Film maker, social activist and artist David Rocco Facchini returns to Strung Out to discuss with Martin his years practicing Freeganism. According to Wikipedia, Freeganism is an ideology of limited participation in the conventional economy and minimal consumption of resources, particularly through recovering wasted goods like food. Freeganism is often presented as synonymous with "dumpster diving" for discarded food, although freegans are distinguished by their association with an anti-consumerist and anti-capitalist ideology and their engagement in a wider range of alternative living strategies, such as voluntary unemployment, squatting in abandoned buildings, and "guerrilla gardening" in unoccupied city parks.Facchini relates how he was able to live for a year mainly on food that was thrown out in area dumpsters of Chicago during his social experiment with Freeganism. We learn about Freeganism. We hear Party Mom's first call to the show. Rauce gets a new puppy. Jim does word puzzles and manages to piss off a bunch of people and more!
IN TODAY'S EPISODE: FREEGANISM - PART 1 Hello, hello my dear friends! I'm so happy to see you again for this second episode dedicated to the topic of freeganism. Freeganism, as we saw last week, consists in salvaging edible food from the bins. But do you know if doing so is legal in France ? What do the police do when they find someone going through the bins on the streets ? In today's episode, Léa will tell us the dos and don'ts when going through the bins. She'll also tell us some of her best anecdotes of her freegan life. If you want to find out more about it, listen to today's episode. Listen to today's episode to find out more about it. IN TODAY'S EPISODE: FREEGANISM - PART 1 Hello, hello my dear friends! Today, we're going to talk about a topic that'll probably sound surprising to a lot of you - freeganism! Are you familiar with this concept? Freeganism is an activity that consists in going through the bins to salvage any product that's been thrown away but can still be consumed. Indeed, in France, close to 10,000 tons of food are thrown away every year, among which a wide part is still edible. The goal of freeganism is to fight food waste. In order to have a better understanding of the situation, I've asked my friend Lea to give us her insight. She's been a freeganist for about 10 years and she's quite aware of the problems related to food wastes. Listen to today's episode to find out more about it. Do you want to book a lesson with me ? Freeganism is a lifestyle philosophy focused on adopting alternative means to modern capitalism for the satisfaction of material needs. Even though we are not freegans, their philosophy and lifestyle could still offer us an interesting perspective into how we can prevent ourselves from falling for the narrative of "rich=happy". I will also discuss how freeganism doesn't necessarily kill the capitalist economy. What is freeganism?Freeganism is a portmanteau word made up of the words “free” and “veganism”. As you may already know, vegans reject animal abuse. They avoid consuming products which are derived from, or have been tested on, animals.Meanwhile, freegans choose an alternative lifestyle which limits their participation in the conventional economy. Where possible, they avoid buying things in favour of recovering food from other sources. The basis for this anticonsumerist ideology is that primary needs such as eating, sleeping or having a place to live should be freely available to all. Freeganism’s ethics also extend to environmental values linked to responsibility and sustainability.A person may become freegan due to their personal convictions, or by necessity. In any case, the practice opposes overconsumption by recovering food surplus from households and businesses, from trash cans, dumpsters and other waste receptacles.Freeganism is often associated with “dumpster diving”, a practice which basically means searching through dumpsters, containers and waste storage locations to find food which is still suitable to eat. Those who do it consider the health risk to be low and some even say it boosts the immune system. Depending on the type of food, and the place where it is recovered, the risk is acceptable. If it’s in a public location, there’s no legal problem at all as waste is considered as not belonging to anyone. Therefore it can in theory belong to anyone and everyone. However, some food chains take a negative view towards freeganism for fear of getting a bad reputation or on management orders. Some supermarkets destroy their waste on-site or spray bleach on it to combat freeganism. Recovering food can therefore sometimes be problematic. This episode we discuss the practice of urban foraging. That act of harvesting wild grown food is a practice as old as humanity. From society's earliest days, we have depended on the fruits, nuts, berries, and herbs we've found along the way to secure our food supply. Although, a recent surge in popularity of foraging in cities and a lasting legacy of racist and classist laws often prevent some groups from foraging in public spaces. This episode unpacks why and how we forage and recommends some interesting research papers that discuss an ideal future of foraging laws.
Adam and Sam are 25-year-old freegans. They eat food going to waste and buy vegan only when necessary. They haven’t bought groceries since November 5th, 2016. They describe themselves as thoughtful and mindful. They try to focus on what’s important and cut out things that don’t matter in every aspect of their lives. They accomplish their purpose by repurposing food and objects going to waste to mindfully appreciate what they have and fight a culture of rampant overconsumption. Adam and Sam see consumerism, mindlessness and waste are interconnected. Roughly 40% of food goes to waste, thrift stores are packed with perfectly good clothes, and usable furniture gets thrown out every day. With climate change already impacting everyone, Adam and Sam see buying new products as destructive. Adam and Sam don’t buy things for the sake of having variety but rather out of necessity. As a result, they are appreciative and grateful for what they already have. Listen as we talk about: How their partnership has been necessary to a year without groceries How taking new routes home from work leads to treasures and makes life much more interesting Valuable tips on how to live frugally How they've created lives of congruency with their purpose Stories of how they find and prepare their food How their mission has spilled over to their friends and family Why repurposing is a resource to help you live a better life Privilege they acknowledged in their choice to live the freegan life Why it's important to really examine if you need something. On this episode, we look at the 2013 Indie Spy Drama, The East Directed by Zal Batmanglij. The film follows corporate intelligence operative 'Jane' (played by co-writer Brit Marling) as she is tasked with infiltrating a radical anarchist cell who have been attacking high profile industrialists in retaliation for their corporate crimes. Calling themselves 'The East', the group operates on an 'eye for an eye' strategy, targeting high level corporate executives with specific acts of violence to mirror the suffering of their victims. After forging her cover identity and blending into the nomadic underground of anarchist drifters, 'Sarah' finds herself at the The East's secret headquarters and eventually adopts an active role within the group. As her time undercover wears on though, she begins to feel split loyalties between The East and her corporate employers; questioning her conservative worldview and developing genuine sympathy for the group and their anarchic cause. But despite her political awakening and her growing loyalty to The East, Jane soon finds that all is not what it seems. We discuss the many strong points of the film, being an independently written story with well conceived plot devices and engrossing character development; where the clash of political ethos and social attitudes conveys a number of complex perspectives. We explore questions of perception and self-interest, looking at the contrast between ideas of consumerism and freeganism, and how wilful ignorance allows corruption to flourish. We also touch on the bohemian, pragmatic outlook of both the corporate establishment and the off-grid anarchists, where the ends justify the means and the notion of self-righteousness becomes an end unto itself. Is industrial crime a question of conspiracy or ignorance, and what actions are justified in stopping it? Topics discussed include: Hiller Brood, Private Intelligence, Infiltration, Undercover, Brit Marling, Alexander Skarsgard, Ellen Page, Anarchists, Conservative, Consumerism, Materialism, Capitalism, Ignorance, Conspiracy, Industry, Pollution, Environmentalism, Freeganism, Rail Riding, Dumpster Diving, Squatting, Nomads, Big Pharma, Oil, Medications, Corruption, Sympathy, Terrorism, Lifestyles, Perception, Perspective, Loyalty, Revolution, Conflict, Females, Gender, Interpretation, Indie Films, Characters, Love Triangle, Economics, Espionage, Politics, Wastefulness, Direct Action, Jams, Radicalism, Violence, Food, FBI, Ethics, Bohemian, Cold War, Far-Left, Corporations, Pragmatism, Crime, Executives, Military-Industrial Complex, Competition, Publicity, Rationalism, Trump, Comfort, Security, Nature, Consequences, Victims, Spaghetti, Pasta, Meatballs.
In this episode, the group gets to discuss the topic of alternative lifestyles. Brad runs down a list of alternative lifestyles that you maybe not have considered. We get to start off talking about the lifestyle of nudism. Would you be ok with certain activities being performed nude? Ever wonder what an Eco village or Freeganism is? Listen in and find out. We talk about home births and how we feel about it. Should it be allowed? Is it considered responsible? Do you believe in re-incarnation? We provide our opinions and reasoning.
