Homeschool moms juggle many different roles, and Anne Miller is no exception! But for her, one of those roles led to becoming a key advocate for homeschooling in her state. Join Anne Miller, Executive Director and President of the Home Educators Association of Virginia (HEAV), and Jim Mason, President of HSLDA, as they reflect on the importance of advocacy, 40 years of homeschool freedom, and the incredible growth of the homeschooling community. Hear Anne's inspiring journey from volunteering with HEAV to leading the organization as Executive Director and President! “There are vast numbers of homeschool families now. We're not alone anymore. I'll tell you, in the 1980s, we felt very alone. We only knew one family. And then we found this small group that we didn't even know existed! But now, everybody knows a homeschooler. There are homeschoolers probably right on your block or around the corner. They're everywhere.”—Anne Miller

Yasi and Steven talk with actress Carolyn Ann Miller about life on and off the stage. She shares about her ups and downs as a NYC actress, her performances in South Pacific and Titanic, and her creation of Safe Space for actors.Instagram: @carolynannemilleractorFacebook: https://www.facebook.com/carolyn.a.miller.54/Bio: Carolyn Anne Miller is a born and raised Chicago native. She moved from Chicago to New York City immediately after graduating college in 2015 and would dare to say that after almost 10 years she is now a proud New Yorker. However, Chicago hotdogs will always be better than NYC's attempt. Sorry!Offstage, she's constantly creating, whether it's workshopping her cabaret, interior design, writing in her free time, planning her new musical, free drawing or illustrating her mom's new children's book, or crying and laughing so hard at her favorite place on earth, **SAFE SPACE (IG: @safespacemanhattan). She is also a massive lover of the earth and spends as much time as she can outside!Carolyn has worked in and out of NYC since moving here. She performed in the 10-person ensemble supporting TITUSS BURGESS in his Carnegie Hall production of Take Me to the World: A Stephen Sondheim Tribute. She's created a home regionally with the Fulton Theatre and Maine State Music Theatre starring in many of their shows including; South Pacific, Nellie Forbush; 9TO5, Doralee Rhodes; Something Rotten, Portia; Spelling Bee, Olive Ostrovsky; Titanic, Kate McGowan, and several more.**Carolyn and her friend Jenn Smith created Safe Space, a judgement-free, supportive, and encouraging performance event during the pandemic. Their goal was to provide space to those who lost their space, had no space, or wanted to try out space just for fun. We welcome folks from all across the spectrum of artists, ranging from Broadway artists to artists who are singing in front of folks for their very first time! We occasionally offer professional video and we ALWAYS offer a supportive community, fabulous vibes, and an unforgettable night! We exist purely to raise up and encourage all artists!

Hello and welcome episode 47 of The DJ B-12 Deep Acid House Experience. I hope you are all doing well out there and I appreciate your support and listenership. This show is for the month of September 2023, and it is dedicated in memory of Ainsley Talbot, my 10-month 3-week-old kitten who passed on August 29, 2023. She had a terrible condition that left her disabled after she was about 2-3 months old. Although she was born normal with her surviving sister, Arianna and her brother, Jackson, it seems, her mother, Gracie (who was a stray cat I took in 3 weeks before they were born), contracted a virus while she was pregnant, which resulted in only Ainsley developing a condition that caused her cerebral cortex to not form properly. It started out with her motor skills diminishing and eventually led to her being only able to lay on her side and needing help doing everything. She was a true fighter, and she will always be my little hero and my best friend, but her broken little body just had enough.  She was the most beautiful, precious, and loving soul I've ever known.  As you can imagine, this was a bittersweet episode for me to do with losing her so young, which is one of the reasons it took me so long to get out, but I wanted to get a fresh mix out with new tunes that I could also dedicate to her. Although this set was worked out ahead of her passing, some of the tracks took on a special meaning because of lyrics and titles. RIP Ainsley girl. I will love you forever and always, until we meet again, my angel. Ainsley Talbot October 3, 2022 - August 29, 2023.This mix has 76 tracks and a runtime of 2 hours and 38 minutes. This set contains the best in house, breaks, progressive, melodic house and techno, techno, deep house, acid, piano house, vocal house, uplifting house and more. The full 320k mp3 can be downloaded from Soundcloud.  This episode contains tracks by the following artists and on the following labels: Sousa_, 13 Records, Thomas Compana, Drekaan, Embliss Records, Into The Ether, Immersed, Digby & Oliver, Framewerk, Zero Tolerance Recordings, Ika Sile, OSF, Sasha, Because of Art, Last Night On Earth, Dosem, My Friend, Anjunadeep, W&O Street Tracks, Trance Wax, Armada Music, Framewerk Rewerks, Kodiaks, Aubrey Fry, Death Proof Recordings, Mauricio, Big Speaker Music, Paul Rudder, Miura Records, Rhyme Time Production, Skapes, Tim Hidgem, Cleveland City, Solo, TuneCore, Sopp, Pomme Frite, Sweet LA, LW Recordings, T-Bor, Phoenix Music Inc, Nick Muir, Proton Music, Audiojack, Jem Cooke, Michael Mayer, Crosstown Rebels, Suki, Shall Not Fade, Armada Music Albums, Jachmastr, Selsi, Sounds and Frequencies Recordings, Bound to Divide, Lauren L'aimant, Colorize (Enhanced), Nadja Lind, Hernan Cattaneo, Soundexile, City Noises, Muzvio, Capital Heaven, Toriah, Stress Records, Fly Boy Records, Leena Punks, Tom Westy, Monoton, La Fusa, Henry Street Music, Tom Wax, Frank De Wulf, Phuture Wax Records, Nicky Elisabeth, Joris Voorn, Acid James, Amy Dabbs, Athlete Whippet, Aus Music, Ejeca, Toolroom, mpeg, Permanent Vacation, Jay Kay, Play This! More successful runs allowed him to work with a host of master Directors and Choreographers, who included Bob Fosse, Michael Bennett, Tommy Tune and Hal Prince. Michael appeared in nine Broadway productions including the original Follies, and Applause, and as replacement cast in Pippin. He was cast in A Chorus Line when it began at the Public Theatre, and performed in Equus, where Richard Burton and Tony Perkins played the lead at different times. Other leading players he was able to watch up close included Lauren Bacall, Marian Seldes, Alexis Smith, Yvonne de Carlo, and Anne Miller in Mame. He has appeared in over fifty plays and musicals in regional theatres across the country, 200 television commercials, including the first Dr Pepper commercial. In Los Angeles Michael appeared in numerous television series, soaps and films; among them The Great Gatsby and Alligator.Michael now enjoys retirement in Hawaii - and it was there that I eventually got to meet him ‘in person' during a recent visit. And he didn't disappoint - charming, erudite and still passionate about the life he carved in the theatre. The STAGES podcast is available to access and subscribe from Spotify and Apple podcasts. Top 5 Copy Skills To Work On In 2023

Now that it's late January, you should be well into your New Years Resolutions or goals for the year, or maybe decided, “Ah… I'll wait till next year.” What I'd like to do is niche down to just copywriting. Do you have copywriting goals? I've got five skills or skill sets that are worth improving this year, and I want to give you a peek under the hood. Every one of these can put more power in your copy and more profit in your pocket. They're not flashy but they are high-octane. And I've found the most successful people never stop improving, so it's worth at least considering these and see if they feel like a fit. So there are the five skills. You probably have most or all of them already. The idea is that by getting better at any one of them, you copy improves in multiples. Skill #1: Research We talked about three kinds of research: fact research, emotional research, and situational research. Most people know what fact research is, and even getting better at this could really help anyone's copywriting. But emotional research and situational research take copy to a whole new level. Skill #2: Rewriting Building off this quote from Ernest Hemingway: Don't get discouraged because there's a lot of mechanical work to writing. There is, and you can't get out of it. I rewrote the first part of A Farewell to Arms at least fifty times. You've got to work it over. The first draft of anything is shit. When you first start to write you get all the kick and the reader gets none, but after you learn to work it's your object to convey everything to the reader so that he remembers it not as a story he had read but something that happened to himself. We talked about what real rewriting is like… why it's so important… and the best way to do it. Skill #3: Metaphors We were so fortunate to have the Queen of Metaphors, Anne Miller, on the show a few weeks ago. We talked about her book, The Tall Lady With The Iceberg. Tucked away in the back of the book are a series of very practical, valuable routines on how you can get better and better at using metaphors in your copy—and everywhere else! We cover those in this part of the podcast. Skill #4: Go Beyond Swiping There's a level of copywriting that Gene Schartz talks about in “Breakthrough Advertising” that goes way beyond swiping, or simply following formulas to come up with a headline or body copy. Gene says, “The idea for an ad or a headline demands its own shape. It cannot be fitted into someone else's solution. The problem defies a formula. And the third, analytical approach -- with no answers, only guideposts and questions -- offers the only way.” We talked about these three levels of copy creativity here. Skill #5: Get Better At Identifying and Writing To Your Prospect's Level of Market Awareness This another one of the many gems from Gene Schwartz' book Breakthrough Advertising. Here are the five stages in a nutshell: Stage 1- Ready to buy your product Stage 2- Has heard about your product, but doesn't want it (yet) Stage 3- Wants a product that does what yours does -- but doesn't want yours (yet) Stage 4 - Has a need, but doesn't see connection between his need and your product Stage 5 - Complete unawareness We talked about getting more familiar with these five stages, and how to use them. One more thing: If more than one of these appeals to you and you've already decided to improve the skill or skills, don't dive into all of them all at once. Better to do one at a time. Maybe one a week, or one every two weeks, or one a month. But, if you can, do something every day to improve one of these skills, and stick with one for at least a week, you will find you have some impressive breakthroughs in 2023. If you've ever wondered what a metaphor is and how to use metaphors in your copy, today you will get your questions answered. Because we have a guest who I consider to be the reigning expert on the question, Anne Miller. She's author of “The Tall Lady With The Iceberg.” For my money, it is the best book ever written on how to use metaphors to sell, to explain, and to win people over. Anne understands and teaches this information better than anyone else I've ever seen. She's also a coach, speaker and seminar leader. Her huge client list ranges from Columbia University and The Wall Street Journal to Revlon, Citibank and Yahoo. As well as clients in Australia, South America, Europe and Asia. Dozens and dozens of household names and major niche organizations. For us in the copywriting world, Anne's expertise in creating and using metaphors is what excites me the most. Many copywriters and business owners use metaphors, but not too many people do it all that well. And that's about to change today. Anne covers a lot of ground on today's show. Here's what I ask her: 1. What is a metaphor, anyway? 2. Why are metaphors so important? 3. You have a very handy four-step metaphor workout. Could you share it with us? 4. What are the main ways we can use metaphors in communication? 5. Could we talk about a few different kinds of metaphors, with examples 6. How about which mistakes you should avoid when using metaphors? You can get in touch with Anne on her website: https://www.annemiller.com Here's the link to her book, The Tall Lady With The Iceberg: https://www.amazon.com/Tall-Lady-Iceberg-Metaphor-Metaphorically/dp/0976279444 Download.

Lady Glenconner, Anne Tennant, the eldest child of the fifth Earl of Leicester, was lady-in-waiting to Princess Margaret for three decades. She says her mother brought her up to cope with a fundamental truth of her class and time: women must put up and shut up, and so had been taught to smile through life in high society despite the brutality of a husband who left her deaf in one ear. After the success of her first memoir three years ago a second has just been published. Joining Emma live in the studio she explains why she was compelled to write Whatever Next? Lessons From An Unexpected Life. President Zelensky has accused Russia of "crimes against humanity" after a new missile barrage caused blackouts across Ukraine. Yesterday we heard of a two day old baby dying when a maternity unit was bombed in the southern Zaporizhia region. How are these developments affecting women and girls? Emma hears from Jess Parker, BBC Correspondent in Ukraine at the moment. This Saturday, the Ukrainian Institute in London, alongside other organisations, have organised an event to discuss sexual violence in the war in Ukraine. Emma talks to one of the speakers, Anna Kvit, a research fellow at University College London looking into women in war and their response to war. With the release of Matilda the Musical in cinemas this week, Emma Barnett speaks to author and podcaster Daisy Buchanan and QI Elf and writer Anne Miller about being so-called 'girly swots' at school and how it has shaped them in adulthood. You may have heard that the clitoris has 8,000 nerve endings, but that number comes from a 1970s study on cows. New research shows the clitoris actually has over 10,000 nerve endings. Does this increase in number matter? Emma asks science journalist Rachel E Gross and Dr Brooke Vandermolen, an NHS Obstetrics and Gynaecology Registrar.

As a DJ, I play tracks and music from others. It's what we DJ's do. We play tracks we haven't created ourselves for people to dance to and appreciate. In essence, we are the ambassadors for the artists and producers of said tracks. We're the vectors that get their music viral, that get their music heard and distributed. Without us, without the parties, this wouldn't happen. I mixed a special set this month, a Valentine's Day set from the confines of my pandemic-free haven, my bedside. I also went on YouTube and found some classic dance movies to sync the beats up with for my chasing synchronicity impetus that has driven me for so long. I wish I had the bandwidth to choreograph, but one lifetime is just too darned short to do everything we love with the dedication they deserve. So, I repurposed the look and feel of Fred Astair, Eleanor Powell, Ginger Rogers, Anne Miller, Mitzi Gainer, The Nicholas Brothers and other greats of their time, destined to be forgotten by the next generations, and mixed them in with modern-day electronica, with house music, deep house music, and dance. I'm not going to make any money for doing so, since YouTube frowns on that sort of thing, and perhaps Spotify might ding me for spinning other artists' tracks I didn't produce myself. However, for the sake of the Art, I must at least try. To see the video, visit YouTube. To listen to the mix without commentary, music only, visit SoundCloud. As a boy, I would watch PBS and their ballets. I would turn the music down and replace their music (though enjoyable in its own right) with a cassette tape containing my favorite dance music that I recorded from the radio. Basically, it's all I'm doing now, just with better equipment. Here's to the spirit of the dance, the deep appreciation of existential synchronicity, and the heart of every DJ in the world. Each month SC Women in Leadership brings you a new episode that speaks to informing, inspiring, and involving talented women with diverse and inclusive perspectives to step into leadership roles at every level.  This month Anne Miller interviews author Jenna Arnold about her book Raising Our Hands: How White Women Can Stop Avoiding Hard Conversations, Start Accepting Responsibility, and Find Our Place on the New Front Lines. White women are one of the most influential demographics in America—the largest voting bloc, with purchasing power that exceeds any other demographic, and when we unify to demand change, we are a force to be reckoned with. Jenna Arnold criss-crossed the US to have conversations with white women about their identity and role in the country and found common characteristics— ones that get in the way of us becoming more engaged as citizens. We're so focused on checking off our to-do lists, or so afraid of getting it wrong, or so busy trying to sidestep conflict, that we are actively avoiding the urgent conversations we need to have. Raising Our Hands is a reckoning call for white women. Jenna Arnold asks us to step up and join the new frontlines in the fight against complacency —in our homes, in our communities and in our own minds. She questions why so many white women sit idly on the sidelines, opting out of raising our hands to do, learn, and engage in ways that could make a difference. In the interview she acknowledges that we can be furious about indignity and injustice and also admit to being complicit at the same time. Because of privilege and bias, white women have knowingly and unknowingly played by a certain set of rules and it’s time for us to be honest with ourselves about the contradictions in our society. We can no longer make excuses for why we don't have time or don't know enough. About SC Women in Leadership Moving South Carolina forward through informing, inspiring, and involving women in leadership has been the mission of South Carolina Women in Leadership (SC WIL) since our founding.  Today, as a massive movement for social justice sweeps the country, our mission is more important than ever. SC WIL believes that as more talented women with diverse and inclusive perspectives step up to lead and to govern, gender and racial equality, as well as community equity, can, at last, become a reality. Real estate has always been a relationship-based industry, so agents need to find ways to keep communicating with their spheres in the age of social distancing.  Is it even possible to build relationships with prospects and clients during social distancing? How can you build genuine bonds with people during this time? The world may have come to a standstill recently, but you’re lucky to live in an age where technology allows us to stay in touch virtually. On this episode that was recorded as part of my recently launched Luxury Lunch & Learn, Vice President of Luxury and Commercial at RE/MAX Holdings, Anne Miller shares how to survive and adapt to the new normal in the luxury real estate space.   As agents and entrepreneurs, your past clients have to hear from you now. Reach out to them. Don’t talk business, check in with them authentically and sincerely. -Michael LaFido   Three Things You’ll Learn In This Episode   Adopt an abundance mindsetNow more than ever before, it’s important for agents to help each other. Instead of having a scarcity mindset and not wanting to share business, now is the time to build relationships with agents in other teams and across the country. We are stronger when we work together. Check in with clientsIt’s always important to stay in contact with past clients, but even more so while so many people are worried about the future. Reach out to clients to see how they are; once COVID-19 has passed, you will be remembered for that. However, be sure to do this genuinely; any insincerity will have the opposite effect. Be visible on videoA lot of agents are nervous to appear on video, which makes the Zoom option of turning off the camera an attractive idea. However, to build relationships, we have to be visible. Clients are more trusting when they know who they’re speaking to, especially in the luxury space.   Guest Bio Anne Miller is the Vice President of Luxury and Commercial at RE/MAX. She is recognized as a luxury real estate expert with over 20 years of experience.
