Paul Scheer was in the "graduating class" at UCB a few years before we started there, so besides making a lot of cool stuff we like (How Did This Get Made?, Black Monday, Human Giant, The League, Unspooled, Crash Test and so on!) - which would already make us nervous to talk to him - there's also an extra aura of "freshmen talking to a senior" that made us ANXIOUS before we started recording. HOWEVER, it couldn't have been more fun and natural chatting with Paul, and a discussion about the perils of carpooling leads into talk about this DISGUSTING industry we all work in which leads into some REAL TALK about relationships, and gosh darn, we couldn't have had a lovelier time! PLUS, of course, we answer YOUR advice questions! If you'd like to ask advice questions, call 323-524-7839 and leave a VM or just DM us on IG or Twitter! The Total Tutor Neil Haley will interview ABC's The Middle Star Atticus Shaffer. Atticus Shaffer, stars as the lovable “Brick Heck" on ABC's Critics' Choice Award-winning comedy series “The Middle,” As you may know, “The Middle” follows the daily mishaps of a married woman and her semi-dysfunctional family and their attempts to survive life in general in the city of Orson, Indiana. Atticus plays "Brick," the youngest child of Frankie (Patricia Heaton) and Mike Heck (Neil Flynn), and is known both in the household and out for his eccentric behavior—his best friend is his backpack; however, that doesn't mean he can't pull it together when needed, in order to help his mom make a sale. The series is set to return with new episodes on January 7, 2015. Atticus began his professional acting career in 2006, when he landed a guest-starring role in the comedy series “The Class.” Other television appearances followed, including “The Human Giant,” “Days of Our Lives,” “Out of Jimmy's Head,” “Carpoolers and My Name is Earl,” as well as Disney's “I'm in the Band” and “Shake It Up.” On the big screen, he is perhaps best known for the bus stop scene he shared with Academy Award nominee Will Smith in Sony's super-hero comedy drama Hancock. Building on that momentum, Atticus went on to star in other feature films including The Unborn, An American Carol, Leaving Barstow and Opposite Day. Thanks,

On today's episode, I talk to TV writer Curtis Gwinn. Originally from Chicago, Curtis grew up in the suburbs outside of New York City, eventually finding his way to UCB. There he became a teacher and performer, and co-founded the team Death by Roo Roo, one of the best improv groups to come out of the theatre. His first professional jobs included writing for The Man Show and Human Giant, and from there he went on to co-create the Adult Swim show Fat Guy Stuck in Internet. Since moving to Los Angeles, he's written for NTSF:SD:SUV, The Walking Dead, The Leftovers, The Bastard Executioner and the forthcoming NTSF spin-off Filthy Preppy Teen$.This is the website for Beginnings, subscribe on iTunes, follow me on Twitter.
On today's episode, I talk to TV writer Tommy Blacha. Originally from Detroit, Michigan, Tommy came to TV writing through the Chicago comedy scene. Besides his writing for the WWE, if there's been a weird comedy in the last two decade, chances are Tommy's had something to do with it. He wrote for Conan, where he created PimpBot5000, and has also written for The Eric Andre Show, Pretend Time, Human Giant, Andy Richter Controls the Universe, Da Ali G Show, Late Night with Zach, TV Funhouse, and SNL. He's been a voice actor on China, IL and Aqua Teen Hunger Force, and with Brendan Small, co-created the Adult Swim hit Metalocalypse! We also make some bad jokes and bring up religion and thinking for yourself as we consider the theme of both beer names this week. Derek Warren’s popular How to Pair Beer with Everything column on nepascene.com is now a podcast! Joined by NEPA Scene founder and editor Rich Howells, they’ll try a different brew each week and examine it through all the senses, diving into personal experiences and opinions, pop culture, news, or whatever comes to mind. While Derek is an experienced beer reviewer and aficionado (and co-host of the Beer Geeks Radio Hour on WILK 103.1 FM), Rich is more of a casual craft beer drinker (and co-host of the NEPA Scene Podcast), so they’ll both offer their own uncensored perspectives and ask guests to share their own.
