In this episode, Mike looks at the Independent Investigation Office's (IIO's) response to the Clear Statement issued by the BC Prosecution Service (Crown Counsel) explaining its decision not to lay charges against an RCMP officer who shot at and injured a man who was driving a truck erratically  and struck police vehicles. The charges considered included attempted murder, aggravated assault/assault with a weapon, discharge a firearm with intent and reckless discharge of a firearm. In de EU is de ongelijkheid tussen mannen en vrouwen op de arbeidsmarkt enorm. Het Europarlement wil daarom maatregelen om de loonkloof van werkende vrouwen te beslechten, maar ook om huislijk geweld tegen vrouwen aan te pakken. Ook wil het Parlement dat het recht op abortus wordt nageleefd. Volgens Vera Tax (PvdA) is er nog veel werk aan de winkel. "Gelijkheid tussen mannen en vrouwen? Dat gaat nog zestig jaar duren, ook in Nederland. Dit is bizar en oneerlijk voor alle jonge meiden die nu opgroeien en denken dat de toekomst voor hen dezelfde kansen en mogelijkheden biedt als voor jongens." JA21 in het Europarlement is kritisch. Volgens JA21-Europarlementarieër Michiel Hoogeveen moet de EU haar lidstaten niets opdringen. "Elk land in de EU heeft zijn eigen culturele tradities. Het staat iedereen vrij om zijn of haar leven in te richten zoals zij dat kiezen. Een feministische superregering uit Brussel moet dat niet opleggen", aldus Hoogeveen, die alle vormen van discriminatie veroordeelt. Als het aan het Europees Parlement ligt, worden er meer gebouwen in de Europese Unie opgeknapt en energiezuinig gemaakt. Er komen maatregelen om gebouwen te renoveren en duurzaam te maken. Ook moet de bouwsector worden geholpen met het verkleinen van haar energie-uitstoot. Op deze manier wil het Europees Parlement meehelpen de opwarming van de Aarde tegen te gaan, maar ook de luchtkwaliteit in gebouwen te verbeteren. De Ierse christendemocraat Sean Kelly is verheugd over de aanname van het rapport door het Parlement. "Renovatie van het gebouwenbestand binnen de EU is niet alleen een prioriteit vanwege het potentieel om de CO2-uitstoot te verminderen, maar ook om duurzame groei en werkgelegenheid te stimuleren" zegt Kelly in een reactie. "Het huidige renovatiepercentage is ongeveer één procent per jaar, wat veel lager is dan nodig. Daarom moeten we ervoor zorgen dat elk nieuwbouwproject aan hoge milieunormen voldoet, zodat we ze niet ook nog hoeven te renoveren." Er moet een nieuw EU-instrument komen dat discriminatie van bedrijven uit EU-landen op openbare aanbestedingsmarkten in landen buiten de EU tegengaat. Het Europees Parlement heeft daar steun voor uitgesproken. Eerder kondigde de Europese Commissie een dergelijk instrument aan om internationale vrijhandel en de kansen van EU-bedrijven buiten de Unie te bevorderen. EU-bedrijven azen op overheidsopdrachten wereldwijd, maar het gebeurt te vaak dat landen hun markt blokkeren of dat er geen eerlijke aanbestedingsregels zijn. Hierdoor worden EU-firma's die diensten of goederen leveren geregeld buitengesloten. De Europarlementariërs zijn het eens met twee soorten IIO-maatregelen waaruit de Europese Commissie zou kunnen kiezen om ongelijke toegang tot aanbestedingsmarkten te verhelpen: het aanpassen van de score van een aanbesteding door bedrijven die aan het IIO onderworpen zijn – zonder de prijs te beïnvloeden die aan de succesvolle bieder moet worden betaald – of uitsluiting van een inschrijving van de aanbestedings- of concessiemarkt in de EU. Het Parlement wil wel dat er twee uitzonderingen komen op de inzet van het instrument. Er komen dus maatregelen die een eerlijker speelveld op het gebied van internationale aanbestedingen moeten bevorderen. VVD-Europarlementariër Liesje Schreinemacher juicht het IIO zeer toe. K Sera makes very prescient predictions.   Note: This podcast was originally recorded in spring 2020 and your hosts are starting to face the pandemic in all of its bluntness. There are a few predictions that Phil has made that were way off the mark.
