4. Citroën H (1962) No, ¡listillos!

The sales statistics for August indicate that “some form of stability” is returning to the new-vehicle market, says WesBank. August delivered the second-best performing sales month for the year (similar to last year), with 47 420 new-vehicle registrations – 14.2% higher than the same month in 2021. “It is interesting to note the correlation in market performance this year against 2021,” says WesBank marketing and communications head Lebogang Gaoaketse. “Last year, August put in the second-best selling month at the time, with March 2021 being the best sales month. Coincidentally, March 2022 sales have also, so far, been this year's best sales month.” If this could be defined as a trend, the market prospects for the remainder of the year could hold further promise, notes WesBank, as August 2021 sales were surpassed by September and November volumes last year. “August sales are also reassuring in the sense that the volume increase comes off a relatively high base,” notes Gaoaketse. “[Also], the interest rate hike in July appears not to have dampened market demand.” While more interest rate increases are inevitable this year, demand in the new-vehicle market continues to grow. “Applications for finance continue to show a growing demand for vehicle replacement, with WesBank's book showing strong double-digit growth, driven by applications for new vehicles,” says Gaoaketse. National Automobile Dealers' Association chairperson Mark Dommisse echoes this sentiment, noting that the appetite for new vehicles in South Africa continues to surprise motor industry pundits and forecasters alike, “as buyers show remarkable resilience in the face of tough economic pressures”. August new-passenger-car sales expanded by 14.6%, to 31 269 units, compared with the same month last year. Bakkie, van and minibus sales were up 13.1%, to 13 281 units, which was a far better performance than the 9 552 units sold in July. These numbers were boosted by the Toyota plant in Durban returning to production in August, following flooding in April. Toyota South Africa Motors (TSAM) notes that it has “started to bounce back” to pre-flood sales figures, posting a total of 11 138 sales for August. The company's latest sales are 4 028 units up compared with July, with August numbers “certainly propped up by the resumption of operations at the Prospecton Plant, albeit still in ramp-up phase”. “The resilience of the Toyota brand in South Africa was put to the test when production ceased for a few months following the devastating floods that caused damage to our plant in Durban,” says TSAM sales and marketing senior VP Leon Theron. “We are truly pleased to have models such as Hilux, Hiace, Fortuner, Corolla Cross and Quest rolling off the production line again. “However, we still have an extensive backlog of orders that we have to clear, and we continue to ask for patience on the part of our customers. There is indeed light at the end of the tunnel.” Year-to-date, total new-vehicle sales in South Africa are up 13.8%, to 344 244 units. Used-Car Market Waning “The appeal of the pre-owned market appears to be waning, likely due to price inflation and the increasingly limited availability of good stock,” says Gaoaketse. “Where the pre-owned market has been offering affordability solutions for cost-conscious consumers, the average deal size on a used car has now increased over 10% year-on-year, while the value of finance agreements on new vehicles over the same period is static.” This will fuel the new-vehicle market as the replacement cycle comes under pressure and motorists require new mobility solutions to combat the rising operating costs of older vehicles. Dommisse says that another trend worth noting is the manner in which imported cars are now finding acceptance in a market previously dominated by locally-made models, especially in the more affordable vehicle segments. There is also a clear indication that good quality cars from China, such as Chery and Haval, are n...

Toyota South Africa Motors (TSAM) says its Prospecton plant, in Durban, should be back to full production at the end of September. Assembly operations were suspended on April 12 owing to severe flooding at the factory and surrounding areas. TSAM's catalytic converter exhaust export facility was the first assembly line to return to production following mop-up operations, with work restarting on May 9. The Hino truck plant followed on May 24, the Hiace minibus line on July 15, with the Hilux and Fortuner lines resuming operations on July 21. Corolla Cross production restarted at the end of July. Corolla Quest assembly is scheduled to resume operations this month. It is envisaged that the plant will return to full production – matching pre-flood levels – by the end of September. TSAM sold 7 110 new vehicles in July – out of an industry total of 43 593 units – registering a market share of 16.3%. While still being number one in the market, this percentage is significantly smaller than Toyota's usual share, which is normally closer to 25% of the market. “The incredible loyalty shown by our customers over the last few months has helped to re-energise and motivate us,” says TSAM sales and marketing senior VP Leon Theron. “We are truly grateful to our colleagues at Prospecton in Durban for their massive efforts in reviving our plant. “We are thankful to our fleet owners and the rental companies for their continued support in these trying economic times. We are also grateful to our dealer network, as well as all Toyota staff, for their sterling efforts in making Toyota such a competitive brand.”
Although #vanlife has been glamourised on social media in recent years, Goose and Ellen open up about the realities of living on the road full-time, without a physical house as a base. With several different vehicles that they've called home, in two countries, over three years, they are definitely pros at this. In this episode they share the highlights - like waking up for sunrise every morning; and open up about the challenges - like rolling your van (aka house) on a rural road. They also talk about the hilarious wtf moments (warning: not safe for work). For Goose and Ellen, living in a van has given them the freedom and flexibility to travel around the Aotearoa. They're now based in Kaikōura, 16 seconds away from the beach, with the mountains as their backdrop, working dream jobs as opportunities arose from living on the road and having the time to hone their skills. Goose and Ellen's advice to anyone that wants to live a similar lifestyle on the road - just do it! Thank you so much for tuning in and coming along for the ride. If you love the show and enjoyed listening, please take the time to leave a review on Apple or Spotify. I would also love to connect with you, so send me a DM on Instagram, leave me a voice message and I can't wait to see you next time. Toyota South Africa Motors (TSAM) has resumed operation of its catalytic convertor export line and will, in the next few days, also open the Hino truck assembly line. This follows extensive flooding at the Prospecton plant, in Durban, a month ago. TSAM notes, however, that it will take some time for its main assembly lines – Hilux, Fortuner, Hiace, Corolla Cross and Corolla Quest – to reopen. The local arm of the Japanese vehicle manufacturer expects to lose around 45 000 units in production, with these vehicles destined for both the local and export markets. TSAM president and CEO Andrew Kirby says the organisation is implementing “a careful and systematic phased plan” to return the Durban facility to working condition. He adds that the flooding “has been a tremendous setback for the company, but we have extensive insurance coverage. We are also fortunate that our parent company, Toyota Motor Corporation, is supporting us with all the cashflow challenges that we are likely to encounter.” “We've created an internal slogan for our recovery, called ‘Rebuilding Better Together',” says Kirby. “This talks to how we all work together as one team to find a way of renewing and improving our site at the same time.” “We've been through the process of cleaning, drying and flushing,” Kirby explains. “Now, we are checking all of our equipment, repairing, powering up the control panels and having to order replacement parts where necessary. We are at a point where it's not easy to predict when we would be able to start-up.” Toyota global president Akio Toyoda has sent close to 60 top specialists and engineers from Japan to support the recovery of the TSAM plant. TSAM notes that it is working closely with the City of eThekwini to address some of the infrastructural shortfalls in the area around the plant to prevent a reoccurrence of a similar disaster. From a human resource perspective, the majority of Toyota employees fall under the National Bargaining Forum (NBF) and, as such, payment is governed by the rules of the NBF, whereby 50% of wages are paid when there is no work available. However, TSAM says it is working to boost employee earnings by bringing in staff on a rotational basis to assist in clean-up activities; working with government to provide temporary financial relief measures; requesting financial institutions, with whom employees have loans, for a three-month payment holiday; and working with local nongovernmental organisations to use TSAM employees to provide community support following the widespread floods. Employees who volunteer for such activities will be paid by TSAM. TSAM sales and marketing senior VP Leon Theron emphasises that Toyota customers remain the company's priority. “We are constantly communicating with customers whose vehicle deliveries have been impacted by the floods, and we are truly appreciative of their patience to date. “With regards to completely built-up models, it's business as usual – in fact, we have been able to negotiate additional supply despite global shortages. So, we'll have extra units to compensate for the temporary lack of availability on locally-built models.”

I immediately thought: If this is a lottery, what’s second prize? Two of those death-trap shitboxes? “Following the success of Mustang BULLITT and Mustang R-SPEC, we are very excited to introduce this highly capable, track ready Mustang to our Australian Mustang fans. The unique styling, which pays homage to the original model, is more than worthy of its legendary badge.” - Andrew Birkic Andrew Birkic there - President and CEO, Ford Shitsville and Sheepshaggistan (or, as I like to call him: ‘Big Birk’.) What is this “success” to which you allude, dude? Let me paint the Mustang sales picture for you, shall I, lest you erroneously believe this vehicle is actually a success, as alleged by B-squared? Mustang sales peaked in ‘Straya at about 9000 units in 2017. That was a win - no argument. But the next year, in 2018, they fell 30 per cent. In 2019 … a further 38 per cent implosion. And this year, Mustang sales have jumped off another cliff - 36 per cent down so far. ‘On track’ (if that’s the right term) for 2900 sales by the end of 2020. So, let me get this straight: you Ford ‘Straya dudes took one of the world’s muscle car icons, which is roughly as old as me (within months, actually) with huge cachet … and you managed to turn more than 9000 sales into less than 3000 - in four years (inclusive). Well done. ‘Result’ as they say on The Sweeney. So - that’s corporate out-of-touchedness. Here’s strategic vulnerability. The fact is, Ford in ‘Straya is one vehicle away from outright commercial collapse - and that vehicle is Ranger, and (to some extent) its spin-off, Everest. Everest exists only thanks to Ranger, and they roll on essentially the same architecture. Ranger 4X4 is the big win for Big Birk, with 26,377 sales so far this year, augmented by about 1800 Ranger 4X2s and about 4000 Everests. Together these comprise 32,000 of the almost-41,000 sales Ford Shitsville has made so far this year. It’s about 80 per cent of the business. In other words: Endura, Escape, Fiesta, Focus, Mondeo, and Puma are all nowhere. Statistically, nobody buys them. This is the real ‘Ford ‘Straya’ story - and it’s not being reported because publishers want Ford’s advertising revenue, right up to the day Dr Kevorkian gets on the line from Dearborn. Every non-Ranger based vehicle in the Ford inventory is costing the business money just by being there, available for sale. Homologation, parts, training - whatever. Ford would be more profitable in Shitsville without them. I guess the Ford Transit is successful in the context of vans, with about 2300 sales so far this year: Number three, behind Hiace and iLoad. Just to be fair. But without Ranger and its derivatives, Ford Shitsville would have slightly less commercial footprint than Chinese upstart, MG. Or, it be slightly in front of LDV (by about 2500 sales) at this point of 2020. To me, this is huge strategic risk. ‘Vulnerability’ is a better word. It takes just one disruption for Ford’s business to collapse in Australia.

Gears and Beers: The Unashamedly Unprofessional Automotive Podcast
We're back with episode 88, and after our useful bollocks, we start off the news from the world of Toyota and their plan to compete against the GTI, RS, and Type R in the Hot Hatch market with a go-fast 1.6L Turbo'd Corolla. Then Joseph brings up more news from the world of Toyota, with them announcing the new HiAce, a vehicle that hasn't had an update since 2004. Matt then brings up some news (for a change), about Volkswagen Australia dropping $3,000 from 2018-plate Golf R's and GTI's, then we argue about hot hatches for a bit. Matt actually brings up some more news (clearly on a roll) about the next Ford Ranger that's been leaked, and Jetta being a Volkswagen sub-brand in China. We then talk a bit more about the 1.6L turbo Corolla, then Mitch gets roasted by Joseph over his shirt, before Mitch talks about how when astronauts spend 6 months or more in space, their driving ability is impaired back on Earth for up to a week when they return. The last piece of news, once again from Matt, is about Holden editing or removing comments on their social media, then Joseph tells us a story about his family's car buying habits. We then talk a bit about Subaru WRX's and Mitsubishi Evolution's, then we talk about track-slut 86's and BRZ's, and Matt and Mitch bitch about our shared hatred of our head units. We then play 'How Bout Dat', starting off with Nissan.
