Enterprise Ireland and the National Cyber Security Centre today launched the Cyber Security Review Grant which will assist SMEs to take steps to review and update their online security measures to mitigate against the risk of cyber-attacks. The grant will be administered by Enterprise Ireland, in collaboration with the National Cyber Security Centre. It will provide Enterprise Ireland clients with access to cyber security experts who will conduct an initial independent review of the company's cyber security status, identify vulnerabilities, and develop a clear roadmap for the business to enhance their security measures. The Cyber Security Review Grant is being made available from €85 million in funds that have been allocated to the Department of Enterprise Trade and Employment through the European Union's NextGenerationEU funding instrument for supporting the digital transformation of enterprise as part of Ireland's National Recovery and Resilience Plan. This funding is being channelled into: • The Digital Transition Fund for the establishment of a digital portal and to provide for direct to company supports. • Four European Digital Innovation Hubs with the aim of helping companies (notably SMEs) access research infrastructure, technical expertise and experimentation in order that these organisations can 'test before invest'. A suite of digital supports for enterprise is already available under the Digital Transition Fund through Enterprise Ireland, IDA and Údarás na Gaeltachta and the Cyber Security Review Grant launched today expands on the digital supports available from Enterprise Ireland to its clients under this Fund. Businesses that avail of the Cyber Security Review will receive consultancy from a qualified, external cyber security expert who will investigate current company practices and review the technical implementation of both on-site and cloud software. A detailed report in line with National Cyber Security Centre's best practise will then be delivered, outlining actionable steps to improve the company's cyber security position. Speaking at the launch Minister of State for Trade Promotion, Digital and Company Regulation Dara Calleary TD said: "Irish businesses are increasingly using AI and advanced digital tools to achieve success in international markets. Ensuring the security of the data used in these tools is a crucial foundation for this success. This new cyber security grant will ensure that Irish businesses who embrace digitalisation to strengthen and grow their business can do so with total confidence in their online security." Minister of State for Business, Employment and Retail Emer Higgins TD said: "Irish businesses are leading the way and setting the standard for digital transformation across all sectors. They understand the value of enhancing their digital security. I am delighted that the Cyber Security Grant will provide support with the essential first steps towards achieving international best practices in cyber security, an increasingly important factor when competing for business on a global stage." Minister of State with responsibility for Public Procurement, eGovernment and Circular Economy Ossian Smyth TD said: "DECC's Statement of Strategy, Le Chéile 25, sets an ambitious objective to realise a vibrant and expert cyber security industry in Ireland. The collaboration of the NCSC with Enterprise Ireland to deliver this first-of-its-kind grant scheme represents a key milestone in Le Chéile 25 and in the National Cyber Security Strategy 2019-2024." Anne Lanigan, Divisional Manager, Technology Services, Enterprise Ireland, said: "Leveraging digital tools can significantly enhance your company's capabilities. However, it is crucial to invest in protecting sensitive information and mitigating the risk of cyber-attacks. This is especially important as recent advancements in AI have made smaller businesses more attractive targets for malicious actors. The Cyber Security Review aims to help busine...

EPISODE SUMMARY In this episode of Chan with a Plan, Max Speaks with Jen Braganza, VP of Global Head of Business Transformation & Technology Services. During this conversation Jen discusses transition careers, getting promoted, and networking with influential people. QUOTES FROM JEN “The job description is not always the best indicator of what it actually takes to get into that role. That's probably the first mistake that I see people make because if you're relying on the job description, you're basically reading the bare minimums of the role” “If you are networking, it helps to actually know people who are going to be on the team that you're going to be part of, because they already have the ear of the director that you might be trying to get a manager level role from.” “You want to have a growth mindset, which is once you've hit really good at what you do, it's time to pass the baton to somebody else so that you can stretch out your arm and get the next baton.” TIMESTAMPS 0:00 | Introduction and Background 2:27 | Jen's backstory 4:31 | Mistakes stopping you from moving up 13:59 | Common misconceptions 22:57 | Influencing people 27:51 | Promotions 34:43 | Preparing for the opportunity 41:18 | Getting rejected from a promotion opportunity 46:26 | Jen's one big obstacle she overcame 47:53 | Closing RESOURCES & RELEVANT LINKS Jen Braganza on Social Media:Linkedin Chan With A Plan Max Chan on Social Media
Show Notes Show Title: Tech as a tool for supporting teachers with Jessica Preisig Show Description:Talking about technology in education elicits a range of responses from enthusiastic embraces to gag reflexes, and on either end of the spectrum technology can be problematic. However, with some mindful planning and intention, technology can be a powerful took in helping you to facilitate teacher growth. Today's wonderful guest is going to help us look at the role of technology being a partner for teacher growth. Guest BioJessica Preisig serves as the Assistant Superintendent for Technology Services in the School District of Pickens County. During her 20 years as an educator, Jessica has served as a classroom teacher, instructional technology coach, school administrator and district leader. Jessica earned her initial undergraduate and master's degrees from the University of South Carolina prior to moving to upstate South Carolina, where she obtained an EdS in Administration and Supervision from Clemson University – where I might had she had some amazing professors(!) – and she is now back at Clemson working on her doctorate. Quotes Jessica· “Every time technology is working it's a celebration!”· “I got to see k-12 education with teachers through all the levels.”· “The way I approached evaluation was more as a growth opportunity.”· “Intentionally integrate instructional technology that teachers would use in their classrooms, in out instructional work with teachers.”· “People hear what they want to hear.”· “When you can link to the things they want to learn, they are more receptive to feedback.” Frederick· “How do we provide resources to teachers that help them have agency over their own learning?”· “We sometimes miss opportunities to piggy back onto that [formal evaluation] and ask, ‘How do we want to grow?'”· “Because you were asking the questions, you were listening.”· “You can feel like the processes are confining you, but you can leverage them.”· “If I know you are here to help me get better in the ways I want to get better, then I'm invested.” SummarizingAs we wrap up, I have two important questions for you. First, what part of your own leadership are you still trying to get better at? If listeners could take just one thing away from today's podcast, what would it be? Before we go, is there anything else that you'd like to share with our listeners? Show Outro As the one big takeaway, Jessica pointed to “leaning in and walking beside people.” And if you think back to what you have heard throughout the episode, that was the constant theme. In a sense, this episode wasn't about technology – it was about partnering with teachers and helping the grow. The technology is simply a tool to help us do that. I hope you'll reflect more on that today and think critically about how technology can help you support and grow your teachers. Thanks for walking your leadership journey with me. Shortly after graduating from college, Jim Millican went to work for a small IT service provider in a sales and marketing position. In that job, he found that working on the technology was way more fun than selling it. And he struck out on his own. People start businesses because they don't know any better. Jim was no different. In 1994 he founded Ashton Technology Solutions. He has grown the business that started as one guy billing time into a professional team of engineers who work with clients to implement technology solutions to help them grow their businesses. Ashton Technology Solutions is a 25-year testament to Jim's commitment to building a company culture that puts the customer first. He'll be the first to tell you, it's not about the technology, it's about the people. Ashton makes technology work for people. One of the core values of the company is ”humble” which means that it is not about me, it is always about we. That value applies to the team environment at the office and how Ashton serves clients. By nature, Jim is a problem solver and derives a great deal of pleasure from developing elegant solutions to complex problems. Because the business offers him not only the chance to solve technological problems, but business problems, Jim is always eager to jump in to help. 1501 - Complex Technology Services with Msys Technologies' Sanjay Sehgal
In this episode of The New CISO, Steve is joined by guest Jeff Farinich, SVP of Technology Services and CISO at New American Funding.First starting his career as a general contractor, Jeff now prides himself on solving security problems. Today, Jeff shares how he makes career decisions and manages his organization's risks. Listen to the episode to learn more about Jeff's extensive career journey, his development relationship with vendors, and how CISOs take on a great deal of personal risk.Listen to Steve and Jeff discuss the right time to leave a company and the personal and monetary cost of a breach:Meet Jeff (1:45)Host Steve Moore introduces our guest today, Jeff Farinich. In his early twenties, Jeff studied accounting but realized it wasn't for him. He then became a general contractor, but by his mid-twenties, he was still determining what he wanted to do. He soon took a course that kickstarted his IT career, putting him on the path to becoming a CISO.Adjusting To The Job (4:20)When Jeff started his first IT job, he was excited by the change of direction. However, Jeff realized he always dabbled in tech because even at his first accounting job, he helped manage PCs.Multiple Paths (6:28)Jeff reflects on his job at a large property management company and his position as an MS manager at a small movie studio. He soon began his path into security management and leadership. Through the movie studio, he also went to the premiere of a Jean-Claude Van Damme movie.Advice To His Younger Self (10:45)If Jeff could give his younger self advice, he would suggest getting as much tech experience as possible on the VAR side. He also would have stayed in Silicon Valley longer, possibly having an even more explosive career.A MacGyver Type (15:38)Steve presses Jeff on whether he would ever consider stepping away from the technical side of security to get on the strategy/VAR side.Jeff is very open but also likes to fix things. He refers to himself as a MacGyver type “born with a screwdriver in hand.”A Development Relationship (19:30)Jeff enjoys having a development partnership with partners by trying new, untested tech at a low cost. This type of relationship allows both parties to win and allows Jeff to be creative and drive innovation for that vendor.Evaluating Vendors (22:13)There are fewer IT vendors than security vendors, so there have been fewer decisions for Jeff to make. Evaluating vendors to work with is a process and can leave room for great, collaborative relationships.A Small Step (27:35)Before jumping into vendor development, Jeff recommends understanding the industry and being knowledgeable about the vendor space you're interested in. If you are someone who doesn't always want to contact your VAR but doesn't know where to start, it's essential to begin by learning and choosing carefully.Moving Up and Out (32:59)Steve presses Jeff on clarifying his belief that “the best way to move up is to move out.”Jeff is far from a job hopper, but if you wait to the point where you are desperate to leave your company, you probably should have left sooner. If you are not fixing the problems you want to repair, or there are a lot of risks, it's valid to seek new opportunities.Managing Liability (34:51)CISOs always need to evaluate how much risk they are taking on. Whether you are an officer or director, you should realize that liability can reach you. Jeff has pushed for ways for CISOs not to be personally liable for breaches.Individual Risk...
