Welcome to episode #963 of Six Pixels of Separation - The ThinkersOne Podcast. Daniel J. Levitin is a polymath whose career defies categorization - a neuroscientist, musician, and New York Times bestselling author, he seamlessly blends the scientific with the soulful. As a professor and researcher, his work has illuminated the deep connections between music, the brain, health, and creativity, with his insights gracing publications from Nature and Science to Rolling Stone and The Atlantic. Dan has not only revolutionized how we think about music through seminal works like This Is Your Brain On Music but also through his consultations with tech giants like Apple and Microsoft and his collaborations with legendary musicians like Joni Mitchell and Sting. In our conversation, Dan shares insights from his latest book, I Heard There Was a Secret Chord - Music As Medicine, a fascinating exploration of music's unique ability to heal and connect us. We discussed everything from the evolutionary roots of music to its capacity to transform physical and emotional health. He explained the brain's innate response to rhythm and melody, unpacking why music compels us to move and how it serves as one of humanity's oldest forms of therapy. The dialogue also touched on the neuroscience of creativity, the serendipity of success in the music industry (and business), and the evolving role of music in the streaming age. His work reminds us that music isn't just entertainment - it's a vital force that shapes who we are and how we connect with the world. If you've ever wondered why a particular song brings you to tears or makes you tap your foot uncontrollably, this episode will resonate deeply. Enjoy the conversation... Running time: 1:08:01. Maud Cuney Hare (1874–1936) was a musicologist, pianist, author, and activist during the early Jim Crow era. She is praised for creating one of the earliest collections of African-American music. Maud was also part of Niagara Movement and wrote for the NAACP's magazine, running in the same circles as W.E.B. Du Bois and other Black Bostonian intellectuals. These women dominated the airwaves: innovating, documenting, and creating the audio landscape we live in today. History classes can get a bad rap, and sometimes for good reason. When we were students, we couldn't help wondering... where were all the ladies at? Why were so many incredible stories missing from the typical curriculum? Enter, Womanica. On this Wonder Media Network podcast we explore the lives of inspiring women in history you may not know about, but definitely should. Every weekday, listeners explore the trials, tragedies, and triumphs of groundbreaking women throughout history who have dramatically shaped the world around us. In each 5 minute episode, we'll dive into the story behind one woman listeners may or may not know–but definitely should. These diverse women from across space and time are grouped into easily accessible and engaging monthly themes like Educators, Villains, Indigenous Storytellers, Activists, and many more. Womanica is hosted by WMN co-founder and award-winning journalist Jenny Kaplan. The bite-sized episodes pack painstakingly researched content into fun, entertaining, and addictive daily adventures. Or was it the other way around? This is where our story begins. When We're Singin' The Story of The Partridge Family and Their Music answers those question and more, in a detailed and revealing biography. This landmark television series launched the careers of David Cassidy, Susan Dey, Danny Bonaduce, Brian Forster and Suzanne Crough while capitalizing on the star power of Acadamy Award winning actress Shirley Jones and comedic talent Dave Madden. Wrecking Crew - LA Studio Musicians The music from the TV show (loosely based on The Cowsills) also stood on its own, thanks to the talents of the greatest singers, musicians and musical arrangers that ever walked the streets of Hollywood. John Bahler, Tom Bahler, (formerly The Love Generation), with Jackie Ward and Ron Hicklin were the real background voices.

This Week: Timber Choir joins us. This duo of Adam Sams & Brendan St. Gelais was born out of chance in a recording session at Brendan's studio in Nashville. Adam, who lives in Augusta and Brendan (who we are working on converting) talk about their independent musical journeys and how they converged, almost accidentally, to become a band making original music during the Covid-19 Pandemic. We’re excited to have chef and restaurateur Dale Talde back on the show. We’ve followed Dale’s career for many years, and he was one of the very first contributors to our book, Snacky Tunes: Music is the Main Ingredient, Chefs and Their Music. He stops by to talk about Goosefeather, his critically acclaimed modern Chinese restaurant in Tarrytown, NY, and shares what it’s like returning to the show Top Chef once again for its upcoming 18th season.Musically, we dig through our archives and revisit a July 2016 hang with Philadelphia’s OddKidOut. At the time he was just 20 years-old, and was co-creator of FACT Magazine's #FACTInstaBeats Instagram series. OddKidOut’s brand new single, “Moon Walk,” is out now. Snacky Tunes: Music is the Main Ingredient, Chefs and Their Music (Phaidon), is now on shelves at bookstores around the world. We’re revisiting stops on our recently wrapped 2020 virtual tour in support of our new book, Snacky Tunes: Music is the Main Ingredient, Chefs and Their Music. This pandemic plagued year has certainly reminded us of the importance of maintaining perseverance and hope. No other city is more imbued with that never-out-of-the-fight spirit than New Orleans, and it seemed fitting to conclude our tour there. Sitting down with us for a poignant discussion on music and food being beacons of light during difficult times were Chef Nina Compton of Compere Lapin and Bywater American Bistro; Ben Jaffe, Creative Director of the Preservation Hall Jazz Band; and Jacqueline Blanchard, owner of Coutelier NOLA who also co-hosted the event.Snacky Tunes: Music is the Main Ingredient, Chefs and Their Music (Phaidon), is now on shelves at bookstores around the world. We’re revisiting stops on our recently wrapped 2020 virtual tour in support of our new book, Snacky Tunes: Music is the Main Ingredient, Chefs and Their Music. Our London visit really had us nostalgic for those good ol’ days. Generating that fuzzy warm feeling were a trio of longtime Snacky Tunes pals, Chef Isaac McHale and Daniel Willis, co-owners of the Clove Club, Luca and Two Lights; and musician Al Doyle of Hot Chip and LCD Soundsystem. In addition to reminiscing about past hangs, we talked about the intersection of music and food along with holiday traditions. As Phaidon’s Executive Commissioning Editor, Food & Drink, Emily Takoudes has been integral in publishing some of the most influential gastronomy works of the last decade, including Regarding Cocktails by Sasha Petraske and Jeremy Fox’s On Vegetables. She’s also been vital in shepherding our very first book, Snacky Tunes: Music is the Main Ingredient, Chefs and Their Music, to bookshelves across the globe. Emily sits down with us to discuss her illustrious career, and shares what it’s like to work with best-selling novelists, award-winning chefs, a U.S. president and even an odd trio of food-and-music podcasters. We stretch back to 2012 to pull a spirited in-studio performance from our archives by Dragonette. The Canadian electropoppers dropped their Toronto restaurant tips on us, and also played their hit song, “Pick Up the Phone.” Dragonette just recently released their first track in two years. It’s a cover of the Sam Roberts Band song, “We’re All in This Together.”Snacky Tunes is powered by Simplecast.

Our friends at L.A.’s premiere cookbook shop Now Serving graciously hosted a panel featuring us and Andy and Briana Valdez of HomeState, moderated by Esquire’s Food & Drink Editor, Jeff Gordinier. The Valdez sisters contributed to the book, and even gave us their mom’s Peanut Butter Chicken recipe, and Jeff wrote one of the book’s forewords, so it was a total Snacky Tunes pals hang. We all caught up via Zoom, talked about the book and swapped stories about our love of music and food. For this week's episode, I'm talking antisemitism, Ilhan Omar, and about society's warm embrace of this type of bigotry. At the beginning of my podcast series, I did mention I would get political, and here is the first episode of it. So, the episode is titled "If You Want to Get Away With Being a Bigot, Be an Antisemite" because that's how I see antisemitism today. In fact, that's how most Jews see it, and all over the world. But with the current events that went on in the American Congress and Democratic party, I felt it's time to speak up and out. First, I give the super savage award, but this time it's without a comedic tone because I present it Congresswoman Ilhan Omar, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, and the Democratic party as a whole. In the past few weeks, Ilhan Omar had definitely made a name for herself, and this time not for breaking boundaries. Through her antisemitic tweets and inferences of Jewish control in Congress, the discussion of antisemitism on the left finally became mainstream. However, rather than calling her out on her bigotry and passing a resolution to condemn antisemitism, Nancy Pelosi decided to pass a resolution condemning all forms of hatred. In other words, she "all lives mattered" the cause for condemning antisemitism. I go into it more in the episode, but this is the gist. After the Super Savage Award, I dive straight into the firey pit of discussing antisemitism and what it means to go through it in society. Not only do I talk about its definition, but I also touch light upon the rise of antisemitism around the world. With Jews being attacked left and right in Europe and extremists from both sides calling for our demise, it's about time to call out the bee ess! In the fiery rant, I also touch upon the difference between antisemitism and criticizing Israel, and define the fine line between. The rest of that subject will be for another episode, but it's just a smidge. And for the rest of the episode, you'll come to see why you can get away with being a bigot if you just become an anti-semite.Resources and Links1. As we move along with the growth of my podcast, I'm tackling subjects I've been wanting to touch upon for a while. This time, I'm talking about Tourette Syndrome and everything in between it. As someone who struggles with tics and the anxieties that come with it, I want to use my voice for good. So, in order to show you a side of Tourette Syndrom beyond the common "f" bombs, let's dig in.When I talk about tics, I'm not necessarily talking about pests on a dog but more so about pests of the mind. Tourette Syndrome is a heavily stereotyped and misunderstood neurological disorder that causes the sufferer to have involuntary movements, sounds, or both together. Some people have stronger forms of Tourette than others, but what comes in common is the major discomfort. Overall, this is something one cannot control without therapy and possibly medications; the struggle can be embarrassing. Most of this episode has an undertone of "it's time to change the conversation" because it truly is time. Let's talk about Tourette Syndrome like we talk about our allergies, rashes, and all other itches. Many itches have Benedryl and Cortisone cream, but Tourette Syndrome is the one itch Gold Bond truly can't relieve.Super Savage Award Story Link https://uproxx.com/filmdrunk/florida-friday-woman-stabs-man-for-farting-on-her-head/Resources for Helphttps://tourette.org/https://www.betterhelp.com/https://www.talkspace.com/First and foremost, I want to give a special thanks to Purple Planet Music for the theme song to which I own no rights! Now, I know the title may have you thinking that I'm about to deny the fact that men struggle with eating disorders. However, I'm not. I've dedicated this episode to the subject of men with eating disorders, the stigmas behind it, and what it's like to experience it. Eating disorders take anyone hostage regardless of their genitalia and gender identity. So, without giving away the bulk of the episode, I'm going to touch upon the basics! :) According to the National Eating Disorders Association, about one in three persons with an eating disorder are male. Additionally, it is estimated that about ten million men will be affected by some sort of eating disorder at one point or another. The estimated number seems like a stretch, but busting stigmas and stereotypes about men with eating disorders will make more sense of it. In general, eating disorders affect millions of all backgrounds, classes, creeds, genders, and more and it's a hard situation.Within the episode, I'm going into the deep on how social media has a major impact on body image, and mostly in the worst way possible. I make my best effort to touch upon society's ass kissing of perfection and how it affects those with eating disorders. Unfortunately, we still live in a society where the perfectly sculpted man is a God. While there is the God, the woman with the slim figure, big ass, and really big boobs is the Goddess. In reality, it's all an illusion; in my mind, it's a trigger.Towards the end of the episode, I begin to expose my own personal wounds that I barely share with anyone. I share what it's like inside my head as a man with an eating disorder. Besides the inside of my head, I talk more about how eating disorders are more than just disordered eating. At the end of the day, eating patterns can change, but the skeletons in the closet remain. Overall, I stand firmly with my belief that we need to change the way we talk about eating disorders. Men with eating disorders suffer just as much as women, while both genders suffer in unison. Admitting that I'm a man with an eating disorder isn't for pity, but to empower other men to talk about their own. Beyond just men, I truly believe it's time we all open up on the subject of mental health. By doing so, we can eradicate the word "manorexia" and the actual disease of anorexia as well. Welcome back, everyone! If you couldn't tell from the title, today's episode is going to be about everyone's favorite subject: porn. However, I'm not going to touch upon how much I love porn and which genres, but the false expectations it sets up. To be more precise, I want to touch upon fantasy versus reality. Let's talk about how sex in real life isn't always one hundred percent perfect nor do we all look like gods and goddesses. It's time to talk about how lonely masturbating can be. In short, let's dive deep into porn, shall we? My Pornographic Reality CheckAs I did before, I begin to once again tell a story to tie us all into the subject. There was a time when I lived in Tel Aviv, Israel, and had been speaking to a man on Grindr whom I hoped would become my Christian Grey. Our conversations ran long, and my fantasies ran wild. All was perfect until the day that we met. Of course, I had this expectation that everything would be pornographically perfect. Those expectations failed me completely. Porn: Expectation vs. RealityLet's face it. Sex can be perfect, but not one hundred percent of the time. Porn makes sex look easy, clean, painless, and a breeze. At least with my experiences, it's usually more than half the time the opposite. For the next part of this segment, I address expectation versus reality and go into depth about sexual reality. This touches upon the subject of body image and the perfect portrayal of men and women, and how it's triggered me to no end. I even admit how I found myself confused because I was aroused by straight porn; Later I came to realize I felt more comfortable because I didn't have to compare myself to the woman like I do two men.Porn is to Adults as Cinderella is to ChildrenOverall, if you can relate then this episode is totally for you! I'm not speaking on behalf of every single person who loves masturbating and watching porn, but I know of a few who can understand. In my opinion, porn is to adults as the glass slipper is for children. Do we really live in a world where everyone has a Prince Charming? Is our sexual reality really one of multiple orgasms at the hands of a firefighter or a policeman in prison? Or is it really what we make of it, and not what a video can make of it for us? Let's explore this together!Links and MoreFirst and foremost, I want to give a special thanks to Purple Planet Music for the theme song to which I own no rights! You guys are truly amazing!
