My guest for this episode is legendary guitarist Phil Keaggy. Phil has joined forces with Neal Morse, ex-Genesis drummer Chester Thompson, and noted session bassist Byron House to form a new prog rock supergroup called Cosmic Cathedral. The band's debut album, Deep Water, drops April 25 from Inside Out Music. Phil was kind enough to tell me how the project came about, the making of the record, his musical beginnings and more. Cosmic Cathedral rocks, swings, grooves, and is full of all the proggy goodness you'd expect from a project involving Neal Morse. Progressive rock master Neal Morse is a prolific and qualitative force in modern prog and he's back on the show to talk about a brand new band project called Neal Morse & the Resonance. The band will drop its debut album, No Hill for a Climber, Nov. 8 on Inside Out Music. Neal discusses the other band members, making the album and writing the songs, his recent solo acoustic tour, an exciting new collaboration with Chester Thompson and Phil Keaggy coming soon, and more. Progressive rockers Frost* return with the band's first official concept album, Life in the Wires, which is set to drop Oct. 18 on Inside Out Music. Founder, keyboardist, vocalist, producer, and primary songwriter Jem Godfrey was kind enough to take time out of his busy schedule to discuss the new album with me, as well as such topics as his musical beginnings, how he became a producer, producing No. 1 hits for pop artists, playing keyboards for guitar heroes Steve Vai and Joe Satriani, and much more. The new album should appeal to fans of the Frost* 2006 debut, Milliontown, although it includes sonic flavors from more recent albums as well. Hello everyone and welcome to another edition of Interviewing the Legends I'm your host Ray Shasho. KAIPA was the leading Scandinavian progressive band in the 70's and recorded five albums during the years 1975 - 1982. Their albums contained mostly instrumental music, drawing its influences from classic progressive rock bands (CAMEL, YES, GENESIS...), and classical music (BACH). Taking basic inspiration from Swedish folk music they performed an elaborate symphonic aiming at the expression of emotions and feelings in an aesthetic of formal beauty and melodic perfection. Initially the project of keyboardist Hans Lundin and bassist Tomas Eriksson, the band soon grew to include drummer Ingemar Bergman and singer/guitarist Roine Stolt, the latter of whom would eventually go on to form the Flower Kings. Twenty years passed before Lundin and Stolt re-formed a new edition of Kaipa, producing their sixth album, 2002's Notes from the Past. While the group's first five albums were sung entirely in Swedish, Notes from the Past was notable for launching their English-language phase, which continued each subsequent release. Although Stolt again departed, leaving Lundin to captain the band through its next decade, which produced a prolific four LPs. Kaipa has remained a staple of the Inside Out Music label. And now in 2024 Kaipa are back! In the summer of 1964 Hans Lundin's musical career started when he became a member of his first band as organist and singer. He says that the following years were "the best education I could ever get". Nine years later in 1973 he formed the group KAIPA. Now 60 years into his career he and his current bandmates Per Nilsson, Jonas Reingold, Darby Todd, Patrik Lundström & Aleena Gibson are proud to announce the release of Kaipa's 15th studio album Sommargryningsljus (Summer Dawn Light). The dawn theme has always been close to Hans Lundin's heart in his songwriting. With the new album he closes the circle and returns to where it all began. Sommargryningsljus will be released via InsideOutMusic June 28th in 2024. The band recently released their second single from the new album called "Revelationview". Big Big Train has been building momentum in the progressive rock world for years with their brand of quintessentially English, pastoral prog, but the sudden and tragic death of lead vocalist David Longdon dealt the band a huge blow. The band is about to release its first album without David on March 1 through Inside Out Music. New vocalist Alberto Bravin isn't Longdon, but his voice is well suited for what Big Big Train does well. Founding member Gregory Spawton was kind enough to discuss the new album with me, as well as such topics as his musical origin story, how the band got its name, how the band navigated the loss of Longdon and ultimately found Bravin, finally becoming a full-time career musician in his 50s, and much more. Hello everyone and welcome to another edition of Interviewing the Legends I'm your host Ray Shasho Jonas Lindberg & The Other Side is a Progressive rock project from Stockholm, Sweden founded in 2012 by bass player, songwriter, and producer Jonas Lindberg. It all started back in 2008 when the EP "IN SECRET PACE" was recorded by Jonas as an exam-project at the college of Music in Sweden. The first recordings featured a large lineup of musicians and was originally intended to work as a demo for an upcoming band. But as term ended Jonas moved to Stockholm to pursue a career as a freelance musician and the idea got put on hold. In 2012 "IN SECRET PACE" was finally released on digital platforms as Jonas started to work on new material. This time the lineup featured a 5-piece band and the second EP "THE OTHER SIDE" was finished and released in 2013. The project was named "JONAS LINDBERG & THE OTHER SIDE" from the title track of the album after its release. Following the enthusiastic reception of the 2016 album "PATHFINDER", Jonas began working on another full-length album in 2019. The album - called "MILES FROM NOWHERE" - is more of a solo effort than the previous album with Jonas playing most of the instruments himself, and features a few more guest musicians. Returning on a few tracks is Simon WILHELMSSON (drums) as well as Jonas's brother Joel on lead guitar. The 2022 release consists of seven songs which spans the full range of the progressive rock landscape - from the soaring “Summer Queen” (led by Jenny Storm) to the folksy instrumental "Astral Journey" to the closing title track; a sprawling 25-minute epic which features none other than Roine Stolt (The Flower Kings, Transatlantic) on lead guitar. Greetings! Yes, I'm finally getting to catch up on posting current programs since I wasn't needed to work on Sunday as I had been originally scheduled. (I'm per diem speech pathologist, but I'm still not overly fond of 6 day work weeks.) Nonetheless, today's program focuses primarily on a playlist suggested by an article, written by Paul Walker on the Medium.com website, entitled, "The Best Seven Prog Rock Albums of 2022 So Far". (Unfortunately, you can't check out the article, since it has since been removed by the author.) Having not heard any of the releases, I thought it would be interesting how my thoughts about the music lined up (or not) with Mr. Walker's. Actually, they're quite close. Enjoy! The latest edition of THE LOADED RADIO PODCAST is a special one as we sit down with DREAM THEATER singer James Labrie. In the discussion, James discusses his new solo album, "Beautiful Shade Of Grey", which arrives on May 20 via Inside Out Music. James Labrie's fourth solo effort sees him collaborating with guitarist/bassist/composer Paul Logue (EDEN's CURSE) as well as his son, Chance Labrie on drums, guitarist Marco Sfogl and keyboardist Christian “Chrism” Pulkkinen in a sonically stunning journey of beauty, loss and the human condition. A press release reads: 'Going beyond the thematic and personal elements, for James, ‘Beautiful Shade of Grey' presented an opportunity to capture the love and enthusiasm he feels for great songwriting through a vehicle that wasn't tied to the same rules and architypes of his other projects. Reflecting on artists that he's been drawn to over the years, ranging from JOURNEY, FOREIGNER and GINO VANELLI to CHEVELLE, BIG WRECK and PRINCE, the common thread that's kept him coming back to them was their eclectic, unpredictable output.' “All these artists had versality, and I think it's primarily because of this that they maintained my attention. They always, I believe, pushed themselves to ask, ‘what else can I do?'” James as well discusses DREAM THEATER's recent GRAMMY win for the song 'The Alien" off the band's latest album 'A View From The Top Of The World', expanding his creative wings and his current relationship with former DREAM THEATER drummer Mike Portnoy. Steve Hackett joined Genesis at the beginning of 1971 and gained an international reputation as the guitarist in the band's classic line-up alongside Peter Gabriel, Tony Banks, Mike Rutherford and Phil Collins. Hackett's intricate guitar work was a key element of Genesis' albums from Nursery Cryme (1971) to Wind And Wuthering (1977) including the classic Selling England By The Pound. After leaving Genesis at the end of 1977, Hackett's solo career, which now spans more than 30 albums, has demonstrated his extraordinary versatility with both electric and acoustic guitar. Hackett is renowned as both an immensely talented and innovative rock musician and a virtuoso classical guitarist and composer and this was recognized in 2010 when he was inducted into the Rock Hall Of Fame. He has also worked alongside Steve Howe of YES in the supergroup GTR. The lockdown enforced by the 2020 global pandemic has proven to be a particularly creative period for Hackett. He began by releasing Selling England by the Pound & Spectral Mornings: Live at Hammersmith, a live recording of 2019's hugely successful tour celebrating that Genesis classic together with the 40th anniversary of one of his most-loved solo albums. Lockdown also gave Hackett the opportunity to write and record two new studio albums, the UK Classical Chart hit Under A Mediterranean Sky and the forthcoming Surrender of Silence. Matt Goodluck had enjoyed, but freed himself of the Golden handcuffs that tied him to the Department of Immigration. He set up a home studio and started out his dream job, as successful voice over artist. "Echoes of Pink Floyd" at one time were auditioning in Adelaide, and Matt landed the dream job as Lead Vocalist for Australia's top Pink Floyd tribute band, and they began touring nationally. In his younger years, Matt went to England and found himself prog-squatting in the Nolan/Pendragon household. He was toured with bands and worked as the 'Merchandise Man' before working with "Verglas Music" and eventually moving to Germany to join "Inside Out Music." Matt's just a hell of a nice guy !
