The families of the remaining ISIS brides stuck in Syria are preparing to launch a landmark legal challenge to force the government to bring them back to Australia. A young Sydney woman who tragically died after a horse riding accident has been described as an “angel” by friends and family. A young Queensland woman suffering depression and pleading for help was repeatedly told to go home by staff at a Townsville hospital after self-harming – and took her own life just hours after being discharged yet again. The AFL has banned nine fans for life this season after a crackdown on the racial abuse of players from the stands. And South Australians face an almost $3bn bill to fix the state's crumbling roads amid mounting concerns that motorists are being put at risk from a neglected maintenance backlog. For years their fate was unknown, but after the collapse of the IS caliphate, one of the girls Shamima Begum was sensationally discovered in a camp for IS women and children. Begum came to be seen as a poster girl for terrorism and in 2019 Britain revoked her citizenship - a decision which continues to divide public and political opinion. Investigative BBC journalist Josh Baker travelled to Syria to meet Begum, and traces her journey from London teenager to IS bride in his gripping podcast I'm Not a Monster - the Shamima Begum Story.

One of Australia's 'ISIS brides' has been charged and appeared in court for entering ISIS-controlled areas of Syria. Three months after four women and thirteen children were returned to Australia from a Syrian refugee detention camp, Mariam Raad was arrested Thursday after new evidence confirmed she had willingly entered ISIS-run regions of Syria. Australian authorities confirm that Mariam Raad was aware that her husband was involved with ISIS, and it was alleged she entered the region to join her husband, knowing his role within the Islamic State as a recruiter. Australian correspondent Murray Olds says she's due to make another court appearance, where she's expected to be sentenced. LISTEN ABOVESee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Over in Australia, there has been plenty of public concern as the first set of 'Isis brides' return to the region. Four women and thirteen children who travelled from Australia with partners who were aligned with Isis recently got repatriated back as they were still citizens. Their repatriation has been viewed as a security risk, with plenty of Australians being concerned about these people posing a safety threat. The Australian government is preparing to launch a mission to rescue dozens of Australian women and children trapped in Syrian detention camps. More than 20 Australian women and more than 40 children – the widows, sons and daughters of slain or jailed Islamic State combatants – remain within the al-Hol and Roj detention camps in north-east Syria. Many of the women held in the camps say they were coerced or tricked into travelling to Syria by husbands who have since died. Most of the Australian children are under six; several were born in the camps. We're joined by Katja Theodorakis, head of ASPI's counter terrorism program to talk to us about who these women and children are, and what their future looks like.
