What turns a teenage construction worker into a successful architectural entrepreneur? For Lance Cayco, co-founder of F9 Productions, the journey began at age 13 when his first boss taught him the economics of service businesses while roofing houses in North Dakota. That early lesson planted the seeds for a career spanning architecture, construction, business ownership, and community leadership.Lance's path wasn't without significant challenges. After graduating at the top of his architecture class, the Great Recession delivered a devastating blow—layoffs just nine months into his professional career. This setback became the catalyst for founding F9 Productions, built on a revolutionary premise in the architecture world: prioritizing customer service over design ego. As Lance candidly shares, "There's so many architects out there that insist on it being much more of an art than a business." His firm's competitive advantage? Simply answering the phone when potential clients call. The conversation explores how negative role models shaped Lance's business philosophy. Learning from "awful business owners" who laid him off, he built a firm with no layoffs in 15 years by being a "positive reactionary"—deliberately doing the opposite of what caused his former employers to fail. This approach extends to his podcast, Inside the Firm, which transparently shares business lessons to counter the "victimhood rhetoric" discouraging entrepreneurship among younger generations.Beyond business insights, Lance offers a refreshing perspective on integrating professional success with personal fulfillment through his work with Longmont Community Gardens. "Instead of work-life balance, what if we aim for work-life harmony?" he suggests, describing days that seamlessly blend office work with community gardening. For aspiring entrepreneurs questioning when to start their own venture, his advice is counterintuitive yet compelling: "The Great Depression... We started ours in the Great Recession. It put us in a corner of a corner. We were super hungry every day."Practical, inspiring, and refreshingly honest, Lance's story illuminates how entrepreneurship can create both professional success and meaningful community impact when built on discipline and customer-focused foundations. At the intersection of architecture is art, creativity, design, engineering, sociology, psychology, and inspiration, not to mention survival, sustainability, and comfort. It's been said that architecture is the art we live in. We're all impacted by the communities in which we live, the spaces in which we work, along with the places we visit and experience throughout our lives.  So what is it that makes for good architectural design? How does a space become iconic? How does an architect go from project, to design, to engineering, to completion?  Well, Lance Cayko knows a lot about the answers to those questions, and more.  Lance is a serial entrepreneur and co-founder of the architecture firm, F9 Productions, with Alex Gore. His career in architecture, engineering, and construction spans over two decades and includes numerous design awards including the international Architizer A+ Award for Architecture + Living Small. Their firm earned the #1 spot as BizWest's Mercury 100 Fastest-Growing Private Firms.  As an architect, Lance discussed the various benefits as also being the builder and developer on a project, both from a business success aspect but also in dealing with the various practical considerations of project management at scale. We also discussed the types of projects and clients that he finds most fulfilling to work with.  Lance's perspective on the intersection of design and entrepreneurship yields examples and lessons for architects as well as any other founder or entrepreneur, regardless of field, and how it has influenced his approach to business and achieving an amazing growth rate of 386%(!). He believes that a strong design strategy plays a powerful role in contributing to the success of a business. Lance is a great role model for living a life in full, not just a founder and architect, but also how to be antifragile in a field with more than its fair share of challenges via mindful leadership and creativity. I think you will enjoy this episode with such an authentic and innovative individual.

It's about embracing different ‘lives' within our lifespan stages—20s, 20-40, 40-60, and beyond. I've reached my ‘third life' at 40, prompting a focus on becoming a composed figure amidst chaos, solving problems with a stoic calmness. Thoughts On Breathing Breathing used to begin with gratitude for that initial breath, but it's slipped away. Yet, hiking strenuous mountain trails redefines it. A 17-mile trek for fishing at 11,000 feet or a seemingly easy 3-mile hike with my daughter. That is challenging for her but exhilarating for me. Climbing steep slopes, sweat-drenched, and panting, I pause, leaning against the mountainside, smiling despite the exhaustion. My daughter wonders why. It's simple—the feeling of being alive in those moments. Breathing, in those hikes, signifies unequivocal existence. The intensity of physical exertion validates life. Every breath is a confirmation of being undeniably present, alive, and vibrant.   Bullying Story My childhood bully, Jonas, fueled my drive. Instead of combating him, I channeled his negativity into motivation. I held onto the vision of future success, using his actions as a catalyst. Keeping my focus on the prize—my success in architecture, construction, and personal pursuits—kept me driven. It wasn't about fighting back; it was about harnessing that negative energy as fuel for my ambitions, letting it ignite a fire in me to excel and succeed beyond those bullying moments. As we've researched and worked with firm after firm, a common thread stands out from those firms who have more success than others - the caliber and experience of people working at the firm. This is why the People Playbook is one of the four pillars of the SMART Practice Method. What is the key to having a successful architecture practice? There are many ways to answer this question, and everyone defines success differently. What does success mean to you? Consider this question for a moment. What does success mean to you? I'll guess that your definition of success isn't being financially stretched, burned out or unfulfilled. Recently, I heard an interview with Oprah Winfrey where she said, “no one succeeds alone.” And she repeated it twice. “No one succeeds alone.” So however you define success, consider that you can't have success alone - as an island. What is the key to building a team of people around you - of team members, clients and associates? That's one of the things we touch on in this interview. Alex Gore, co-host of the “Inside the Firm” podcast interviewed me for the Inside the Firm podcast, and I thought you'd want to hear it also, so I'm reposting it here. If you're a podcast listener, you'll definitely want to check out the “Inside the Firm” podcast with Lance Cayko and Alex Gore where they share the behind-the-scenes story as they build their Design-Build firm F9 Productions.  ******* ► Feedback? https://entrearchitect.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/05/AlexGoreandLanceCayko-F9Productions.jpg ()How to Hire a Team That Thrives Lance Cayko and Alex Gore met during their second year as architecture majors at North Dakota State University. While they didn't initially hit it off, the two classmates soon realized they each had qualities to complement the other, and by their third year, the go-getters were working together on all the projects they could and earned the title Renaissance Team from Professor Darryl Booker. By the time they graduated, Lance and Alex knew they'd someday run a business together, but first they went their separate ways with Lance landing in Boulder, Colorado, and Alex in New York City. Then the 2008 recession hit. Both junior architects found themselves out of work. Alex returned to NDSU and earned his construction management degree. By 2010, architecture and construction industries across the country were still struggling, so he joined Lance in Colorado, renting the apartment above him, and the two founded F9 Productions. The company has steadily grown as an architecture, construction, and development firm in Longmont, Colorado from the co-founders to a staff of 11. In 2016, Lance and Alex won the Architizer award for Architecture and Living Small popular vote for their tiny home, Atlas, the build of which was featured on season one, episode 14, of HGTV's Tiny House Big Living. Being business savvy allowed them to earn top ratings, becoming the highest-rated firm for customer satisfaction in Colorado. They've also positioned themselves to build their own projects the way they want, including their new business headquarters. Their education at NDSU taught them the balance between the science and art of architecture to enhance lives through design. As they've grown the business, Lance and Alex strive to empower the people they hire. They pride themselves on developing employees and growing them into leaders to add to the fabric of professionals in architecture. Some, think the idea of the modern architect becoming the modern master builder is absurd, so here are the questions: • Can architects re-establish the role of master builder? • Should architects reclaim that role? • Should you become the master builder? Share your thoughts and opinions, and ask your questions.

Alex Gore from http://www.f9productions.com (F9 Productions) discussed his work with Daniel Libeskind, his firm in Longmont, Colorado, his podcast, http://Insidethefirmpodcast.com (Inside The Firm), sharing the behind-the-scenes with his partner, Lance Cayko, and his book http://amzn.to/2gRcHMY (The Creativity Code). This week on EntreArchitect Podcast, EntreArchitect Live with Alex Gore of http://www.f9productions.com (F9 Productions). Background Alex Gore grew up drawing wars of ants verses bees, playing backyard baseball, and being obsessed with Frank Lloyd Wright. After high school, he joined the national guard as a heavy equipment operator. There, he attended North Dakota State University and received a masters in architecture and construction management. He then worked under the world-famous architect Daniel Libeskind, teamed up with his best friend from college Lance Cayko to start F9 Productions. He’s the cohost of http://www.insidethefirmpodcast.com (Inside the Firm Podcast) and the author of http://amzn.to/2gRcHMY (The Creativity Code). How did you get to work for Daniel Libeskind? Going into Denver, Alex lined up several different interviews when he had a trip planned to be in town. He was back and forth with Libeskind, and was offered an internship first. Though he turned that down, he eventually was offered a full-time position. Did you carry any thoughts over from Libeskind to F9 Productions? Daniel Libeskind always did crazy fun projects, so Alex and Lance have tried to keep doing one fun project a year. They http://www.atlastinyhouse.com (built a tiny house) that was sustainable and cooler looking than traditional tiny houses. The goal was to make a commitment to do something cool every year. What are your thoughts on interning for a star firm? All of us interns worked a ton and were paid an hourly rate. At F9 Productions, interns are paid. When you’re sacrificing your time and energy in a studio culture environment, you have a lot to learn by doing that if that’s what you want to do. For F9 Productions, interns are just colleagues and designers who they work side by side with. How did F9 Productions start? When Alex got laid off by Libeskind, he called Lance and they made some plans. Eventually, Lance got laid off as well and Alex decided to move to Colorado and figure out how to work together. They worked as a tw0-man shop for a few years until they had consistent business in 2013-2014. Now, they have about ten people and even that feels stretched at times. The structure is a two-headed beast. They each have people who mainly work for one of them or the other, and in times of big projects they can pull from the other’s side. Depending on the project, they tend to hand off projects that are a better fit for the other person’s skills. Where did the name for F9 Productions come from? In college, Alex and Lance didn’t know if they really liked each other. When they finally realized each other had some useful skills, they worked closely together. They were on their computers all the time, and F9 was the key to render. They would tease their classmates who wanted to go home at the end of the day by saying, “Go ahead! Just hit F9 and the computer will do the work while you get some rest.” It’s progressed that their different companies now are set up following suit: F10, F11, F12 and F14. Are you going to sell your development units individually? We couldn’t separate the parcels, so they’ll be condos with an HOA. We’ll sell 6 on one side as units, and there’s still talk of renting the two on the other side. Do you think every architect should do development? Alex thinks the majority of...
