In this episode, we were joined by Mark Stavish, the Director of the Institute for Hermetic Studies for a great conversation across a myriad of topics. Mark gave us a few predictions for 2024 along with his no-holds-barred thoughts regarding the state of the esoteric today, and the importance of finding yourself as well as a group of like-minded practitioners. As a rule, we do not edit our podcast episodes. They are recorded as a live session with no script. Our episodes are always a showcase of free-flowing conversation and the guest's opinions are their own as they are entitled to be. We all must learn to work together and that includes working with others whose opinions do not always align. This was a large part of the conversation in that we are too often separated from others because they do not match our personal criteria for acceptance or even listening. How much we miss by making knee-jerk, emotional decisions because someone didn't use the 'right' words or feel like we do. We are fortunate to have someone of Mark's caliber in our midst and his exceptionally thorough knowledge combines perfectly with his ability to explain complex topics simply; it is truly a blessing, especially for those dipping their toe into the very deep pool of the esoteric.
In this episode, we interviewed our favorite curmudgeon & expert on Hermetic practice, ceremonial magic, powwow, and the esoteric world in general. Mark is the founder and director of the Institute for Hermetic Studies based in nearby Wyoming, PA, and is the author of a multitude of excellent esoteric works. In addition to writing, he is a highly sought-after national speaker in regard to all things esoteric, occult, and quite frankly intellectual. We consider ourselves very fortunate, to both be local to him; as well as for him to take the time to come in at Zero Dark Thirty in the morning to speak with us. Mark does so much for this community and we are thrilled to present this interview. We hope you all have just as much of a good time listening as we had when we recorded it. Mark Stavish is back on the Thoth Hermes Podcast! And when you have someone like him to talk to, you choose subjects that need clarification, a structured mind and above all, a great knowledge of the field we all like: occultism, hermetism and the Western Traditions. Dualism and especially Non-Dualism have been terms that have found a lot of attention especially during the last 15 years or so. But how does Non-Dualism work in a hermetic and magical context, where duality seems to be the foundation of the material life. What is the difference between duality and dualism. What is the difference between a Gnostic dualism and the Hermetic approach? And why is Traditionalism or Perennialism, as it is often called (is it the same, actually?) also being sometimes under attack. In his very frank and outspoken way Mark will try to give answers to those questions, not without posing others. A highly interesting and educational talk! Mark's very interesting blog "voxhermes" The Institute for Hermetic Studies, led by Mark Stavish Its YouTube Channel Music played in this episode I have been very eclectic again this week when chosing the music... 1) AKA DUA - James Stone A beautiful interpretation of an Ancient Egyptian Hymn or Chant that many of you will know, be it as a Thelemite, a Hermeticist, Egyptologist or whatever. Here is its text and a translation (Track starts at 7:00) 2) ECCE BEATAM LUCEM FOR 40 VOICES One of the most astonishing pieces of classical choral music, and only one of two written for 40 (!) voices, which makes it sound full and harmonious in a very special way! From 16th-century Italian Renaissance, by Alessandro Striggio (Track starts at 56:22) 3) DIR DANKEN WIR DIE FREUDE From the Masonic Cantata "Dir, Herrscher des Weltalls" (To you, Ruler of the Universe) by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart (Track starts at 1:45:17) Intro and Outro Musicespecially written and recorded for the Thoth-Hermes Podcast by Chris Roberts

ONLY SHORT INTROS FOR THIS AND THE COMING TWO EPISODES Welcome back to Mark Stavish, the Director of the Institute for Hermetic Studies, where Rudolf and he discuss the not always easay way how to enter the world of the Western Tradition. This starts by how you want to name what you are looking for. Esotericism? Spirituality? Occultism? Or something else? But this is only the start, of course. Has it become easier in the Internet age to find your path, the right approach to it, or more difficult? What are the chances, what are the traps? These and many other questions lead to the clear conclusion: you will need discipline, whatever your approach or your path is going to be. If this now sounds to you like an episode for the beginner, then you might be wrong. It is certainly is thought to help the searcher, but with Mark's huge knowledge and personal experience also the seasoned esotericist will find points to think about, to discuss, to develop. Books by Mark Stavish Link to The Institute for Hermetic Studies The Philosophers of Nature Website Books by Roberto Assagioli (mentioned by Mark Stavish in the interview) Books by Piero Ferruci (mentioned by Mark Stavish in the interview) Music played in this episode 1) BLURRED - Kiasmos “In the vast ocean of nirvana every microsecond a universe pops up as so one fades away, it's omnifying how this creation & destruction plays in such a harmony.” (Track starts at 6:22) 2) TIME AND SPACE - The Cinematic Orchestra "One swing set, well worn but structurally sound, seeks new home. Make memories with your kid or kids so that someday he or she or they will look into the backyard and feel the ache of sentimentality as desperately as I did this afternoon. It's all fragile and fleeting, dear reader, but with this swing set, your child(ren) will be introduced to the ups and downs of human life gently and safely, and may also learn the most important lesson of all: No matter how hard you kick, no matter how high you get, you can't go all the way around.” (Track starts at 53:05) 3) TRANSMISSION 94 - Bonobo "There were no witnesses to what was about to happen. 'Happen' didn't yet exist. Reality was timeless. Space also didn't exist. The distance between two points was immeasurable. The points themselves could be anywhere, hovering and bouncing. Infinity tangled into itself. There was no here and now. Only Being.” (Track starts at 1:42:12) Intro and Outro Musicespecially written and recorded for the Thoth-Hermes Podcast by Chris Roberts

In this practical guide, Mark Stavish details the spiritual lessons and rituals of Freemasonry as a step-by-step path of spiritual development and self-improvement for both Masons and non-Masons, men and women, alike. He explores the history and meaning of Freemasonry and its symbols--from its origins in the Temple of Solomon to the Medieval craft guilds to the Renaissance--and explains how the Craft promotes personal growth through the symbolic building of self and an inner Temple of Wisdom in much the same way that Masonry's rituals symbolize the building of Solomon's Temple in accordance with the mystical architectural instructions of Hiram. Drawing on esoteric doctrines, including the Qabala, alchemy, sacred geometry, John Dee's angelic magic, and the secrets of the Gothic cathedral builders, each chapter addresses an area of the Masonic experience, paralleling them with experiences each of us finds in our own lives. The author provides simple practices to help internalize and personalize the lessons presented, including dreamwork, journaling, meditation, prayer, and understanding sacred architecture. The author also examines the crafting and use of the spiritual and symbolic tools of Freemasonry, such as the trestle or tracing board and the Chamber of Reflection. Providing the tools to make the Craft an initiatic experience of self-improvement, the author shows that, ultimately, the Masonic experience is the human quest for self-realization and self-expression, so that we each may find our place in the Temple of Wisdom. We speak with esotericist, author and director of studies for the Institute for Hermetic Studies, Mark Stavish, about alchemy and spagyrics, always keeping the end goal in mind, the purpose and the future of esotericism, the importance of group work, and how to build an effective group. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/plantcunning/message Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/plantcunning/support
My guest in this episode does not need a lot of introduction. Mark Stavish is the Director of Studies for the Institute for Hermetic Studies and has more than 25 years of experience in comparative religion, philosophy, psychology, mysticism and of course Traditional Western Esotericism. His books are internationally well-known and equally appreciated among students and teachers of the occult. Mark Stavish started the Institute for Hermetic Studies out of the idea of a local study group back in 1997. From there it grew steadily and soon offered not only seminars and workshops to which people were willing to drive long hours but also published study guides in readable forms that originated in recordings of some of the seminars and workshops. The Institute provides a complete overview of the essential ideas and practices of Western Esotericism. As promised in the episode, by clicking either on the above image or here, you will access the registration for that free 6-hour course on basics of the Western Esotericism. Our main focus during this interview will be asking a lot of probably uncomfortable questions in the realm of Western Esotericism and trying to find some answers. One of these questions will touch the rather sensitive topic of why we start learning and practicing esotericism in the first place, the definition of esotericism in general and what being an adept truly means. We will look at the role of groups in magic in their positive and less positive aspects as well as at the necessity of hierarchies in the learning/teaching process mirroring some qualities in nature. The question if contemporary esotericism is sustainable or not is to be answered rather quickly but the solution to this problem is subject to an extensive part of our conversation but I don't want to give away too much here as it is an issue that needs to be discussed a lot more in depth these days and I consider Mark's input as a very valuable one in fact. Just a hint, it has to do something with Yesod and the world of imagination. Mark will share with us his upcoming projects concerning the Institute for Hermetic Studies, one of his recently re-released books and the latest translations of his well-known work ‘Egregores – The Occult Entities that Watch over Human Destiny' and also give some excellent recommendations for research such as Jeffrey Mishlove's ‘The PK Man' and George P. Hansen's ‘The Trickster and the Paranormal'. Mark's most recent book, "Egregores", published by Inner Traditions to the left, and the brand-new German translation . Those are the two books that Mark mentioned and recommended in the interview. Music played in this episode When a rather heavy thunderstorm came up during the recording of this show (I was fortunately able to edit those noises out), Mark was joking about the planet influences. Well, we recorded this on a Tuesday, and I released this episode on a Sunday. So the choice of music was heavily influenced by the corresponding planets of Tuesday and Sunday... 1) GUSTAV HOLST - MARS from "The Planets" (Track starts at 6:47) 2) ERIK SATIE - AIR DE L'ORDRE from "Sonneries pour la Rose-Croix" Satie wrote a series of piano pieces for the "Ordre de la Rose-Croix", founded and run by Josephin Peladan in the early 1890s. Very austere pieces... (Track starts at 55:55) 3) SUN CIRCLE to celebrate the release day Sunday, a sunny piece inspired by North American native sounds (Track starts at 1:31:06)

We welcome Mark Stavish, prolific author and director of the Hermetic institute. Mark was kind enough to join us to discuss the life and work of his friend Joseph Lisiewski, the well known enigmatic Pennsylvanian magician. A character who has fascinated me throughout my life. We talk about his life through the prism of Alchemy and the dreaded work of the notorious Grimoires, for which he is perhaps most well known. A link to Mark's book can be found here: https://www.amazon.com/Magical-World-Dr-Joseph-Lisiewski/dp/1548256218/ref=sr_1_1?dchild=1&keywords=the+magical+world+of+Joseph+lisiewski&sr=8-1 The Institute for Hermetic Studies is a non-profit organisation offering a range of courses and ongoing support for individuals and groups studying hermeticism, looking to further their knowledge in these matters. The website can be found here: http://www.hermeticinstitute.org I can recommend their courses for anyone, and Mark's books are second to none. One of most important but little known concepts of Western occultism is that of the egregore, an autonomous psychic entity created by a collective group mind. An egregore is sustained by belief, ritual, and sacrifice and relies upon the devotion of a group of people, from a small coven to an entire nation, for its existence. An egregore that receives enough sustenance can take on a life of its own, becoming an independent deity with powers its believers can use to further their own spiritual advancement and material desires. Presenting the first book devoted to the study of egregores, Mark Stavish examines the history of egregores from ancient times to present day, with detailed and documented examples, and explores how they are created, sustained, directed, and destroyed. He explains how egregores were well known in the classical period of ancient Greece and Rome, when they were consciously called into being to watch over city states. He explores the egregore concept as it was understood in various Western Mystery traditions, including the Corpus Hermeticum, and offers further examples from Tibetan Buddhism, Islam, modern esoteric orders such as the Order of the Golden Dawn and Rosicrucianism, the writings of H. P. Lovecraft and Kenneth Grant, and the followers of Julius Evola and Aleister Crowley. The author discusses how, even as the fundamental principles of the egregore were forgotten, egregores continue to be formed, sometimes by accident. Alchemy – the supposed ancient art of turning everyday objects into gold – is widely believed to be obsolete. Interestingly, however, every bit of this notion is wrong. First of all, as it turns out, alchemy is still being practised today and, according to one of our guests, is doing better than ever. And second of all, it apparently was never actually an art of the physical transmutation of objects, but a very profound blend of philosophy, chemistry, physics and religion. Mark Stavish of NEPA, author and expert on western spiritual traditions and comparative religions, and Director of Studies for the Institute of Hermetic Studies, speaking about the Christmas tradition of the krampus: its history and revival in recent years and presence in Europe and the U.S., including in Pennsylvania.
Mark Stavish, author of Egregores: The Occult Entities That Watch Over Human Destiny, is our guest in podcast episode 194. Mark Stavish, the Director of Studies for the Institute for Hermetic Studies and a life-long student of esotericism with over 35 years of experience in comparative religion, philosophy, psychology, and mysticism with emphasis on Western spiritual traditions. He has authored more than 26 books including The Path of Alchemy and Kabbalah for Health and Wellness. Stavish is also the author of the blog VOXHERMES at https://voxhermes.wordpress.com/. In this wide-ranging and extended interview, Mark Stavish and I discuss his recent book, Egregores, and a myriad of related subjects including eastern religion, the relationship between divinity, deity, and humanity, the modern political landscape and the interface with esoteric belief systems, and much more! “One of most important but little-known concepts of Western occultism is that of the egregore, an autonomous psychic entity created by a collective group mind. Revealing how egregores form the foundation of nearly all human interactions, the author shows how egregores have moved into popular culture and media--underscoring the importance of intense selectivity in the information we accept and the ways we perceive the world and our place in it.” Mark Stavish's book Egregores is well-researched, very interesting, and thought-provoking. For all those interested in esotericism, I would consider it a must-read. I found it to be quite timely as well considering his approach juxtaposed with current events. While I did not agree with the premise completely in regards to whether deity is a subset of humanity, Stavish's book would certainly be a worthwhile addition to any occult library and as far as I know, it is the only serious treatment of the subject that I've read. I appreciated the opportunity to discuss it with Mr. Stavish at length during this interview. Just as an aside, it was not as easy as you might imagine to bring you this interview. We must have rescheduled more than half a dozen times for various reasons. Then on the day of the recording, my co-host Rudolf was unable to attend. Immediately after finishing the recording, my computer crashed. But we have persevered to provide you with an extended and quite excellent interview. Enjoy! His articles have appeared in academic, specialty, and mass market publications specializing in spiritual studies, making Mark one of the leading authorities in Hermeticism today. --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app
https://www.patreon.com/conspirinormal Recorded September 18th, 2018 We welcome new guest Mark Stavish of the Institute of Hermetic Studies to discuss his new book: "Egregores: The Occult Entities That Watch Over Human Destiny" This was a learning experience for us as we knew next to nothing about the topic. We talk about what an Egregore is, how they manifest, and they can influence our reality. We also look into the idea of Tulpas and how they are connected to the Egregore concept and how the power of positivity can influence magickal workings.
