In this episode of the show, Baldy, Jamie and Stu look back at week 3 of IPL 2025 through a stock market lens. Who are we buying? Who are we selling? And what are we watching with our fingers poised ready to pounce in the coming weeks? We start this week with an injury update - and it's not been good news both on the field for the Kiwis Lockie Ferguson and Glenn Phillips, and in the podcast studio, with almost all of us suffering from one ailment or another. Once things do turn positive, it's the Gujarat Titans who are first to receive praise - in particular Sai Sudharsan and the consistency he's shown throughout the tournament so far. We also talk about Punjab's Indian core and the golden duck to century turnaround for Priyansh Arya. Dr Jamie takes us through the mindset needed to succeed across a long tournament like the IPL, in which you're bound to fail along the way - perhaps more often than you do succeed. Next we talk about the Sunrisers Hyderabad after Abhishek Sharma's outrageous 141, which saw them chase down almost 250 and maybe kick-start their turnaround. Is it time to load up on SRH stock? Or are there still worrying signs? Things get dark when discussion turns to CSK - the intent has disappeared, no one is scoring runs and not even MS Dhoni cameos can really get the crowd excited any more. Can they turn it around? Or is it already time to sell all our stock despite it reaching an all-time low? To round out the show, we detour briefly to talk about Harry Brook's appointment as England captain, we talk Digvesh Rathi's celebrations, Vipraj Nigam establishing DC's spin trio & Nicholas Pooran's six-hitting prowess as LSG continue to impress. We expect to be back in your feed later in the week with more IPL coverage. In this episode of the 2025 ICC Champions Trophy daily review, Binksy and Stu look back at the second semi-final between South Africa and New Zealand, then glance forward to a Dubai final where the Black Caps will face the might of India. It was just about the perfect performance for New Zealand, with Rachin Ravindra and Kane Williamson both scoring hundreds to set up a platform from which Glenn Phillips and Daryl Mitchell could put the icing on the cake. On the other hand, right when it looked like South Africa might do the same, Mitchell Santner ripped the heart out of the Proteas middle order, picking up Bavuma, Van der Dussen and Klaasen within a short space of time. David Miller scored a consolation hundred, but the Black Caps spinners continued to squeeze and booked themselves a date with India in the final. To round out the show, we discussed a couple of the key things to watch out for in that big dance, which sees the best two sides in the tournament line up in what we hope will be a classic final. In this episode of the 2025 ICC Champions Trophy daily review, Raj and Stu look back at the final group match of the tournament between India and New Zealand, then glance forward to the semi-finals. The Black Caps made a brilliant start in Dubai, with a quality opening burst from the seamers and some outstanding catching headlined by Glenn Phillips' screamer to dismiss Virat Kohli, but ultimately it was India's spinners who had the final say. We discussed the approach of both sides, how it might translate to the semi-finals and give praise to the efforts of Varun Chakravarthy among India's four-pronged spin attack and Kane Williamson's fighting knock. To round out the show, we look ahead to India's semi-final against Australia and New Zealand's game against South Africa. Will Varun play? Can NZ take wickets through the middle? Will Rohit and Shubman take the game away from Australia in the first 10 overs? How scared are we about Heinrich Klaasen and David Miller?! In this episode of the Top Order Podcast, Jamie, Baldy and Stu discuss some of the major talking points from the past week, including Australia's 2-0 Test series win in Sri Lanka, the England v India ODI series, a tri-series for the Black Caps, Champions Trophy injuries and some New Zealand domestic players we're keeping an eye on. We start the show by discussing Australia's 2-0 Test series win in Sri Lanka. Despite Baldy's worries about selection, it was another dominant performance from the Aussies at Galle - led by Steve Smith with the bat and in the field. We also talk about Dimuth Karunaratne's legacy in what was his 100th and final Test. Next we move to white-ball cricket, with England taking on India in ODIs. Results keep going India's way, thanks to an excellent return to form for Rohit Sharma, Ravindra Jadeja's craft & the all-round contributions of Axar Patel. There's also chat about England's batters, dot balls in the middle overs and what clues selections are giving us for the Champions Trophy. We then turn our attention to the tri-series between the Black Caps, Pakistan and South Africa, which has seen a stunning hundred from Glenn Phillips, a record-breaking debut from Matthew Breetzke and a mammoth partnership between Kane Williamson and Devon Conway. We discuss the importance of these fixtures and what we might be learning with one eye on the ICC tournament to follow. To round out the show, Stu gives a shout out to the Kerr sisters and the Boyle brothers, before sharing a few names he'll be watching for the remainder of the NZ domestic summer. In this episode of the Top Order Podcast it's a Black Caps focused show as Raj and Stu look back at New Zealand's performances in 2024 take stock of where the side is at heading into a relatively quiet 2025. We open the show by reviewing the 2024 results, which paint a picture of a middling side that had a big gap between their best performances and their worst ones, before discussing a bowling attack that saw some big changes over the past 12 months with the retirements of Neil Wagner and Tim Southee, plus the emergence of the likes of Will O'Rourke and Ben Sears. We also discuss the spin stocks and whether this is an area of concern. As we move to the batting department, there's plenty to discuss - primarily the lack of runs by the majority of the core group of players. We talk about Devon Conway, Will Young, Glenn Phillips, Rachin Ravindra, Kane Williamson and many others, plus the central contracting system and how New Zealand Cricket are managing the competing pull of franchise leagues. To round out the show, we look ahead to a 2025 fixture list that looks quite bare after the Champions Trophy to consider where we'd like the side to be by the end of the year.. Henry Moeran is alongside former England batter Mark Ramprakash & Stephan Shemilt to review the second day of England's first Test against New Zealand in Christchurch. England vice-captain Ollie Pope, who scored 77, speaks to Stephan about bouncing back after a disappointing series in Pakistan. They also discuss Harry Brook's fortuitous yet typical innings, how New Zealand will be ‘kicking themselves' with six dropped catches despite Glenn Phillips' "worldy" of a catch. Where does Jofra Archer fit into England's new-look bowling attack? Plus, Mark remembers the 2002 Test in Christchurch where the late great Graham Thorpe scored an unbeaten 200.Live text commentary of England's Test series against New Zealand is available on the BBC Sport website & app.
Six dropped catches spoilt New Zealand's fielding and the chance to remove England cheaply on the second day of the first cricket test in Christchurch. The visitors are 319 for five in reply to the hosts' 348 with Harry Brook 132 and Ben Stokes 37. Brook was spilt four times - Ben Duckett and Ben Stokes survived other blemishes. The culprits, in no particular order, were Tom Latham – times three - Glenn Phillips, Devon Conway and Tom Blundell. Phillips redeemed himself with a one-handed dive to his right at gully to dismiss - and astonish - Ollie Pope on 77. NZME Cricket Commentator Andrew Alderson joined D'Arcy to preview day 3 of the test. LISTEN ABOVE. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
Unprecedented scenes under the gavel at the Indian Premier League cricket auction in Saudi Arabia. A 13-year-old has become the competition's youngest recruit, but several top Black Caps have missed out. Left-hand bat and spinner Vaibhav Suryavanshi was picked up by Rajasthan for 223 thousand dollars - for context, he was born the same week India won the 2011 50-over World Cup at home. Four more New Zealanders have sold, joining Trent Boult, Rachin Ravindra and Devon Conway. Glenn Phillips has gone to Gujarat, Mitchell Santner will join Mumbai and Lockie Ferguson is set to play for Punjab - each went for 406 thousand dollars. Uncapped Auckland batter Bevon-John Jacobs has been recruited by Mumbai for 61 thousand dollars. Previous big-earners Kane Williamson, Daryl Mitchell and Kyle Jamieson missed out. In this episode of the show, we reflect on the Black Caps' 3-0 series win against India, which left interesting questions for both sides as they head into their next fixtures. We also discuss potential World Test Championship final scenarios and the flurry of white-ball series from around the world. The Black Caps made it a clean sweep against India with a 25-run victory at Wankhede Stadium, to cap off a remarkable month for New Zealand cricket. Ajaz Patel was crowned player of the match and Will Young the player of the series, but those performances might still not be enough to get them into the starting XI for the home summer. We talk through the spin bowlers on show, heap praise on Daryl Mitchell's fighting effort with bat in hand and raise questions that now face this Indian side: Are they still the best Test team in the world? Do Gautam Gambhir and the leadership group need to make changes? Can Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma bounce back against Australia? Is there a place for all three of Ravi Ashwin, Ravindra Jadeja and Washington Sundar in the XI away from home? We also discuss whether the ICC need to consider moving to four-day Tests, then take a quick look at the white-ball series featuring NZ, Sri Lanka, England, West Indies, Australia and Pakistan - so many that we ran out of time to cover the 47 other series that are currently under way. We'll be back again next week with a full preview of the 2024 Border-Gavaskar Trophy, with the Black Caps v England preview not far behind that. It was hardly surprising Mitchell Santner woke up sore the morning after his match-winning heroics. Twenty-nine straight overs while bowling the Black Capsto a famous victory would have that effect. Santner's 13-wicket haul inspired a 113-run win in Pune on Saturday, recording the third-best figures by a New Zealander and the third-best for any bowler against India. The spinner held up an end while shutting down the hosts' chase, battling a side strain that required stretching between overs. A maiden series triumph within reach, Santner was the constant and content to later pay a physical price. “The side was all right last night – I was numbing it with a few beers,” he said. “But this morning it's a little bit sore.” The good news for Santner is the Black Caps can now enjoy their historic success and rest weary bodies before gunning for a series sweep. “It's ideal that test only went three days,” he said. “It took a toil on the rig, I bowled 29 overs in a row which is very foreign for me. I'm usually used to four or 10.” Such is the limited life of a spinner combining black cap and red ball, knowing that no matter their ability or achievements offshore, a summer played on green pitches can still leave them superfluous. Teammate Ajaz Patel will attest to that – without a test wicket at home despite taking 10 in an innings on his last trip to India – and Santner is accustomed to an “in and out” schedule when the longest form occupies the international calendar. Seizing opportunities is essential, and although some thought he had missed a chance while held to one wicket, Santner developed a rhythm and confidence during the 2-0 series defeat by Sri Lanka. The left-armer felt he bowled well without reward on that tour, receiving no luck and in the second test no assistance from the pitch. Heading to Pune, having watched his team thrive in seam-friendly conditions in Bengaluru, Santner knew what type of surface would await the tourists. This was his shot, one he would not miss. “The first test was a massive achievement but we had conditions that were suited to us in the first innings with the ball, and we made the most of it,” he said. “Coming here, we knew it was going to be a different challenge altogether – a classic Indian track where it would be slow and take some turn later on. “That'swhat's most pleasing about this win — we beat them at their own game. We outspun them and outplayed them in their own conditions.” There was no doubt about that, nor the calibre of conquered foe. Ravichandran Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja took their combined tally to 842 test wickets, while Washington Sundar returned 11-115 in his first test in more than three years. But watching from the sideline and in the middle as Washington began with a seven-wicket bag, Santner joined Patel and Glenn Phillips in formulating a plan. All three New Zealand spinners were removed by the 25-year-old and the trio made note of what worked — and what didn't for the wicketless Jadeja. “We had a lot of chats us a spin unit,” Santner said. “We felt India might have bowled a little quickly in their first innings and it was skidding on. “We saw Washington and Ashwin slow it up a touch under that 90km mark and it started to take some turn. We wanted to make that our stock and go either way from there. “On a pitch where you're not doing anything different but one will skid and one will turn, it becomes an accuracy thing. That's what we tried to do – be accurate – and hopefully one spins and they nick it or one skids and it hits them on the pad. “That what the mode of dismissal throughout that whole test – either bowled, lbw or they nicked it.” Of Santner's 13 wickets, only one came via a different method, while Phillips' three scalps were the same. Although the allrounder pair outshone the team's specialist, Santner shared the plaudits with both Patel and Phillips, believing the third test in Mumbai – where Patel bagged his full set in 2021 – could bring a reversal of roles. “We speak a lot about bowling in partnerships, especially in these conditions where someone might not be getting the wickets but doing a job at the other end,” Santner said. “In this test it flipped for me and I'mpretty pleased to get the wickets, but we talk about Jazzy and GP's roles as well, they did a massive job in just trying to squeeze and build. New Zealand celebrate Mitchell Santner's dismissal of Virat Kohli. Photo / Photosport “Next test, it might be different again. Someone else might get the wickets and it might be my role to dot it up.” The competitor in Santner must hope for a repeat of Pune, especially with another duel to be won against a great of the modern game. The 32-year-old had missed Virat Kohli's wicket in three previous tests but, having claimed the Indian linchpin four times with a white ball, picked up his scalp twice in the second test. The first dismissal – a low full toss that Kohli missed – would not warrant a spot on the career highlight reel. But Santner was pleased by the second, rapping the pad and forcing a review that left a reluctant batter to trudge from the field. “It's always nice to get Kohli out,” Santner said. “I tried to bowl on the seam and get a couple of go away, then intentionally bowled a cross-seam to see if it would skid, and it stayed down and gathered pace. “I don't think he was happy with the umpire's call. We have good banter off the field as well – I've got him out a couple of times and I think he's aware of that.” Kohli and teammates will now be well aware of the threat brought by Santner, sore side and all. - by Kris Shannon, NZ HeraldSee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
The Black Caps have suffered a fourth consecutive test loss, after an innings and 154-run defeat by Sri Lanka in their second match in Galle. In this episode of the show, Baldy, Binksy, Raj and Stu are back in the same room again after a short break to discuss the cricketing week (or couple of weeks) that was, with a focus on England v Sri Lanka and the upcoming six away tests for the Black Caps. Recorded after Day 1 of the third Test between England and Sri Lanka, we begin with a conversation about bad light, prompted by the lack of play on that first day. Baldy looks to the Olympics for a solution, whereas Binksy suggests interchangeable balls - but how much of an issue is this, really? We then move to the on-field action, where Kamindu Mendis has been Sri Lanka's shining light in the series so far, Joe Root has strengthened his case as England's greatest batter of all time, Brendon McCullum has extended his coaching contract and picked up the white-ball squad as well, and Gus Atkinson added a century to his already impressive home summer. To round out the show, we look ahead to two months of the Black Caps playing Test cricket, first against Afghanistan, followed by Sri Lanka and then India. We talk about lineups, the threat of Afghanistan, spin-bowling, Glenn Phillips and two new names to the central contract list, with Nathan Smith and Josh Clarkson added this week. There's also a quick mention about Australia's new white-ball era sans David Warner, and Bangladesh's historic Test series victory in Pakistan. We'll be back again next week to wrap up England v Sri Lanka and New Zealand v Afghanistan. I still don't know why there weren't any warmup games. I can only assume, only assume, as Dylan said - that T20 just doesn't matter as much to New Zealand cricket as the other forms of the game otherwise. They simply would not have sent the players into battle underprepared. There is a rationale to say a decent chunk of the side have come from the IPL, where they've been playing a lot of T20 cricket, but the fact is most of them didn't actually play a heck of a lot in the IPL. Most of the New Zealand players who were in the IPL weren't really first choice for their sides. And those who did play didn't exactly set the world on fire - it has to be said. The fact is, of the others, they've hardly played any T20 cricket and all recently. Finn Allen's last game of T20 cricket was in February, Same with Devon Conway, Same with Glenn Phillips. These guys haven't played T20 for three or four months, so to expect them to go into unfamiliar surroundings, and perform straight away in what has turned out to be a pretty crucial match is fanciful. Yes, they're good players, I don't think there's any selection issue here. You wouldn't say that these aren't our best T20 players on form and reputation. So, it's not as though you say, ‘he shouldn't be there, he should be there instead.' Yes, you can talk about selection of the 11 for yesterday. I'd have Rachin Ravindra in there and probably Jimmy Neesham as well. And they may make those changes. But by and large, it's our best players in the squad. It just seems to be a complete oversight in terms of giving them any preparation at all, Afghanistan aren't a bad side, we're not talking about a minnow anymore. Afghanistan are a good white ball side, and they proved that yesterday. You can't go in half-baked. LISTEN ABOVESee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

New Zealand v Australia, Christchurch Day 4: It was a final day as good as we could have hoped. A decisive strike early but a decisive miss to go with it. A partnership that built. Then a dramatic final sequence. New Zealand and Australia had a stunner, as the clouds rolled in and the afternoon darkened. Alex Carey was involved, Mitchell Marsh, Ben Sears, Glenn Phillips, and inevitably late in a chase, Pat Cummins. This week on the show, we're all back in the same room to discuss the Black Caps' demoralising loss to Australia at the Basin Reserve, as well as a preview/review of the 4th and 5th Tests between India and England. We start the episode with some initial thoughts from the Kiwi contingent about the pain of another Test loss to Australia - a game where New Zealand showed signs they could compete on days 1 and 3, but crumbled on the even days on their way to a very familiar scoreline against their Trans-Tasman neighbours. There's plenty of praise for Cameron Green and Nathan Lyon, as well as Matt Henry and Glenn Phillips who provided the positives from a New Zealand point of view. We also discuss the make up of a Black Caps bowling attack in transition, a seemingly indestructible quartet of Australian bowlers, the impact of injuries and the form of Marnus Labuschagne and Alex Carey. In the second half of the show, we look back at the 4th Test between India and England, which saw India secure a series victory in Ranchi. Was it a missed opportunity for England? Or do India deserve all the credit for winning the biggest moments of this series. We touch on crucial performances from Dhruv Jurel and Shubman Gill, highlighting their composure under huge pressure. Joe Root's hundred demonstrated his class, but India's spin trio of Ravindra Jadeja, Ravichandran Ashwin and Kuldeep Yadav made life difficult for England in the third innings and turned the match back India's way. Finally, we preview the 5th Test in Dharamasala - potentially the hundredth for Jonny Bairstow and Ravi Ashwin - with an eye to conditions and how England may look back on this series when all is said and done. We'll be down at Hagley Oval in a few days' time at the second Test between the Black Caps and Australia, so expect plenty of content from that match and also the final India v England Test. New Zealand v Australia, Wellington Day 3: Both teams kept the foot down during a Test that keeps motoring along, with Nathan Lyon having some fun playing at being a batter before Glenn Phillips had even more playing at being a bowler. A dramatic second session saw New Zealand keep some flame of hope alive, and overnight that lamp has been entrusted to Rachin Ravindra and Darryl Mitchell. It's all set up for a belter on Day 4. Grandstand Cricket's Corbin Middlemas, Xavier Doherty and Bryan Waddle run you through all the action from day three of the first Test between New Zealand and Australia from Wellington's Basin Reserve. Day three was highlighted by the off-spinners - first Nathan Lyon top scored with 41 for the visitors, and the Glenn Phillips took his maiden five wicket haul in Test cricket to give New Zealand the slimmest hope of victory. At stumps the hosts are 3/111, needing another 258 runs to win.
New Zealand v Australia, Wellington Day 2: Well, that escalated quickly. The morning went by as Cameron Green and Josh Hazlewood worked their way into historical territory that involved the Big Ship Warwick Amstrong and Final Word fave Arthur Mailey, before a series of calamities befell New Zealand's batting. Glenn Phillips was great fun as ever, Matt Henry kept carrying this team, and Kane Williamson had one of his strangest days. The Black Caps have eased past Afghanistan this morning, keeping their perfect record and also boosting their net-run-rate, which could be crucial at the back-end of the tournament. Batting first, the Black Caps posted 288 for 6 in their 50 overs, with Glenn Phillips top-scoring with 71, opener Will Young and captain Tom Latham also posted half centuries. In reply, Afghanistan were bowled out for 139, fast bowler Lockie Ferguson and spinner Mitchell Santner both picked up three wickets. It was New Zealand's fourth match of the World Cup in India, and they seem to be well placed to progress to the semi-finals as other teams have faltered. Former Black Cap Ronnie Hira spoke to Corin Dann.
This is the The Guerilla Cricket Podcast World and on this episode we have highlights from Game 16 at the ICC Cricket World Cup in India. Afghanistan won the toss and elected to field. It was the third time lucky for the Black Caps in the early hours of this morning. After losing their first two T20 matches against England, the Black Caps cruised to a 74-run victory at Edgbaston. Opener Finn Allen top scored for the Black Caps with 83, while Glenn Phillips scored a quick-fire 69 to help the team post 202 for 5 from their 20 overs. In response England only managed 128 with Kyle Jamieson and Ish Sohi both taking three wickets. The BBC's Henry Moeran joins us now.
Episode No. 598 features artist Faye HeavyShield and curator Glenn Phillips. The Pulitzer Arts Foundation in Saint Louis is presenting "Faye HeavyShield: Confluences," a career-spanning presentation of HeavyShield's work that includes drawings, sculptures and installations, and two commissions that engage the landscapes and histories of the Saint Louis region. HeavyShield's spare, often minimal vocabulary and use of modest materials often addresses land, traditional Kainai stories, and HeavyShield's experiences in the residential school system. The exhibition, which was curated by Tamara Schenkenberg, will be on view through August 6. A member of the Kainai (Blood) Nation, part of the Blackfoot Confederacy, Heavyshield lives and works in the foothills of southern Alberta. Phillips discusses "Barbara T. Smith: The Way to Be," a presentation of work from the first 50 years of Smith's career (1931-81). Phillips co-curated the exhibition with Pietro Rigolo. It's on view at the Getty Research Institute in Los Angeles through July 16. Smith is a pioneering second-wave feminist artist whose work addressed the seemingly limited options available to women from Smith's class and racial background. Phillips worked with Smith to present the exhibition in her own voice, which coincides with the Getty's publication of Smith's memoir, "The Way to Be: A Memoir." Amazon and Bookshop offer it for $24-46.
