Election workers are the people in your neighborhood. They're our friends, neighbors and co-workers who help keep American democracy safe and secure.. But in 2020, many of them were maligned, harassed and threatened in battleground states — the targets of bad actors who sought to sow distrust in the electoral process. How can we better protect and support the many dedicated civil servants and volunteers who provide such crucial work? The thousands of election workers who will staff this November's election are the front line of security and safety for voters. The processes they help carry out have been practiced and refined across nearly three centuries of American elections. Attacks on election workers are a threat to a functional democracy. In this episode, we talk with Kristina and Steve Reisinger — a wife and husband in eastern Pennsylvania who found a community in their local polling place and were inspired to volunteer. And we also speak with Kelsey Rogers, CLC's senior manager for state advocacy, about the threats being faced by election workers in recent years and the steps some states are taking to protect them. Host and Guests:Simone Leeper litigates a wide range of redistricting-related cases at CLC, challenging gerrymanders and advocating for election systems that guarantee all voters an equal opportunity to influence our democracy. Prior to arriving at CLC, Simone was a law clerk in the office of Senator Ed Markey and at the Library of Congress, Office of General Counsel. She received her J.D. cum laude from Georgetown University Law Center in 2019 and a bachelor's degree in political science from Columbia University in 2016.Stephen Reisinger served 4 years in the USMC in Infantry and MP from 1992 to 1996. He attended Carpentry School for 4 years, graduating in 2005. He is the 3rd generation owner of the general construction company that focuses on Public Works and historic restoration. He worked as a field carpenter and superintendent until 2014. In 2017, he moved into project management and purchased the business in October of that year. Kristina Reisinger has been an educator for over 30 years, almost all of them at an independent school, Benchmark School in Media. She taught 7th grade Language Arts and Science for most of that time. In 2020, she stepped into administration but quickly soured on all the “office/meeting” work and argued her case to transform her position into that of Instructional Coach so that she could be an “in the trenches” mentor/facilitator working with the students and staff. The kids call her position a “teacher of teachers.” During the summer camp, she is the director of all academic classes.Kelsey Rogers is Senior Manager for State Advocacy at Campaign Legal Center. Before joining CLC, Kelsey spent seven years at the Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence, where she helped states across the country pass meaningful gun violence prevention legislation. In her previous roles, Kelsey also worked for the communications and legal departments of Brady. She got her start in politics by volunteering and running student chapters of the Obama for America campaign in 2008 and 2012.Links:Who Are Election Officials, and What Do They Do? – Campaign Legal CenterStates Should Protect Everyday Americans Who Safeguard Our Democracy – Campaign Legal CenterElection Workers Deserve to Feel Safe. The firearm industry is, without question, a commercial determinant of health. It manufactures and markets harmful products, and companies actively compete with each other on features like round count, ease of reloading, and lethality. More civilian-owned firearms, of more types, with more accessories like scopes or red dot sights, more bullets and magazines, in more locations, is good for business, but as clearly born out by the evidence, is bad for health. In recent years gun sales in the US have increased dramatically, and the prospect of further gun control looks dimmer, as a result of the US supreme courts ruling on the right to concealed carry. You might think of this as a uniquely American issue, but firearms are a global problem, and firearm harm certainly isn't restricted to the US alone, but the US does loom large, both in terms of the harm to American citizens, but also as a source for guns that then end up in other countries, trafficked illegally, for example to Mexico, Jamaica, the Dominican Republic, and Canada. However, even in public debates in the US, the main figures that dominate the debate are political ones, including the NRA. The industry itself has received somewhat less attention as a barrier to progress, or a facilitator of firearm-related harm, unlike for example the the tobacco industry. To talk through the role of the gun industry, the nature of firearm-related harm, and some of the challenges to reducing it, we are joined by Jonathan Lowy. He is the Founder and President of Global Action on Gun Violence, and before that was the chief council and vice president legal for the Brady Campaign. Jon has been an advocate and litigator on these issues for some 25 years. If you want to find out more about Global Action on Gun Violence, their website is here. You can read more about the lawsuit between the Mexican government and US gun manufacturers here. If you want to find out more about the firearm industry as a commercial determinant of health, we wrote a commentary in the American Journal of Public Health here. Led by Dr Zain Hussein, some empiric research on how the firearm industry frames firearm harms and their solutions can be found here. California has some of the strictest gun control laws in the nation: it bans assault-type weapons and high-capacity magazines, mandates background checks and waiting periods for firearm purchases and empowers citizens to ask a court to temporarily remove a gun from someone likely to harm themselves or others. Its firearm violence death rate is also significantly lower than the rest of the country's. Still, laws alone were not enough to prevent the deadly mass shootings in Monterey Park and Half Moon Bay. We'll learn why and hear about the obstacles California agencies face as they try to enforce the state's gun laws and contend with lax rules in neighboring states. Recently, a group of elitist pro-infringement/anti-rights "medical professionals" called "This Is Our Lane" were spawned by the Brady Campaign, and they now present themselves as political agitators who wail about banning "assault weapons" being the only answer to "gun violence". Royce had to set them straight, of course, because, like all other leftist agitators and mentally-impaired elitists, they fallaciously blame lawful gun owners and pro-2nd Amendment groups for the actions of murderers. Also, the CEO of Disney now fancies himself to be a savior and is also calling for more "gun control" (illegal infringements). It's a fun one!Don't forget to catch Voice of the Blue podcast, hosted by Royce, and produced by the American Police Hall of Fame.Voice of the Blue (buzzsprout.com)

What Can we Do to Help it in its Efforts. The host for this show is Jay Fidell. The guest is Erin Davis. Attorney Erin Davis tells us about the Brady Campaign against Gun Violence, and what it does. We discuss the recent gun control bill passed in Congress and what else needs to be done; the historical and psychological background of our national fascination with guns; the rule that if you have them you're ultimately more likely to use them; the GOP OK Corral myth that a fully-armed citizenry is somehow safer; how do we compare on these things with Europe, Asia and Latin America; the concern that we already have 400 million guns and it will not be easy to reduce that number; the solutions to the problems of guns in America; and what we can learn from New Zealand and Australia buy back programs. For Congress to enact meaningful gun legislation in response to the mass shootings that are plaguing America, "some level of profile in courage" will be needed by lawmakers who traditionally have been beholden to the gun lobby."Sometimes principle is more important than your political career, but I'm not sure how many people think of it like that who are current members of Congress, unfortunately," said Mike Lawlor, author of Connecticut's 23-year-old red flag law that he estimates has saved thousands of lives since its enactment. "It's just the reality."Lawlor made his comments on The Lean to the Left Podcast co-hosted with legal thriller author Mark M. Bello. He is associate professor of Criminal Justice at the University of New Haven, is a nationally recognized expert on criminal justice reform. "The problem in the Republican Party," Lawlor said, is "fear of retaliation from what they call the base," which is "just getting in the way, and sooner or later they will have to deal with that bigger problem, and guns are just the symptom of it."Lawlor's comments comes as a new poll by CBS News and YouGov showed that 44 percent of Republicans believe mass shootings are inevitable in a "free society", while 85 percent of Democrats and 73 percent of Independents said mass shootings are preventable "if we really tried."All of this, of course, follows a string of mass shootings that have prompted Congress to consider various gun control related proposals, including incentives to states to enact red flag laws similar to Connecticut's. However, the CBS/YouGov poll indicates that respondents from both parties believe it is unlikely that Congress will "pass any laws in the next few months that will make significant changes to gun policy."A total of 66 percent of Democrats, 72 percent of Independents, and 71 percent of Republicans indicated they feel that way and they have good reason. Unfortunately, money talks in Washington, apparently much louder than the anguished cries of children who are being terrorized by a gunman in school or the loved ones of victims shot in a racist attack in a supermarket.According to the Brady Campaign, the National Rifle Association spent $3.22 million to benefit the political campaigns of senators who oppose gun safety legislation. In 2020, they spent $2.20 million. These senators refuse to support common-sense gun reform, like expanding Brady Background Checks and banning assault weapons. You can find the list of leading recipients of NRA money here. Meanwhile, Lawlor points out that the U.S. Supreme Court is expected to issue a ruling soon in a New York gun rights case that could expand the scope of protections the Second Amendment affords individual gun owners who want to carry a gun outside of their residents.According to the Brennan Center, The biggest question in New York State Rifle & Pistol Association v. Bruen may not be whether a majority of justices strike down the state's century-old handgun licensing requirement but how far that majority goes in signaling that other licensing measures created by government officials are now constitutionally suspect."The proliferation of guns in this country could become more extreme depending on what happens, and all we know for sure is that will lead to more and more firearm deaths, suicides, accidents, homicides, and you know at some point, the pain will be unsustainable."On the podcast, Lawlor details the Connecticut red flag law, how it works, how it has prevented shootings and death, as well as other steps that state has taken to restrict the proliferation of firearms.Take a listen.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/the-lean-to-the-left-podcast--4719048/support.

The High Cost of Legalism: Many Christians insist on putting themselves under the Law. Bob shows us the devastating consequences that often follow when they don't choose to live in God's grace. Today's Resource: Gospel of Mark Bible Study DVD set or HD Video Download. We Christians might assume that the Lord's favorite title for Himself, being God the Son, would be, the Son of God. Indeed, the Gospel of Mark begins by identifying Jesus in that way. However, five times more frequently, Mark uses Jesus own favorite title for Himself, the Son of Man. Throughout all of eternity past, He had always been the Son of God. However, to become the Son of Man, He would need to lower Himself. Indeed, the Lord lowered Himself in so many ways, as He would need to do even to have the evangelist Mark write this amazing account of His life, death and resurrection. * Lying and Legalism: This seems like as good a place as any to list the places in the Bible where, with God's approval, the righteous lied to the wicked. In the process, they received God's blessing. This is a legalism issue. Legalists tend to struggle with the Lord's teaching that man was not made for the Sabbath, but the Sabbath for man. Thus, even though God prohibited Israel from doing work on the Sabbath, because of the nature of the Sabbath law, of course there would be exceptions. For example, even though the prohibition extended even to the gathering of sticks, if an Israelite came upon a child freezing in the wilderness, if lighting a fire to save the boy required the man to pick up sticks, of course he should do so even if it were the Sabbath. The actual sin against God would be in letting the child die to avoid working on Saturday. Using actual historical examples, legalistic Christians get confused about the morality of lying to a German Gestapo agent who asked whether or not you were hiding Jews. Lying to the wicked to save the innocent does not violate God's prohibition against bearing false witness against your neighbor. As a general rule, of course, it is a sin to tell countless kinds of lies. But there are plenty of examples in the Bible of God's servants, and even of God Himself, deceiving the wicked by lying to them. For example, when the Syrian army came to arrest Elisha, by the power of God the prophet blinded them and told them that they had arrived at the wrong house, and that he would lead them to the man they were searching for, yet instead, he led them into a trap, at which time at the request of Elisha God restored their sight, and then they saw that they had been deceived. The Hebrew midwives not only disobeyed the government's command that they kill the male infants, but they also lied to the king, and God blessed them by giving them children of their own. Rahab lied to the government to protect the Jews who were hiding nearby, and God then included her in the geneaology of Jesus Christ. God deceives the wicked in the Scriptures, and instructs His people on how to decieve them, for example, by laying a trap in the ambush of Ai. In World War II the allies created a fake cardboard army to deceive the Germans regarding the location of the invasion at Normandy. Praise God! * Biblical Civil Disobedience: Half of those listed in Hebrews Hall of Faith were arrested for disobeying the government, and the New Testament tells us that, "We must obey God rather than men." For a discussion of the scriptural material on this, and how it justifies those who lied to and even disobeyed the governing authorities, like Rahab, Corrie Ten Boom, the Hebrew midwives, etc., listen to Bob's God's Criminal Justice System seminar! * Brady Campaign Marching in the Memorial Day Parade: Come on out and march in the Memorial Day Parade with Bob & the Brady Campaign! If you are in Colorado, then Bob invites you to march with us on Monday, and it's only about a mile. So come on out! See more at ColoradoRTL.org... UPDATE: Brady's mom Heather and grandmother Terri carried the a huge banner to lead the way! We had about 50 people marching in campaign t-shirts, and we handed out thousands of Brady post cards to introduce the Brady Amendment 67 to the crowds lining the parade route! Post-show note: If you stay alert, you'll notice that Christians who have bad theology will tend to put Old Testament Israel under grace, and New Testament believers under law. Ironic!
The agreement from gun manufacturer Remington to settle a civil court case brought by Sandy Hook families marks the first time a gun company in America has been held liable for a mass shooting. The case revolved around the marketing campaign for the rifle used by the Newtown shooter and whether it targeted teenage boys and young adults through ad placement in violent video games. The fact that the U.S. Supreme Court declined to hear the case could open the door to many more state-based lawsuits, while the settlement award could put financial pressure on other manufacturers across the industry. So is the $73 million settlement a turning point for gun reform efforts? We wanted to ask one of the top veterans of the gun reform advocacy community, Cliff Schecter, who has worked for Mike Bloomberg's Mayors Against Illegal Guns, Everytown for Gun Safety, and the Brady Campaign, and has written widely about gun safety. Welcome to episode 122 of the Mikhaila Peterson Podcast. This is another opposing views episode where I speak with two people who have opposing views on contentious subjects. This is my favourite format of episode and one I'll be focusing on. In this episode, I spoke with Dan Gross and Dr. John R. Lott about gun control in America. We discussed their stances on gun control, assault weapons, the gun show loophole, and background check laws. I asked them whether states with stricter gun control have less gun violence. We also touched on straw purchasers, misconceptions regarding gun violence, and how politics has pervaded an already complicated debate—which is one of the reasons we need conversations like this one. In the first half, I sat down with Dan Gross. After his brother was wounded in the 1997 Empire State shooting, Gross left a bright career in marketing to become a gun control activist. He has since worked to raise awareness on gun safety, spearheading campaigns that teach gun owners to mitigate risk. Gross is the former president of the Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence and co-founded the Center for Gun Rights and Responsibility. In the second half, I spoke with gun rights advocate, economist, and political commentator John R. Lott. He has worked for Yale, the University of Chicago, and the U.S. Department of Justice under Trump. He is the founder and former president of the Crime Prevention Research Center (CPRC). John Lott has published op-eds in The Wall Street Journal, The New York Times, the Los Angeles Times, and more. Remember please keep the comments civil - organizing these episodes is tricky and I really love doing them I think they're so interesting so let's keep things civil so that more people will agree to come on.
