(2) Timothy Ryback introduces the key power brokers of the 1932–1933 drama. On Hitler's side is Gregor Strasser, the gregarious "socialist" organizer who built the party's national infrastructure while Hitler provided the nationalist fanaticism. Opposing them is Kurt von Schleicher, a master political strategist and "puppet master" who views politics as "war by other means." He uses Franz von Papen, a handsome but less capable aristocrat, as his political tool. Additionally, Ernst Röhm leads the SA, a private army of 400,000 brown-shirted ruffians who militarized Germanstreets alongside rival political factions.1945 BERLIN
(6) Timothy Ryback explains that by early 1933, the Nazi Party faces financial ruin, owing an estimated 90 million marks, and continues to lose ground in state elections. To exploit this weakness, Chancellor Kurt von Schleicherattempts to split the NSDAP by negotiating secretly with Gregor Strasser. Schleicher hopes to peel away the party's moderate faction to form a working majority without Hitler. Strasser, believing he is saving the movement rather than betraying Hitler, considers a role as Vice Chancellor. Despite mounting debt and electoral setbacks, Hitler maintains a belligerent front, eventually declaring a minor vote in Lippe as a revival of party fortunes.1940
(7) Timothy Ryback describes how on January 28, 1933, the political crisis peaks as Kurt von Schleicher confronts Hindenburg, requesting martial law to stabilize the disintegrating Nazi threat. Hindenburg, increasingly stubborn and weary of Schleicher's manipulations, dismisses him instead. The aging President asserts his authority, refusing to be dictated to by the military or political factions. He secretly appoints Werner von Blomberg as Minister of Defense to secure the army's loyalty. Though Hindenburg continues to disdain Hitler, he finds himself out of options, having exhausted every alternative to prevent a total collapse of the constitutional order.1940 BERLIN
(8) Timothy Ryback recounts how on January 30, 1933, Hitler is finally summoned to become Chancellor. The appointment hinges on a frantic, last-minute negotiation in Hindenburg's foyer with media mogul Alfred Hugenberg, who reluctantly joins the coalition after being cornered by Göring and Papen. Hugenberg immediately regrets the decision, realizing he has made the "biggest mistake" of his life. The resulting government photograph captures a stunned cabinet and an angry-looking Hitler. The era of political "hustling" ends as Hitler consolidates power, eventually murdering former rivals, including Strasser and Schleicher, during the 1934 Night of the Long Knives.1936?

Chuck And Julie Show with Chuck Bonniwell and Julie Hayden Colorado Clerk's Association "Gold Standard", Election Integrity and Political Corruption in Colorado We told you it wasn't the “gold standard”. Ashe Epp reports Colorado's largest Clerk has pulled out of the corrupt State Clerk's Association. Naming names and revealing receipts This episode of The Chuck & Julie Show features election integrity expert Ashe Epp discussing the high-profile resignation of El Paso County's clerk from the Colorado County Clerks Association (CCCA). The conversation explores alleged conflicts of interest within the election industry, the strategic "sacrificing" of Secretary of State Jena Griswold by the Democratic establishment, and the internal friction between grassroots conservatives and the GOP leadership following the recent state assembly. The CCCA Resignation and Industry "Incestuousness" The discussion opens with the resignation of El Paso County Clerk Schleicher from his leadership position at the CCCA. Ashe Epp argues that the association has become a "skin suit" for political agendas, specifically naming Matt Crane as a central figure driving policy through a small, exclusive club. The resignation letter allegedly reveals that Schleicher was blocked from meetings with the Department of State due to "trust issues," a claim he later found to be a fabrication by association leadership. The hosts highlight what they describe as an "incestuous" election industry, citing family ties between officials and vendors like Dominion Voting Systems and Runbeck Services. They argue that centralization in election technology creates a complexity that hides potential corruption, leaving smaller rural clerks dependent on the CCCA for resources and professional development they cannot provide themselves. The Strategic "Under-the-Bus" Maneuver for Jena Griswold Apt presents a thesis regarding the sudden shift in the Democratic narrative surrounding Secretary of State Jena Griswold. While previously a "rising star," Griswold is now facing internal criticism and staff-related scandals. Apt suggests this is a coordinated effort to offer her as a "sacrificial lamb" to appease public demands for accountability without changing the underlying system. The theory posits that Griswold is an "isolated political product" while the actual operations of the office are handled by career staff and outside counsel, such as Andrew Klein. By removing Griswold, the establishment may attempt to preserve the "gold standard" reputation of the election system while distancing themselves from her personal controversies and legal battles. GOP Assembly and the Threat of "Jungle Primaries" Chuck Bonino reflects on the recent Republican Assembly, expressing disappointment over the dominance of "establishment" candidates like Gabe Evans, who he claims is backed by "big money" from Americans for Prosperity. The hosts argue that the current caucus and assembly system is under threat from proponents of "jungle primaries," which would allow unaffiliated voters to determine Republican candidates. Bonino contends that this shift would effectively end the influence of the grassroots, as billionaire-funded nonprofits would dictate winners through massive spending. He highlights a fundamental divide within the party regarding the "opt-out" rule, which determines whether the party can prevent non-Republicans from participating in their primary process. Economic Concerns and Denver's Decline The episode concludes with a grim outlook on Colorado's economy. Bonino points to the departure of major companies like Palantir and the devaluation of downtown office buildings, which are reportedly selling for "dimes on the dollar." He blames over-regulation and the potential for new "millionaire taxes" for driving wealth and industry to states like Texas and Florida. The hosts fear that without a significant shift in leadership, the state will continue to lose its high-tech and energy sectors, leaving a hollowed-out economy. The episode underscores a deep-seated distrust of current election management in Colorado and highlights a pivotal moment for the state's Republican Party. Between the legal battles of figures like Tina Peters and the structural debates over primary formats, the hosts suggest that Colorado's political and economic future hinges on whether the "grassroots" can successfully challenge the established "industrial" and "political" complexes.

Welcome back… our first episode of 2026 - and in this episode of Can Marketing Save the Planet, we are joined by marketing strategist Florian Schleicher. Florian shares his experience and provides a compelling insight into how marketing acumen can be the driving force behind a major city's sustainability transformation. In an exciting project with Vienna's policymakers, Florian demonstrates how marketing's role transcended traditional campaigns, integrating strategic storytelling directly into urban planning and civic engagement. An approach rooted in the immense, tangible impact cities have on our collective future, Florian was guided by the data that “70% of all the future infrastructure investment will be decided in cities,” framing the work as a crucial lever for global good. A key philosophical decision was moving beyond guilt to focus on emotional resonance and belonging, guiding city counsellors to “finding initiatives that we can take, and then bringing them into execution whilst always having in the back of our minds that we want create an emotional link. We have to excite them.” The project followed a disciplined, “Up, Down, Create” method: first brainstorming ideas globally, then filtering them down to 18 viable initiatives that fit Vienna, and finally creating one integrated concept. This process ensured initiatives like exploring white rooftops to cool the city were both impactful and communicable. To crystallise the vision, the team crafted a ‘future press release', which acted like a “North Star” for how they wanted the city's progress to be felt and talked about, focusing on the benefits. For Florian, marketing's potential in this space is undeniable. “Marketing definitely was and is part of the problem that we're in right now, but I think it also has the possibility and the capabilities to pull us out of it,” he argues. He sees a critical need for new roles like a “climate communications manager” in cities to bridge the gap between sustainability experts and the public, using the core skills of marketing, creating memories and driving behaviour change. His ultimate hope is that “we don't talk about sustainability anymore, but just about liveability.” Tune in as we talk to Florian about:

2. Key Players in the Rise to Power. Timothy Ryback introduces core players in the 1932–1933 drama. Gregor Strasser was critical to the NSDAP, balancing Hitler's fanatic nationalism with a committed socialist agenda, functioning as a popular coalition builder. On the establishment side were Chancellor Papen and Minister of Defense Schleicher. Schleicher was the political mastermind and "key power broker." Papen was widely seen as Schleicher's unintelligent "puppet." Also prominent was Röhm, who led the SA (Brownshirts). The SA was a 400,000-man private army of stormtroopers used for fundraising and fighting communists in the militarized German streets. 1933
6. Continued Defeats, Financial Ruin, and Schleicher's Strategy. Timothy Ryback discusses how the Nazi party continued its decline, suffering losses in Thuringia and facing severe financial ruin, estimated to be 90 million Reichsmarks in debt. A desperate push for a majority in the small state of Lippe in January failed, though Hitler publicly declared it a triumph. Simultaneously, Chancellor Schleicher, the political mastermind, actively negotiated with Gregor Strasser. Schleicher aimed to break apart the NSDAP by detaching Strasser's socialist faction from Hitler's hardliners (Goebbels and Göring), thereby creating a stable, centrist coalition. Strasser was acting to save the National Socialist Movement through compromise, not to betray Hitler. 1933
7. Schleicher's Dismissal and Hindenburg's Manipulation. Timothy Ryback discusses how on January 28, 1933, Chancellor Schleicher requested six months of martial law from Hindenburg to allow the politically deteriorating Nazi party to stabilize and restore democracy. Hindenburg, angered by Schleicher trying to dictate terms and preempting the decision in a newspaper, dismissed him. Schleicher immediately attempted a coup by ordering Hammerstein, head of the Reichswehr, to intervene. Hindenburg, who proved to be stubborn and manipulative, blocked the coup and told Hammerstein to return to the garrison. Hindenburg then appointed Blomberg as the new Minister of Defense. Exhausted at age 84, Hindenburg ultimately made the "unpleasant task" of appointing Hitler Chancellor. 1933 VON PAPPEN
8. The Final Negotiations and Hitler's Appointment. Tim Ryback discusses how on January 30, 1933, Hitler required the support of media magnate Alfred Hugenberg (40 seats) to achieve the coalition necessary for Hindenburg to appoint him Chancellor. Hugenberg, who sought to be Minister of Economics, desperately opposed Hitler's primary demand: holding new Reichstag elections. Hugenberg knew elections would cost him his vital seats. After holding out until the final moment in a dramatic crisis outside Hindenburg's office, he was cornered and reluctantly agreed. Hindenburg formally appointed Hitler Chancellor at 9:40 AM. Hugenberg subsequently noted he had made "the biggest mistake of his life." Within 18 months, key antagonists Schleicher, Strasser, and Röhm were murdered. 1933 Retry

There's been a massive gap in oncology where people who have been responsible for a dramatic increase in the standard of care have lacked a solid understanding of the business, payment and policy constructs required to deliver it. Dr. Stephen Schleicher has spent the early part of his career working to fill that gap.Dr. Schleicher entered medical school with an interest in oncology, anchored by an appreciation for the psychological toll cancer can have on a person, their family and caregivers that he gained from parents who were both psychologists. During his internal medicine residency at Brigham and Women's Hospital, Dr. Schleicher also worked at McKinsey and earned his MBA at Harvard Business School as part of a fully-funded fellowship. Through this combined experience, he started to develop a niche in the oncology space where clinical, business and policy decisions intersect, at a time when value-based care was just starting to gain momentum. After a fellowship at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center, Dr. Schleicher joined Tennessee Oncology, one of the nation's largest community-based cancer care practices, and shortly after became medical director of value-based care at OneOncology, a large community oncology network founded by Tennessee Oncology that spans multiple states. He subsequently returned his focus to Tennessee Oncology where he served as chief medical officer for two years and still practices as a breast cancer medical oncologist. Dr. Schleicher is also a board member and executive committee member at the Community Oncology Alliance. To set the stage for a Healthcare is Hard series focused on Oncology, Dr. Schleicher talked to Keith Figlioli about both the clinical and business trends influencing cancer care. Topics they discussed include:Community providers vs. health systems. For Dr. Schleicher, the ultimate goal is to give cancer patients the personal feel of a community clinic with the resources – including access to precision medicine and clinical trials – that have historically only existed at academic medical centers. While Dr. Schleicher firmly believes that nearly all cancer care should be delivered outside the hospital, he recognizes the expertise for certain conditions – like rare sarcomas – that only exists at academic medical centers and discussed the dynamics of “coopetition” that exists between health systems and community providers in markets across the country.Oncology's cost center. Drugs already account for a significant portion of spending on oncology care, and with dozens of new FDA approvals for cancer therapies each year – some with extremely high costs – this trend will continue. But there are many other variables contributing to the large percentage of spending that goes towards drugs, including the shift from infusions to more oral medication. Dr. Schleicher explains how reliance on oral medication introduces PBMs and specialty pharmacies into the equation, which can add cost and complexity, and sometimes slow the speed of critical care. The value based care dilemma. Dr. Schleicher talked about how successful The CMS Oncology Care Model (OCM) was at optimizing care for Tennessee Oncology's patients. He says hospitalizations and ER visits went from 20%-30% of costs before OCM to less than 10% now. The remaining 90% of costs now goes towards drugs – even when used appropriately following pathways. The dilemma is that there isn't too much more room for cost improvement in care delivery. Dr. Schleicher discussed how payers need a better understanding of how to incentivize providers around costs they can control, while allowing for expensive therapies if they're the right drug at the right time to improve costs and outcomes in the long run.To hear Stephen and Keith discuss these topics and more, listen to this episode of Healthcare is Hard: A Podcast for Insiders.

Bryan, Texas artist Tyler Vail is the Grand Prize Winner in the L. Ron Hubbard Illustrators of the Future Contest earning him the Golden Brush Award trophy and $5,000. His illustration of the story, "Squiddy," by Writers of the Future Winner John Eric Schleicher is published in the international bestselling anthology, L. Ron Hubbard Presents Writers of the Future Volume 40 which was officially released on May 7th. Mr. Vail was honored along with the other winners in the Writers and Illustrators of the Future Contests on April 25th at the Taglyan Complex in Hollywood, California. Tyler Vail was born in 1996 in Dallas, Texas. At a young age, Tyler was deeply inspired by fantasy and sci-fi media and would spend many late nights striving to bring his ideas to life in the form of drawings. He would later refine his skills as an illustrator by joining every art contest he could find, actively participating in online communities, and getting feedback from anyone that would look at his art. Today, Tyler continues his passion for art and dreaming of fantastic new worlds, characters, and creatures. He enjoys working with other creatives to share in a collaborative and positive experience and strives for excellence in all aspects of the artistic process. Missoula, Montana writer John Eric Schleicher is a winner in the L. Ron Hubbard Writers of the Future Contest and was honored along with eleven other writers and twelve artists at the Taglyan Complex in Hollywood, California on April 25th. His story, "Squiddy," is published along with the other writers' and illustrators' stories and art in the international bestselling anthology, L. Ron Hubbard Presents Writers of the Future Volume 40 which will be officially released on May 7th. John Eric Schleicher writes stories that leave behind a fantastical aftertaste long after reading. While story rules the roost, John Eric's favorite authors tell their tales with panache and pleasing prose. Toni Morrison, Cormac McCarthy, Stephen King, and Ray Bradbury top his literary cake. When not reading or writing, John Eric enjoys wandering wonderstruck, whether on two legs or knobby wheels, the mountains near his home in Missoula, Montana. His greatest loves are his son Ryder and wife Ashlee, to whom “Squiddy” is dedicated. “Squiddy,” his first professional sale, is a spawn of the post-apocalyptic imaginings of an extraterrestrial Squid invasion and explores the self-destructive habits we seek to escape or soften despair. Cities have lived with exclusionary zoning for decades, if not generations. Is inclusionary zoning the answer? Inclusionary zoning, or IZ, requires developers to set aside a share of units in new buildings for low- or moderate-income households, seeking to increase the supply of affordable homes and integrate neighborhoods racially and socioeconomically. But how well does it accomplish these goals? This week we're joined by the Mercatus Center's Dr. Emily Hamilton to discuss her research on how IZ programs have impacted homebuilding and housing prices in the Washington, D.C. region, and the ironic reality that the success of inclusionary zoning relies on the continued existence of exclusionary zoning. Also, Shane and Mike rant about nexus studies. Originally aired in 2022.Show notes:Hamilton, E. (2021). Inclusionary zoning and housing market outcomes. Eric welcomes historian Timothy Ryback, the Co-Founder and Director of the Institute for Historical Justice and Reconciliation in the Hague. He has been Director and Vice President of the Salzburg Seminar and a lecturer in History at Harvard University and is the author of Takeover: Hitler's Final Rise to Power (New York: Alfred A. Knopf, 2024). They discuss why Tim wrote this book and why it seems especially timely now, the political and historical contingency of Hitler's ability to seize power and why it resulted not just from large historical forces but by a series of decisions by individual players in the drama. The roles of President Hindenberg, Chancellor Franz Von Papen, Chancellor Kurt von Schleicher, and media mogul and nationalist party leader Alfred Hugenberg in the decisions that led Hitler to the Chancellery and the fact that the Nazis never commanded more than 37% of the vote in Germany. They touch on the role of political parties, political violence and the role of big business in the rise of Hitler as well as the critique of liberalism that Hitler and others shared of liberal democracy in Weimar Germany and its resonance in contemporary U.S. politics with figures like Peter Thiel and JD Vance.
