Japanese automaker Toyota is “exploring rockets,” chairman Akio Toyoda announced on stage at CES 2025 on Monday, while hinting at the idea of moving people through space. The rocketry mention on the CES 2025 stage came while Toyoda was in the middle of explaining how he views his company's myriad technologies as “invention by kakezan,” or “invention by multiplication.” John Deere has a bunch of new products that it just showed off at CES 2025, including an electric robot lawnmower meant for commercial-grade landscaping. Powered by a 21.4kWh battery — roughly a quarter the size of what you'd find on a passenger EV — the company says the mower is supposed to be able to operate for up to 10 hours. It uses four pairs of stereo cameras, two on each side, to see in 360 degrees. Learn more about your ad choices.

This marks Henrik Fisker's second car company to declare bankruptcy.Fisker filed for Chapter 11 after months of quality issues with its Ocean crossover and significant financial losses, including a $463 million net loss in Q4 2023.The Ocean crossover struggled with distribution, incomplete software, and multiple safety investigations, including braking and door-latch issues by NHTSA.Partnership negotiations with Nissan failed, adding to the strain on Fisker's finances and operations.Henrik Fisker announced, "proceeding with a sale of our assets under Chapter 11 is the most viable path forward," as the company reported assets between $500 million to $1 billion and liabilities from $100 million to $500 million.Production at Magna Steyr's plant in Austria was halted in March, leading to a $400 million revenue loss for Magna and 500 job cutsToyota Chairman Akio Toyoda and nine other board members were re-elected at the annual general meeting, with shareholders overlooking governance and certification test scandals. Toyota's Conservative Move Pays Off: Hybrids Over Full Electrics

While many major car manufacturers rushed headlong into the electric vehicle (EV) market to mixed results, the Japanese automaker, Toyota, adopted a more conservative approach. A focus on hybrids over full electric vehicles, saw them weather what other companies are increasingly recognizing as a tumultuous entry into the EV sector. Following the trepidation of the previous CEO, Akio Toyoda, who eloquently conveyed that transition to EVs would take 'longer than media anticipates,' the company is now poised to reap the financial benefits. Striking a careful balance between innovation and consumer acceptance, Toyota's strategy seems to be paying off, despite the contradictory environmental narratives. Toyota has reported impressive statistics for 2023, riding a wave of strong hybrid vehicle sales. This sustained strategy is projected to yield over $30 billion in net profits for the fiscal year concluding in March. Over time, Toyota's resolve has been bolstered by the struggles of its competitors, some of whom are dealing with substantial losses on their EV product lines. This suggests that Toyota's conservative approach may be more in line with market realities than the strategies adopted by other manufacturers. The company has exhibited a remarkable 6.6% uptick in sales for 2023, compared to the previous year. According to data from InsideEVs, this success can be attributed in part to its hybrid models. In the U.S., Toyota's sales include nearly 15,000 pure EVs, 40,000 plug-in hybrids, and over 600,000 non-rechargeable hybrids. These figures testify to the consumer acceptance of Toyota's balanced portfolio of products.  See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

It's Friday, friends and today we're talking about Hertz's big move away from EVs. We also talk about Toyota's move to keep the ICE alive, as well as Walmart's new tech announcements are all-in on human helpfulness. Once a major proponent of EV adoption Hertz, is now selling a third of its EV fleet due to lower than expected demand, signaling a broader industry retreat from rapid EV expansionThis marks a significant reversal from its 2021 commitment to purchase 100,000 Tesla EVs, a move that previously boosted both companies' stock values. The industry's cooling on EVs reflects consumer concerns over limited charging infrastructure, battery range, and high prices, leading to slowed sales growth.Despite early enthusiasm, including a deal for 65,000 cars from Polestar and 175,000 from GM, Hertz faces higher EV repair costs and depreciating fleet values, partly due to Tesla's price cuts.Hertz plans to offset the $245 million cost from selling 20,000 EVs by purchasing more internal combustion engine vehicles, aiming for better profitability and the company also lowered its financial outlook for the year, citing additional costs primarily associated with EVs.On their site you can see there are a number of Tesla Model 3 sedans priced around 18k, meaning that after the federal tax credit, you can get a used tesla from Hertz for as low as 14kFormer CEO and current Chairman of Toyota, Akio Toyoda is back championing the ongoing relevance of internal combustion engines, asserting their vital role in achieving carbon neutrality and preserving automotive tradition meanwhile confirming the company's progress toward a lower cost, solid state EV battery with 750 miles of range and a 10 minute charge time. "Should we not all have enthusiasm for cars as we take on the challenge," Toyoda stated at the Tokyo Auto Salon where Toyota and Lexus showcased several high-performance vehicles. Toyoda, advocating for a balanced approach to carbon neutrality in the automotive sector  while developing EVs emphasizing the importance of preserving jobsThe company says we can expect to see some of these fast charging, longer range, lower cost batteries as early as 2027Meanwhile at CES, Walmart CEO Doug McMillon showcased the company's "people-led, tech-powered" strategy, emphasizing new AI and AR technologies while underscoring the importance of human engagement in the digital era.“We build technology to serve people and not the other way around,” McMillon stated, reaffirming Walmart's commitment to a human-centric approach in its technological evolution.Drone delivery expansion in Dallas-Fort Worth is part of Walmart's omnichannel approach providing service to an addition 1.8M households…75% of the market areaHosts: Paul J Daly and Kyle MountsierGet the Daily Push Back email at https://www.asotu.com/ JOIN the conversation on LinkedIn at: https://www.linkedin.com/company/asotu/ Read our most recent email at: https://www.asotu.com/media/push-back-email ASOTU Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/automotivestateoftheunion

Pulling The Plug on Forced Electric Vehicles

In a fervent push towards electric vehicles (EVs), the government's rapid mandates clash with market realities. Toyota's Chairman, Akio Toyoda, advocates for a balanced strategy, emphasizing investments in alternatives like hybrid technology and hydrogen. Concerns arise as substantial funds with ties to the Chinese government pour into EV-related projects.Despite government incentives, Ford and GM face challenges, scaling back ambitious EV production plans and raising questions about profitability. Tesla reports diminishing margins. Additionally, the lack of financial controls poses risks to taxpayers. This approach, akin to communist-style central planning, jeopardizes America's transportation leadership. It's time for policymakers to reassess investments in unproven technologies for a balanced and informed future.Grab a copy of my book:https://partsmanagerpro.gumroad.com/l/qtqax"The Parts Manager Guide" - https://www.amazon.com/Parts-Manager-Guide-Strategies-Maximize-ebook/dp/B09S23HQ1P/ref=sr_1_4?crid=3UZYOGZJUNJ9K&keywords=parts+manager+guide&qid=1644443157&sprefix=parts+manager+guid%2Caps%2C244&sr=8-4 Please remember to like, share and leave your comments.Videos are uploaded weekly. Ultra-Progressive Investors want Akio Toyoda OUT!

Influential ultra-progressive investors of Toyota are now calling to remove Akio Toyoda from the board entirely at Toyota's June 14 shareholder meeting. Akio stepped down as CEO on April 1st of this year (replaced by Koji Sato from Lexus), but Akio still remained on the board. AKIO TOYODA IS VIRTUALLY THE ONLY AUTOMOTIVE LEADER… With the courage to express his concerns about diving head-first into full-scale EV adoption. And whether or not you personally agree with him… really isn't the point. The point is: we deserve to hear the experts. Akio is presenting facts. But the people who pull the strings don't care about facts. In fact… they're silencing them. AKIO TOYOTA HAS A LIFETIME OF COLLECTED KNOWLEDGE & WISDOM ABOUT THE AUTOMOTIVE INDUSTRY & MANUFACTURING CARS. He was born into the Toyota family, and he has led Toyota first-hand. I would bet – the investors now calling for his resignation have no idea (and absolutely don't care) what a 4AGE, AW11, or AE86 is. The point is: They don't know the brand, and they are not investing into the best future for Toyota. They're investing into the best future that backs their other investments. For illustration – if I were one of these investors, & I happened to ALSO be even more heavily invested in cobalt & lithium mining… it would be in my best interest to silence anyone who was not 100% promoting the EV agenda. The wealth & influence is almost unfathomable. And if Akio and/or Toyota is a casualty… so be it. These investors are using their power to silence Akio Toyoda… in order to continue stacking the deck in their favor. And to keep all the useful idiots (like you & me) misinformed & compliant. IT'S BEEN SAID MANY TIMES, AND IT SHOULD GO WITHOUT SAYING: We need to be listening to the smartest people in the room when it comes to a strategy for EV adoption. Akio Toyoda has earned the platform to speak… and it would behoove everyone to listen. Why are other automotive leaders not speaking? As a society, we should not put all of our eggs in one basket & silence anyone who points out a flaw in the basket. We're past that point, it's not necessary, and the automotive industry has options. Who decided EVs are the best & only way forward… and everything else gets shelved without consideration? TOYOTA IS THE COMPANY THAT PIONEERED HYBRID VEHICLES, REMEMBER? BEFORE IT WAS “COOL”. Toyota has put more than 23 million hybrids, plug-ins, and full EVs on the road. More than every other company combined. Most of those were under the leadership of Akio Toyoda. So this call for resignation is NOT about Toyota's failure to be progressive & innovative & sustainable & green. No – this is about powerful people silencing a voice of wisdom that is questioning the agenda. It exemplifies everything that is wrong with publicly traded companies. And it's made the automotive industry incredibly vulnerable to manipulation. •Get the free S3 Magazine app•

Toyota South Africa Motors (TSAM) has resumed operation of its catalytic convertor export line and will, in the next few days, also open the Hino truck assembly line. This follows extensive flooding at the Prospecton plant, in Durban, a month ago. TSAM notes, however, that it will take some time for its main assembly lines – Hilux, Fortuner, Hiace, Corolla Cross and Corolla Quest – to reopen. The local arm of the Japanese vehicle manufacturer expects to lose around 45 000 units in production, with these vehicles destined for both the local and export markets. TSAM president and CEO Andrew Kirby says the organisation is implementing “a careful and systematic phased plan” to return the Durban facility to working condition. He adds that the flooding “has been a tremendous setback for the company, but we have extensive insurance coverage. We are also fortunate that our parent company, Toyota Motor Corporation, is supporting us with all the cashflow challenges that we are likely to encounter.” “We've created an internal slogan for our recovery, called ‘Rebuilding Better Together',” says Kirby. “This talks to how we all work together as one team to find a way of renewing and improving our site at the same time.” “We've been through the process of cleaning, drying and flushing,” Kirby explains. “Now, we are checking all of our equipment, repairing, powering up the control panels and having to order replacement parts where necessary. We are at a point where it's not easy to predict when we would be able to start-up.” Toyota global president Akio Toyoda has sent close to 60 top specialists and engineers from Japan to support the recovery of the TSAM plant. TSAM notes that it is working closely with the City of eThekwini to address some of the infrastructural shortfalls in the area around the plant to prevent a reoccurrence of a similar disaster. From a human resource perspective, the majority of Toyota employees fall under the National Bargaining Forum (NBF) and, as such, payment is governed by the rules of the NBF, whereby 50% of wages are paid when there is no work available. However, TSAM says it is working to boost employee earnings by bringing in staff on a rotational basis to assist in clean-up activities; working with government to provide temporary financial relief measures; requesting financial institutions, with whom employees have loans, for a three-month payment holiday; and working with local nongovernmental organisations to use TSAM employees to provide community support following the widespread floods. Employees who volunteer for such activities will be paid by TSAM. TSAM sales and marketing senior VP Leon Theron emphasises that Toyota customers remain the company's priority. “We are constantly communicating with customers whose vehicle deliveries have been impacted by the floods, and we are truly appreciative of their patience to date. “With regards to completely built-up models, it's business as usual – in fact, we have been able to negotiate additional supply despite global shortages. So, we'll have extra units to compensate for the temporary lack of availability on locally-built models.”

Toyota, one of the world's largest automakers, is planning to invest 4 trillion yen ($35 billion) to build a full lineup of 30 battery-powered electric vehicles by 2030. It aims to also increase global sales of battery electric vehicles by 3.5 million units a year by the end of the decade, CEO Akio Toyoda said Tuesday. Most of Toyota's current electric vehicle sales are hybrid electric cars that are powered by a combination of an internal combustion engine and battery-operated electric motors. Battery-only EVs make up only a fraction of its current sales. MotorTrend on Monday named the all-electric Rivian R1T the publication's 2022 truck of the year, beating out other pickups from Ford Motor, General Motors and Hyundai Motor. Kroger said Tuesday that it will take away paid leave for unvaccinated employees who get Covid-19 and require some of them to pay a monthly health insurance surcharge starting next year. The country's largest supermarket operator sent a companywide memo announcing the changes, which take effect Jan. 1. A company spokeswoman said the new policies are intended to encourage staff to get the Covid vaccines, adding it will continue to offer a $100 incentive to all employees who become fully vaccinated. Google has told its employees that they will lose pay — and will eventually be fired — if they don't comply with the company's Covid-19 vaccination policy, according to internal documents.

TOYOTA'S ELECTRIC VEHICLE PLANS ARE GETTING BIGGER AND MORE EXPENSIVE - Toyota is ramping up its electric vehicle production schedule, vowing to release 30 electric vehicles by 2030 rather than just 15 EVs by 2025, as was previously promised. The Japanese automaker also vowed to sell 3.5 million battery EVs globally by 2030 and to transform Lexus into an EV-only brand by 2035. - the company's top executives, including billionaire CEO Akio Toyoda, have been on the record calling the trend toward electric vehicles “overhyped” in part because of emissions associated with power plants — which is a favorite talking point used by the oil and gas industry. - But in an event Tuesday, Toyoda changed his tune, touting the need for the company to reduce tailpipe emissions by releasing more EVs. - As part of the announcement, Toyota showed several dozen concept vehicles, including sedans, sports cars, crossovers, SUVs, pickup trucks, and even a couple of boxy shuttles. The company didn't release many details about each vehicle but did note that a planned Lexus sports car would have a “cruising range” of 700 km (434 miles) and be able to accelerate from 0 to 60mph in under two seconds. It's clear these vehicles are concepts or design studies for now, with blacked-out windows to hide their lack of real interiors. - another eight electric cars to fill out this line with some exciting potential cars. There are two commercial vehicles, called the Mid Box and Micro Box, and two more SUVs. One appears on the smaller side with the name "Small SUEV" and the other looks closer to the BZ compact SUV concept, though it just wears a "Crossover EV" name. - Toyota showed what sure looks like a successor to the beloved FJ Cruiser called the Compact Cruiser EV concept. The boxy off-road SUV wears a familiar shade of blue to the departed Jeep Wrangler rival and even rocks similar design language to the previous SUV. There's also the Pickup EV, which looks a lot like today's Tacoma with minimal changes and -- are you ready for this? -- a sports car. Original Source : https://www.cnet.com/roadshow/news/toyota-reveals-future-electric-cars-beyond-zero/ TOYOTA SHIFTS GEARS WITH MAJOR INVESTMENT IN ELECTRIC VEHICLES - In November, Toyota declined to join a pledge signed by six major carmakers, including General Motors, and Ford Motor Co. to phase out fossil fuel cars by 2040. It argued that not all parts of the world would be ready to transition to green cars by then. - In addition to battery EVs, Toyota also builds hydrogen fuel cell cars, and is developing internal combustion engines that run on hydrogen fuel, although it has not said when it might commercialize the technology. - Toyota recently promised that it will be ready to sell only zero-emission cars in Europe by 2035 Original Source : https://www.japantimes.co.jp/news/2021/12/14/business/corporate-business/toyota-30-ev-models-2030/ HERE'S HOW MUCH HYUNDAI'S COOL, NEW IONIQ 5 EV WILL COST - The cheapest way to get an Ioniq 5 will be the 125 kW (168 hp) rear-wheel drive SE Standard Range model with the smaller 58 kWh battery pack. This will cost $39,700 before the IRS 30D tax credit and any local incentives. However, as is nearly always the case with a new car regardless of OEM, if you want the cheapest one, you need to be prepared to wait, as it will only become available in spring 2022. - The cheapest long-range Ioniq 5 is the $43,650 RWD SE, then there's the $45,900 Ioniq 5 SEL, followed by $50,600 Ioniq 5 Limited. If you prefer more power and don't mind charging slightly more often, that version of the Ioniq 5 SE starts at $47,150, with the AWD Ioniq 5 SEL at $49,900 and the AWD Ioniq 5 Limited at $54,500. Original Source : https://arstechnica.com/cars/2021/12/heres-how-much-hyundais-cool-new-ioniq-5-ev-will-cost/ THE 'CHEAP' HYUNDAI IONIQ 5 UNDERCUTS ALMOST ALL EV CROSSOVERS/SUVS - This entry-level version has 220 miles of EPA range, a 125 kW electric motor for rear-wheel-drive, and, most importantly, an MSRP of $39,700 (+$1,225 DST), which after deducting the $7,500 federal tax credit will turn into effectively $33,425. Once we checked the list of available EVs, it turns out that it's one of the least expensive electric crossovers/SUVs. - An interesting thing is that the Hyundai Ioniq 5 SR undercuts the base Ford Mustang Mach-E on price (by $4,195), but is expected to deliver only a slightly lower range, despite the battery being much smaller. On the other hand, the Ford Mustang Mach-E should be much quicker. Hyundai Ioniq 5 will fast charge at a higher rate. - Here is another surprise, the entry-level Hyundai Ioniq 5 is marginally less expensive than the Volkswagen ID.4 (we don't have prices for the 2022 model year yet). However, that's only because the ID.4 does not have its lower-spec trims on the market yet (like the 62 kWh battery version). It also has noticeably more range and power. - he Hyundai Ioniq 5 SR is $200 less expensive than the base Kia Niro EV. And the EPA range is only slightly lower. - The poor Chevrolet Bolt EUV is temporarily out of production, but even if it was being produced, it would not be eligible for the $7,500 federal tax credit. It means that after deducting the tax credit, the Hyundai Ioniq 5 SR would be, on paper, less expensive. Pretty surprising anomaly considering how much smaller the Bolt EUV is. VAUXHALL RULED AS BRITISHA number of people, who were clearly very bored, have complained to the Advertising Standards Agency (ASA), over the claim by Vauxhall that it has been a “British Brand since 1903”. Those with nothing else to do, cited the ownership by GM and now Stellantis, both of whom are foreign companies, to show they were no longer British. The ASA agreed with Vauxhall’s response that it only sells to the United Kingdom. To read more, click the Automotive Management article here. CITY CENTRIC THINKINGThere were two articles this week, that were based on urban dwellers, but are part of a worrying trend in the discussions over the future of transportation and mobility, seemingly ignoring those outside of towns and cities. Added to this, the analysis and ‘research’ by organisations releasing the ‘news’ to the media is flawed and suspect. The first was about SUVs and how they should be banned, you can read and mock the BBC News article here. Fortunately, the RAC spokesperson talks sense in that piece. The second is a survey, which we cannot see the questions asked, that shows city dwellers want new ICE vehicles banned from 2030. Again, the organisation this info comes from is one whose findings we have routinely questioned. Added to this, we all know we can get surveys to say whatever we want them to, if you try hard enough. Each year, the tech industry Super Bowl that is the Consumer Electronic Show takes over Las Vegas in a display of enough futuristic innovation, gadgetry and wizardry to blow the circuits and make a believer of even the most resolute luddite.   The name “Consumer Electronics Show” feels a little outdated, hinting at the Betamax player that was never hooked up. In reality, the convention feels more and more like it is sponsored by lightworkers from another dimension.  Certainly, the ideas that will drive consumer change in the technology sphere are debuted here, and on this show floor what was once a dream begins to become reality.   More than 4,400 companies exhibit on the show floor, walked by over 182,000 attendees from 160 countries. From a glass toaster and “egg whisperer” that tells you which eggs are oldest, to digital sleep aids that retrain your brain, and of course to TV’s the size of your garage door, CES delivers astounding gizmos of every size.   For Toyota, the mission as CES is a little more serious: Innovations in autonomous driving, alternative fuel cell technologies, plus the range of mobility solutions currently in development give Toyota a strong slate of news on the floor.   It’s our chance to offer a glimpse of the technologies that will change society and define the future – and here at Toyota, we like to stay on the cutting edge of this revolution.   But it’s not just about the stuff, cool as it is. As Toyota’s Executive Vice President of sales, Bob Carter, said on stage at CES, “even though new technology is important, what matters is how it serves society. And that’s why our global president Akio Toyoda wants our company to transition from an automobile company to a mobility company, pursuing mobility for all.”   So today, we’re not just looking at cars – we’re looking at the future of mobility, which in some cases, is actually already here. That’s why we started something called Toyota AI Ventures, which is Toyota's first dedicated venture capital fund. It’s a $100M fund that was founded in July 2017, and it's focused on investing in early-stage companies that are focusing on artificial intelligence, data, and the cloud, as applied to autonomous mobility and robotics. So, we look for entrepreneurs that are bringing disruptive business models and innovative technologies to the marketplace, and give them the resources they need to bring forth the future of mobility.   Today’s guests are part of Toyota AI Ventures and join us from the show floor to offer a glimpse of this future: Toyota AI Ventures CEO Jim Adler, Intuition Robotics CEO and co-founder Dor Skuler, and May Mobility CEO and co-founder Ed Olson.   We’re also joined by special guest and co-host Austin Evans, a tech influencer who’s been at this longer than the idea of being a tech influencer or YouTuber have existed. Austin posted his first tech video in 2007 and now has over 3.6 million subscribers on YouTube.  To kick off our CES special, let’s sit down with Austin to learn more about what his world is like and the trends he’s seen at CES over the past 9 years.   So settle in for a trip to CES 2019 – the closest thing on Earth to a rocket to Pluto.   Resources: Toyota AI Ventures: https://toyota-ai.ventures/ Intuition Robotics: https://www.intuitionrobotics.com/ May Mobility: https://maymobility.com/
