Self Publishing School : Learn How To Write A Book And Grow Your Business
Today, I have the pleasure of speaking with Rory Vaden. Rory’s first book, Take the Stairs, is a bestseller that has been translated into 11 languages. Rory Vaden writes and speaks about the key to building a rock-solid reputation and how to achieve success by doing the right thing. He is passionate about helping others build their personal brands with Brand Builders Group. Brand Builders Group is the world’s leader in the Reputation Strategy study, with the mission to help every person identify their voice, tell their story, and share their unique message. BBG is one of the only true Personal Brand Strategy Firms. Co-founded with his wife AJ Vaden, Brand Builders Group helps people become the type of person they want to do business with. “The book conversation is the #1 accelerator of credibility in the world.” Rory self-published before he traditionally published. “The question is not whether I should do a book or not because the answer to that is always ‘yes.’” Rory notes that the New York Times isn’t looking for the once and done author when speaking about getting on the bestseller list. To achieve this status, you must be a cereal author and show an established track record. “What you really want is the real bestseller - the long-tail, perennial bestseller.” Selling hundreds and thousands of copies over the years is more useful to business and brand success. Authors have numerous challenges when writing a book. “Authors struggle the most with telling people what their book is about in one sentence. If you can’t explain the message of your book in one sentence, then you have more thinking to do.” Listen in to find out what is the common factor among the best sold books in the world, the hardest challenge when writing a book, and why you should build your personal brand before you write your book. Show Notes [02:27] Why Rory chose self-publishing before traditional publishing. [05:28] His marketing launch process which landed him his first best-seller. [07:15] What authors struggle with the most before their book is published. [10:15] How Rory and his wife started Brand Builders Group. [12:22] Why personal branding should come before creating a book. [15:20] The six components of Rory’s Brand DNA. [21:22] Why there’s not a right way to do it, but a right way to do it for you. [24:53] Why building a personal brand matters and why your brand drives sales. If you’ve ever wondered how to start a blog from zero, you’re not gonna want to miss today’s episode. I’m so excited to have Rory Balkin on the podcast because she’s sharing some fantastic advice about how to a niche that you’re super passionate about, start from zero, and turn it into a profitable side hustle. Rory Balkin is a self-proclaimed donut enthusiast and founder of Donut Digest. I’m not entirely sure how Rory and I connected - but considering that she’s from Texas I can only think that it has to be through the Thrive conference that I’ve spoken at a couple of times. Which, by the way, if you’re a blogger or you’re thinking about blogging, you need to put this conference on your radar - it’s happening in Houston in April of 2020, and you can go to https://thrivetogether.blog/ and get on the email list to make sure you’re first to know when tickets go on sale because it’s an amazing conference. Anyway, I started to connect with Rory on a deeper level when she joined my free 5 Day Freebie Challenge so that she could create a shareworthy freebie to help her grow her email list - which you’ll find out during our interview why having an email list for her niche donut blog is so, so important. So let’s dive into my interview with Rory Balkin all about how to build and monetize a niche food blog. Today we’re talking about: Why Rory started a blog about donuts and how she built an audience from scratch. Rory’s tactics for getting traction on Instagram. Why Rory created the Dallas Donutfest, and the exact steps she and her partner took to bring it from idea to life. How to build buzz + excitement for anything that you’re about to launch. Why connecting with your audience consistently is so important! How Rory monetized her love of donuts beyond blogging and the food festival. Her best strategy for being more productive. How Rory manages a newborn, a day job a blog and the donut festival. Rory’s advice for someone who is thinking about starting a blog. The belief Rory had to change about herself to get where she is today. My favorite quotes from Rory: “I want to make something of this business, and you really have to connect with people in real life, have that human connection, to make something of it!” On starting her blog: “I don’t know what I’m doing, I just love donuts!” “Relationships are super important.” “I always want to help people.” “It’s all about pulling out the unique and interesting stories from each place.” “You learn as you go.” “You just have to start, learn from those that are a little bit ahead of you, and then start to build those connections to forge those partnerships, create those events, whatever it is that can grow your following.” “You’re not alone if you get stuck somewhere.” “There are risks in business every single day. You have to put yourself out of your comfort zone.” Resources mentioned in this episode: Trello Butler County Donut Trail Free email course on "5 Ways to Attract More Customers to Your Shop” Donut Digest Website: https://www.donutdigest.com/ Dallas Donut Fest: www.dallasdonutfest.com Bio: Rory is a self-proclaimed donut enthusiast and founder of Donut Digest. Rory Sutherland is one of the most admired and influential intellects in advertising. He is also one of the most interesting and witty people I've had the privilege talking to. Rory is Vice Chairman of Ogilvy and Mather group and co-founder of Ogilvy Change, a behavioral science practice were he co-heads a team of psychology graduates who look for "butterfly effects" in consumer behavior - these are the very small contextual changes which can have enormous effects on the decisions people make. Rory has spoken at TED Global and has 3 Ted Talks related to behavioral economics; the popularity of one (Lessons From an Ad Man) even influenced UK Conservative Party policy in 2009 related to speed camera funding (see the TedTalk). If you're not familiar with behavioral economics, it is the study of the effects of psychology on economic decisions. Rory says advertising can add value to a product, service or "thing" by changing our perception, rather than changing the said product/service/thing itself. He believes marketing and advertising are part and parcel to the actual functioning of markets - and changing perceived value can be just as satisfying as what we consider “real” value. This and more is our discussion thread on podcast. I learn his take on psychology in advertising, his view of brands, the work of Ogilvy Change, and how behavioral insights can be also be applied to ourselves. If you're a student of human behavior or just a marketing nerd like I am, you will enjoy this show. Topics covered How the ad industry changed on the 70's How Rory defines advertising / how it really works Amazon and brands How our choices are influenced The value of attention The book that influenced a country Advertising in nature The power of creativity Advertising alchemy, creating value out of nowhere How we market to ourselves Enjoy!
