So you’ve graduated from architecture school and received a university degree in architecture - so what happens next? What exactly does an architect do? What if you don’t want to be a designer, maybe you have interests in how buildings are detailed and built, the selection of materials and finishes, firm management … so many directions you could go and today we are going to talk about a bunch of them and take you Inside the Firm! [Note: If you are reading this via email, click here to access the on-site audio player] googletag.cmd.push(function() { googletag.display('div-gpt-ad-1562005974350-0'); }); No matter the size of the architectural firm, almost all of them have a similar set of roles to be filled in order to run the firm and make it successful. These roles can be multiple people in a large firm but as the firm size decreases, the number of roles taken on by a single person most likely increases. I’ve talked many times about the multiple hats worn by those of us in the profession who work in small firms, and until recently, this is the only environment I've known for the majority of my entire career. Considering that this is the 944th post I have personally written on this site, it's a little shocking to learn that this is really the first time that I've really dived into the various roles someone can pursue within an architectural office. So, armed with that knowledge, let’s get into the roles and discuss how there is a place for all types of people within the architectural profession. We should point out – or maybe have a small primer conversation that not all of these roles are available at every firm but based on your interests, it is a consideration that might point you towards a particular-sized firm. In no particular order – well that’s not true, we’ve tried to group roles together that might make sense or share some path of growth and development, I suppose I am trying to stay away from implying there is any hierarchy to these roles. Production Manager / Production Staff [5:20 mark] – the backbone of any architectural firm. Everyone in this area is focused on the creation and coordination of the main deliverable of the firm . . . the construction documents. This is also the department of the firm that makes up the largest percentage of staff and effort. Typically this area is where most new graduates start their careers. Construction Administration [11:00 mark] – There is actually an entire department within this category. All the work in this department is concentrated on the execution of the products created by the production department. The effort of making sure that the project is built according to the construction documents by reviewing submittals, visiting the job site, and overall involvement in the process of construction. Specification Writer [14:12 mark] – Until I came to my current office, I’ve never had a dedicated specification writer. I have either written and assembled all the specifications or we hired a third-party to handle it for us, which for the record, never worked out very well. Reviews drawings and other project information to write and edit project specifications. Uses a thorough understanding of project design requirements to translate project needs for specific materials, equipment, installation, certifications, testing, and methods applicable to the project. Performs product research, assists in material selection, develops and maintains relationships with vendors, performs quality management reviews, and provides technical advice to project teams. Business Development [17:25 mark] – While this doesn’t have to necessarily be an architect, I think it helps. To a certain extent, all the people in leadership positions do business development just be doing good work and making clients happy. Business development is about making connections. It’s building upon the brand that you have established through marketing efforts to connect your audience to you...

https://entrearchitect.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/10/EntreArchitectLive101117preview.jpeg ()EntreArchitect Live with Alex Gore of F9 Productions This week, Mark held his first live interview using Facebook live. Alex Gore from http://www.f9productions.com (F9 Productions) discussed his work with Daniel Libeskind, his firm in Longmont, Colorado, his podcast, http://Insidethefirmpodcast.com (Inside The Firm), sharing the behind-the-scenes with his partner, Lance Cayko, and his book http://amzn.to/2gRcHMY (The Creativity Code). This week on EntreArchitect Podcast, EntreArchitect Live with Alex Gore of http://www.f9productions.com (F9 Productions). Background Alex Gore grew up drawing wars of ants verses bees, playing backyard baseball, and being obsessed with Frank Lloyd Wright. After high school, he joined the national guard as a heavy equipment operator. There, he attended North Dakota State University and received a masters in architecture and construction management. He then worked under the world-famous architect Daniel Libeskind, teamed up with his best friend from college Lance Cayko to start F9 Productions. He’s the cohost of http://www.insidethefirmpodcast.com (Inside the Firm Podcast) and the author of http://amzn.to/2gRcHMY (The Creativity Code). How did you get to work for Daniel Libeskind? Going into Denver, Alex lined up several different interviews when he had a trip planned to be in town. He was back and forth with Libeskind, and was offered an internship first. Though he turned that down, he eventually was offered a full-time position. Did you carry any thoughts over from Libeskind to F9 Productions? Daniel Libeskind always did crazy fun projects, so Alex and Lance have tried to keep doing one fun project a year. They http://www.atlastinyhouse.com (built a tiny house) that was sustainable and cooler looking than traditional tiny houses. The goal was to make a commitment to do something cool every year. What are your thoughts on interning for a star firm? All of us interns worked a ton and were paid an hourly rate. At F9 Productions, interns are paid. When you’re sacrificing your time and energy in a studio culture environment, you have a lot to learn by doing that if that’s what you want to do. For F9 Productions, interns are just colleagues and designers who they work side by side with. How did F9 Productions start? When Alex got laid off by Libeskind, he called Lance and they made some plans. Eventually, Lance got laid off as well and Alex decided to move to Colorado and figure out how to work together. They worked as a tw0-man shop for a few years until they had consistent business in 2013-2014. Now, they have about ten people and even that feels stretched at times. The structure is a two-headed beast. They each have people who mainly work for one of them or the other, and in times of big projects they can pull from the other’s side. Depending on the project, they tend to hand off projects that are a better fit for the other person’s skills. Where did the name for F9 Productions come from? In college, Alex and Lance didn’t know if they really liked each other. When they finally realized each other had some useful skills, they worked closely together. They were on their computers all the time, and F9 was the key to render. They would tease their classmates who wanted to go home at the end of the day by saying, “Go ahead! Just hit F9 and the computer will do the work while you get some rest.” It’s progressed that their different companies now are set up following suit: F10, F11, F12 and F14. Are you going to sell your development units individually? We couldn’t separate the parcels, so they’ll be condos with an HOA. We’ll sell 6 on one side as units, and there’s still talk of renting the two on the other side. Do you think every architect should do development? Alex thinks the majority of...

Recent years have witnessed an enormous amount of reorganization of the corporate sector in the US and in Europe. This paper examines the role of market competition for this trend in corporate reorganization. We find that at intermediate levels of competition the CEO of the corporation decides to have less power inside the firm and to delegate control to lower levels of the firms’ hierarchy. Thus, workers empowerment and the move to flatter firm organizations emerge as an equilibrium when competition is not too tough and not too weak. The model predicts merger waves or waves of outsourcing when countries become more integrated into the world economy as the corporate sector reorganizes in response to an increase in international competition.
