We survived the Facebook outage of 2024. That means go find us and like the page. This week we gear up and look ahead to St. Patrick's Day. David gets that good red beer in Conway's Irish Ale. It takes him back to after prom getting a sixer of some Killians. In a plot twist, Gary has Karrikin's Bourbon Lemonade. Should have been refreshing but you'll just have to hear him tell you how it is. A new top bourbon was crowned by Barleycorn, whatever that is. Is it legit? We shoot the breeze fill in the rest of the time with nonsense.Enjoy Want to grow a better beard and become a legend? As we move to the month of the Irish we might as well start reviewing some Irish beer styles. This week we discuss Irish Red Ales. This is a style that has a very distinctive malt flavor that showcases both notes of toffee and caramel. While the true Irish Red Ales are lower in alcohol, American versions often come in a t much higher payloads. Style examples: 1. Guinness – Smithwick's Red Ale 2. Sam Adam's - Irish Red 3. Thirsty Dog – Irish Red Setter · ABV: 3.8 – 5.0% · IBUs: 18-28 · Color: 9-14 Our sample beer for the week: Great Lakes Brewing Company – Conway's Irish Ale 6.3% and 25 IBU. Beer as described by brewer: A pint for Pa Conway! Our co-owners' grandfather and policeman who'd likely uphold that an Irish Ale with full-bodied caramel malt flavors is just the ticket. This week I travel to Great Lakes Brewing Company in Cleveland, Ohio. I sat down with Michael Williams who does brand coordination and marketing at GLBC. During this interview we learn about the oldest brewery in Ohio and how it came to be. We also talked about the history of the building as it pertained to Eliot Ness and the mysterious bullet holes that may or may not have been intended for Mr. Ness. We also discussed the 2023 beer release calendar that recently just came out which included a few new additions like a low cal watermelon wheat, a couple of new IPAs, a new stout, and the latest edition to the GLBC family which is a hard tea that is set to be released sometime in April. During the interview we tried some classics including: Dortmunder Gold, Conway's Irish Ale, Eliot Ness Amber Lager, Dank Demon DIPA, an experimental Hazy, and Barrel Aged Black Out Stout. Are you ready to start Rethinking Drynking®…? We're delighted to spend time with Richard Clark, founder of Drynks Unlimited a.k.a “Smashed.” Smashed is on a mission to create a portfolio of alcohol-free brands that deliver an ethically sourced, authentic, natural taste that will let drinkers forget that they aren't drinking something alcoholic. Drynks Unlimited is the only UK drinks business to invest in a state-of-the-art cool vacuumed distillation kit that gently de-alcoholizes full-strength drinks. This produces delicious alcohol-free drinks that taste just as good as a quality alcoholic version. Rocket Pod listeners will get a feel for the journey Richard has been on throughout his career and the true visionary and NOLO drinks entrepreneur he has become today. Early on in his career, Richard launched brands such as Pepsi Max and Caffrey's Irish Ale and has honed skills in building teams that complement one another. He talks to us about building a defense strategy around his weaknesses, and what it takes to build a successful consumer drinks brand. Richard tells it as it is. Smashed has a phenomenal range of non-alcoholic beers and ciders. Being T-total myself for nearly 9 years, it's a true genius product, with great taste. Richards's clever marketing slogans such as “Get Smashed Anytime” will soon be appearing on our radars. “Real beer, real taste, real alcohol-free.” Watch this space. #rocketpod #visionaries #businessgrowth Thank you to flexy for supporting this episode you can find out more: flexy.shop You can contact Richard via LinkedIn here. Today we're talking deconstruction, or reconstruction as we like to call it. Yes, that's basically what the entire concept of this podcast is about but we wanted to get into the nitty gritty of it a little bit. We'll look at a few questions like; how to ask questions without losing our faith, how to doubt even as we grow, how to continually reconstruct, and so on! It's not often we see multiple red ales at Systembolaget. We had to do a red episode. Nynäshamns Ångbryggeri has released Roxen India Red Ale. It's a 7% abv smooth, caramel malty treat. This was a real surprise. It's an annual release and one we'll pick up every year. Sullivan's Brewing Company is from Ireland. They have released a true classic style red ale called Maltings Irish Ale. It's a fun bar friendly red ale that will please anyone looking for a relaxing beer at the end of the day.
This week Bob and I celebrate the 50th episode. Actually, we just mention it and then we drink a really huge barrel aged Imperial Stout in commemoration. Bob and I talk about the beer fest that took place in Medina this past weekend, and in the news and views segment we tackle the topic of satellite tap rooms versus distribution expansion as a means of growing a brewery. Remember, you can email the show at feedback@thebrewerofseville.com and submit questions for our upcoming interviews, and now we have a new after-hours drunk hotline for the podcast. In the second half of the show, I travel up to 8th Day Brewing in Auburn, Ohio, and talk with one of the owners/brewer Matt Boddy. We discussed how he went from working a full-time construction job to becoming a full-time brewery owner and brewer. During the interview we sampled some amazing beers from Matt including a killer Kolsch, a fantastic Irish Ale, a solid West Coast IPA, and an amazing NEIPA. This week the boys drink some Irish Ale from Boulevard Brewing and talk about our favorite video games. Brian also tells a totally regular story about a man yelling at him from his car.
In the first half of episode 104 Dan, Chris, Katie, and Ian discuss the untimely demise of Anthem, and whether or not its abandonment by BioWare/EA was justified or a sad abandonment of a promising idea. In the second half the crew discusses video games *as* education while Chris, Katie, and Ian try to come up with good excuses for why they couldn't turn in their book reports! We're also celebrating St. Patty's day a bit late this year, so we're enjoying some Smithwick's Irish Ale (and Left Hand's Milk Stout). Join us!
This week we dive into the origin of St. Patrick himself. We also explore the fairy universe with some leprechaun myths. The beers featured on this episode were Maggie's Irish Ale from Saugatuck Brewing Co. and O'Brien's Irish Red Ale from Rockford Brewing Company.
Welcome once again to another yearly venture into everything Irish. In this week's episode we invite good ol' Guest #2 Ben Revier back along with nephew Tucker. Nox gives a little lecture on who Patrick actually was and what he did to become a saint, then we dive right into it. In this episode we split our tastings into two groups: beers, then whisk(e)ys. In the first group we sample and review Boulevard's Irish Ale, Swing Barrel's Rustica Irish Red Ale, and Smithwicks Red Ale. In the second group we sip on Slane Irish Whiskey, Tullamore D.E.W. 12 year, Redbreast Single Pot Still 12 year, and West Cork's Glengariff Series Peat Charred Cask, which was super similar to episode 64's Bog Oak Charred from last year.
