Completing our foray into advertising, mostly using Antony's talk on Julian Charles's excellent podcast ‘The Mind Renewed' back in 2015, we dive deeper into Edward Bernays's work and then segue into the darker underbelly of the craft, including the engineering of a military coup and the truly egregious and unethical snaring of innocent hearts and minds involved in advertising to children. On a lighter note we mention a few points made in Neil Sanders's very entertaining presentation called ‘The Art of Creating Reality' (see show notes). From there we talk about an excellent short video called ‘Your Lifestyle Has Already Been Designed' (see show notes again) and how we have been trapped into a certain way of life. There are a few words from Antony at the end of the talk on this subject, and Antony and Julian offer some advice for combatting the controlling force of advertising. See you on the other side for another episode soon We hope you enjoy the show! If so, please subscribe, like, share etc... When Scottish actor Alan Cumming read the script for the Canadian movie “Drive Back Home,” he really connected to the character of Perley, a New Brunswick-born ad man living in Toronto in the 1970s. Despite the obvious differences, the character, like Alan, was abused by his father when he showed early signs of his queerness. Alan joins Tom Power to chat about what it's like to act out scenes so close to home, in a land very far from his own.

The FDA Group's Nick Capman sits down with Adam Foresman, Head of Quality & Regulatory Affairs at VideaHealth, to explore the intersection of AI, machine learning, and diagnostics within the FDA's regulatory environment. Adam brings over 15 years of experience in medical device design, quality management systems, and regulatory affairs, with a recent focus on AI in the dental diagnostic market. Discussion points include: The Regulatory Landscape for AI in Dental Diagnostics: Adam shares his insights on how AI and ML are becoming integral in dental diagnostics, aiding in identifying previously missed detections, enhancing patient education, and streamlining administrative tasks. He highlights that early adopters in healthcare and dental organizations are reporting significant benefits from AI, encouraging broader adoption. FDA Clearance for Pediatric AI Applications: Adam sheds light on VideaHealth's recent 510(k) clearance for a dental AI application for pediatric patients. he offers pointers for successful software as a medical device (SaMD) submissions, emphasizing the importance of Q-submissions, thorough software documentation, and specific considerations for pediatric applications. Predetermined Change Control Plans (PCCPs): Adam explains the concept of PCCPs, allowing manufacturers to include future design changes in pre-market submissions, potentially avoiding re-submissions. While he sees broader applications outside of AI, he notes the challenges AI manufacturers face in predicting future design changes accurately. Comparative Regulatory Approaches — US vs. EU: Adam compares regulatory frameworks between the US and the EU, noting that while both aim to ensure clinical benefits outweigh risks, their methodologies differ. He praises the EU's focus on post-market surveillance and risk management processes, suggesting the FDA could benefit from similar approaches. AI Transparency and Bias Considerations: With growing concerns about AI transparency and bias, Adman discusses the FDA's recent emphasis on these issues. He advocates for clear communication of AI test results by subgroups and suggests that the FDA might develop more detailed transparency guidelines in the future. Role of Regulatory Affairs Professionals: Adam encourages regulatory professionals to promote AI understandability and transparency within design teams, ensuring that patient and clinician perspectives are considered in AI development. Future Trends and Recommendations: Adam predicts an increase in AI submissions that bundle multiple models, urging adherence to FDA guidelines for such complex submissions. He also emphasizes the importance of engaging with regulatory bodies early in the design process and maintaining robust QMS processes. At the time of recording, Tim was knee-deep in building works at home, so I polished up my Chelsea boots for a visit to his London studio. As always, I asked him to describe his life story through the lens of the homes he's lived in over the years. It was particularly interesting to find out more about his current home, which he bought after seeing it on our website and falling instantly in love. It's a mid-century masterpiece set in splendid isolation near Rye, in East Sussex. A celebration of craftsmanship comes through in everything that Tim is about. His father was a textile manufacturer, and he's inherited a fascination with how things are made and the excitement of seeing something take shape on the factory floor. He tells me about his background in advertising, when he was given the most thrilling brief of all time: ‘Make Adidas cool again'. Having been given the keys to one of the world's most established brands, he was inspired to start his eponymous footwear company and ultimately take over Grenson.Tim is a lovely guy – very humble and grounded – and I really enjoyed getting to know him through the course of this conversation. This episode was recorded in person at the Grenson Studio in Chelsea. For more:Visit The Modern House website to see images of the spaces discussed in this episode.Check out Grenson.Production: Hannah PhillipsEditing: Oscar CrawfordGraphic Design: Tom YoungMusic: FatherThis episode was sponsored by Vitsoe. My guest this week on Up In Your Business is the radio voice and host of Swingin' Down The Lane, Mr. David Miller. Though David's show is very successful and syndicated in over 40 markets and two countries, his career didn't start in radio. David grew up in New Jersey, loving the music of the big band era. But that is as far as he thought his love would go. It wasn't until I interviewed Mr. Miller that I learned that, as a young man, he was a sought-after Adman, studying and analyzing social trends for big-time fortune 500 company's marketing departments. David's corporate career was vast and led him and his family to move five times, living in five different states. But it was a chance meeting that would change his life forever.
This episode is a collaboration with brand agency 2050 London. It take exerts from a conversation with Matt Cooper Ad industry veteran and founder of Little Black Book Online. Jeremy Bowditch is many things: Neighborhood Council Member in Los Angeles, Lakers fan, wine snob. When Gloria took a waitressing job in a diner outside of Phoenix, she didn't realize she was now an employee of Midnight Burger, a time-traveling, dimension-spanning diner. Every day Midnight Burger appears somewhere new in the cosmos along with its staff: a galactic drifter, a rogue theoretical physicist, a sentient old-timey radio, and some guy named Caspar. No one knows who built Midnight Burger or how it works, but when it appears there's always someone around who could really use a cup of coffee. And this time…..the diner has found itself in a dystopian Earth where the ads are LITERALLY stuck in your head. That's right, it's the worst dystopia of all. No mohawks, no zombies, no improvised weaponry... just more ads!! Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
His name is Kyle Bornheimer, but you might know him as The 30-Second Man, as Adman on The Office, or maybe as Steve Martin if you knew him when he was little. Whatever you want to call him, he talks to Brian about his dreams of tap dancing, guest starring in almost all your favorite TV shows, and how he became a joke on BoJack Horseman without ever appearing on the show.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

If you're a regular listener to Truth Tastes Funny, you probably know that I started my career in NY on Madison Avenue after attending School of Visual Arts. Well, my guest John Follis is a Madison Ave adman who made waves before I ever dipped my toe in the ocean. John's campaign for Sorrell Ridge Fruit Spreads - citing their jam's all-natural ingredients - knocked Smuckers for a loop (maybe it was the tagline, "With 100% fruit, it has to be better."). The ad was so effective it became a case taught at the Harvard Business School and featured in Forbes. In ‘93, Follis/DeVito/Verdi was the second most awarded agency in New York. That same year John formed Follis Inc to include a focus on non-traditional and online marketing. In 2003, in response to the shifting media landscape and to provide an alternative to the traditional ad agency model, he created "Follis Marketing Therapy". And, in 2006, John created "The Follis Marketing Report" blog and "The Marketing Show with John Follis" podcast syndicated on iTunes. John has always made time for public service and for one very successful public service campaign that he spearheaded, he was honored at The White House. As a result of John's career success he's been invited to write for ADWEEK and speak at venues including The World Business Academy and Yale University. Now for the funny part: John flunked out of his first college advertising class and was told by the instructor that he would never be successful in advertising.Find John:Wiki bio: https://en.everybodywiki.com/John_Follis”True Stories” series; https://bit.ly/3Kok4GJRecent article: https://bit.ly/3vr2ufthttps://follisinc.comIf you enjoyed listening to Truth Tastes Funny, please leave a 5-star rating and a 300-word review on Apple Podcasts (click Listen on Apple Podcasts to access review option)Check out Hersh's new podcast: YES, BRANDBoldly taking brands where they desperately wanna goFollow us on Instagram: @truthtastesfunnyFollow Hersh on Instagram: @Hersh4allon LinkedIn: HershRephunon YouTube: HershRephunon Twitter: @TruthTstsFunnyOur Website: TruthTastesFunnyContact UsExplore Branded Ventures with Truth Tastes Funny and Hersh's YES, BRAND Podcast
