In this episode, I'm joined by the prolific Tobias Churton—author, scholar, and one of the most insightful voices on Western esotericism and early Christianity. We open with his recent book The Books of Enoch Revealed, and from there, the conversation unfolds across a wide and fascinating terrain.Tobias breaks down the Enochic texts and their influence on Jewish mysticism, apocalyptic religion, and the foundations of early Christianity. We explore how the figure of Enoch shaped beliefs around sin, salvation, and the afterlife, and how Jesus' ministry can be reinterpreted through this powerful lens.In the Plus show, Tobias and I dive deeper into the metaphysical heart of the Enochian tradition, focusing on the figure of Metatron—God's scribe, “Little Yahweh,” and the transformed identity of Enoch himself. We explore the radical implications of Metatron's throne in heaven, his relationship to the “Son of Man” archetype, and how this connects to early perceptions of Jesus as a divine intermediary or even a returned Enoch.Tobias also expands on the cross-cultural evolution of heaven as both a theological concept and a political one. We touch on his forthcoming book, which maps the idea of heaven across history, geography, and belief systems—from the ziggurats of Mesopotamia to mystical ascent in Kabbalah and Islamic cosmology. This episode is rich in historical insight, theological nuance, and unapologetic critique. Tobias brings the weight of scholarship, but also the fire of someone deeply passionate about preserving the sacred, the strange, and the profound. Welcome to Episode 1 of The Pansophers' Podcast! Today, Rudolf talks with esteemed UK author and academic, Tobias Churton. In a wide-ranging conversation, the men discuss the Search for Self as well as Wisdom in the context of history. Particular focus is brought to aspects of Freemasonic and Rosicrucian history. Tobias defines his experience of “Pansophia”- the mind of God, Wisdom, and the interrelatedness of knowledge. This conversation unfolds through the knowledge that “this life is only a beginning”, the distractions of political ideology and institutional religion; and the Rosicrucian paradox of being not of this World yet engaged and seed-bearing within it. We explore a move towards freedom of “Science” as a democratic access to “Knowledge,” and “Art” as “Magic”. Tobias outlines a vision that sees dialogues and colloquium find energy over our monologue-culture, and a move from over-specialization of knowledge into a more dynamic, holistic approach to study. In passing, he notes the “cosmic” view most experts attribute to their knowledge, yet without the benefit of cross-disciplinary application. In addition to explaining the origins of alchemy, Tobias discusses two of the earliest alchemists, Zosimos of Panopolis and Mary the Prophetess, and the art's connection to Gnosticism, Judaism, and hermeticism, and how exploring the origins of alchemy challenges our understanding of the art. On Thursday November 21st. 2019 the Hermetic Hour with host Poke Runyon will review Tobias Churton's "Aleister Crowley in India." This is another in a series of books by Churton covering portions of Crowley's life and work, We have already reviewed his "The Beast in Berlin" and will certainly get to last year's "Aleister Crowley in America," but Crowley's India adventures should probably have been first in the series. I personally found this book to be fascinating. In its pages I rediscovered Crowley and relived the excitement of his early magical experiences along with big-game hunting and mountain climbing adventures. Churton had access to many records and archives not available to previous writers. We have a more Crowley-favorable version of the infamous Kangchenjunga tragedy than previously reported. The primary theme of this book is magical yoga or yoga for magick. We start with Crowley and Bennett in Ceylon studying Theravada Buddhism together and then on to Crowley's discovering and adapting the Gnostic tantric system of Sabhapaty Swami. So if you'd like to return to the thrilling days of yesteryear, then join us and sit down, shut-up and get-out with Aleister Crowley.

Three schools later he won an exhibition to Brasenose College, Oxford, where he studied Theology. Compelled to exchange a vocation to the priesthood for the lowlier prospect of a career in television, he first came to public notice with the 1987 Channel 4 production, GNOSTICS. The 4-part, drama-documentary went out at peak time on Saturday nights. It won the New York TV Festival Gold Award for best religious series. Churton's Channel 4/Weidenfeld & Nicolson book accompanying the series was a best seller. Long before Dan Brown scored a hit with The Da Vinci Code, Tobias Churton introduced a popular audience to the authentic world of esoteric mysteries. In the words of Dutch scholar, Gilles Quispel, the TV series would “change the minds of millions”. Churton presented the facts, not the fantasy. Swedish theologian Jan-Arvid Hellström hailed Churton as a “religious genius” while Amsterdam bibliophile and industrialist Joost Ritman enthusiastically greeted the appearance of a new “writing star”. The success of The Gnostics allowed Tobias to concentrate his energies on his first love: writing. After years of voluminous reading, mystical experience and creative endeavour, Churton had much to express. Having completed his twenty-fifth book commission, Tobias Churton is today internationally recognized for his insightful books on esoteric, spiritual history, Art and philosophy. On Thursday December 6th, 2018, the Hermetic Hour with host Poke Runyon will review and discuss “The Spiritual Meaning of the Sixties” (2018) by Tobias Churton. This is a 653 page door-stopper of a book subtitled: “the Magic, Myths & Music of the Decade that Changed the World,” And it certainly lives up to its subtitle. Even though Churton's previous books have been in the mystical, occult genre, this one should break into the mainstream and be read by every thoughtful reader interested in the present spiritual, philosophical and political divisions in what we call Western Civilization. Using the Music, films, television, and popular fads of the period as his mirror of reflection he leads us through the decade. The cultural impact of the Beatles, and rock music, the sexual revolution, psychedelics, the Bomb, the Vietnam War, Civil Rights, and the rise of feminism are all dealt with in turn. And the inability of established religion to cope with the spiritual challenges of the time is considered. The author was a child in England and Australia during the period and gives us a remarkable picture of the era from a growing child's perspective. My one criticism of the book stems from Churton's memory picture. I was a teenager in 1950s America. I recall that repressive era which preceded the social liberation of the sixties. I think Churton should have added “The Man in the Gray Flannel Suit.” (1956) to his list of media catalysts. So if you want to look back at the days of Flower-Power and Strawberry Fields Forever, turn-on, tune-in and give a listen.
Perhaps the most notorious esoteric secret society of all time, the Rosicrucians still inspire enormous amounts of mystery and interest to this day. To set all of this straight is the scholar of Western Esotericism and the author of many books which are important to our interests here at WMiT?- the Great Tobias Churton!

will review the 2014 book by Tobias Churton "Aleister Crowley The Beast in Berlin". This is apparently an expansion and compilation of outcuts from the author's biography of Crowley and should perhaps be considered an appendix to that work. Unless you are an ardent Crowley aficionado it is a hard read. The book is primarily made up of excerpts from A.C.'s. diaries and his correspondence mostly during his 1930s Berlin sojourn as a struggling artist in the decadent twilight days of the Weimar Republic. Along with a running account of the Beast's metaphysical politics, sexual magick and artistic endeavors, Churton manages to give us an in-depth look at the decadent sub-culture of the Weimar Berliners and an appreciation of Crowley's talents as an artist. So if you'd like to accompany the Beast to the Cabaret, tune in and enjoy the show.
My guest today is someone who has already been on the show three times, author, scholar and widely known authority on Gnostic philosophy, Tobias Churton. This time, we have the great pleasure to talk about his latest book which was published by Inner Traditions in January 2021, ‘The Lost Pillars of Enoch – When Science & Religion Were One' which is surprisingly enough not about Enochian Magic and/or John Dee at all. We'll be having a wonderful conversation about the biblical Genesis story of the flood and how Jewish historian Flavius Josephus in his work ‘The Antiquities of the Jews' tried to pin down an urban version of the Septuaginta. According to him the children of Seth inherited wisdom and prophecy of Adam such as the idea for God to destroy the world by water or fire. In order to preserve the knowledge it was inscribed on two pillars, one of brick and one of stone. The second one was said to have survived the Great Flood and thought to be found in ‘Syria' which was a mistake in the translation process as it should have meant some entirely different location. Tobias' book explores in its first part the big question of how the remaining pillar could be located. Of course, we will dive deeply into the explorations of Enoch's different identities and try to unpack at least a bit how they are connected to the Pillars and Hermes Trismegistos from Hermetic sources. So essentially our journey will lead us to the origins of Hermeticism itself. Tobias' latest book "The Lost Pillars of Enoch" is at the centre of our attention in this episode. It can be ordered here! One of the main ideas of Tobias presented in his work is in general how the knowledge about the universe and religion must have been identical in some very early antediluvian times. However, Tobias will be elaborating on apocalyptic topics as well such as inner vs. outer apocalypse, individual vs. collective transformational processes and the role of Jesus in this whole picture. The history of the Pillars also requires the interested audience to follow a red line which is also the main promise of esotericism in general, the idea that man is a fallen being possessing only the shattered mirror of the knowledge that it once had in its hands and that the requirement is to experience a vision of the original in order to reassemble the pieces for which the Pillars of Enoch provide an emblem of vision of the primal unity between God and Man. The figure of Aleister Crowley can't be missing in an interview with Tobias as he has written numerous books on The Great Beast, the next one coming out in January 2022 describing Crowley's years from 1932 to 1947 in Britain during which time he wasn't able to obtain a visa to leave the country and was confined to it until his death. Tobias has another book on Crowley in work – he says it's going to be the last one on him – on his years in Paris coming out in 6-8 months and we'll talk about another one he's just about to start concerning the origins of alchemy which I'm pretty sure will be a highly interesting topic for many of you. Music played in this episode Today's music is more from the world of classical music, but related to Western Esotericism or Mysticism JEAN LANGLAIS was a French organist and composer whose lifesppan covered most of the 20th century. Most of his work is religiously inspired, but often in a very mystical, almost "gothic", gnostic way. GEORGES I. GURDJEFF played the music that came to his mind on a harmonium, but as he was not able to write it down, Thomas de Harmann, rather well known composer of the time, student and friend of Gurdjeff (and later also husband of his private secretary) did that for him. We hear one of Gurdjeff's pieces from "An Oriental Suite" in a version for large orchestra. ERIK SATIE is also French,
Tobias Churton is a British scholar of Rosicrucianism, Freemasonry, Gnosticism, and other esoteric movements. He is lecturer at Exeter University, and author of Gnostic Philosophy, The Magus of Freemasonry, and Freemasonry and numerous other works on esotericism. He joins us to discuss his many books on Aleister Crowley.
On Thursday January 28th, 2016 the Hermetic Hour with host Poke Runyon will present a discussion on the Biblical personages Simon Magus and John the Baptist. We will discuss their association, their influence on the Gnostic movement and the rise of Christianity. We will have Frater Solomon as a guest commentator. Sources will be the works of Tobias Churton "Gnostic Mysteries of Sex" and "Mysteries of John the Baptist" also G.R.S. Mead's "Simon Magus" and "The Book of Enoch" which influenced Gnostic cosmology and the Mandanean books attributed to John the Baptizer. So if you want to be demystified about the Gnosis, tune in and we'll part the veil.
We explore Hermetic Philosophy and how it bestowed early humanity with a unified science-religion. It begins with understanding the ancient Egyptian “Sophia of the Ages.” Then it’s a journey with this primordial Gnosis first nurtured by the figures of Enoch and Hermes, smuggled across time by the classical Gnostics and other alchemists, and injected into modernity by luminaries like Giordano Bruno, John Dee, William Blake, and others. On Thursday January 7th,2021 the Hermetic Hour with host Poke Runyon will review "The Lost Pillars of Enoch" by Tobias Churton (2021)This is an important book on one of the most important themes underlying the Western Esoteric Tradition: the legendary secret wisdom of the antediluvian civilization from before the Biblical flood that inspired later astrologers, alchemists, magicians, Kabbalists, Freemasons and Rosicrucians from the first century to the present. Beginning with Enoch's two pillars as recalled in Josephus, Churton follows the Ancient Wisdom theme through through Hermetic, and alchemical writings and on into the beginnings of Masonry. He cites the remarkable account of Scottish explorer James Bruce who brought the first copies of the Book of Enoch out of Ethiopia and reveals that Issac Newton was an alchemist and a Freemason. He carries his theme of ancient wisdom on through Blavatsky to Crowley, giving us a philosophical history of the Western Esoteric Tradition. This book is highly recommended.
George Noory and author Tobias Churton explore his research into the lost pillars of Enoch, a biblical character assigned to protect sacred knowledge, and how religion may be used to hide the rediscovery of the pillars to prevent the enlightenment of the world. The search for the real historical person known as John the Baptist and the traditions that began with him Few Freemasons today understand why the most significant date in the Masonic calendar is June 24th--the Feast of the Birth of St. John the Baptist and the traditional date for appointing Grand Masters. Nor do many of them know that Masons used to be known as “St. John's Men” or that John the Baptist was fundamental to the original Masonic philosophy of personal transformation. Starting with the mystery of John in Freemasonry, Tobias Churton searches out the historical Baptist through the gospels and ancient histories, unearthing the real story behind the figure lauded by Jesus's words “no greater man was ever born of woman.” He investigates John's links with the Essenes and the Gnostics, links that flourish to this day. Exposing how the apostle Paul challenged John's following, twisting his message and creating the image of John as “merely” a herald of Jesus, the author shows how Paul may have been behind the executions of both John and Jesus and reveals a precise date for the crucifixion and the astonishing meaning of the phrase “the third day.” He examines the significance of John's severed head to holy knights, such as the Knights Templar, and of Leonardo's famous painting of John. Churton also explains connections between John, the summer solstice, fertility rites, and ancient Jewish harvest festivals. Revealing John as a courageous, revolutionary figure as vital to the origins of Christianity as his cousin Jesus himself, Churton shows how John and Jesus, as equal partners, launched a covert spiritual operation to overcome corruption in the Temple of Jerusalem, re-initiate Israel, and resurrect Creation.

Churton’s Channel 4/Weidenfeld & Nicolson book accompanying the series was a best seller. In the words of Dutch scholar, Gilles Quispel, the TV series would “change the minds of millions”. Churton presented the facts, not the fantasy. Night-Light welcomesTobias Churton to share with us his book, Alister Crowley in India:The Secret Influence of Eastern Mysticism on Magic and the Occult. For those of you who have only heard the rumors about Alister Crowley it's about time that some of the facts about him had light shown upon them. This book : • Shares excerpts from Crowley's unpublished diaries and details his travels in India, Burma, and Sri Lanka from 1901 to 1906 • Reveals how Crowley incorporated what he learned in India--jnana yoga, Vedantist, Tantric, and Buddhist philosophy--into his own school of Magick • Explores the world of Theosophy, yogis, Hindu traditions, and the first Buddhist sangha to the West as well as the first pioneering expeditions to K2 and Kangchenjunga in 1901 and 1905 Early in life, Aleister Crowley's dissociation from fundamentalist Christianity led him toward esoteric and magical spirituality. In 1901, he made the first of three voyages to the Indian subcontinent, searching for deeper knowledge and experience. His religious and magical system, Thelema, shows clear influence of his thorough experimental absorption in Indian mystical practices.

HP Blavatsky, Aleister Crowley, and other esoteric exemplars were instrumental in infusing eastern mysticism into western culture – in ways that are still overlooked today. Beyond a deep dive in connecting these karmic dots, we find the parallels between Gnosticism and Buddhism/Hinduism. And ultimately discover how a reintegration of eastern and western thought can help the fragmented psyche of our current society. Astral Guest – Tobias Churton, author of Aleister Crowley in India.

What happened in the early 1600s to explain the R+C furor? What was the manifestos, what did they say, who was behind them & what did they lead to? World leading scholar on Esoterica, Tobias Churton, sets the record straight so we can understand this important backdrop to the Shakespeare-Oak Island riddle. He accounts for everything Rosicrucian (incl Tubingen circle, Paracelsus, J. Dee, J.V. Andrea, T. Hess, F. Bacon, King James, etc) and also lets us know his experience at Oxford University, the Exeter program for Esoteric studies, & some of his previous work... and he relates research into sexual aspects of ancient Gnostic teachings. :: :: :: :: All programs are gratis & listener funded. This episode is the second of three "interview-only" episodes published this month. That means, just the interview with just a short intro by Rudolf, no news, no reviews. This week Rudolf welcomes back a guest who a year ago was very warmly received by all of you: Tobias Churton, British author and historian, musician and playwright is with us again. This time we talk mainly about his latest book "The Spiritual Meaning of the Sixties", but when Rudolf and Tobias (both born in 1960) start talking about those years, you can be sure that they soon end up talking about many other issues regarding Occultism, Magic, Music and times in general. All of this with Tobias' usual British wit and humour! A world authority on Gnostic spirituality, TOBIAS CHURTON is Britain’s leading scholar in the field of Western Esotericism. Holding a Masters degree in Theology from Brasenose College, Oxford, he was appointed Honorary Fellow and Faculty Lecturer in Western Esotericism at Exeter University in 2005. In Episode 55 of the Weird Tales Radio Show we have the second and concluding part of our interview with Tobias Churton about his latest book “The Spiritual Meaning of the Sixties - the Magic, Myth & Music of the Decade That Changed the World”. This week we discuss Aleister Crowley, the man whose thinking most closely defined the decade but who was written out of history - apart from an appearance on the cover of "Sergeant Pepper"
We uncover the spiritual meaning that fueled the artistic, political, and social revolutions of the 1960s. This includes investigating the Gnostic, Hermetic, and Occult influences of that decade. From John Lennon’s understanding of Gnosticism to Pink Floyd’s marketing of Gnosis, we leave no acid-soaked unturned. Ultimately, we find out what went wrong with the Sixties, at the same time distilling insights that might rejuvenate our colorless times.
Today on everyone's favorite podcast for conspiracy, the paranormal, & the all around fringe: Alright Higherside Chatters, it should be no surprise to us that eccentric, exceptional characters are routinely misunderstood by the commoners- and that those who buck the system, let the air out of authority, or push themselves to the outer limits of understanding reality are typically going to be treated unkindly by state sponsored history books. Add “the pioneering of an esoteric movement” to this mix and you can be pretty damn sure if it. Well folks, as we've explored the never ending depths of this weird world: Conspiracies, mysteries & the occult...we've heard many guests make provocative statements and bold claims about the colorful character we call Aliester Crowley, but the Great Beast was much more than just an enigmatic magic man...he was an artist, a poet, likely an intelligence asset, a mountaineer even, and an adventurer in the truest sense of the word and we would be wise to better understand and fold in these other aspects of his biography- to form a more nuanced opinion that doesn't rely on a legacy tarnished by paranoia and ignorance. And we could not do such a thing without the dedication and contributions of today's guest Tobias Churton. An eccentric and exceptional character in his own right, Tobias is known as one of Britans leading scholars when it comes to Western Esoterisism. A bonafide world authority on Gnostic spirituality, Rosicrucianism, Freemasonry, and other esoteric movements Holding a Masters degree in Theology, Tobias is also a filmmaker, poet, composer, and the author of many books, including: The Gnostics The Missing Family of Jesus: An Inconvenient Truth - How the Church Erased Jesus's Brothers and Sisters from History The Invisible History of the Rosicrucians: The World's Most Mysterious Secret Society Occult Paris The well respected and often considered gold standard in Crowley biographies, The Beast In Berlin and now just a few short months after his latest release: Aleister Crowley in America: Art, Espionage, and Sex Magick in the New World...Tobias joins us to break down this lesser known chapter in the life of the Great Beast himself.
