Legendary French singer Edith Piaf was a firecracker of emotion. Gutsy and seductive, while underneath -- an intense fragility. That's the legend. But what's it like to play a legend, show after show, year after year? Cabaret singer Nathalie Lermitte has been inhabiting the icon Piaf for well over a decade.Top Shelf with Josh Piterman. Josh Piterman is an Australian musical theatre star who's used to donning all kinds of masks, especially as the Phantom of the Opera on London's West End. He's also a certified meditation teacher and he's just written a self-help book, about dropping the mask and being authentic. He takes us through the music and thinkers who've changed his life.Plus — more masks!Gail Evans and Nicky Fearn are Darwin local theatre legends. Now they're presenting something completely different from their usual humorous, physical-theatre plays — Fair Punishment, a story based on a chilling, gothic Canadian novel that's told through masked performance. We hear a reading performed by Merlynn Tong.

DAJE DE ERASMUS | French Music Episode by Roma Tre Radio
Maurice Ravel was born 150 years ago, on March 7, 1875, and he is the subject of numerous tributes this season. Bertrand Chamayou recorded the complete piano works ten years ago for Erato ('No one who loves French music or exquisite piano-playing will want to miss this' wrote Patrick Rucker in Gramophone), a set that incidentally has just been released on LP. So, by way of a supplement, he has curated a programme that weaves a handful of Ravel transcriptions together with tributes and memorials by other composers. James Jolly went to visit Bertrand at his home in Paris this week to talk about the new album, but also to discuss Ravel's place in the pianist's repertoire. This Gramophone Podcast is given in association with Wigmore Hall
A year ago, France introduced a new streaming tax aimed at boosting its domestic music scene, and the results have been promising. The Centre National de la Musique reports that the tax has helped fund hundreds of music productions and tours, particularly in underfunded genres like classical, chanson, and jazz. With €10 million allocated to these efforts, the program is already making a tangible difference. The tax applies to major online music streaming platforms, such as Spotify, Deezer, and YouTube, and is calculated as a small percentage of their revenues. While the initiative received strong backing from industry advocates, including music producers, it faced resistance from platforms like Spotify and Deezer, who, as expected, have passed the cost onto users. As a result, Spotify now charges €11.12 per month in France, making it the most expensive in Europe, though just 13 cents more than in Luxembourg. But if this small increase helps fund the creation of soulful French chansons, those 13 cents seem worth it.
"You always have to work hard, but you also have to feed your soul." How do we balance mastery and play? External and internal validation? Focus on self and audience? In this episode, Emmeline sits down with the legendary French jazz guitarist Stephane Wrembel to tackle these questions and more. Stephane talks about his time studying with the French gypsies, his experiences at the Berklee School of Music, and his time on tour with his band. He also brings some philosophy and mythology into his discussion about what it really means to be a musical artist--even citing Apollo and Dionysus! He and Emmeline also discuss the choices we make as musicians, and how those choices can help us shape our voice.Stephane is on tour and will be in the DFW area on January 18th, 2025! Catch him at:Zounds Sounds B-Side from 2-4 PMScat Jazz Lounge in Fort Worth at 8 PM and 10 PMTo learn more about Stephane, or to follow his musical journey, visit his official website or follow him on Instagram. William Christie, the founder - and guiding spirit for the past 45 years – of Les Arts Florissants, celebrates his 80th birthday on December 19. Gramophone's James Jolly went to visit him at home in Paris to talk about his long career and its colossal impact of the rediscovery of the music of his adopted homeland. Since leaving the USA in the early 1970s and settling in France, Christie has been a major figure both in concert and on record (with a clutch of Gramophone Awards to his name), focusing on music of the 17th and 18th centuries. Their conversation ranged widely taking in memories of the harpsichordist Ralph Kirkpatrick, the countertenor Alfred Deller, the founder of Harmonia Mundi Bernard Coutaz, and many others. Musical excerpts are from from his Harmonia Mundi catalogue, including his latest release 'Bill and Friends' which finds him performing with a host of young musicians.

Why songs in French are attracting new audiences in non-francophone countries. How are French schools using screens in classrooms? And the history of France's Nobel prizes. The Paris Olympic Games and Paralympics gave French-language songs huge exposure, building on a growing interest in listening to songs in French on streaming platforms. But what kind of music are non-French-speakers listening to and why? A new exhibition at the recently opened Cité Internationale de la langue française asks the question. Its curator, the music journalist Bertrand Dicale, based the exhibit on the idea that songs reveal who were are, and he talks about what popular songs reveal about France. He also highlights some surprising differences between French and foreign audiences, whereby stars like Aya Nakamura and Juliette Gréco have enjoyed huge success abroad despite being scorned at home. (Listen @0'00)France lags behind many countries in the use of technology in classrooms and there is no clear policy from an ever-changing education ministry. But the disorganisation may be buying educators time to consider the consequences. A report commissioned in the spring by President Emmanuel Macron advised placing limits on young people's use of smartphones and social media, and some schools are testing a smartphone ban this year. The report also pointed to a lack of coordination between authorities in determining how technology should be used in schools. A group of educators founded a collective Pour une éducation numérique raisonnée (For a well-reasoned digital education), which has raised concerns about the push to digitise textbooks and get students to use screens. We visit a class taught by one of its members, and see how technolgoy is – and is not – used. (Listen @22'00)In the midst of Nobel season, a look at some of France's 71 prizes, from the first ever Nobel Peace prize in 1901, to the five won by members of the Curie family for physics and chemistry. French-language music took centre stage during the Paris Olympics, with giant karaokés, star-studded ceremonies and a medley of styles and sounds. Boosted also by TV series, online streaming and a 30 percent increase in French music exports, Francophone songs are on a roll. In this week's France in Focus, we take a deep dive into the French music scene and look at whether it can keep up the momentum, as well as what it means for the French language.

Kirill Gerstein's new album, timed for release mid-way between the anniversary of the death of Claude Debussy (March 25) and Armenian Genocide Remembrance Day (April 24), pairs music by Debussy and the Armenian, Komitas. Both composers were profoundly affected by the death and destruction surrounding them during the First World War, and both responded with music of multi-layered intensity. Gerstein links late Debussy piano music with Komitas's piano works, as well as songs by each composer. 'Music in the Time of War' is released to stream and download by Platoon, and on two CDs with a substantial book of essays next month by Myrios. James Jolly spoke to Kirill Gerstein to learn about the project and why he brought together these two powerful musical voices in the same programme. This Gramophone Podcast is produced in association with Wigmore Hall.

The recent passing of Jane Birkin was a reminder of just how attached French people are to la chanson française, which literally translates to "French songs" but is much more than that. Chanson française is a very distinct genre of music and is intertwined with French culture and history. Several styles of chanson française have emerged over the years, but the defining feature that ties them all together is that it's all about the words. In this episode of French Connections we take you on a musical tour of la chanson française.
As the dust settles on a week of intense urban violence triggered by the police shooting of a young man in the northern working-class suburb of Nanterre, we look at the causes and what, if anything, has changed in these poorer, multi-racial neighbourhoods since the 2005 riots. What role has police violence played in the worsening relations between the state and banlieues residents? And the life and music of singer-poet-anarchist Léo Ferré. The fatal shooting of Nahel Merzouk by a police officer in the town of Nanterre on 27 June sparked a wave of violence, with mainly young men attacking symbols of the French state such as schools and town halls, damaging private property and looting shops and supermarkets. The unrest recalls the 2005 riots – also triggered by police violence against French youth of colour from the banlieues. Nearly 20 years later, little has changed, laments sociologist Julien Talpin. He argues that the violence during those eight nights was more political and far less random than the government and police portrayed it to be. (Listen @0')Relations between France's police force and banlieues residents have worsened since 2005. There is mistrust on both sides – with young people seeing themselves as ready targets of racially motivated police violence and officers feeling they are disrespected and under attack. While the French government denies there is systemic racism within the police, studies have shown the contrary. Political Scientist Jacques De Maillard, who studies the police in France and elsewhere, says racial profiling and racist attitudes are part of how the police function, but neither the authorities nor officers themselves are willing to recognise this. (Listen @13'50'')Leo Ferré, one of France's most important and admired singer-poets, died on 14 July 1993. Ever the rebel, he wrote and interpreted songs that shocked and broke taboos in the 1960s – whether denouncing torture in Algeria or celebrating female genitalia. His raw passion on stage and way with words earned him a huge place in the ballad tradition known as French "chanson". Bonjour Les Amis! Last season we started series where we talked to different guests around the world about their culture. This season we are at it again as we go to one of the most romantic and historic places in the world…France. Tune in as our special guest Léna, talks to us all about the French culture and what makes France a great place to live. Léna then discusses common misconceptions the world has when it comes to the French culture.
Paris is a city famous for romantic sights and sounds; however, beneath the glamor, a dirty secret threatens to swallow the city whole. An ancient labyrinth of tunnels- most of which is unexplored and illegal to enter- winds over 200 miles. Synopsis Today is the birthday of the American composer and teacher Edward Burlingame Hill, born in Cambridge, Massachusetts, in 1872. Hill studied at Harvard, which was not surprising, since his grandfather had been President of the college, and his father taught chemistry there. “My father sang the songs of Schubert,” recalled Hill, “and was a great admirer of Bach. Thus at an early age I was imbued with a deep love for serious music.” Hill studied with the 19th century American composer John Knowles Paine, who had established at Harvard the first music department in any American university. After Hill took all of Paine's courses, he went on to study in Paris with Charles Widor. Hill's early works were in the French style, and you might say that he “wrote the book on the subject” – literally. In 1924, Hill published a study titled “French Music” and was awarded the French Legion of Honor for his efforts. During his lifetime, major American orchestras performed Hill's music, but today, if he's remembered at all, it's as a teacher at Harvard. Toward the end of tenure, one his students was Leonard Bernstein, who, in 1953, made a recording of his teacher's “Prelude for Orchestra.” Hill died in New Hampshire in 1960, at the age of 88.
