Have we found the oldest profession in the world? Yes we have... our guest today is Ian, who is a Blacksmith, a job which first dates back to over 5000 years ago. He is a master of his craft, who spends his days at his forge, heating metal to ridiculous temperatures, and shaping them into beautiful and practical things. He also makes random things like medieval guillotines, metal flowers, and ornate iron gates. The good news is, Ian still has all 10 fingers, which after listening to this episode, will surprise you. ☀️Come and see us at Pub in the Park on 18th May (Marlow) or 1st June (London)! Bex Simon is a British Artsmith who has overcome difficult mental health issues to become highly sought after for her creative work in metal. Bex is unconstrained in her approach to design by combining geometric shapes and textures. Her sculptures and public art tell stories relative to the surrounding environment and can be found around the UK. Bex was born in Chertsey, Surrey in 1973, the third of four children—she has an older sister and brother and a younger brother. She reflects on a very strict upbringing from parents Tim, a computer programmer and Gel a retired teacher who later volunteered at a school for handicapped children; a relationship which has mellowed with time and understanding of Bex's mental health. Bex was attracted to the art of blacksmithing as a teenager and despite struggling at school with dyslexia, she studied at the Surrey Institute of Art and Design – Foundation graduating in 1992. In 1995 she graduated with a BA in Three-Dimensional Design in Metal Surrey from the Institute of Art and Design; followed in 1998 by a Diploma and National Certificate from Hereford College of Technology and in 2017 a Level 3 Diploma in Advanced Forge Work DFS from Herefordshire and Ludlow College. Are you aware that you are in a war? In today's culture, there is an assault against men and their role as fathers. In the message "Fatherhood," Duane Sheriff draws unique parallels between a blacksmith and a father who prepares his home for spiritual warfare. In 1 Samuel 13:19-22, the Philistines removed Israelite blacksmiths before the battle. Israel needed their blacksmiths to make swords and other weapons to fight in the war. Likewise, fathers are the blacksmiths in their homes. Men forge, shape, and temper their children to prepare them for life's battles, protecting them from the world's negative influences. Fathers equip children with the moral clarity, character, and strong work ethic necessary for success. This world seeks to remove or feminize the blacksmith, thereby weakening our families. Fathers must reclaim their role, not suppress their masculinity. Under God's guidance, fathers have a crucial role in ensuring their children are ready to face challenges and not become susceptible to the deceptions and hardships of the world. Fathers, be the spiritual leaders and warriors God created you to be. Embrace your divine purpose, knowing your influence shapes the next generation.

This composition reimagines the call of the blacksmith tree frog as illuminating the night sky in an ecological park in Brazil, as if the night were otherwise silent, and the frogs were painting the sky like a canvas with their calls. Four channels of heavily-effected, sparkling frog calls interplay with one another, as the "real" frog calls periodically fade up and down, adding a dreamlike rhythmic pulse into the piece. The piece was composed entirely on a Torso S-4 sampler, and every sound is derived from the original source recording. Blacksmith tree frogs in Brazil reimagined by Cities and Memory.

Riley and I were honored to be asked to judge a WCB event and took a lot of pride in trying to do the right thing to judge fair and honestly. In this episode we talked about our experience on how that event went for us to judge. Let me tell ya, it ain't as easy as you would think! There's a lot of shoes that get judged in three days as well as picking up a lot of horse's feet to be judged and scored too. Honestly we learned a lot from being on that side of the spectrum and can try to implement those things for the next contest we decide to enter. Making a Scene Presents An Interview with Don MerckleA darkly honest and wry singer/songwriter out of Charleston, South Carolina, Don Merckle's songs are firmly planted among the fertile mixed traditions of American music. He is a workman's poet, capable of delivering a rock and roll growl or a quiet dose of smoky barroom introspection with equal passion. He has led the popular Appalachian/Irish outfit Loch Ness Johnny, co-fronted the rambunctious Alt-Country American Gun, and founded the lively Don Merckle & the Blacksmiths. http://www.makingascene.org

David Gulley FWCF On the 2nd of May 2024 we received the sad news of the passing of David Gulley FWCF.Born on the 4th of August 1939 in Plymouth Devon, David grew up with an obsession for horses, his mother once telling him of his fascination of the Shire horses working in the streets Plymouth. When David reached the age of 15 due to the lack of farriery apprenticeships being available due to mechanisation, David took on a 4-year apprenticeship in Blacksmithing and Engineering. On completion of his apprenticeship in 1960 he was called up for National Service into the British Army. As he signed up, he asked about the possibility of being an Army Farrier, of which the ill-informed Army recruiting Sergeant replied, “there was not such a thing anymore”. David then opted to become a Driver. Whilst in basic training Davids unit was visited by a recruiting officer from the Royal Army Veterinary Corps (RAVC), looking for recruits. David asked the officer did they have Farriers? The officer replied “yes”. At that point David told the officer that if he could transfer to the forge, he would instantly sign up for 22 years' service, the maximum engagement you can sign up for. In late 1960 David moved to Melton Mowbray and started working at the Remount Depot, now known as the Defence Animal Training Regiment, and started his life as an Army Farrier Apprentice at the old Army School of Farriery (ASF). Coincidently David joined the school 1 day after another farriery legend and lifelong friend David “Slim” Symons FWCF (hons). David was lucky enough to be taken under the wing of Jock Green a very well-regarded Army farrier instructor who pushed David to excel through hard work and determination. David managed to achieve the uncompressible feat of becoming a B1 Army farriery instructor and the rank of full Corporal in under 2 years. After 9 years of being based at the ASF teaching and competing David took the decision to leave the army and set up his own business. These were the days pre regulation, which would not become an act of parliament for a few years. At the time there was a lack of good farriers in the Leicestershire area servicing the fledgling equine leisure industry, with many untrained farriers cold shoeing applying shoes poorly. David was lucky enough to get the opportunity to repurpose a disused cattle shed into a forge, which is where he remained for the rest of his life in Thorpe Satchville, Leicestershire with his partner Judy. It wasn't long before David had built a busy business and the requirement for more manpower, so started his long list of successful apprentices. The first of which was Andrew Speck RSS, which went on to include the likes of Cecil Swan, Gary Darlow, Kevin Green, Joe Bryan and Andrew James. He went on to train 24 apprentices in total and was always proud of the achievements of all he trained and had said countless times that his proudest achievement was training his own son Micheal. On retirement he was presented a “Family Tree”, by some of his ex-apprentices, starting with David, his apprentices, their apprentices and so on. To this date there are 5 generations of farriers with lineage back to David, over time this will grow and will remain one of Davids Legacies. After leaving the Army David's involvement with the National Association of Farriers, Blacksmiths and Agricultural Engineers (now known as BFBA) began. Joining his local branch, Leicestershire, David became an active member and very quickly rising to the position of chairman. With the registration act looming on the horizon, David was proactive in putting on training and testing for farriers in the area to achieve their Registered Shoeing Smiths (RSS) exams. In Davids own words this was all about trying to make farriers better. David always held horse welfare as the most important part of farriery. He went on to sit t

The Deanery Project is holding a meeting of the minds for maritime blacksmiths Saturday. It's called a "hammer in"... and it's a traditional gathering typically held at a blacksmith's forge, to show off gear and techniques to the rest of the blacksmithing community. Portia Clark spoke to a couple of blacksmiths who will be attending.
Farmers harvested crops using sickles and scythes. Bakers made unleavened bread for different customs and occasions. Blacksmiths made everyday objects and weapons from wrought iron and steel. Candlemakers made candles from fat, tallow, and beeswax. Carpenters cut timber to make fences, beams, planks, doors, and furniture. Apothecaries sold wine, spices, herbs, and medicines. For some among you, Vulcan conjures mental images of Star Trek, with the name being that of the planet Spock calls home. For others, you'll know Vulcan as the Roman god of fire, volcanoes, and blacksmiths. That's the incarnation of Vulcan we'll be looking at in this article. He's the equivalent of the Greek Hephaestus. His worship dates at least to the 8th century BCE, as far as records go, when the Romans built him a shrine. He was an important god for the Romans, and like Silvanus and Juno, he was also important to ordinary people - not just the Roman state. Let's look at some of his myths and how people worshipped him in this week's episode of Fabulous Folklore! This past week I had the honor of once again of attending the Catskill Mountain Makers Camp in East Durham NY. Blacksmiths, woodworkers, artists and makers convene there for fellowship and general making. Tools, techniques and tricks galore with so many disciplines and things to see it can be over whelming. One of the highlights is that Photographer Mark Adams takes amazing portraits of all the attendees and captures excitement, enthusiasm and probably some other things I'll get into with him when he comes on the podcast soon. Anyway, Mark approached me last year about leading a panel discussion on creativity and I was honored. He picked 4 incredibly diverse and creative people who have figured out a way to find their voices in the disciplines they chose. Leah Aripotch, Andrea De Leon, Joshua Prince and Keith Décent joined me for a conversation on Creativity and what to do with it and how to follow your own path. It was really fun to hear their perspective and hope it resonates with the listener. To give a little back office context, we were in a frozen tent with a space heater it was in the low 40º F and there were lots of trucks, golf carts, clanging, banging and grinding in the background. It was Makers Camp so that what you get, so please pardon the audio. It was great fun and I was honored to be apart of it. Thanks again Mark.
