Welcome to Season 10 of the Hoffman Podcast! We're glad to be back with you and a new season of conversations. Marissa and Raz Ingrasci Marissa Ingrasci and Raz Ingrasci, Hoffman Process teachers, join Drew for this deep dive into the many layers of spiritual lineage running through the Process, and their own journeys to becoming Process teachers. There's also a familial lineage, as Marissa is Raz's daughter. Raz and Marissa came to teach the Hoffman Process through the lens of theatre. For Raz, this meant studying classic Greek theater; for Marissa, it meant studying and living the art of acting. In this conversation, they share fascinating ways theatre, in its many forms, illuminates the Process's inner workings. Within the Hoffman Institute and the Process are layers of spiritual lineage. The spiritual lineage of teaching the Process is passed down as each new teacher takes their seat, teacher to teacher. Bob Hoffman passed the Process lineage down to Raz and Liza, Hoffman's CEO and President and Raz's wife when they established the Institute in the United States. Over recent years, Raz and Liza have been working to ensure the lineage continues. Raz and Marissa share a deeper understanding of the spiritual dimension in the design of the Hoffman Process. Marissa highlights the nature of the Hero's Journey and how the week of the Process is remarkably similar. Raz, who has studied multiple Eastern spiritual traditions, such as Buddhism and Hinduism, highlights how Bob Hoffman brought the Process into being in the West. We don't have to travel to distant lands to benefit from this spiritual lineage of the Hoffman Process. We hope you enjoy this deep, delightful conversation. More about Marissa Ingrasci: Marissa Ingrasci holds a B.A. from Emerson College. She received her coaching training through the ICF-approved, Academy of Leadership Coaching and is also a certified NLP (Neurolinguistic Programming) coach. Marissa did the Hoffman Process when she was 23 years old. Marissa says, “The Hoffman Process changed my relationship with me, quieting critical voices and allowing me greater access to my inner knowing and wisdom. In short – it gave me freedom! It's inspiring and a joy to walk alongside and support others doing this work.” More episodes with Marissa: •   Ready to Step Into the Mystery   More about Raz Ingrasci: Marissa, Raz, and Liza Ingrasci Raz Ingrasci graduated from UC Berkeley and has been an executive, consultant, and facilitator within the Human Potential Movement since 1972. He is also a Hoffman teacher and founded the Hoffman Institute Foundation in 1998. Raz took the Process in July 1989. From that experience, he had three major takeaways: “I knew my marriage would last; I could be a great dad to my young children, and I'd found work worthy of devoting my life to.” “The Hoffman Process is the most highly effective method for people to heal, discover their true nature, and live a more free, open, loving, and spontaneous life,” Raz shares. His passion for teaching the Hoffman Process is both professional and personal; it brings him into the depths of human experience where he learns at least as much as he teaches. Raz lives in the San Francisco Bay Area with his wife of over 40 years, Liza. More episodes with Raz: •   Husband, Father, Son •   Hoffman and the Enneagram with Raz and Ward Ashman   As mentioned in this episode: Bob Hoffman, founder of the Hoffman Process Theatre and Performing Arts Greek Theatre •   Greek Mythology •   Greek Tragedy Spiritual Modalities: •   Tibetan Buddhism •   Hinduism Joseph Campbell's and the Hero's Journey Quote shared by Raz: “Even the truth, when believed, is a lie. You must experience the truth, not believe it.” Werner Erhard  (Referring to the spiritual truth which can only be known through experience, not through belief.) Thank you. This is Renegade Files Episode 73, The Occult Military: Remote Viewing and Psychic Warfare. The Human Potential Movement, New Age Predictions, and Psychic abilities beyond the commonly recognized 5 senses, combined to offer promises of finding the invisible, of visiting locations through the mind, and affecting others by focused thought. These ideas were simply too appealing for the structures of military intelligence and covert warfare, to ignore. And so, secret programs were launched to explore the military potential of these occult, new age practices. Could the military train people to perform astral projection and spy on their enemies? Could a soldier imagine a foreign adversary having a heart attack, and thus make it so? Or was it possible for the navy to build a device that would allow a battleship to jump ahead 30-seconds in time, and avoid an unavoidable torpedo strike? All of these questions were taken quite seriously, and exhaustively explored by a few previously classified projects.  These are not conspiracy theories; these are real military and intelligence agency projects that have been declassified and brought to light by whistleblowers, and today on Renegade Files, we will dive deep into these discoveries. And it's not just meditating to mentally spy on a Soviet Map-Room. This episode leads us into remote viewing of distant planets, remote extraterrestrial bases on the Moon, Aliens among us, and an attack on civilians by a UFO blasting death beams in the frozen tundra. This episode gets beyond weird and by the end, you may never think of the dark-ops military quite the same again.  So join me right now and together we will explore the hidden worlds of The Occult Military: Remote Viewing and Psychic Warfare. Help Crowdfund RF on Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/renegadefiles  Get cool RF Merch https://www.bonfire.com/store/renegade-files/  Visit and Share the Website http://therenegadefiles.com  Dig us on YouTube https://www.youtube.com/@renegadefiles   Follow RF on Instagram https://www.instagram.com/renegadefiles/   If you like the show, please leave us a 5 star review on Apple Podcasts or Spotify if you think we deserve it. The terms spiritual abuse have, thus far, only been used to describe how Christian leaders abuse church members. But spiritual abuse runs far deeper and wider than can be described by any one religion. Spiritual abuse is abuse of the human spirit. While it's true that your spirit--your soul--can't really be damaged, it's also true that you can be split off from any conscious awareness of your spirit--and that's what spiritual abuse does. It is possible to live a life complete bereft of any conscious awareness of one's own spirit. That's what spiritual abuse can do. It can happen in any religion, in the spiritual but not religious population, in New Age followers, in New Thought followers, in the Human Potential Movement, and in our homes, in our schools and in our workplaces. Anywhere there is spirit there can be abuse of that spirit. But it can also be healed. Let's talk about it--it's time.

In this episode, I speak with Dave about his journey to becoming the first podcaster in the field of psychology and his prolific career publishing over a 1,000 interviews. Dave explained that he had learned about podcasting very early on and it fit with his interest in radio, which, as a teenager, he got involved with amateur radio, had taken the FCC exams, and built his own components. This lead him to go to college to study electrical engineering, but he quickly learned that his high school had not prepared him for an engineering major. He said he took a Psychology 101 course, but it was completely focused on behaviorism, which turned him off to the field, and instead got a degree in creative writing. At the end of college, he explained that a friend told him he was studying to become a Rogerian psychologist, which sounded interesting, and Dave had always enjoyed helping people with their problems, so he took an abnormal Psychology class, and then went to graduate school for a doctorate in psychology. Dave discussed how his graduate school was focused on psychoanalytic theory, which he didn't find to be a good fit for him, so he gravitated more towards Humanistic Psychology. He discussed running encounter groups and we discussed the Human Potential Movement in the 60s and how he and others were seeking alternative perspectives. He explained that he had published articles in the Human Behavior journal and after learning about podcasting, thought that interviewing his fellow professors at Sonoma. State University where he met, which was Humanistically focused, would be a great way to begin his program Shrink Rap Radio and Wise Counsel. We discussed that during the 80s, when personal computers were becoming more popular, he became interested in the tech and business world, and began doing market research focus groups, and used online focus groups in the early days of the internet. He continued this work while he taught, had a psychotherapy practice and all of these skills assisted him in his podcast interviews. He explained that he challenged himself to be open to a wide variety of perspective, interviewing a broad range of clinicians and non-clinicians. Dave lastly discussed his interest in Positive Psychology and how he saw it as an outgrowth of Humanistic psychotherapy, and how Positive Psychology's coaching aspects have been adopted in the business world. David Van Nuys, Ph.D. is past-chair and professor emeritus in Psychology at Sonoma State University, a department with an international reputation for humanistic, existential, and transpersonal psychology. He also taught at the University of Montana, the University of Michigan, and the University of New Hampshire. In addition, David runs a market research business, e-FocusGroups, which has served a distinguished list of clients, including The New York Times, Apple Computer, IBM, Hewlett Packard, and QuickenLoans, among others. He leads personal growth workshops at various growth centers around the U.S. and abroad. David earned his doctorate in clinical psychology from the University of Michigan and has worked as a licensed psychotherapist in both New Hampshire and California. A frequent public speaker, he has also published in professional journals, popular magazines, and co-authored a book on the infamous Zodiac serial killer. He also produces two popular podcasts: Shrink Rap Radio and Wise Counsel. David is a longtime dreamworker himself and a past IASD presenter and for many years taught a course on Myth, Dream, and Symbol at Sonoma State University. In 2018, he received an award from the American Psychological Association for his pioneering podcast, Shrink Rap Radio. The award was presented at Harvard University by the APA president before a crowd of several hundred educational podcasters. Since 2005, he has conducted around one thousand interviews with movers and shakers around the broad world of psychology (including dreamworkers , dream researchers, and Jungian analysts).

Why did the New York Public Library ban a novel about women's independence? What was the Human Potential Movement? And who was Claire Myers Owens? Today's book is: Rivers of Light: The Life of Claire Myers Owens (Syracuse University Press,, 2019) by Miriam Kalman Friedman, which is a biography of Owens, who grew up in a conservative, middle-class family in Texas, but sought adventure and freedom. At twenty years old, she left home and quickly found a community of like-minded free spirits and intellectuals in New York's Greenwich Village. There Owens wrote novels and short stories, including the controversial novel The Unpredictable Adventure: A Comedy of Woman's Independence, which was banned by the New York Public Library for its “risqué” content. Drawn to ideals of self-actualization and creative freedom, Owens became a key figure in the Human Potential Movement along with founder Abraham Maslow and Aldous Huxley. In her later years, Owens devoted her life to the practice of Zen Buddhism, and published her final book, Zen and the Lady, at the age of eighty-three. Dr. Friedman's rediscovery of Owens brings attention to her little known yet extraordinary life and passionate spirit. Drawing upon autobiographies, letters, journals, and novels, Dr. Friedman chronicles Owens's robust intellect and her tumultuous private life. The transformative impact of the 1960s counterculture on American society was driven by the post-WWII population explosion known as the baby boomer generation. As violence marred the social movements of the ‘60s, the emergence of the Human Potential Movement replaced the need for collective action with self-expression and radical individualism. Propaganda followed suit with lifestyle branding, creating associations between products and individual values. By blurring the line between self and brand identity, hippies were converted into the largest demographic of consumers in history. If you've enjoyed this podcast so far, be sure to leave us a review. In Break On Through, Lucas Richert explores Anti-psychiatry, psychedelics, and radical challenges to psychiatry and the conventional treatment of mental health in the 1970s. In this interview Lucas discusses the issues that run through the sixties and seventies and how they're forming debates about mental health today. "Antipsychiatry," Esalen, psychedelics, and DSM III: Radical challenges to psychiatry and the conventional treatment of mental health in the 1970s. The upheavals of the 1960s gave way to a decade of disruptions in the 1970s, and among the rattled fixtures of American society was mainstream psychiatry. A "Radical Caucus" formed within the psychiatric profession and the "antipsychiatry" movement arose. Critics charged that the mental health establishment was complicit with the military-industrial complex, patients were released from mental institutions, and powerful antipsychotic drugs became available. Meanwhile, practitioners and patients experimented with new approaches to mental health, from primal screaming and the therapeutic use of psychedelics to a new reliance on quantification. In Break on Through, Lucas Richert investigates the radical challenges to psychiatry and to the conventional treatment of mental health that emerged in the 1970s and the lessons they offer for current debates. Drawing on archives and government documents, medical journals, and interviews, and interweaving references to pop (counter)culture into his account, Richert offers fascinating stories of the decade's radical mental health practices. He discusses anti-Vietnam War activism and the new diagnosis of post-traumatic stress disorder given to some veterans; the radical psychiatrists who fought the system (and each other); the entry of New Age-style therapies, including Esalen's Human Potential Movement, into the laissez-faire therapeutic marketplace of the 1970s; the development of DSM III; and the use of LSD, cannabis, and MDMA. Many of these issues have resonance today. Debates over medical marijuana and microdoses of psychedelics echo debates of the 1970s. With rising rates of such disorders as anxiety and depression, practitioners and patients continue to search for therapeutic breakthroughs. Learn more about your ad choices. In this Episode I am joined by John Klyczek, and he shares with us his knowledge of Barbara Marx Hubbard, the new age guru who pushed for transhumanism. We discuss her connections to various groups and think tanks such as the Esalen Institute, psychologist Abraham Maslow's Eupsychian Network as well as her role in things such as the Human Potential Movement. We discuss the Jesuit heretic she took inspiration from who was also involved in a hoax concerning the missing link between animal and man, Klyczek also informs us of Hubbard's beliefs about how we can all reach 'Christ Consciousness' through merging with machines, how the internet and social media are the nervous system of the world spirit and much more. Klyczek also lays the connection between darwinism, malthusianism, eugenics and transhumanism. Ep. 60 (Part 3 of 3) | Michael Murphy, author, co-founder of the world-famous Esalen Institute, and pioneer of the Human Potential Movement starting in the 60s, relates a wealth of intimate experience, knowledge, and wisdom covering his decades of living at the leading edge of transformative practice and the realization of human potential. Mike talks about Esalen's latest research, our current crisis of belief, and the anchoring question that has guided Esalen (and Mike) all along: how best to serve? Mike has watched the developmental process of transformative practices themselves, such as somatics and psychedelics, now circling around after a period of purgation, and talks about current efforts to add research on the mystical and the ecstatic to meditation and mindfulness research in order to better understand what's going on. This podcast is a wonderful mix of tales from the past—including Mike and his wife Dulce's achievements and adventures with Soviet-American citizen diplomacy towards the end of the Cold War—the present, and what's coming up at the Esalen research center now, e.g., asking what is happening on "the other side," and discovering the truth about subtle body phenomena. On a personal note, Mike shares about practicing agnosticism, his respect and admiration for the quality of wonder, and about the magic of reading subtle cues and being increasingly in tune with “the algorithms of his heart.” Friendly, relaxed, and humorous, Mike is one of the world's leading lights on self-transformation. When you look at the world, it can feel like we're in a precarious moment. If you've listened to past episodes, you know we call this the meta-crisis — an era of overlapping and interconnected crises like climate change, polarization, and the rise of decentralized technologies like synthetic biology. It can feel like we're on a path to destroy ourselves. That's why we're talking to Rick Doblin, the founder and executive director of the Multidisciplinary Association for Psychedelic Studies, or MAPS. They're a nonprofit focused on educating and researching the benefits of using psychedelic therapy to address PTSD and promote humane ways of relating worldwide.Doblin's vision is for nothing less than a transformation of society through psychedelic-assisted therapy – not for the drugs themselves, but for their ability to help us react to one another with compassion, appreciate differences, and accept criticism.Given the perma-crisis we face, it's provocative to think about a tool that, when prescribed and used safely, could help us overcome rivalrous dynamics out in the world and on social media. If we rescue our hijacked brains, we can heal from the constant trauma inflation we get online, and shrink the perception gap that splits us into tribes. Both MAPS and Center for Humane Technology want to understand what helps minds heal and be free. We invite you to keep an open mind about a different kind of humane technology as you listen to this episode. Correction: Doblin attributes a quote to Stan Grof about psychedelics helping your ego be “transparent to the transcendent.” In his book Pathways to Bliss, Joseph Campbell wrote, "When a deity serves as a model for you, your life becomes transparent to the transcendent as long as you realize the inspiring power of that deity. This means living not in the name of worldly success and achievement, but rather in the name of the transcendent, letting the energy manifest through you.” Grof was likely paraphrasing Campbell's work and applying it to psychedelics. Additional credits:The episode contains an original musical composition by Jeff Sudakin. This week we're talking about Neuro-Linguistic Programming (NLP), the system of brain reprogramming that will allow you too to have a mind as clean and efficient as a hotel conference room in Miami circa 1986. It'll win you friends, lovers, cure every disease known to man, and evidently let you get away with murder. All without ever really developing a personality. NLP is, essentially, a system of magic, that came out of the Human Potential Movement of the 1970s. Developed by linguist John Grinder and psychology student/cocaine enthusiast Richard Bandler as the result of modeling the techniques used by unusually successful clinical psychologists, NLP has become extremely influential in the world of self-help. In this episode we talk about the basis for NLP and how it's supposed to work. And then we tell a story about how Richard Bandler probably got away with murder.
