What was Missing in Tryouts | Episode 146

Goalie Science

Tryout season is done. And whether your kid made the team or didn't, this episode is for you. Derek Boogaard just finished three weeks of evaluations — two teams he coached personally, five or six more he assisted with, and conversations with roughly 250 players. And the same problem kept showing up everywhere. It wasn't skating. It wasn't hands. It wasn't compete level. It was Hockey IQ. Kids who couldn't answer basic questions about strong side, weak side, or what they're supposed to do away from the puck. Kids whose hands were moving faster than their feet. Kids who could score 25 goals at Double A but had no idea how to earn ice time at Triple A. This episode breaks down exactly what coaches are looking for — and it's not the 15 most skilled players. It's the right players. The ones who can play a role, kill penalties, win battles in the d-zone, and connect the dots in real game situations. If your kid didn't make the team they wanted — or if they did and they want to stay there — this is the episode to listen to. You have one year until next tryouts. What you do between now and then is completely up to you. Hosted by Simplecast, an AdsWizz company. Evan interviews Providence College men's hockey head coach Nate Leaman about coaching, player development, recruiting, and shifting NCAA hockey pathways. Leaman recounts starting hockey at 13 in Ohio after soccer, crediting intensive skating instruction for later coaching and evaluation skills, and discusses key development windows (especially ages 10–14 for agility) plus the growing importance of hockey IQ after puberty, aided by game-like small-area games. He explains how juniors and adversity prepare players for college, why frequent team changes are recruiting red flags, and how the transfer portal often yields depth rather than “game breakers.” Leaman describes CHL players adjusting well to college culture but facing higher season intensity and more practice-based development. He anticipates later recruiting due to CHL/Europe eligibility and weighs proposed five-year eligibility rules, urging a 19-year-old start, while advocating for more Division I teams and possible structural changes beyond the NCAA.   Topics 00:34 Sports Dad Road Talk 02:31 Starting Hockey at 13 03:36 Skating Development Secrets 09:54 Hockey IQ and Small Area Games 13:28 Juniors and Handling Adversity 17:39 Transfer Portal Roster Building 21:57 CHL Players in College Hockey 25:59 Recruiting Shifts and D1 Expansion 36:25 Five Year Eligibility Debate 43:14 Recruiting Mistakes to Avoid 48:20 Wrap Up and Thanks

Hockey Training: Become a Better Hockey Player
Why 10 mins of stickhandling is better than 30

Hockey Training: Become a Better Hockey Player

When I told Scott and Jamie from the Crazy Hockey Dads podcast that I recommend just 10 minutes of stickhandling for kids, they looked at me like I was crazy. Too short. Not enough work. Half of it is rest, for crying out loud. But here's the thing: the best training is the training that actually gets done. In this episode, I break down why shorter, focused sessions beat longer ones every time. We get into the psychology of habit-building, why kids can't focus for 30 minutes straight (and why we shouldn't ask them to), and how 10-minute sessions actually create momentum that leads to way more total training time. I also explain what I'm really doing during those "rest periods" and why they're secretly some of the most valuable coaching moments for building hockey IQ. If you've ever struggled to get your kid to stick with at-home training, or if you're wondering whether these short sessions can actually make a difference, this one's for you. Takeaways: Why the best training is the training players will actually do How 10-minute sessions build consistency better than longer workouts The psychological advantage of "stacking" multiple short sessions Why rest periods are undercover Hockey IQ development How to make training feel fun instead of tedious What 10 minutes a day actually adds up to over a season
