This week, we revisit one of the most important Supreme Court cases you've probably never heard of: Baker v. Carr, a redistricting case from the 1960s, which challenged the justices to consider what might happen if they stepped into the world of electoral politics. It's a case so stressful that it pushed one justice to a nervous breakdown, put another justice in the hospital, brought a boiling feud to a head, and changed the course of the Supreme Court — and the nation — forever. Voices in the episode include: • Tara Grove — More Perfect legal advisor, University of Texas at Austin law professor • Guy-Uriel Charles — Harvard law professor • Louis Michael Seidman — Georgetown law school professor • Sam Issacharoff — NYU law school professor • Craig A. As your go-to place for all things Pride and Prejudice, we felt it was our duty to watch the film and report back on how it compares to the original. And we were lucky enough to get Tobin Low, the co-creator of the Nancy podcast and current editor at This American Life, in the studio to break it all down. Social activist Suad Abdul Khabeer said on Twitter, “You don't have to be the voice for the voiceless, just pass the mic.” So today, I want to pass the mic to some queer, BIPOC voices that have made an incredible impact on my understanding of this concept. I wanted to start with Intersectionality matters - is a podcast hosted by Kimberlé Crenshaw, an American civil rights advocate and a leading scholar of critical race theory. Next I wanted to highlight, Sessions with my therapists - podcast about two dope Black women who found healing and happiness through therapy. Angela is queer and they're both so open and comfortable it's like listening in on a friend's conversation. The podcast Nancy is also really dope - Queer, Asian Americans Kathy Tu and Tobin Low share really great, personal stories and have some really cool guests on there. The Queer Arabs podcast is a growing collection of dialogues surrounding the intersection of Middle Eastern/Southwest Asian + North African and LGBTQ identities. Recording in English and Arabic, with hosts based in the US and guests based all over, the podcast highlights queer artists, activists, and others who speak on behalf of racial justice, gender liberation, and sex positivity. Food 4 Thot A roundtable discussion podcast wherein a multiracial mix of queer writers talk sex, relationships, race, identity, what they like to read, and who they like to read. The red nation podcast The Red Nation Podcast features discussions on Indigenous history, politics, and culture from a left perspective. QueerWOC is a space for queer women and folks of color rooted in reimagining healing, organizing, and community. These podcasts are just a few examples of incredible content presented by Black, Indigenous, People of Color. In the 1996 election, Bill Clinton had a problem. The women who came out in droves for him in ‘92, split their vote in the ‘94 midterms, handing over control of the House and the Senate to the Republican Party. As his team stared ahead at his re-election bid, they knew they had to win those women back. So, after a major polling effort to determine who exactly their undecided ladies were, Clinton turned his focus toward the most important swing vote in the election: the soccer moms.  The soccer mom ushered in a new era of political campaigning, an era of slicing and dicing the electorate, engineering the (predominately white) voting bloc characters that campaigns have chased after. Security Moms. Nascar Dads. Joe Six Pack. Walmart Moms.  But what about everyone else? What about the surprisingly swingable corners of this country without a soccer mom in sight?  Inspired by this exceedingly cool interactive map from Politico, we set out on a mission to make an audio-map of our own. We asked pollsters, reporters and political operatives in swing states: what slice of your population is up for grabs? A slice that no one talks about? In this episode, we crawl inside the places that might hold our country’s future in its hands, all the while asking: are these slices even real? Are there people inside them that might swing this election?  This episode was reported and produced by Becca Bressler, Tobin Low, Sarah Qari, Tracie Hunte, Pat Walters and Matt Kielty, with help from Jonny Moens. Coming out means taking a risk and sharing something deeply personal with another person. In this hour-long episode of Nancy, the critically acclaimed podcast about the queer experience, hosts Tobin Low and Kathy Tu bring you three stories about different kinds of coming out. You'll hear from two gay men of different generations about what it's like to disclose an HIV diagnosis; a young woman who tracks down the queer role model she didn't know she needed; and a young man trying to save his father's life, even if it means a painful confrontation.  If you like what you heard, subscribe to NANCY for free.

A few weeks ago, I welcomed Kathy Tu to the Sewers of Paris -- she's the co-creator of the podcast Nancy from WNYC. And this week, we're chatting with Nancy's other parent, Tobin Low. He's a recovering cellist-turned-podcaster who realized he hated his career and needed to make a change for his own good. As a young queer person, Tobin got swept up in the fairytale love stories of rom-coms and wedding announcements, but life got messy when it turned out relationships aren't all storybook romances. And BTW, I hope you'll join us for a brand new weekly queer Dungeons & Dragons stream, every Saturday at 11am Pacific. Join me and Connor Olmstead, Brian Moreno, Justin Saint, Jen Vaugn, and my partner James as DM. We just started and now's a perfect time to join us at twitch.tv/prettyprettypixel.And of course, I'm also doing twice-monthly hangouts on YouTube, where I chat with you about the books and movies and music and shows that you're obsessed with right now. The next one is on Saturday April 6.As always, huge thanks to everyone who makes The Sewers of Paris possible with a pledge of support on Patreon!
