The Herle Burly was created by Air Quotes Media with support from our presenting sponsor TELUS, as well as CN Rail.Alright, you curiouser and curiouser Herle Burly-ites! We assembled The Chiefs for a timely pod to discuss campaigning while governing! Typically with The Chiefs, we discuss issues from the perspective of people who think about them NOT as campaigners do, i.e. what might be ideal in a political sense, but rather, what's possible to deliver in a governing sense. But because these guys are 3 of the best political minds in the country, and we're right in the middle of Campaign 45, I want to change it up a bit. We'll spend about half our time today talking about how each of them would be advising the various campaigns given the current state of play. And then, for Part 2, I want to cover how they'd deal with managing a PMO or leader's office in a campaign like this one with actual news in it, i.e. Trump. How do you function juggling campaigning and daily governing in challenging times? What's the relationship with the bureaucracy? You know them, three former Chiefs of Staff to some of Canada's most accomplished heads of government:Ian Brodie – first Chief of Staff to Stephen Harper, and central to the founding of the CPC. Now … Professor of Political Science at the University of Calgary.Tim Murphy – former Chief of Staff to Paul Martin. Now ... the newly installed EVP and Chief Strategic Affairs Officer at AECON.Brian Topp – former Chief of Staff to Rachel Notley in Alberta, Deputy Chief to Roy Romanow in Saskatchewan, one of the architects of Jack Layton's Orange Wave. Now ... he's a founding partner at GT&co.Thank you for joining us on #TheHerleBurly podcast. This week, we're once again brining you the audio from one of our most recent event. This time it's from a webinar on Canada-U.S. relations that we held on March 5, 2025. The second Trump administration is turning into an unsettling roller-coaster ride, and Canadians can't seem to get off. Every day seems to bring a new set of goalposts, demands and threats. In this webinar moderated by IRPP president and CEO Jennifer Ditchburn, IRPP Board members Jean Charest, Janice Charette, Ian Brodie and Christopher Sands unpacked the challenges facing Canadian governments in these tumultuous times and discussed what it will take to build economic and social resilience for the long haul. A video version of the event is also available on our website at irpp.org

Host Kathleen Petty is joined by Ian Brodie, former chief of staff to Prime Minister Stephen Harper; Martha Hall Findlay, who ran against Justin Trudeau in the last Liberal party leadership race; and Corey Hogan from the Strategists podcast.

It's part of our identity here in Alberta to bicker with whomever is in the Prime Minister's office, especially if their last name is Trudeau. Stealing a sentiment from Ronald Reagan, the province's often fear the words; I'm from Ottawa and I'm here to help. But does Alberta's contentious relationship with Ottawa help or hurt us? I think they're unique conversations, with a level of experience and depth of thinking all-too rare these days in media. This series is one of my favourites… The Chiefs are back! Making their 5th appearance here on The Herle Burly, 3 former Chiefs of Staff to some of Canada's most accomplished heads of government.Ian Brodie – first Chief of Staff to Stephen Harper, and central to the founding of the CPC. And so today, 7 days after the federal budget and its suite of measures, we'll do a situation assessment of the government and all the parties. The Herle Burly was created by Air Quotes Media with support from our presenting sponsor TELUS, as well as CN Rail. We're debuting what's going to be semi-regular feature here on The Herle Burly, called “The Chiefs”. The Chiefs is a panel of 3 former Chiefs of Staffs to some of Canada's most accomplished heads of government. And by semi regular, I mean this, whenever there are important enough issues to dive into, and maybe more to the point, whenever we can get these 3 very smart, very busy people:Ian Brodie – first Chief of Staff to Stephen Harper, and central to the founding of the CPC. Now … Professor of Political Science at the University of Calgary.Tim Murphy – former Chief of Staff to Paul Martin … now CEO and Managing Partner at McMillan LLP.Brian Topp – former Chief of Staff to Rachel Notley in Alberta … Deputy Chief to Roy Romanow in Saskatchewan … and one of the architects of Jack Layton's Orange Wave, federally. Today, he's a founding partner at GT&co.Here's what “The Chiefs” is going to be about: It's a discussion of the major issues of the day from the unique and shared perspective of people who think about them NOT as campaigners do … i.e., what might be IDEAL in a political sense … BUT in the realm of what's actually POSSIBLE to DELIVER in a governing sense.Today, for our first ever Chiefs discussion, 2 topics: The Government's reliance on the consultant class, and more specifically, McKinsey. And in the wake of Bill Morneau's book, Prime Ministers and their relationships, or non-relationships, with their Cabinet Ministers.Thank you for joining us on #TheHerleBurly podcast. England have been singing the lament about football coming home for an age, but after the barren years of misery, it finally came through the door into the welcoming arms of an exultant Wembley as the Lionesses were crowned European champions. Today's Nick Robinson presented from Trafalgar Square in Central London, where thousands cheered the Lionesses on during Sunday night's match which saw England beat eight-time European champions Germany 2-1 after extra time. Nick spoke to the former England men's captain and Match of the Day host Gary Lineker, the former sports minister Tracey Crouch, and the head of the Football Association Mark Bullingham. He was also joined by the comedian David Baddiel, who along with Frank Skinner and Ian Brodie, wrote Three Lions which has become the definitive England anthem. The legacy media hasn't stopped criticizing Pierre Poilievre's promise to fire the Governor of the Bank of Canada. Journalists have labeled Poilievre's plans as “outrageous”, “irresponsible” and “reckless”. Even one of Poilievre's own caucus colleagues, Ed Fast, jumped on the media bandwagon to criticize his comments. But is Pierre Poilievre right about the Bank of Canada?Turns out, even the Bank of Canada admits that their policies have led to inflation and economic instability — the heart of Poilievre's critiques.Without skipping a beat or acknowledging they were wrong about inflation, the media has pivoted its critiques to the broader Conservative Party. The media is now questioning the party's membership numbers and criticizing the leadership candidates for even reporting their own numbers.Dr. Ian Brodie, the chair of the Leadership Election Organizing Committee and former Chief of Staff to Stephen Harper, joins Candice on the show today. They discuss how the party will handle the record 600,000+ members and how the leadership election will be managed. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
Attention is a currency, something we all spend on those who entertain us, and those who help solve our problems. In a cluttered, noise-filled world, getting your ideal client's attention focused on your content is difficult, creating content that will hold their attention even more so. In this episode, Ian Brodie and Alastair McDermott discuss how you can earn the attention of your ideal buyers, and how to incorporate humour in a way that is congruent with your personality and style. They also discuss what makes an effective lead magnet, how to inspire curiosity, and how fun is just another form of value. “I think we get into problems when we think in theory. Don't do it in abstract, think about your actual clients. If there might be some things you could do that would damage your credibility with a real client, don't do those. But put it into real context.” -- Ian Brodie “You need "long attention" if you're thinking about becoming an authority. People specifically paying attention to you and what you're saying, because that's going to increase your perceived expertise, build a relationship with them, they'll see you as the kind of expert they want to work with. ” -- Ian Brodie
Ian Brodie, founder of Course Builders Hub, demonstrates why you don't need an entrepreneurial background, a ton of experience or a perfect plan to be a successful business owner. Just jump into the journey with a desire to learn, grow and contribute.
What You'll Learn From This Episode: The 3 mistakes in online course Knowing "pre-sold, paid, pilot" course Why should you create an online course Related Links and Resources: Ian has written a book called "The Ultimate Guide to Creating an Online Course" which is available on Amazon. But you can get it completely FREE if you go to www.coursebuildershub.com/sbs. You can download there, and you can also get updates of any new episodes coming on course builders TV. There's lot of people there who has successfully build their course and are sharing their tips and ideas on what they did. So, you will learn for free from those who actually succeeded. Summary: Ian Brodie is the Founder of The Course Builders Hub, the online community where successful course builders share their insights, ideas and insider tips on creating and growing an online course. Here are the highlights of this episode: Ian helps those who wants to use or build an online course; either to supplement their face-to-face income or to fully replace that. Even perhaps those who wants to take it seriously as a scalable revenue stream and bring value to their clients. They help those who are stuck trying to create, launch, and market an online course and later on, grow it. He further said that everyone can do and succeed using this without being an expert or a social media guru. A lot of those Ian helps usually felt the frustration of these folks; either they are stuck and not able to create that course, or they already created it but not getting attraction with it. There are 3 mistakes in online course that he sees: first, people are building the wrong course. Most information is free on the internet, so if your course is just giving information, they'll just get it form YouTube. You need something that does something different. Secondly, if it's about providing information and skills, then it means we need to keep creating more and more content but most of us can't do that because we're not a big institution. Thirdly, if it's information and skills to use in the future or next step in your career, it's going to be difficult on the return on investment on that. One should create an 'outcome-focus' course which helps people solve an immediate problem that they have or achieve a goal that they really driving for. So, really narrow it down. Some creates a course before they even know there's a market for it. And it turns out no one wants to buy it. So, test the market first before you build a course. Online course is for people who sell their time for money like coaches, consultants, trainers, or people who offer their services. One of the easiest ways to transition to a business that's more scalable, gives you more free time & flexibility, is to turn what you know into an online course and deliver those. Ian's Valuable Free Action (VFA): The number one piece of advice that Ian would like to give you they you can do and helps you go fast is to do a "pre-sold, paid, pilot." Pilot is a strip-down version of your course that gets the result people are looking for, and it just does what's needed. If you do a paid pilot, if you charge for it or will give a discount, establish first if there's a market for it. And pre-sold, sell it to people after you write an outline on what's going to be on it, not after you created all the course. The most enthusiastic people are going to buy it if they can. If not enough people are going to buy it, don't create the content.
Find out how to go about a course you confidently believe you can make and shaped according to your market's needs Learn how to create an outcome-based course that helps people solve an immediate problem rather than people just acquiring more skills Discover how to make a course that is much quicker, easier for you to produce, much clearer return on investment of the person buying it and of which the course creators' brand name doesn't really matter Resources/Links: Check out this and get a FREE copy of Ian's book 'The Ultimate Guide to Creating an Online Course': https://www.coursebuildershub.com/MTI/ Summary Are you getting overwhelmed and confused about what to do first as you go through creating your online course? Is the course you created not having a market and not hitting the spot with anyone? Do you want to know how to create a course where someone surely wants it and buys it? Ian Brodie teaches consultants, coaches, and trainers how to successfully build and market online courses to add to or replace their in-person services. In this episode, Ian shares how to create a course with a ready market for it so you don't spend a ton of time, energy, and money running a course that's actually not going to sell. Check out these episode highlights: 01:32 - Ian's ideal client: "It's someone with expert knowledge who wants to build an online course to either add to or replace the income that they get from face-to-face services." 01:50 - The problem that Ian helps solve: "It's simply that I help people cut through the confusion and the overwhelm that they often find if they're thinking of creating an online course, and help them quickly and easily build a profitable course." 02:29 - Typical symptoms Ian's clients face: "They're struggling to get started. They're really overwhelmed by all the different technology options. Should I be making videos, green screens, all that kind of stuff, or they can't settle on a good topic for their course, or they get started, but they really get bogged down in creating tons and tons and tons of content, and they can never get it finished." 03:26 - Mistakes people commit before they find Ian's solution: "For small entrepreneurs, small businesses, trying to create courses, it's the wrong kind of course to produce. And the reason for that is, firstly, people who buy courses to get skills, want as many skills as possible. For whatever they bought, they want more and more and more and more, so you end up on this treadmill of producing more and more and more content to meet their needs." 07:03 - Ian's one Valuable Free Action (VFA): "For your pilot; do it live. Do a live Zoom; workshop for a couple of hours. It's a short course; it's a longer course to a series of little webinars, saves all the technology hassles, and you get immediate feedback on it. And it just makes you do it." 07:29 - Ian's Valuable Free Resource: Check out this and get a FREE copy of Ian's book 'The Ultimate Guide to Creating an Online Course': https://www.coursebuildershub.com/MTI/ 07:56 - Q: Is making an online course suitable for everyone because a lot of people talk about it as if it is, but it isn't really the big difference? A: The big thing to watch out for is a different style of working. A lot of consultants, coaches, trainers get a real boost from working live with clients, from getting feedback, but making a course is much more solitary, much more technology-dependent. You've got to know that you'll like it.
