the South Africa national squad, after the team's doctor diagnosed her with a major depressive disorder. Potgieter discuss her relief at her diagnosis and why she went public with her struggles. In Sporting Witness, we go back to 2009 and remember when Zenyatta became the first – and only – mare to win the Breeders Cup Classic, one of the most prestigious horse races in America. Zenyatta was hugely popular with the public; she was as well-known for her dance moves in the paddock as she was for coming from behind to snatch victory at the last moment. And on a busy day of sport, we discuss the Women's Big Bash League final with Melinda Farrell, Tim Vickery looks ahead to the Copa Libertadores final, Jonathan Overend is at the Emirates ahead of Arsenal's game against Newcastle United in the Premier League and Jamie Broughton brings us the latest from the UK Snooker Championship. In November 2009, Zenyatta became the first – and only – mare to win the Breeders Cup Classic, one of the most prestigious horse races in America. Undefeated in all but one of her races, Zenyatta became wildly popular with the public; she was as well-known for her dance moves in the paddock as she was for coming from behind to snatch victory at the last moment. Proudly brought to you by All About Sunday and Kalooki Sportsbook, Emmet Kennedy, Naomi Tukker and Lucy Russell-Hughes review the big talking points, controversies and impressive victories from the 2021 Breeders Cup.  In the 1922 landmark work “Ulysses” James Joyce wrote “From the sublime to the ridiculous is but a step”. That sums up the 2021 Del Mar Breeders Cup, as Bettors and Punters were robbed of a winner with the omnishambles that was the Juvenile Turf. The Team discuss this in detail, while also reflecting on a fantastic two days for Godolphin, Japan making History - with a little help from Champion Jockey Oisín Murphy - Europe dominating the Breeders Cup Turf with the first four and the sublime performance of Knicks Go in the Breeders Cup Classic. For The Love of The Game

You don’t have to be a math wizard to figure out Math Wizard was a great claim. Originally claimed by previous connections out of the same $16,000 maiden claimer that saw Maximum Security win by over 10 lengths, and again out of his next start, John Fanelli and trainer Saffie Joseph stepped up and tagged Math Wizard for $25,000 off a 18 ½-length win on January 31. New owner Fanelli (who won a seven-way shake that day) had obviously made a shrewd purchase and when he allowed some partners like Jose Hernandez of Wynwood Thoroughbreds to buy in after the claim, their modest investment went on to finish second in the Ohio Derby, third in the Indiana Derby, then pulled off a 31-1 shocker in the Grade 1 $1,000,000 Pennsylvania Derby in his last start. Those connections now find themselves entered in the Breeders’ Cup Classic at Santa Anita, running for the winner’s share of $6 million. If the ride seems too wild to believe, just listen to how Jose Hernandez describes it, with awe and gratitude in his voice. Originally a fan of horse racing in his native Dominican Republic, Hernandez, whose father was a small-time horse owner, enjoyed the weekend races with friends and family as a social event. When he moved to the United States in the late 1980’s, he followed the big races and trainers from afar, not allowing himself to attend live racing for fear of being bitten by the ownership “bug”. When his wife finally took him to Calder for their anniversary (on Kentucky Derby weekend, of course) in 2016, he couldn’t resist and had soon joined a group that claimed a filly named Esken Lady with Joseph. She won her first start by daylight in 1:35, then again on the class raise before finishing second in a Claiming Crown race that year. After his self-imposed ownership exile, Hernandez is now running his own Wynwood Thoroughbreds partnership, which is growing quickly, and credits Horsebills with helping him run his business. “The level of transparency allows our partners to see where they stand on a daily basis.” We appreciate the endorsement, Jose, and best of luck this weekend!

The only person to ever—and we predict the only who will—win the Kentucky Derby with Giacomo, the Breeders' Cup Classic with Zenyatta, and be inducted into the Rock ‘n Roll Hall of Fame, Jerry Moss talks in depth about his career in music and racing, the early days of independent A&M Records with Herb Alpert, working with legends like Peter Frampton, The Carpenters, Cat Stevens, The Police, the Flying Burrito Brothers, Billy Preston, and Carole King, his long friendship with Sting naming horses after his family and albums, giving out $100 win tickets that paid $5,000 when Giacomo won the Derby, the joy Zenyatta brought to race fans, and the only filly to win the Breeders' Cup Classic.
