"It's time to stand up, with eyes open, ears down to the ground. A change is long overdue. So, wake up. Question everything. Are you awake?"—One by One (2014) For the 19th TMR Movie Roundtable we welcome back our good friends Frank Johnson and Antony Rotunno for a three-way discussion on the cult British "truth movement" film One by One (2014), starring the well-loved (and much-missed) comedian and actor Rik Mayall, written and directed by Diane Jessie Miller. A young woman, Dion, is befriended by an unconventional group of people while she's working in a UK town cafe. Although her policeman boyfriend is not happy about this, because he thinks she should aspire to greater things than waitressing and considers her new pals too idealistic and eccentric, Dion sticks with her friends because they bring a fresh sense of joy and peace into her life. But when tragedy strikes, Dion's life is turned upsidedown; and thus begins her journey "down the rabbit hole" as the group reveals to her the unsettling truths that they have come to understand. Incredulous at first, Dion eventually comes to the same realisation, and the film closes with (what seems to be) the initial stages of the anticipated calamity. Join us as we discuss the production, consider it in relation to the so-called "truth movement", and ask what the filmmakers might have meant by admonishing audiences to "Wake up, now!" The Cutting Edge Japan Business Show By Dale Carnegie Training Tokyo, Japan

The object of a sale is to exchange a good or a service for money. The degree to which that money can exceed the variable and fixed costs associated with delivering it, determines the success and longevity of the company. We all know that nothing happens in business without a sale. If that is the case then salespeople have a critical role to produce as much revenue as possible for the firm. There are prices set for goods and services. Goods are tangible items and plotting the costs and the margin of profit are relatively straight forward. Buy low and sell high is an old business maxim. Services are more difficult to price because they are intangibles. In both cases, the value proposition of the price against what is being delivered, is the communication piece that salespeople have to master in order to be successful. Imagine my surprise, as an expert in sales training, when I meet salespeople who have not spent even one second trying to master the bridging of the gap between value and cost. Sitting in the audience at a speaker event, next to a thirtyish Japanese sale's guy, I was astounded by a few things he said as we discussed selling over lunch. I was interested in hearing what his sales process was. He didn't really understand my question because he had no defined process. He had been selling for this firm for seven years so he was an experienced salesperson. He contacts a lead, gets an appointment, shows up and explains the service and submits a quote, he told me. Really? On the blank side of meal menu, I mapped out the elements of the sales process for him. Prepare for the meeting and focus your intention on one thing – getting the re-order, not just the solitary sale. Build trust through establishing rapport. Create interest by asking extremely well designed questions to understand the client's needs. Now tell the client whether we can help them or not and if we can, explain the how of our solution. There may be points of insufficient clarity, concerns, hesitations or downright objections to what we are proposing. We need to deal with those before we proceed to ask for the order, and then we do the follow up to deliver the service or good. He was impressed by this structural approach to the sales call, as he should have been, because he was certainly doing it the hard way. Having a roadmap makes the whole process much easier for both buyer and seller. I then asked him what does he do when the buyer says, “too expensive”. With a cherubic mien, he told me he offered to “drop the price”. Incredulous, I asked “by how much do you usually drop it?”. He quoted 20% as the number. There were four other sales people in his team and if that is how they roll over there, then that is an expensive first response to client pushback on pricing. He was an experienced guy, but that was the best he could come up with. Why would that be? He didn't have any other knowledge about how to deal with that type of situation. Do you think price comes up fairly regularly in sales conversations with buyers? Of course it does, so how could this continue like this, as if it were acceptable. He should have said, “why do you say that” when told it was too expensive? Was the price objection genuine, a ruse, sport negotiation, time bound, or irrelevant because they haven't seen enough value yet to understand the price point? There will be one highest priority element in the too expensive objection. It might be the actual volume of cash involved, budget allocation timings, internal competing project competition concerns, etc. Which one is it – we need to know. I have been told “too expensive”, which I recognise is a short form summary of a host of reasons for not proceeding. When I questioned the why, it was a “budget issue”. Now as sale's professionals we have to dig deeper, “why is it a budget issue?”. “Because that number will exceed our budget allocation for that quarter”. That means it is not too expensive after all. It is just too expensive if paid in one quarter, but fully capable of purchase if the payments are split across quarters. Except you would never know that, if your response was to drop your price by 20%. Would you be willing to help the client out and split the payments across quarters? I would guess you would prefer that to having to drop your price. The moral of this story is to take a very detailed look at what your salespeople are doing. Don't confuse seven years of sales experience with one year of experience seven times. Also, don't imagine that they have a process, that they know how to explain the value or to deal with objections. Based on what we see in our sales training classes and talking with clients, in Japan, the chances of that being the case are very low.

However, unlike most others, EA has Ole Miss on the outside looking in.Actually, EA prefers the likes of Colorado, LSU, Clemson and Penn State to Ole Miss, especially the offense. The latter three all have overall offense ratings higher than the Rebels' 87.Zach Berry (Ole Miss Spirit) and Grayson Weir (Bro Bible) discuss in an all-new edition of ‘The Flagship,' powered by College Corner. Plus, Texas and Oklahoma are officially members of the SEC. We talk about the Freddie Freeman situation which has been the talk of baseball with new information all the time. One can't help but draw a comparison between Jose Ramirez and Freddie Freeman and how both were a pair of players who wanted to stay. Jose made sure it got done and Freddie was not given all the information by his agent. In the end, one player is very happy and the other is likely also happy but not as happy as they could have been.  We talk about the decline of Oscar Gonzalez of late and how his numbers show him to be in a very small group of players in terms of walks, strikeouts, and groundball rate. His most likely comparison is Randal Grichuk, but like everyone else Gonzalez matches up with it has been an up and down career. We also talk about Amed Rosario and how this season has been much like last season for him and one can expect many more ups and downs on the way to a league-average season for the Guardians shortstop. I am still bullish on a trade because he will likely make eight million or more in his final year of arbitration. The Guardians own all the shortstop prospects in baseball, so getting league average at that cost doesn't match up.  We talk about the top ten players as I see it right now in the minors. Will Brennan has made a name for himself this year and looks like another Steven Kwan type of outfielder for the Guardians. Brennan is a fascinating prospect as he was announced as a two-way player and might have gotten a chance to pitch if not for the lost 2020 season. We also give Micah Pries a shoutout as the Eastern League player of the week and talk about the promotions of Xzavion Curry and Logan Allen. Oh and we experience an unbelievable walk off win for the Cleveland Guardians. The third such time this has happened so far on the podcast this year.  Support Us By Supporting Our Sponsors! “Stop being incredulous” John 20:24-31 By: Ysrael De la Cruz Last week I talked about how the resurrection of Jesus from the dead is the foundation of the Christian faith. It is the reason Christianity exists today. The disciples were not transformed because the tomb was empty; they were transformed because they saw Jesus alive.…

While they were still incredulous for joy and were amazed, he asked them, “Have you anything here to eat?” They gave him a piece of baked fish; he took it and ate it in front of them.  Luke 24:41–43“Incredulous for joy!”  What a great description of the disciples' reaction to Jesus!  To be “incredulous” means that the disciples were not sure what to believe.  They were hesitant to believe in what they were seeing.  There was Jesus, whom they saw crucified, standing before them with the wounds in His hands and feet.  He was talking to them and asked for something to eat.  They were in a bit of shock, disbelief and uncertainty. But the description says that they were incredulous “for joy!”  It's as if they were waiting to explode with joy, they wanted to experience joy in what they were seeing, but something was holding them back.  It all seemed to be too good.  Was it true?  Could it be that Jesus really conquered death and was once again back with them? This reaction of the disciples reveals an experience that we all have at times when invited by God to enter into His glory and grace.  So often, when God invites us closer to Himself, when He invites us to experience the joy of His Resurrection, we react with hesitancy.  We can find it hard to actually let ourselves experience the reality of the Resurrection in our lives. This can happen for many reasons.  Discouragement is one cause for our hesitancy to fully embrace the Resurrection.  The disciples were deeply discouraged at the death of Jesus.  And now that He had risen, and was standing there before them, they were hesitant to let go of that discouragement they let take hold.  So also, we can easily let the weight of the world, our sin, or the sins of others get to us.  We can get angry or upset and find ourselves brewing over the apparent problems we face.  Taking joy in the Resurrection means we turn our eyes away from those things and look intently at the realities God wants us to focus on.  It does no good to become discouraged with the many problems that come our way.  Instead, our Lord is regularly calling us to look beyond them to something greater.  He is calling us to look to His victory!  Looking at His victory is freeing and produces an incredible faith in our lives.  And that faith in the Risen Lord will have the effect of a wonderful joy that God wants us to have.  Reflect, today, upon your own reaction to the reality of the Resurrection of our Lord.  Spend some time today gazing upon the Risen Lord.  Look at His victory.  Look at His glory.  Look at Him who calls you to a deep faith.  With your eyes fixed on Him, all else that tempts you to discouragement simply fades away.My resurrected Lord, I do want to gaze upon You.  I want to see Your splendor and glory.  I want to see You risen from the dead and take great joy and delight in this reality.  Help me, dear Lord, to experience the incredible joy that comes from knowing You, our Resurrected Lord.  Jesus, I trust in You.Source of content: catholic-daily-reflections.comCopyright © 2022 My Catholic Life! A farmer lost his watch in the barn. It was a family heirloom and of great value. After searching the hay for a long while; he gave up. Sharing his plight with some of the children playing outside one young boy offered to help. Minutes later the same boy emerged from the barn with the precious watch. Incredulous, the farmer asked how he found it. “I sat quietly and listened until I heart the ticking” was the boy's answer. The young boy's strategy is the invitation of the prophets - come and hear the passion of God's heart. It too has been lost in the distractions (hay and manure seem fitting) of the world. Be still and you will know Me, God says.(Ps 46:10).

Sign-up for my free 20 day devotional, The Word Before Work Foundations, at http://TWBWFoundations.com Then Daniel went to Arioch, whom the king had appointed to execute the wise men of Babylon, and said to him, “Do not execute the wise men of Babylon. Take me to the king, and I will interpret his dream for him.” (Daniel 2:24)The context of today's verse, found in Daniel 2, contains one of the most absurd accounts in all of Scripture.Nebuchadnezzar, king of Babylon, had a series of troubling dreams. So he summoned his many “magicians, enchanters, sorcerers and astrologers” to make sense of his nightmares (Daniel 2:2). But the king didn't just demand interpretation of his dreams. He demanded that his servants guess the content of those dreams as well. He said, “If you do not tell me what my dream was and interpret it, I will have you cut into pieces and your houses turned into piles of rubble” (Daniel 2:5).Incredulous, the king's staff replied, “There is no one on earth who can do what the king asks! No king, however great and mighty, has ever asked such a thing of any magician or enchanter or astrologer. What the king asks is too difficult. No one can reveal it to the king except the gods, and they do not live among humans” (Daniel 2:10-11).King Nebuchadnezzar did not like that answer, so he ordered the execution of all the wise men in Babylon, including Daniel and his friends. But instead of resigning himself to death, Daniel “urged [his friends] to plead for mercy from the God of heaven concerning this mystery, so that he and his friends might not be executed with the rest of the wise men of Babylon” (Daniel 2:18).Stop for a second and appreciate how remarkable this account is. Even though the king's request was certifiably crazy and impossible for the other wise men of Babylon, Daniel had faith that the God of the Bible could do impossible work through him.And sure enough, that's exactly what happened. God revealed the content and the interpretation of Nebuchadnezzar's dreams to Daniel. That's when Daniel uttered today's verse, boldly claiming to have the answers nobody else could produce.Centuries before the words were written, Daniel understood what Paul said in 2 Corinthians 10:3-4: “For though we live in the world, we do not wage war as the world does. The weapons we fight with are not the weapons of the world. On the contrary, they have divine power to demolish strongholds.”Daniel was working “in the world” just as the other wise men of Babylon were. But Daniel worked distinctly. He wielded otherworldly weapons—in this case, intense prayer—and had faith that God could produce otherworldly results through his work. Those same spiritual weapons are available to you and me today, believer. We don't go to work with the same toolset as our non-Christian counterparts. We go to work with the Creator God dwelling in us. We go to work with His ‘“incomparably great power” (Ephesians 1:19). We go to work with and for the One “who is able to do immeasurably more than all we ask or imagine” (Ephesians 3:20).Are you working as if you believe these things to be true? May we all be like Daniel—those with faith that God is able to do through our work what others believe to be impossible.

About to embark upon the first crewed mission to Mars, three NASA astronauts (played by James Brolin, Sam Waterston and OJ Simpson) find themselves suddenly removed from their command module, minutes before lift-off, and flown to a secret desert base. There they learn of an outrageous plan, hatched by establishment conspirators, to fake the Mars landing using a TV studio, props and themselves as actors—a deception in which they are forced to be complicit. Picking up on the trail of the conspiracy is news reporter Robert Caulfield (Elliott Gould), who goes further and further down the proverbial Rabbit Hole as he tries to make sense of the increasing anomalies. But not all goes well—(or, perhaps, not all seems to go well)—with the plan. Upon re-entry into Earth's atmosphere, the astronauts' (crewless) module breaks up. Now, they are officially dead—their existence a threat to the lying narrative. Their only hope is to escape and reveal the plot to an incredulous world.

Michael got out and there embedded under the back of his vehicle is a red Morris 1100 family saloon car.The windscreen of the car was shattered where it has hit the back of the lorry body and the bonnet was wedge well under the main chassis frame. As Michael approached to see if he could help, the driver’s door opened and a man fell into the road. The Cutting Edge Japan Business Show By Dale Carnegie Training Tokyo, Japan

His answer had me reeling. Here is the snapper – do you know what is happening inside your team?  Are they also dropping the price immediately as their first counter to an objection on the money?  If they are then there is a huge amount of firm success and longevity being strewn on the ground here.  What a waste. That is the point, in Japan, these types of low levels of sales professionalism are the norm and not the exception.  It is tolerated because everyone is the same – equally sad and hopeless. Based on what we see in our sales training classes and talking with clients, in Japan, the chances of that being the case are very, very, very low.

Key takeaways: With acquittal, Trump wins battle for the Republican soul The decision by most GOP senators to acquit Trump in the 57-43 vote on a charge of incitement of insurrection demonstrates that there remains deep hesitation in the party to disown the former president or his brand of politics. That comes despite Trump's role in the deadly Jan. 6 attack on the Capitol that endangered their safety and that of others, in a failed attempt by his supporters to overturn his defeat in the 2020 election. While impeachment managers won a majority of Senate votes to convict Trump, with seven Republicans joining all 50 Democrats and independents, the margin fell short of the two-thirds majority of 67 votes required under the Constitution to convict. He's a strong force in the party. There's no doubt about that," Sen. Tommy Tuberville, R-Ala., told NBC News. The consensus of Senate Republican leadership in favor of acquittal sends a signal to aspiring officeholders, donors and activists: They are unlikely to build or support political infrastructure to elevate GOP candidates who stand against the ex-president. During Trump's presidency, several Republicans who clashed with him left the party, including former Rep. Justin Amash of Michigan, while others pulled the plug on their political careers, like Sen. Jeff Flake of Arizona. The dynamics that exiled them were entrenched by Trump's acquittal. Some Democrats were shocked at the GOP's desire to stand behind Trump. "I'm just incredulous," Sen. Sherrod Brown, D-Ohio, told reporters before the vote on Friday. "Incredulous, except I've watched, I've watched my spineless colleagues walk around with fear in their eyes for four years. And so maybe I shouldn't be surprised." The impacts are likely to reverberate in American politics for years. Greetings friends to this end of the year podcast! Before I share my own stories, I want to give you our last two Listener Stories for 2020, one from Tom and another from Tammy. I think Tammy’s story is especially interesting because the Coronavirus pandemic had a big impact on her. I think her story will resonate with many of you.  Hello, my name is Tammy.  I recently retired from being a principal and before that a school teacher, a job I had done and loved for over 30 years.  I had oodles of plans for what I was going to do, places I was going to go and things I was really looking forward to doing-  like working with children at our church this summer.  When COVID hit and closed down school as we knew it on March 13, 2020, my life really changed.  I didn’t get to say goodbye to my students, parents and staff, it just all ended that Friday in March.  I was really struggling with what to me felt like a major loss. (This is in no way to disrespect those that have had greater losses due to COVID.) I was talking to my husband explaining how I was feeling such an absence of being needed and like I was just wandering looking for what I was supposed to be doing with my life at this time.  My sweet husband said some very wise words to me.  He said, “Tammy, I believe God is just giving you this down time to recharge you and prepare you for what He has planned next for you to do for Him.  Take this time and use it to its best.”  While I knew he was right, I have to say I DON’T  do down time well.  When you work 60 hours a week for oodles of years and have people consistently needing things from you, to have that come to a screeching halt, really put me off kilter.   I was struggling trying to figure out what God wanted me to do.  Then one morning in my devotion time God put on my heart that I have been wanting to complete a read through the Bible in a year program for a long time.  Even though it was August, I thought, this doesn’t have to wait until January to be a New Year’s Resolution, it can be my New Life Resolution. What a blessing this decision has been!  I looked at all different types of programs.  I found Digging Deeper Daily and liked the explanation of how this program was laid out. I wanted to learn about the “threads that unify the message of the Old and New Testaments”. I also like the fact that there were brief devotional notes that I thought would help me see the connections clearer.   I started this journey on August 20th and upon hearing the first reading, I fell in love with this journey.  Phil’s voice was so calming and yet assured in what he was saying and reading.  The brief stories he shares of his work as a Bible translator make me feel like I have a new friend.  This adventure has helped me grow daily in my understanding of God’s word.   Being a Christian since a child, I had heard many stories from the bible, now I understand more deeply what was happening before, during and after those isolated events.  It has really helped make the Bible come to life for me.   Phil explains how he started this project as a gift to leave his grandchildren.  He wanted to read the entire bible to them.  I feel his love each morning as I listen to him read and explain the daily passage, its as if for those brief moments I have been adopted into his family.  This has not only been a way for me to learn more about the Bible, grow closer to God, but also to feel like I am being gathered into the fold each morning.   The brief explanations at the end of the readings are so helpful.  I always look forward to the prayer Phil delivers to close the devotional time.  Often, I will replay the prayer a time or two more.  At the end of “our time together” I try to conclude with a prayer for Phil and all those doing God’s work to bring His word to the nations that don’t have the Bible yet.  This reminder of what a gift the Bible is to us, that I often take for granted because I haven’t known a time without it, has made my daily time with God even more precious.   Early on in the program, Phil was reading to us from Matthew.  When He read Matthew 11:28 which says, “Come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.” I cried.  This to me reiterated what my husband told me.    I was in need of this passage.  When Phil read this verse, with such love in his voice, I felt as if it was God speaking it to me.  I needed rest, yet I wouldn’t let myself admit it.  Now, each morning I consider my time listening to Phil read God’s word as a time of rest, connection and recharging.   I can’t wait to find out what great adventure God has in store for me next, or where He needs me in this stage of life, what I do know though is that Phil Fields and Digging Deeper Daily will be on that amazing ride with me.   Thanks so much, Tammy, for your story! And with a sincere blush, I also say thanks for your kind words. I am so pleased— more than that— filled with joy, when people are able to look through the kind of one-way mirror that podcasting is, to become my friends and even adopted family.  Thanks to Tom giving me this next story. Tom is mainly a reader (not a regular podcast listener). The 3D YouVersion plan he has followed for 2020 is called Read To Me Daily. (Link given in the episode notes.) Tom is a long time friend, dating back to my music teaching days. There is one odd, totally unplanned, similarity between his story and Tammy’s. I think you will catch it. My name is Tom and I am a sixty-year-old Arkansan.  I have read through the Bible several times using different plans.  The last few times, using electronic media, such as Digging Deeper Daily, has aided me greatly through ease of access.  Reading the Bible entirely in one year gives one little time for Bible study, but I value the discipline of daily reading which stirs my thoughts and continually whets my appetite to, what else, dig deeper. I read through the Bible this year using the Amplified Bible, Classic Edition.  In the past I have used various translations and even some paraphrases and I may have been wiser to use the recommended New Living Translation or Good News Translation.  Instead, however, I wanted to use the AMPC this year to slow me down.  The many bracketed words and phrases in the AMPC which are used to further describe a translated word or passage, forced me to ponder over a word or passage and think about how an idea was being explained.  I did enjoy the New Living Translation as well as the Good News Translation versions referenced most often in the devotionals.  I found multiple translations of the same verses to be quite helpful. Most years when using a daily reading plan I plowed right past the devotional passages and read only the scripture.  This year I was determined to include reading the devotionals, again, to slow me down and to help me think about what I was reading.  I enjoyed reading the Digging Deeper Daily devotionals which often gave the translator’s perspective of a passage, citing examples of difficult passages to translate and including real-life examples of working with an indigenous people group to help them understand the Bible.  In addition to translation notes, I appreciated the occasional summaries from prior days, reminding me of an important passage, even to the point of repeating some passages over consecutive days for emphasis.  I also appreciated being prodded by the devotional to live up to its title to, here it is again, dig deeper into particular passages. I appreciated how the daily readings were divided up between Old and New Testaments, particularly saving Isaiah for the end of the calendar year with so many relevant passages for the advent season.  My favorite passage, personally, occurred late in the calendar year on September 21.  Matthew 11:28-30, “Come to me, all of you who are weary and carry heavy burdens, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you.  Let me teach you, because I am humble and gentle at heart, and you will find rest for your souls.  For my yoke is easy to bear, and the burden I give you is light.” (NLT)  I am never more at peace than when I surrender to Christ’s yoke. Finally, while I spent the year in the daily reading plan rather than listening to the daily podcasts, I did enjoy utilizing the audio podcasts through the Old Testament genealogies.

While they were still incredulous for joy and were amazed, he asked them, “Have you anything here to eat?” They gave him a piece of baked fish; he took it and ate it in front of them. Luke 24:41-43“Incredulous for joy!” What a great description of the disciples’ reaction to Jesus! But the description says that they were incredulous “for joy!” It’s as if they were waiting to explode with joy, they wanted to experience joy in what they were seeing, but something was holding them back. With your eyes fixed on Him, all else that tempts you to discouragement simply fades away.Lord, I do want to gaze upon You. I want to see Your splendor and glory. I want to see You risen from the dead and take great joy and delight in this reality. Help me, dear Lord, to experience the incredible joy that comes from knowing You, our Resurrected Lord. Jesus, I trust in You.Source of content: catholic-daily-reflections.comCopyright © 2020 My Catholic Life! Inc. All rights reserved. Used with permission via RSS feed.

What if someone tapped you on the shoulder and asked if you liked your job. Would you say you loved it? Today on the podcast we have Bob Chapman, the author of Everybody Matters, and we’re talking about the extraordinary power of caring: what happens to a workplace when people are cared for and care for others in return? What kind of impact will that make? The journey Bob began his career the traditional way. He had a management degree, so thought his job was to manage people and tell them what to do in order to be successful. He was by no means oppressive, but he saw people as functions: operator, assembly worker, store clerk, engineer. And then he asked himself: why can’t business be fun? Why do we call it work? It occurred to him that we have people in our care for 40 hours a week. Everybody is somebody’s precious child placed in our care, and we are the most significant influence on their sense of purpose and self-worth. The bus If you can build a safe bus (your business model), and find drivers who can drive it safely (your leaders), then anybody who gets on that bus is going to be fine. Leadership is about allowing people to rise to the level of their ability and letting them feel appreciated for whatever that is. Business could be the most powerful force for good if we cared about the people we had the opportunity and privilege of leading. Transforming managers Bob’s greatest fear is to create something great, but be too dependent upon him that if something were to happen to him, it would fall apart. So they created a university to transform managers into leaders — because you can’t manage people. But you can care for them and make sure they succeed in the same way a parent would for their child. It’s stewardship of these precious lives that walk into our buildings every day and they simply want to know that who they are and what they do matters. It’s about sending people home fulfilled and cared for. Care is contagious Caring for people has a ripple effect that extends way beyond the office. When people don’t feel cared for, it’s hard for them to care for others. But when they do feel cared for, it’s contagious. Bob shares the personal story of Steve, who said, “My wife is talking to me.” That’s the difference it made in his life. Because when Bob embraced these practices that made people feel like they were being listened to, and that they were contributing, Steve went home feeling better about himself. When he feels better about himself, he’s nicer to his wife. And when he’s nicer to his wife, she talks to him. The way people are treated for 40 hours a week matters. It’s not about pumping fear out of the room — it’s not even thinking of fear in the first place, and leading out inspiration instead. Justifying care Treat people like you would like your son and daughter treated. Even if they’re not your son or daughter, they’re somebody’s son or daughter, and that should make no difference. Someone once asked Bob how they can show a return on investment of caring for people. Incredulous, Bob asked back why they needed a return on investment to start caring for people. What do you mean, how do you justify caring? How can you justify not caring? Resources Bob Chapman (LinkedIn) | Everybody Matters | The One Minute Manager (Amazon)

Sales Is Easy, So Why Do We Make It So Hard? He was impressed by this structural approach to the sales call, as he should have been, because he was doing it the hard way. Having a roadmap makes the whole process much easier for both buyer and seller. I then asked him what does he do when the buyer says, “too expensive”. His answer had me reeling. With a cherubic mien, he told me he offered to “drop the price”. Incredulous, I asked “by how much do you usually drop it?”. He quoted 20% as the number. There were four other sales people in that team and if that is how they roll over there, then that is an expensive first response to client pushback on pricing.   Here is the snapper – do you know what is happening inside your team? Are they also dropping the price immediately as their first counter to an objection on the money? If they are then there is a huge amount of firm success and longevity being strewn on the ground here. What a waste.   He was an experienced guy but that was the best he could come up with? Why would that be? He didn't have any other knowledge about how to deal with that type of situation. Do you think price comes up fairly regularly in sales conversations with buyers? Of course it does, so how could this continue like this, as if it were acceptable. That is the point, in Japan, these types of low levels of sales professionalism are the norm and not the exception. It is tolerated because everyone is the same – hopeless. It is just too expensive if paid in one quarter but fully capable of purchase if the payments are split across quarters. Based on what we see in our sales training classes and talking with clients, in japan, the chances of that being the case are very, very low. Engaged employees are self-motivated. The self-motivated are inspired. Inspired staff grow your business but are you inspiring them? We teach leaders and organisations how to inspire their people. Want to know how we do that? LEADING A DOUBLE LIFE__EPISODE 005 Religion, Marriage, and Murder Hi, everyone, and welcome to episode 5 of my podcast Leading A Double Life. I’m Kwei Quartey, a physician and author of the Inspector Darko Dawson novels. On my podcast, what it’s like to be a medical doctor and a writer. This episode, Religion, Marriage, and Murder. On Tuesday, August 29, 2017, a little under three months from now, my fifth Detective Chief Inspector Darko Dawson novel will go on sale. It’s called DEATH BY HIS GRACE, and like the other books in the detective series, it’s set in Ghana, my birthplace. Here’s my elevator pitch: Katherine Yeboah’s marriage to Solomon Vanderpuye is all the talk of Accra high society. But when it becomes apparent that Katherine is infertile, Solomon’s extended family accuses her of being a witch, hounding her until the relationship is soured. As some of Inspector Darko Dawson’s old demons resurface, he investigates a case of marital bliss turned deadly. If the fourth novel, GOLD OF OUR FATHERS, took Darko far from home, this one comes too close. Darko’s wife, Christine, is Katherine’s first cousin. So, as Darko wrestles with the case, family members inject their emotions and opinions into the investigation, including and especially Darko’s consistently annoying mother-in-law, Gifty. DEATH BY HIS GRACE is based in part on the real-life events of a Ghanaian friend of mine. The story has three major components: first, the ostensibly fairytale marriage of accountant Katherine Yeboah to lawyer Solomon Vanderpuye; second, religion, which plays a major role in the life of Ghanaians; and, third, of course, murder. Can’t write a murder mystery without a murder. Now Katherine’s and Solomon’s extravagant Accra wedding was a society event—one of those occasions at which anyone with social standing would want to be seen. But a year later, the marriage has lost its magic as it becomes apparent that Katherine is sterile. At that point, life turns hard and ugly. Solomon and his extended family begin to hound her, calling her a witch. In Ghana, fertility is very important, and having children in a marriage is the norm. In the West, we generally don’t disapprove if a married couple chooses not to have children, but in Ghana, that would be regarded negatively, and an infertile woman would fall under great suspicion. I say suspicion because one of the reasons some Ghanaians give for female infertility is that a witch or someone else has cursed the woman, or that the woman herself is the witch. One theory goes something like this: at night, the woman’s witch form, I guess you could call it, carries the fetus out of the uterus to her coven of fellow witches, who join her in devouring her baby. I know—not a pretty visual. Incredulous as it may seem, belief in witchcraft is still alive and well in Ghana, including among educated people. You might ask how that’s possible, but deeply held beliefs are often dissociated from education. I’d venture to say that there are educated Americans who believe God made the earth in seven days and that Adam and Eve were real people living in the Garden of Eden about 3000 years ago. And there are also lots of Americans who believe in ghosts, which I personally don’t. Anyway, back to Ghana—bottom line, try to avoid being designated a witch there. That might be funny if it weren’t so serious because Ghanaian women perceived as witches can be physically attacked, hurt and even killed by their accusers. Or these women can be subjected to dangerous traditional treatments of all kinds. In fact, as in my novel, if a woman is murdered and there was talk about witchcraft, take a look at the people who leveled that accusation because there may lie your suspects. If the marriage of Katherine and Solomon are front and center in the novel, the backdrop is religion. In 2013, a WIN-Gallup poll found Ghana to be the most religious country in the world. Not one of the most; the most. The poll used something called the “religiosity index,” defined as, “the percentage of the population who self-describe themselves as ‘a religious person’ in the following question: Irrespective of whether you attend a place of worship or not, would you say you are a religious person, not a religious person or a convinced atheist?” Some of the other countries on the “most religious” list include Nigeria at number two; Armenia, number three; Fiji, number four; and Macedonia, number five. On the other end of the scale, China is 47% atheist. Shifting to the US for a moment, a Pew Research Center study finds the top five most religious states are, Alabama, Mississippi, Tennessee, Louisiana, and Arkansas. I don’t see any surprised looks in the room. California, my home state, is number 35. The least religious state is New Hampshire. One of the important takeaways of the Gallup poll is that the poor are more religious than the rich. People in the bottom income groups are 17 percent more religious than those in the top income groups. I think you can see this on a macro and micro level wherever you go in the world. In Ghana, religiosity is everywhere. Some people go to church not just once a week on Sundays, but on one or two weekdays in addition. These may not be brief services either. They can be up to four hours of worship. If you are imagining small, humble churches, yes, there certainly are those, but Ghana also has a mammoth Pentecostal movement that involves mega-churches of the kind seen in the United States—huge structures that can seat the thousands flocking to their revered evangelist. Prayer vigils and so-called deliverance services take place in large venues like sports stadia and the Independence Square in Accra. The most famous and prosperous evangelist religious leaders, like Bishop Dag Heward-Mills, who also has churches in the US, are able to pack these audiences in as well as any music celebrity. Although religiosity spans the different levels of society, anyone going to these events will be struck by how many poor people attend. I think this correlates closely with the global findings of the Gallup poll. On a daily basis, Ghanaians don’t fail to remind you of their belief in God. When you say to someone, “Hello, how are you?” you’re likely to get the response, “By His grace,” which is shorthand for, “By God’s grace, I’m well,” or nowadays with socio-economic circumstances in Ghana so tough, you also hear, “By God’s grace, we’re managing.” Someone once quipped that Ghana has a lot of managers. I borrowed this ubiquitous Ghanaian phrase, “by His grace,” for my book title, DEATH BY HIS GRACE. I’ve thought a lot about what the title means. It could be asking: while God’s grace bestows good fortune on some, did He forget to protect others, like the perfectly decent, upstanding, and churchgoing Katherine Vanderpuye, who suffered an awful murder? A fundamental issue is whether a so-called man of God can be under the same level of suspicion of murder as an outright sinner. DCI Darko Dawson apparently thinks so, much to the dismay of some of his family members. I guess my novel raises the question also whether religion and belief in God, professed by so many people in Ghana, influences moral behavior there. From what I see for myself when visiting the country, the answer is no. If such a religious nation is seeing rising corruption, fraud, armed robbery, murder, and vehicle theft (of which I myself have been a victim), there’s either no connection between religion and crime, or there’s a negative correlation. On the other side of the coin, some non-religious countries have low rates of corruption and crime in general, the obvious example being the Scandinavian nations. During my research in Ghana for DEATH BY HIS GRACE, I went to religious services held by these prominent men of God. These events can be quite spectacular; particularly the deliverance services in which healing of the sick and casting out of demons take place. Also, speaking in tongues, or glossolalia, is characteristic of the Pentecostal and so-called charismatic churches. Most dramatic are the congregation members who become slain in The Spirit—that is, when the Holy Spirit presumably enters their bodies and causes them to collapse. For that, professional catchers are dispatched throughout the church or other venue to prevent people from hurting themselves as they drop to the ground. From a logistics and medical point of view, though, I don’t see how everyone falling to the ground can possibly be caught before impact. It’s doubtful then, that these are genuine instances of loss of consciousness because a lot more people would get hurt if that were the case. The casting out of demons can be extraordinarily violent and creepy. A person may writhe around on the ground screaming and sweating while a pastor yells at them in order to expel the demons. One girl in a church setting was worked on for more than an hour straight and the bishops trying to exorcise her had to take a break because they were so exhausted. At a service I attended run by a bishop called Boniga, there was a mother with her infant who suffered from epilepsy. The story was that the mother’s sister, presumably out of jealousy or hatred, had cursed the child. So mom came to Bishop Boniga with her baby to have the demons cast out. The so-called healing I witnessed by Bishop Boniga wasn’t terribly impressive either. An old man who was said to be wheelchair dependent from crippling arthritis threw his cane away after being touched by Boniga, and walked off the stage without the cane. However, I noticed later one of his family members came back to get it. The old guy probably endured the short walk off the stage, but I bet once he had done that, he felt overcome again by the arthritic pain. So, why all this piety with poverty in Ghana and other countries like it? It’s a question I put to myself all the time. Is it belief for the sake of belief? Is it that the charismatic faiths hold out the promise that God in His wisdom and at some point of His choosing, will bestow blessings and financial success on the worshipper? In other words, the harder you pray or speak in tongues, the more likely you are to get rich? Or is it that prayer, churchgoing, Bible study and so on, are lifestyles in which poverty-laden people experience a sense of power and fulfillment in a life that otherwise gives them precious little of that? I don’t have those answers, but that’s part of the reason I wrote the book. Writing a story with a backdrop I don’t fully understand is a way to explore it through the lens of murder, and that always renders it more intense. That’s all for this episode.
