For additional notes and resources check out Douglas’ website.ESCAPE, Lesson 1 of 4: Douglas Jacoby and Steve Brand have joined forces to teach a series called ESCAPE. Steve Brand is a professional counselor and expert on addictive behaviors. The series explores addictive substances and behaviors and what God's word has to say about them. There are four lessons in the series. Here's the provisional plan:The psychology and neurochemistry of pain, escape, and addiction. Focus: marijuana, alcohol, pain medication.Alternate fictional reality. Focus: movies, novels, worlds of gaming, TV.Fantasy proxy relationships. Focus: pornography.Computer and internet behaviors. Focus: gambling, shopping, surfing, smartphones. The series tackles the importance of not being conformed to the world (Romans 12:2), or falling prey to the many tempting avenues of "escape."Addendum 1 (from Sept/Oct 2014 issue of Does God Exist?, used with the permission of John Clayton):POT LEGALIZATION. One of the most dramatic changes in American social views is the new attitude towards marijuana. At the time of this article 21 states and the District of Columbia sanction medical marijuana. Colorado and Washington have now legalized recreational marijuana. There are wild claims made by both the supporters and detractors of marijuana, but in the June 14, 2014, issue of Science News some basic facts are listed (page 17). Marijuana affects the amygdala of the brain, causing altered emotional states. (The amygdala performs a primary role in processing memory, decision-making, and emotional reactions.) Marijuana reduces motor activity in the basal ganglia, an area of the brain which is associated with voluntary motor movements, eye movements, procedural learning, and cognition. Marijuana also affects the brain's cerebellum, causing impaired coordination. It alters cortex thinking, making it hard to pay attention or switch quickly between two tasks. Another part of the brain affected by marijuana is an area critical to short-term and long-term memory, the hippocampus. This makes memory less efficient, making it harder to learn and remember new information. The hypothalamus, which controls hunger, among other things, is stimulated by marijuana, increasing appetite and creating the “munchies” effect. It also targets the nucleus accumbens, which plays an important role in pleasure, causing the pot user to want to use it again. In spite of claims to the contrary, marijuana can be addictive. Ten percent of users become dependent. We are reminded of the need to take care of the temple of God (1 Corinthians 3:16). Source: Science News, June 14, 2014, pages 17.Addendum 2 (based on frequent questions submitted to this website): If everything God created is good, including the plants (Genesis 1), then why can't we enjoy marijuana? The many plants that the Lord created include the poisonous as well as the health-giving. Of course, everything God created is good. How about lava? Common sense dictates that we keep our distance from some things.

Coach MK and Coach Sarah host question and answer livestreams each week on the Fitness Protection Program Facebook Page, The Fitness Protection Program YouTube Channel, and Twitch, simultaneously. This week, Coach Sarah answers questions about running with high blood pressure, the importance of the hip hinge, and the debut of Fitness Protection's Slow Burn program in 2020! Hi, this is Coach Sarah! Before we begin, you’ll note that several of the questions tonight are about Fitness Protection’s Slow Burn strength program for runners, which begins on January 6th, 2020. By the time this episode drops in our podcast feed, the January session of Slow Burn will be closed for registration. But don’t worry, we will be offering it again in February and at least twice more later in the year, and we will be opening registration for those sessions in early 2020. Final note, we are still offering coupons for Slow Burn through our Holiday Strength challenge program - they can be applied to any 2020 session of Slow Burn and they will be the ONLY coupons we offer on this terrific program. All you have to do is donate between $20 and $45 to Play University, which serves kids in the Milwaukee area facing transportation scarcity, or The Blue Bench, which provides support to sexual assault survivors in the Denver area. You can also split your donations between the two charities. Email your receipts to info@fitnessprotection.com and we’ll follow up with your coupon code. We hope to have you join us to get strong AF in Slow Burn next year! On that note, congratulations to the WINNERS of the Quadzilla challenge! Every single one of you gets a prize from us, so watch your e-mail for details! Runner, Interrupted Another quiet week for our #RunnersInterrupted (we GET it) but we want to send a LOT of love to Mary Lenczewski, who is undergoing major abdominal surgery this week and deserves ALL the love and support! ReBuild (8:00) So my blood pressure has suddenly gotten into the high end of the hypertensive range (when it was normal at a doc visit in October). What do I need to know about running with high blood pressure? I thought I had more time before family history kicked in, and I’m still hoping it’s something acute and fixable. So far they’ve cleared me for normal work and activity as well as a low dose BP med. Hi coaches, the hip hinge blog post was super helpful thank you (https://www.coachedandloved.com/post/the-rebuild-opportunity). Is there a video you can point me to so I can see it? (YES, Coach MK demonstrated it for ReBuild back in June! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UQaTpB3pseg&=&t=5s) Maintain (12:30) Shoutout to Sara Seeburg and Becky Horn, who ran the Scottsdale Half Marathon and both had amazing races! I have big plans for 3DATF in May. I am signed up for the 48hr event, hoping to do more than 100 miles. I signed up for Slow Burn early for the discount but had planned to wait (I did Beta in Sept/Oct). I heard MK recommend that we do Slow Burn in January if we are planning big things for 3DATF. Should I go ahead and mentally prepare myself for Slow Burn in January? Thanks!!! What equipment/gear will be mandatory for Slow Burn vs nice to have? Another Slow Burn question: what should we plan to do Jan 1-5? Follow the Maintain January plan until Slow Burn starts?

Josh describes the philosophical framework, first articulated by Aristotle, called teleology. This framework looks at the nature of a thing, and from that nature derives a purpose; that purpose then becomes the measurement of goodness (or badness). A thing is good to the extent that it achieves the given purpose. This paradigm could be helpful for those preparing for the Sept/Oct 2019 Varsity LD Resolution (In the United States, colleges and universities ought not consider standardized tests in undergraduate admissions decisions) by considering the purpose of collegiate education and/or the purpose of standardized tests. For Sept/Oct 2019, the NSDA LD resolution reads, "In the United States, colleges and universities ought not consider standardized tests in undergraduate admissions decisions." In this episode, Josh and Ethan discuss two changes that came out in the first week of September that have direct bearing on the arguments for this resolution: The College Board announced it will not deploy the Adversity Score system. Instead, they will use a new program called Landscape. Also, the NYC public school system announced a major change in their admissions procedure for arts-oriented schools - no performance or proficiency requirements in the name of increasing equity. How will these changes effect LD? Listen and find out! Be sure to let us know how your arguments go! Josh interviews Thomas Starchia to get the college admissions perspective on the 2019 Sept/Oct LD resolution, "Resolved: In the United States, colleges and universities ought not consider standardized tests in undergraduate admissions decisions." Thomas worked for five years in the Liberty University Admission department. He explains what admissions officers are looking for in the application, outlines a psychological harm argument, and points to a potential disadvantage where the Affirmative side loses access to scholarships that are tied to standardized test scores. Should the EU join the Belt and Road Initiative? That's the question Josh and Ethan analyze in this episode. They focus on major studies, articles, and resources for both Pro and Con. Pro's case will be largely economic, while Con should focus on the human rights and values clash between the EU and Chinese Communist government under Xi Jinping. This episode was a lot of fun to put together - check it out, and let us know if our suggestions on"Resolved: The European Union should join the Belt and Road Initiative" worked! The Sept/Oct 2019 resolution for varsity LD reads, "In the United States, colleges and universities ought not consider standardized tests in undergraduate admissions decisions." In this episode, Josh and Ethan join forces to interview Ms. Courtney van Kleeck, the college admissions counselor for Thales Academy Rolesville. Courtney has helped four classes of Thales graduates get into college, and she lends us her expertise on what colleges are looking for in the application, how the standardized test fits into the picture, and why she thinks the SAT/ACT reinforces harmful stereotypes with impressionable students. Question 1: From Amy: I've been using a piece of vegetable tanned leather with green waxy honing compound as a strop. I start by rubbing compound onto the shiny side of the leather. However, when I go to strop my carving knives, the pressure from my blade compresses the compound and it flakes off. Is there something wrong with my compound, or am I doing something wrong? Question 2: From Matt: I have some 10-in. wide 8/4 African Mahogany that I have been resawing into thinner boards. I start by jointing one face then one edge and then resawing, usually down the middle. There is a good amount of tension in the boards, so after resawing they have a decent twist. Do I need to let the boards re-acclimate before I re-joint and plane them, or can I do that immediately? Also, would I be better off not jointing the face and resawing to a center-line rather than using the bandsaw fence. It seems like a waste of time getting that face flat just so I can use the bandsaw fence. All Time Favorite Technique Bob: Fixing a mistake and perfectly matching both the face grain and end grain. When is it acceptable to only apply glue to one surface of a mating joint? Question 4: From Anthony: Last couple years I’ve been on the hunt for an 8” jointer and just recently I was able to secure a CL purchase on a 12” jointer that I’m pretty excited about. It’s a Bridgewood 12” 5hp that I picked up a few hours away from a now retired door maker. As with most home woodworkers, my jointing experience has been on a six inch jointer. What are the potential areas of concern with a larger jointer? In general, with a jointer, what leads up to an accident? Is it simply being unaware of your hands and proper use?
