In this episode Jacob and James discuss the epic 1992 film The Last of the Mohicans, which provides a fictionalized account of the 1757 French siege of Fort William Henry.
After the French defeat of British forces led by George Washington in 1754 and Edward Braddock in 1755, things did not improve for the British. In 1756 and 1757, French forces captured the British forts Bull, Ontario, Oswego, and WIlliam Henry, while the French navy blocked a British attempt to capture Louisbourg. Meanwhile, in London, the King searched for a leader who could turn the tide in North America. Join Jacob and James as they tell how Britain was driven to the brink of collapse in the New World.

Katie and Michele are back on location along with producer D Scott for another episode of Psychic On The Scene. This time, the crew is at Fort William Henry in Lake George, NY. The sight of a huge massacre during the French and Indian war, Fort William Henry is famously "haunted" and the location did not disappoint. Jack, a tour guide that works at the fort tells the Psychic on The Scene team about not only the history of the fort but also shares some of the experiences that he's had while working there. He also shares some of the stories from other employees as well. We aren't sure if you'll be able to hear it on the recording but while we were doing this episode, there were a lot of noises coming from the stairs that were right by where we were all sitting. Pay close attenting because there could also be some "extra" voices during this episode.Enjoy!

Fort Ontario, situated opposite Oswego City at the mouth of the Oswego River, was built by the British in 1726 and destroyed 30 years later by the French. The British reconstructed the fort in 1759, abandoned it after 37 years in 1796, but used it once more in the War of 1812. It was finally demolished at the end of that war, leaving only its ramparts as a testament to its history. Fort Plain is located by the junction of U.S. 90 and N.Y. 5S, Montgomery Co., near modern-day Fort Plain village. In 1776, Patriots built fortifications that enclosed a farmhouse and its immediate area for about half an acre. The Tories later destroyed the fort in 1780. Fort St. George, constructed in 1776 by the British, is located near Mastic Beach and Smith's Point Bridge on Long Island, a few miles away from William Floyd Parkway. The Patriots captured and destroyed the fort in 1780, leaving a few parts that still survive today. Fort Stanwix was an Indian trading post built by the British in 1725 in the heart of Rome City in Oneida County. The British enlarged it in 1758 but abandoned it later in 1769. Both sides of the Revolutionary War used the fort separately at different times. In 177, A bloody battle between these contesting forces occurred here. Nothing of the site has survived. Gardiners Island was an anchorage in the early colonial period and was located half of the way of the forks on the east of Long Island. The British established a small naval base in Gardiner's Bay during the Revolutionary War. German Flatts used to be the location of Palatine settlements that stretched for about ten miles in the Mohawk Valley near modern-day Herkimer, Herkimer County. The Palatines moved into the area circa 1730 only to have their homes destroyed first by Iroquois and later by Tories during the Revolutionary War. The ruins of hundreds of Palatine homes can still be seen here today. Ruins. About 1700, the Huguenots came and settled New Paltz, located somewhere near N.Y. State Thruway, between the areas of Kingston and Newburgh in Ulster County. Plenty of Huguenot brick and stone homes are still found in this region. Ruins. Remnants of early settlers' homes can still be found on N.Y. 5S near Indian Castle close to Indian Castle Church somewhere part of the way between Fort Plain and LittleFall. Many of these residences were destroyed during the French and Indian Wars. Some remains of Mohawk village dwellings can also be found in this vicinity. Johnstown, first settled in 1760, can be found at N.Y. 67 and State Road 30A, Fulton County. Many homes and other structures were destroyed here during a major battle in 1781. The massive destruction was great, as evidenced by the ruins of its old buildings still visible in the area. Kingston was founded in 1615 by Dutch settlers in Ulster County. They constructed Fort Esopus, which was first intended as a trading post and later became known for its prosperity. Despite the fort being destroyed in 1777 by the British, people rebuilt a new town over the remnants of old buildings. Lake George Village is found by the lower end of Lake George, Warren County, over on U.S. 9 and I-87. American and French troops fought in a great battle here in 1755. After winning, the American forces constructed Fort William Henry not far from here. The French launched an attack in 1757, held off by the Americans who surrendered after five months of fighting. The Indians allied with the French massacred every single American and dumped their corpses in a lake which came to be known as Bloody Pond, located close to the present town. Also nearby are Forts Gage and George, built during the Revolutionary War. Minisink Ford, over by the Delaware River just opposite Pennsylvania, Sullivan County, is located in the township of Lackawaxen in Pennsylvania, Sullivan County. On July 22, 1779, the Patriot forces' entire contingent was wiped out by the Tories and their Indian allies. The exact area where this is found is at N.Y. 97, where it me --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/treasure-revealed/support

Almost a decade ago, Nikita Nakonchnyi spent his summers working as a cook at a resort in Lake George. Three weeks ago, he was a typical 20-something living in Kyiv, Ukraine, and teaching digital marketing. This week, the 27-year-old helped blow up a bridge in a small village outside the city with molotov cocktails and drums of diesel to keep Russians from invading. On this episode, we catch up with Nakonchnyi and discuss the situation in his country. Also on this episode, we'll talk about a completely different kind of cocktail—the take-home kind from bars and restaurants, which may soon become permanently legal in New York. Finally, we talk to "As the World Turns" alum Yvonne Perry about her new role as an intimacy director for theater, television and movie productions.

At the southern end of Lake George is a fort know for a large siege & massacre in the 1750's that ended up being in a well know book, this fort ended up being haunted by more than just a few military men. Who do you think still haunts this place?

The seeds of what would eventually become the Seven Years War or French and Indian War, a truly global conflict, were planted the moment Europeans landed in North America. Empire building was hungry work, and the British and French in the mid-18th century had become ravenous. In North America, the two empires frequently butted heads and regularly used Native tribes to stir up trouble or fight proxy wars. Initially, the French explored deeper into the heart of North America than the coast-bound English. So they staked a larger claim to the land, built far more numerous (and amicable) alliances with Native tribes, and most important of all, the French had chiseled together a lucrative, intricate trade network. The British daily had ships filled to the gunwales with people and goods landing up and down the easter seaboard and planned to smother the French through sheer weight of numbers. A fight over which national culture would dominate the New World was in the offing; all that was needed was a spark. As the war progressed, events seemed to favor the French. Victory after victory fell the French way and the British were on their heels. The Siege of Fort William Henry and the massacre that followed appeared to be one more proverbial nail in the coffin. The short siege of the star fort on Lake George was small in terms of scale, but the aftereffects were massive. The propaganda coup that the massacre represented for the British was considerable. Never again would the Native American tribe's swarm to the French banners. The power of the colonial militias became abundantly apparent as they answered the call in the wake of the siege. Pitt's sea-change leadership in London went on to turn the war around in favor of the British, and soon the Seven Years War would be over. Of course, colonists would not remain content for long, war's are expensive, and the British Empire wanted the Americans to pay for their share. In Episode 97, Jeff Belanger and Ray Auger explore the ruins of Fort William Henry near Pemaquid Beach, Maine, in search of a Native American ghost who dates back to the time of the King William’s War. A horrible atrocity took place on these grounds, and they’ve been haunted ever since. Though many people know about the haunting, many have misidentified the ghost here.
Mark covers some key historical events that took place in March, the month that comes in “like a lion” and goes out “like a lamb.” We see that this may depend upon where and when. George Washington in 1777, may have felt threatened by the British lion. Or the British soldiers in the French and Indian War had a rough St. Patrick’s day at Fort William Henry ten years earlier. In the Civil War, one might say Nathaniel Banks went into his Red River Campaign thinking he was a lion, but definitely finished as a slaughtered lamb.
This week we the British set out their plans for 1757, and suffer another disaster at Fort William Henry.
Two months in and I'm really liking this new schedule of a quarter per topic. Those 90 days feel like enough time to dig into a subject, but also to keep moving so that I get to explore several throughout the year. I'll stick with this for the foreseeable future, and in this episode I share what some of my future topics will likely be. Plan of Fort Carillon in 1758 The main feature of this episode is another interview with designer Volko Ruhnke. I say "another" because he was on my podcast a year ago to talk about Alesia, while this time he's on to talk about the French & Indian War. Though he's probably best known now as the originator of the COIN system, Volko's first published design was a CDG, Wilderness War. We get to talk about that, as well as an entirely new game system he's working on. I don't know if this is a "scoop" or what because I had not heard of this before, and cannot find anything else about it online. Enjoy! Volko tells about this new system in the context of describing the time he had playtesting games at San Diego's wargaming convention, SDHistCon. I missed going this year...maybe I should make it a priority in 2018? Wargaming at BGG.con One of the reasons I didn't make it was that I went to another gaming convention in November, Boardgamegeek's BGGcon. This was my fourth time, having been to the very first (2005), and then three of the past few years (just missed when I lived in France--2016). Although primarily a eurogame event, I'd say perhaps 10% of the gaming is wargaming. Since BGGcon is such a large event (2500+ people over 4+ days), even 10% is quite a bit of wargaming. I did some of that this time, too. A plan of Fort William Henry, published in 1765 I've got one more designer interview planned for the final F&I War episode, next month in December. At that time I'll also recap the games & movies I've enjoyed. Then we'll put a bow on 2017 and look forward to the new year. -Mark Fort Oswego Remember to follow along & chime in on my geeklist/discussion) for all of my French & Indian War explorations. In the final quarter of 2017 I'm concentrating on the French & Indian War. This first episode is an introduction, giving me a chance to take my listeners along for this ride in history. Perhaps you'll jump onboard and experience some of these games or movies with me. Hand-drawn map by George Washington, accompanying a printing of the journal he kept of his 1753 expedition into the Ohio Country. I realize that what I'm calling the French & Indian War is really the North American theater of the Seven Years War (sometimes nicknamed World War Zero), when France and England battled for global dominance throughout the newly expanding colonial world. There were conflicts in mainland Europe, too. I'm not exploring those--I'm just looking at the conflicts of Quebec, Fort William Henry, the forks of the Ohio, the siege of Louisbourg, and so on. However, my reading about the French & Indian WAR (singular) has quickly reminded me that this conflict from 1754-1763 was preceded by a few other wars between roughly the same sides: English colonies versus the French & Indian-allied forces. I have a suspicion I'll be looking into those, too. One thing that jumped out at me when I created this subject's geeklist is how many good light/short/hybrid wargames there are on it. From Quebec 1759 (Columbia's first block wargame in 1972!) to A Few Acres of Snow or 1754 Conquest (published in 2011 & 2017, respectively), there are a bunch of great choices for wargamers like me that prefer the lighter end of our hobby. I'm still curious about larger hexmap wargames, and the famous CDG on this topic, too. Map of Louisbourg and its artillery batteries in 1751. In the podcast I get to talk about the games I saw & played at the recent GMT Weekend at the Warehouse event, too. This is practically in my back yard (a 3-hour drive), so I hope to continue to go to this event once or twice per year. Next month I'll also be going to BGGcon in Dallas, where I'll be playing both wargames and euros. Hope to see you there!
