Stephen Furlich shares his book Sex Talk: How Biological Sex Influences Gender Communication Differences Throughout Life's Stages. This is Episode 498 of Teaching Learning Leading K12, an audio podcast.   Dr. Stephen Furlich is the author of a breakthrough book, Sex Talk: How Biological Sex Influences Gender Communication Differences Throughout Life's Stages.  He has taught and researched communication at the university level for over 20 years. He has taught a variety of communication courses with the main focus of better understanding oneself and others. Often, his research projects and the courses that he taught, complemented each other and led into innovative directions.  Dr. Furlich has been an associate professor at Texas A & M University since 2018 and served as an assistant professor there for five years prior to that.  He has presented at many conferences, including: DFW Metroplex Linguistics Conference, Society for Information Technology and Teacher Education Conference, E-Learning Conference, National Communication Association Conference, Southern States Communication Association Conference, International Academy of Business and Public Administration Disciplines, and International Conference of the American Pragmatics Association.  Dr. Furlich, who was recently interviewed by One America News Network, has been published in numerous journals, including: Texas Speech Communication Journal, Kentucky Journal of Communication, The Florida Communication Journal, Journal of Applied communication Research, Academic Exchange Quarterly, Journal of Integrated Social Sciences, and Journal of the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning.  His communication paradigm is from a receiver's perspective. This places the emphasis on the listener to better understand from the speaker's perspectives and as a speaker emphasizing understanding from the listener's perspectives. Both of these become more challenging as differences increase between the speaker and listener.  Dr. Furlich has become fascinated with technological advancements in science that have enabled a better understanding of communication. Without these scientific advances, understanding communication is quite limited. This line of research has inspired him to write this book to bring together many different scientific studies to better understand the role of biology with gender communication differences.   He earned a Doctor of Philosophy in Higher Education, a Master of Arts in Communication Studies, and a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology from Texas Tech University. He resides in Commerce, Texas. So much to learn today… Thanks for listening. But wait... Could you do me a favor? Every year new communicators join the workforce—which is desperately needed. But what are the college communication curricula that are preparing them for the world we have today and the world we'll have tomorrow? This episode looks at what today's students are learning and how are they preparing for careers in communications.   Episode Guest(s): Dr. Cody Clemens' primary research and teaching foci are in Health, Organizational, Relational, and Gender Communication. His scholarly work has appeared in the Journal of Communication Pedagogy, Health Communication, Ohio Communication Journal, The Forensic of Pi Kappa Delta, and Carolinas Communication Annual. He also published a book chapter in The Handbook of Communication Training (Routledge) with his co-authors on Belbin Team Roles. His doctoral dissertation research focused on the experiences and identities of individuals living with the chronic autoimmune disease, Hashimoto's Thyroiditis. Dr. Clemens actively presents and participates at the International Congress of Qualitative Inquiry Conference, the International Association of Autoethnography and Narrative Inquiry Conference, the National Communication Association Conference, and the Ohio Communication Association Conference.   For his research and service, he has been awarded numerous awards from institutions like Bowling Green State University and the National Communication Association's Training & Development Division. He is currently the Vice President for the Ohio Communication Association, and he serves as a reviewer for the Ohio Communication Journal, Journal of Autoethnography, Journalism & Mass Communication Quarterly, and Women & Language.   He has Ph.D. in Health & Organizational Communication from Bowling Green State University, an MA in Corporate Communication, Duquesne University; and a BA-Organizational Communication & Public Relations, from Marietta College where he serves as an Assistant Professor. And, he and I are both members of the MCAA Board of Directors.   In his free time, he enjoys spending time with his many horses, and his dog, Betty.     Key Takeaways:   Careers in communication can play a key role in promoting important public health initiatives.   We should approach different generation cohorts because they have different expectations for media consumption, different levels of digital literacy, and digital access.   Communication curricula should include helping students in ways such as standing up for themselves and what they believe in, knowing the difference between credible and identifying non-critical research, and ethical and unethical behavior.   They also need to help create powerful leaders, writers, readers, and impactful communicators.   Future college communication curricula should focus on the developing strategic digital world. However, they should not lose sight of core elements like interpersonal communication, ethics, and being good colleagues and team members.   Managing new communication graduates requires listening, mentorship programs, challenges, and socialization opportunities.       Useful Links:   Dr. Cody Clemens cmc004@marietta.edu   https://www.linkedin.com/in/codymclemens/   Marietta College https://marietta.org   Connect Four Panel Discussion on the Marietta College Communication Department https://youtu.be/tQVSBP71beQ

Welcome to the 7th episode of Destination Leadership, a very special episode as this time it’s not a leader who was recommended to me to share their leadership experience, but a communications expert who works with a lot of leaders and will share her recommendations especially for first-time leaders on the topic of communication. My guest today is Katja Schleicher, whom I met at a conference many years ago. Katja has been working in TV productions, advertising, PR, corporate communications and has been running her own company for 15 years, working on a pan-european level. We will talk about her recommendations answering questions such as what to have in mind before starting a leadership position? How to introduce yourself to your team through storytelling? How to prepare for a townhall meeting? And very interestingly – when to use feminine and masculine communication patterns? As the recording was made at the location of the DLD conference, you will hear some background noises, but I hope they will not be too big of a distraction to Katja’s very practical and concrete recommendations. Enjoy this episode!

When I tell you I’m "going to get back to you by the end of the day," what does that mean to you? And what about how you interpret “get back to you?” You might be surprised to hear that what those phrases mean to you depends on your age. And how you respond to a compliment depends on your gender, in addition to context. Our question this episode: how can we best communicate across generational and gender differences? This episode’s topic brings me back to a listener question from episode 6 about how to communicate with someone who is in a different generation. I’ll include a link to that on the webpage for this episode, because it’s a great companion piece for the conversation today with Lee Caraher. This topic feels personally relevant, as my husband and I are from two different generations; he’s a Boomer, and I’m a Gen Xer. We’re 10 years apart in age, and usually the difference is most apparent when it comes to cultural references, especially music. It’s made me realize how much music comes to define a generation. It’s a mood and memory catalyst, which further cements it in our psyches and almost becomes part of our identity. And this chat with Lee brought to the surface even more places where generational differences come into play, particularly as the age gap between you and another person gets wider. She offers valuable tips on how to clear up any confusion, as well as how communication has changed in the #MeToo era. Hosted by Beth L. Buelow, PCC. From the cave to the condo, gender communication has been a tenuous art and certainly not a defined science. We know that men and women communicate so differently they may as well be from different planets, says Dr. John Gray. We also know we live in a very disruptive world today where communication channels are changing, where stress impacts the way we act and where we all seem to have too little time. On top of that, initiatives such as gender diversity in the workplace, the changing roles of women and men at home and changing technology are also having an impact on how we communicate with each other. This episode looks at gender communications and the difference between men and women. We explore how these differences are shifting, what we have to do to understand each other better and how we can all communicate better, regardless if it is in the workplace or at home. Ultimately, we ask the question: Who makes a better manager: a man or a women?

Join me and guest, Lenora Billings-Harris as we discover a fun way to help improve our communication skills with the opposite gender. We will explore ways to say what we mean in a way the other gender will understand. This insightful session will help both men and women learn how to express themselves in a way that improves results.
