This audio is brought to you by Endress and Hauser, a leading supplier of products, solutions and services for industrial process measurement and automation. Toyota South Africa Motors (TSAM) has added the Hilux double-cab and Fortuner 48 V mild hybrids to its local production line-up at its Durban plant in KwaZulu-Natal. The addition of the new models brings Toyota's local hybrid production tally to three, adding to the existing Corolla Cross hybrid assembly. TSAM says the launch of the models "introduces electrification to the pick-up and sports-utility vehicle (SUV) range for the first time". The Hilux is South Africa's best-selling vehicle, while the Fortuner still commands the largest slice of the medium SUV segment in South Africa, with average sales of more 800 units a month and a market share of 40%. "By adding a hybrid 48 V system to the Hilux and Fortuner, Toyota strengthens its inclusive multi-technology pathway approach to carbon neutrality," notes the local arm of the Japanese manufacturer. "Toyota believes all customers need a variety of affordable and practical options, including for commercial and off-road vehicles." The hybrid system uses Toyota's 2.8 l diesel engine. This engine drives a compact motor generator using a belt system, which, in turn, charges the new 48 V, 7.6 kg lithium battery, which is small enough to be installed under the rear seats to minimise impact on cabin space. This battery also supplies the vehicle's 12 V system. Like Toyota's full hybrid electric systems, the battery is charged during deceleration, regenerating braking energy that would otherwise be lost, while also adding additional braking performance. Once charged, the battery sends up to 12 kW of power and 65 Nm of torque through the motor generator to the engine to enhance acceleration, power and efficiency. Toyota says the motor generator is compact and has been designed to withstand the harsher working environments of commercial vehicles, while the engine has been modified to adapt to the hybrid system. "A new two-arm belt tensioner and stronger belt material contribute to the improved drivability and a quieter ride, whilst retaining the vehicle's famous durability." Toyota also notes that the hybrid system, as well as an enhanced stop-start system that allows the engine to remain off for longer periods, both serve to improve fuel efficiency by up to 5% compared with the conventional non-electrified diesel powertrain. Mercedes-Benz, BMW, Toyota and Ford are all currently producing some form of hybrid in South Africa, or will soon do so.

The era of the crossover is here. Once the sedan was king, then the wagon became the family hauler, and then the minivan. Now, it's time for crossovers. Naturally, that means automakers will keep finding spaces to throw new models and leverage existing names. When it comes to Toyota, it's hard to find a name that resonates more than Corolla or Camry, which makes one of them a perfect addition to the crossover lineup. Toyota's Corolla Cross leverages the existing love for the Corolla's legacy, but gives shoppers, well, a crossover. Mazda approached its crossover and SUV naming conventions from a different angle. The company stuck with its alphanumeric system that its customers have grown to learn. Of course, the CX-5 is no spring chicken when it comes to the crossover sales sheet and has been in Mazda's lineup for over a decade. On this bonus episode of Quick Spin Talking Cars with the Boss, host Wesley Wren chats with Autoweek's boss: Natalie Neff. The pair chat about Neff's time with these two crossovers, and give context to the two models. Neff and Wren chat about the evolving crossover space, the hybrid powertrain in the Corolla Cross, and the consistent styling of Mazda's crossovers.

Toyota SA targets 2024, made-in-Durban hybrid Hilux introduction

Toyota South Africa Motors (TSAM) has confirmed that it is targeting the introduction of a mild-hybrid Hilux bakkie to the South African market next year. TSAM adds that the hybrid version of South Africa's best-selling vehicle will be produced at its Prospecton plant, in Durban, alongside the rest of the Hilux range. The hybrid Hilux will add to the Corolla Cross hybrid, also assembled at the Durban plant. The new addition will take the domestic automotive industry's hybrid production to five models by the end of 2024 - the Hilux and Corolla Cross mild hybrids, the Mercedes-Benz C-Class plug-in hybrid (PHEV), and the forthcoming Mercedes-Benz C63 AMG PHEV and the BMW X3 PHEV. Toyota in June conducted a demonstration run of the Hilux mild hybrid electric vehicle (MHEV) concept model at Kasarani, Kenya, during the seventh round of the World Rally Championship (WRC). The concept vehicle was driven by four-time WRC champion and former Toyota world-title winner Juha Kankkunen from Finland, with co-driver Jimmi Gathu, local Kenyan media personality and actor. "I'm 100% sure that this type of car will fit in Africa very well because there are still long-distance drives and it's very difficult to charge electric cars," said Kankkunen following the drive. "You can save fuel, which means less carbon dioxide. Africa is a good market for this kind of car...That is the future." Toyota earlier this year announced that it will take a multi-pathway approach to carbon neutrality, presenting various options that are fit-for-purpose to each region, under the policy of 'leaving no one behind'. In light of the often unstable electricity supply in Africa, the Japanese car maker believes that MHEVs are the continent's most viable entry point into the electric vehicle market, as they do not require charging infrastructure, while also making use of existing refuelling infrastructure.

The Corolla Cross is a low-priced, high-value crossover SUV, a vehicle type American consumers just can't seem to get enough of. In little more than a year on the market, it has already become a giant hit. The addition of a hybrid-powered version tops the model line with a model that isn't just efficient — it's engaging. More horsepower and a sport-tuned suspension will do that. The 2023 Corolla Cross Hybrid delivers better acceleration than the conventional Corolla Cross, and Toyota emphasizes that added sportiness in the way it decks it out. The Corolla Cross Hybrid is available as an S, SE, or XSE, the brand's sport-oriented grades. In addition to its taut suspension, even the base S features LED headlamps, 17-inch alloy wheels, an 8-inch touchscreen infotainment system, and smart key access. The SE adds privacy glass, roof rails, paddle shifters, blind spot monitor, and rear cross-traffic alert. The XSE is the sportiest and most luxurious Corolla Cross Hybrid with 18-inch alloy wheels, premium LED lighting front and rear, leatherette seat coverings, heated front seats, and a power-adjustable driver's seat. Host Jack Nerad had the chance to drive several Corolla Cross Hybrid variants at a recent driving event in Southern California, and he'll have a full report. Also in the road test segment, guest host Matt DeLorenzo was behind the wheel of the battery-electric Volkswagen ID.4. The ID.4 brings European driving dynamics to the BEV crossover segment, and Matt DeLorenzo, author of How to Buy an Affordable Electric Car, will share his thoughts. In the news, Tesla has cut the prices on some of its models for the sixth time this year. We'll tell you what's behind these unusual price changes and give you our comments coming up later in this segment. Also in the news this week, the other shoe dropped on federal electric-vehicle tax credits, and there are big winners and big losers. A number of well-known brands are crying this week. We'll give you the details plus our commentary on the multi-billion dollar decision a little later. On new-car front, Buick revealed the 2024 Envista, a vehicle it claims, offers the cargo space and utility of an SUV, packaged in the sleek proportions typically found in a sedan. Not only that, but it's darn good-looking. We'll give you the details and our reactions coming up. We have a terrific guest for you this week. Ted West is a veteran auto journalist and author of one of the best motor racing novels ever, a book called Closing Speed. He is also one of the reasons Host Jack Nerad got into the business of reviewing cars in the first place. We will bring you their conversation and much more in this episode of America on the Road.

With around 44% of Toyota's total production from its Durban plant exported to Europe, Toyota South Africa Motors (TSAM) is set to face a tough challenge as that market increasingly moves to hybrids and battery electric vehicles (BEVs), warns TSAM president and CEO Andrew Kirby. “The transition in Europe [to electrified vehicles] is going to be quick, and if we want to retain those exports, we will have to adapt to manufacturing either a low- or zero-emission Hilux. “This is a pressure point for us. It will have an enormous impact on us, the supply chain, and the economy, if we lose that market.” Europe is set to ban internal combustion engines by 2035, with increasingly strict emissions standards to be rolled out in the run-up to this deadline. Kirby notes that TSAM has, “as of today”, no production solution yet. “We are working with the entities responsible for Hilux design in Japan and Thailand, and we are also looking at what we can do from a production point of view. “From a business point of view, this is certainly one of the most critical challenges we face as a company.” Toyota in Japan will this year, most likely, decide where it will produce its forthcoming new-generation Hilux. Any support TSAM will receive from the South African government in its production evolution to new-energy vehicles (NEVs) – fuel-cell vehicles, hybrids, plug-in hybrids (PHEVs) and BEVs – remains unclear. Kirby says the Department of Trade, Industry and Competition has indicated that there will be an announcement in February's budget speech on the long-delayed support policy on the advancement of NEVs in South Africa. He adds that TSAM is gearing up to sell as many NEVs locally as possible, despite the energy crisis and the limited number of charging stations – 276 at the moment. TSAM is committed to increasing its NEV sales to at least 20% of its sales mix by 2025. “We don't have all the answers yet, and we don't have all the supply yet,” says Kirby. “[As noted], one of the challenges we have as a sector is that we don't yet have a committed direction or support programme from national government. “And, as we don't have a well-defined programme to support the manufacturing and sales of NEVs, we are not [seen] as a priority market for these scarce battery vehicles.” TSAM currently holds a 76% share of South Africa's small NEV market, says TSAM sales and marketing senior VP Leon Theron. This is largely boosted by sales of the Corolla Cross hybrid, produced in Durban. Theron says TSAM will this year add a Lexus PHEV to the local sales portfolio, with another Lexus PHEV and BEV to undergo tests for possible local introduction. The brand-new Crown hybrid will also be added to the mix. A Mirai hydrogen fuel-cell vehicle is already in the country for the purpose of a new-energy project in partnership with Sasol. The Mirai has already been refuelled locally by Sasol.

Toyota South Africa Motors (TSAM) has retained its number one position in the South African new-vehicle market in 2022, posting its forty-third straight year as the market leader. This comes despite the company's Durban plant closing its doors in April last year owing to severe flooding, and only reopening fully in August. The plant assembles the Corolla Cross, Fortuner, Hiace Ses'fikile minibus and Hilux models, as well as Hino trucks. TSAM sold 132 035 vehicles in the South African market in 2022, recording a market share of 24.9%. The company in 2021 achieved a market share of 25.4%, selling 117 659 units. TSAM's 12.2% growth in sales in 2022 lags only marginally behind the industry's total sales expansion of 13.9% for the year. “We are grateful to the entire TSAM team and dealers across the country for their continued efforts towards making Toyota a market leader, but we have learned from last year that we cannot be complacent,” says TSAM sales and marketing senior VP Leon Theron. “We emerged out of a tragedy and managed to achieve an overall market share of 24.9% in 2022 – and that's phenomenal. “Our mandate this year is to continue making Toyota, Lexus and Hino the brands of choice for our market. We will achieve this by constantly aligning ourselves with customer needs.”

New-vehicle sales stats show promise; used-car allure waning

The sales statistics for August indicate that “some form of stability” is returning to the new-vehicle market, says WesBank. August delivered the second-best performing sales month for the year (similar to last year), with 47 420 new-vehicle registrations – 14.2% higher than the same month in 2021. “It is interesting to note the correlation in market performance this year against 2021,” says WesBank marketing and communications head Lebogang Gaoaketse. “Last year, August put in the second-best selling month at the time, with March 2021 being the best sales month. Coincidentally, March 2022 sales have also, so far, been this year's best sales month.” If this could be defined as a trend, the market prospects for the remainder of the year could hold further promise, notes WesBank, as August 2021 sales were surpassed by September and November volumes last year. “August sales are also reassuring in the sense that the volume increase comes off a relatively high base,” notes Gaoaketse. “[Also], the interest rate hike in July appears not to have dampened market demand.” While more interest rate increases are inevitable this year, demand in the new-vehicle market continues to grow. “Applications for finance continue to show a growing demand for vehicle replacement, with WesBank's book showing strong double-digit growth, driven by applications for new vehicles,” says Gaoaketse. National Automobile Dealers' Association chairperson Mark Dommisse echoes this sentiment, noting that the appetite for new vehicles in South Africa continues to surprise motor industry pundits and forecasters alike, “as buyers show remarkable resilience in the face of tough economic pressures”. August new-passenger-car sales expanded by 14.6%, to 31 269 units, compared with the same month last year. Bakkie, van and minibus sales were up 13.1%, to 13 281 units, which was a far better performance than the 9 552 units sold in July. These numbers were boosted by the Toyota plant in Durban returning to production in August, following flooding in April. Toyota South Africa Motors (TSAM) notes that it has “started to bounce back” to pre-flood sales figures, posting a total of 11 138 sales for August. The company's latest sales are 4 028 units up compared with July, with August numbers “certainly propped up by the resumption of operations at the Prospecton Plant, albeit still in ramp-up phase”. “The resilience of the Toyota brand in South Africa was put to the test when production ceased for a few months following the devastating floods that caused damage to our plant in Durban,” says TSAM sales and marketing senior VP Leon Theron. “We are truly pleased to have models such as Hilux, Hiace, Fortuner, Corolla Cross and Quest rolling off the production line again. “However, we still have an extensive backlog of orders that we have to clear, and we continue to ask for patience on the part of our customers. There is indeed light at the end of the tunnel.” Year-to-date, total new-vehicle sales in South Africa are up 13.8%, to 344 244 units. Used-Car Market Waning “The appeal of the pre-owned market appears to be waning, likely due to price inflation and the increasingly limited availability of good stock,” says Gaoaketse. “Where the pre-owned market has been offering affordability solutions for cost-conscious consumers, the average deal size on a used car has now increased over 10% year-on-year, while the value of finance agreements on new vehicles over the same period is static.” This will fuel the new-vehicle market as the replacement cycle comes under pressure and motorists require new mobility solutions to combat the rising operating costs of older vehicles. Dommisse says that another trend worth noting is the manner in which imported cars are now finding acceptance in a market previously dominated by locally-made models, especially in the more affordable vehicle segments. There is also a clear indication that good quality cars from China, such as Chery and Haval, are n...
