Yes.. Anything goes August goes out with a tap. Buckaroo Banzai is a half-American, half-Japanese brain surgeon, rock star, crime-fighting ninja who has perfected inter-dimensional travel with his invention of the mighty over-thruster. Buckaroo and his crew/band (The Hong Kong Cavaliers) must stop aliens, that are trapped in the 8th dimension, from taking over Earth. None of that is hyperbole. Its the movie. Justin doesn't get it and Justin hates it. And when Justin hates it, he gets angry. Enjoy!
Recorded on the day Joe Biden decided to drop out of the presidential race, Sarah & Joe take a pretty unhinged tact in attempting to discuss the cult classic film pitting Buckaroo Banzai and the Hong Kong Cavaliers against Dr. Emilio Lizardo aka John Whorfin and his gang of aliens! Kamala Harris's chances as the potential first female president, the greatness of Ellen Barkin, Donald Bigbooté, rankings of all significant northeast Pennsylvania figures, the future Joe Biden Presidential Library, lamenting the Buckaroo Banzai sequel that never was, Perfect Tommy, Liz Cheney, the Syracuse University history department, and much more fills this wild evening's show. Listen as a pizza is made live on tape!
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

It's a typical day in the life of Dr. Buckaroo Banzai; having completed a particularly tricky brain surgery and successfully piloted his Jetcar to test the "Oscillation Overthruster", a device he designed that allows objects to pass through solid matter, he finds himself drawn into an intergalactic conflict between warring alien species, the Red and Black Lectroids. With his nemesis Dr Emilio Lizardo having broken free from the Trenton Home for the Criminally Insane hellbent on securing the Overthruster for himself and the world on the brink of nuclear war, Banzai and his band The Hong Kong Cavaliers must uncover the truth behind what happened in Grover's Mill, New Jersey on October 30, 1938 whilst also protecting the suicidal identical twin sister of his late wife. A 1984 B-movie homage starring a relatively unknown Peter Weller, narratively this is a mess and its hyper nerdiness means it could only ever have a niche following despite its towering $17m budget. And where exactly did all that money go? It certainly wasn't on the sets, lighting, camera, special effects or audio, though Sidey does have a theory. Barely establishing a cultural footprint despite the array of top 80's talent involved including John Lithgow, Christopher Lloyd, Ellen Barkin, Jeff Goldblum, Clancy Brown and Vincent Schiavelli, this is a real curio. Hard to recommend exactly but worth checking out if you're a fan of cult cinema.

Buckaroo Bonzai, a rockstar, a surgeon, and all around nice guy leads the Hong Kong Cavaliers into battle. Is this a weird movie? I don't know - Christopher Lloyd fights rasta-aliens who arrive in a giant space coconut while Robocop actor (Peter Weller) and a cowboy-clad Jeff Goldblum run around trying to heal an inter-dimensional rift. Does that help? This episode features James Hauser, Curt Mummer, Ryan Farrell and Charles Huyett. Sci-Fi and Fantasy author Zig Zag Claybourne joins Madame Perry in celebrating one of their absolute favorite films in this Buckaroo Banzai Tribute Special. Released in August of 1984, the film which was directed by W. D. Richter with screenplay by Earl Mac Rauch, became a cult sensation largely due to its remarkable cast with included Peter Weller, Billy Vera, Clancy Brown, Christopher Lloyed, Ellen Barkin, John Lithgow and more. Buckaroo Banzai is caught with his trusted allies, the Hong Kong Cavaliers, in a battle to the death between evil red aliens and good black aliens from Planet 10. Led by demonic dictator John Whorfin, who has taken over the body of Italian scientist Dr. Emilio Lizardo, the aliens try to get the Overthruster back from Buckaroo Banzai. But the good black aliens are willing to destroy Earth rather than let these renegades return to their planet.

This week we tackle the beloved Buckaroo Banzai on The Cult of Matt and Mark. Unarmed with its plentiful quotes and sound drops, Matt feels we may have let the fanboys down on this one. Mark however takes a more measured and less apologetic approach. Just because Banzai might not occupy your childhood nostalgia, does not mean this fecund space farce's Tolkien-esque mythology cannot be respected and enjoyed. So monkey boys, head into the way-back machine and enjoy the 80's pop-rock stylings of the Hong Kong Cavaliers.Download: 148 Buckaroo Banzai

Jamie and Doug finally score tickets to a sold out Buckaroo Banzai and the Hong Kong Cavaliers show at a small club in New Jersey. After a suicide/murder attempt (and only 2 songs) the show is cancelled and they are given tickets to an upcoming show. Sadly, that show is cancelled because Jamie's favorite member of the band, keyboardist Rawhide was killed by an alien spider. Don't tell me you've seen everything if you haven't seen this king of cult films. Buckaroo Banzai is a brain surgeon, a rock star and an interdimensional hero! He leads a ragtag group of misfits called the Hong Kong Cavaliers who task themselves with saving Earth from doom at the hands of aliens from the 8th dimension. If this sounds weird, it is. 'Buckaroo Banzai' was a commercial flop when released, but has since developed a formidable fan base. It even caught the attention of Wes Anderson, who paid tribute to the end credits sequence in his ending for 'The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou.' The film is a favorite of Drew, a new guest who joins the discussion. He sings the praises of this cult film, but Andrew has harsher words to direct to this polarizing, oddball excursion. Tune in and listen to the sparks fly! You can download the podcast here by right-clicking on the hypertext link and choosing "save as", or you can use the convenient player attached to this post.
