The complete audiobook is available for purchase at Audible.com https://n9.cl/sltdb7 The Food of the Gods and How It Came to Earth By H. G. Wells Narrated by Martha H. Weller H. G. Wells first published The Food of the Gods and How It Came to Earth in 1904. He called it “a fantasia on the change of scale in human affairs… I had hit upon [the idea] while working out the possibilities of the near future in a book of speculations called Anticipations (1901).” This novel is about a group of scientists that invent food that accelerates the growth of children turning them into giants upon becoming adults. There have been many B-movie adaptations. This is Wells at his finest with a science experiment gone wrong.

In 18th-century France, the royal pharmacist treated Marie-Antoinette's headaches with chocolate. This sweet even appeared in European hospital prescriptions! Medicinal use of chocolate goes back thousands of years: its main ingredient, cacao, was used to treat snake bites by ancient Mesoamerican societies, for instance. Today, we see headlines about chocolate supposedly being a health food – but is it really? And can blocks and bars be a platform for good in other ways? In this episode, Lee Tran Lam talks to nutrition expert Saman Khalesi, chef Juan Carlos Negrete Lopez and proud Wiradjuri woman and chocolatier Fiona Harrison.

Two stuffy English scientists, always looking to further their scientific knowledge, create a substance called Herakleophorbia, which in its fourth incarnation – known as Herakleophorbia IV – has the special ability of making things increase greatly in size. As the scientists begin experimentation on some chicks, the substance is misused by some “country folk” who don't take it seriously and soon Herakleophorbia IV is running rampant throughout England and then across the globe, creating giant plants and animals that wreak havoc on the land and then the people. In this episode Chris begins his exploration of the Vedas--the oldest religious holy book we know of--the holy books of the Hindus. We read a series of hymns, which put tremendous emphasis on a ritual drink called "Soma," which seems in every way to be an ancient psychedelic brew. Soma was the food of the gods and was connected to both the gods and to immortality. It was consumed also the the Vedic priests who report out-of-body experiences, unfathomable joy and the ability to commune with the divine power. We discuss if Soma was psychedelic and how these mystical, psychedelic experiences relate to the development of religious ideas. Enjoy :)

Fun usually ensues. How would 19th century British folk handle a situation of their children growing to the size of 4 story buildings? If you have ever asked yourself this very specific question than 'The Food of The Gods and How It Came To Earth' by H.G. Wells is the perfect book for you. The book raises some interesting questions one of these being: are there inventions/discoveries that can or should be un-invented?I was very excited after reading the initial pages and the basic premise of the plot, but was let down as the book went on. Fiction writers have a difficult job of choosing where to take the story from the initial conception and I personally wanted to see it head in a different direction than where it did go. The book wasn't all bad though as it contained one of my new favourite fictional characters, that being Cossar the engineer. To learn more about him and why I liked him, listen on.Hope you enjoy, Kyrin out!If you would like to support the channel, you can grab yourself a copy of the book here! https://amzn.to/3huqbh3Connect with Mere Mortals:Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/meremortalspodcast/Support the show
