To say 2020 was a difficult year is an understatement. In this episode, hear what Tim's family did to literally and figuratively bury the year. #FaithFamilyFriends And as Dr Jarrod Spencer said last week: the good of the past, and the bad of the past — they're both in the past. The difference is — we can learn and become stronger from the bad — if we allow ourselves to. “Out of these ashes beauty will rise.” — Steven Curtis Chapman "I'd save every day like a treasure and then ...Again, I would spend them with you" — Jim Croce

Tim and Steve continue the conversation from last week with Dr Jarrod Spencer from Mind of the Athlete, LLC. Some of the things you'll hear include: Reset every morning with prayer Another reminder to focus on today, because yesterday does — not — matter — anymore "What-ifs" occur when our minds drift too long, too intensely, or too fearfully into the future Look for those who have done what you want to do, gone where you want to go, act how you want to act, etc Take pages out of other people's playbooks; Actively search for mentors and be open to them when they appear Mentorship can come in the form of reading books, watching videos, etc; With this, we can be mentored by people from long ago, including sages and saints
This week on the podcast we delve into an incredibly important topic, the mental health and well-being of our athletes. With the recent withdrawal of one of the world's top tennis players, Naomi Osaka, from the French Open due to depression and social anxiety, this topic has been in the news a lot recently. There have been two distinct camps; one that says you make millions of dollars so suck it up and play, and the other that recognizes that just becasue these athletes are so exceptional in one area of their life does not mean they are not struggling in others. One of the people leading that discussion recently on CNN and the BBC is our friend Dr Jarrod Spencer. Dr. Jarrod Spencer (@jarrod_spencer) is president and founder of Mind of the Athlete, LLC, a sports psychology company committed to improving the emotional health of athletes (www.MindOfTheAthlete.com). He is the author of Mind of the Athlete: Clearer Mind, Better Performance and the co-author of the book the The Sky Is NOT The Limit: Discovering the True North for Your Life's Path. Dr. Spencer serves as the sports psychologist for several professional teams and individual professionals athletes. He also works closely with NCAA teams, including teams at Princeton University, Lehigh University and University of Maryland. He maintains a private practice wherein he provides one-on-one coaching for athletes and business leaders. He has been featured in CNN, BBC, USA Today, New York Daily News and ESPN Radio. Dr. Spencer is a frequent guest on WFMZ Morning News in the NY/NJ/PA region. He also starred in the TV Show “What the Heck Were They Thinking?!” with former Heavyweight Boxing Champion Larry Holmes. Additionally, Dr. Spencer created and starred on the TV show Mind of the Athlete. He has recorded 13 CDs, as well as over 500 podcasts and videos. Dr. Spencer has extensive training and experience in the field of health and sports psychology. Before earning a Doctor of Psychology Degree from Argosy University, formerly known as The Illinois School of Professional Psychology, he earned his Master's Degree in Clinical Psychology from West Chester University and his Bachelor's Degree in Psychobiology from Lafayette College. Dr. Spencer professionally trained at The Jersey Shore Medical Center, Northwestern Neuropsychological Association, and The Diamond Headache Clinic. He is a licensed psychologist in New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Maryland, Michigan and Virginia. Dr. Spencer is also a member of The American Psychological Association, Pennsylvania Psychological Association, and Lehigh Valley Psychological and Counseling Association. Influenced by views in neuroscience, psychoanalysis, Christianity, and peak performance literature, Dr. Spencer has a heart to assist athletes in attaining peak performance through sound emotional health. Episode 81 brings us back to Bethlehem PA, to talk with Dr. Jarrod Spencer, Sports Psychologist at Mind of the Athlete. Last time Jarrod was on the show in episode 50 we talked about the athlete transition to life after sports. However, this time we spoke about a topic that I am very curious and passionate about, which is how our society's definition of toughness and masculinity affects athletes. This was our summer intern Alex's first field trip for the podcast, hence the nice action shots we have from the day (below). George Bright, who has close to 30 years of experience in college athletics, also sat in on our conversation. Dr. Spencer Knowledge Bombs Dr. Jarrod Spencer, Sports Psychologist, Mind of the Athlete Dr. Spencer, Kevin, George Bright Below you will find an outline of our conversation: Dr. Spencer's definition of toughness: like the classic definition; being comfortable being uncomfortable (being in
This point in the fall season is often a time when many athletes athletic career's come to an end. For many, senior day/night comes and goes faster than you were able to process the fact that it was most likely the last time you will ever step foot on the field/court/etc. For others, maybe a career ending injury shattered your dreams of playing at the next level. Regardless, a day will come when playing sports comes to an end for every athlete. Unfortunately, there usually no roadmap, lesson plan, tutorial or guide given to you to show you what your next step should be or what will fill the void left your life. After I suffered a career ending brain injury during a high school football game, feelings of confusion, hopelessness and insecurity quickly crept into my life with full vigor. I only ever knew myself as an athlete, a football player and a baseball player. What was I without these outlets to prove my "worth?" Honestly, I felt like I was nothing and a nobody. These feelings stuck around with me for close to 4 years. Fortunately, there is help out there and my goal with this episode is to prevent other athletes from feeling how I felt. This week on the podcast we hear from Dr. Jarrod Spencer, Sports Psychologist, President and Founder of Mind of the Athlete. He is the creator of the Mind of the Athlete Program, a cutting edge video and audio sports psychology curriculum. This program, made up of sixteen videos, sixteen accompanying worksheets, and ten CD’s, is currently used worldwide in countries such as South Africa, Ireland, and South Korea. He is also author of the book The Sky is Not the Limit: Discovering the True North for Your Life's Path. Dr. Jarrod Spencer works with professional, Olympic, college, and high school athletes, coaches, and teams across the country. In addition to serving as the Sports Psychologist for athletic teams at such schools as University of Maryland, Old Dominion University, Lehigh University, and Lafayette College, Dr. Spencer also works individually with athletes from University of Michigan, University of North Carolina, Ohio State, Cal Poly, Princeton, and many more. As an athlete, Dr. Spencer was an All-State high school wrestler who captained his team to back-to-back New Jersey State Championships. While in college, he was a record-setting tailback for the Lafayette College football team until his career ended due to suffering multiple concussions. Dr. Spencer knows all too well of the mental and emotional struggles athletes face in their search to find an identity outside of sports. In this episode, Dr. Spencer gives you the tools to make this transition easier than ours was. Some of our talking points can be found below: Mind of the Athlete Sports Psychologist, Dr. Jarrod Spencer, discusses how to pay attention to the emotions associated with rehabbing an injury and steps necessary to recover properly.
This week on the Heads 'N Tales podcast I traveled down to Princeton University to interview Chuck Dibilio. I asked my friend Cory Weissman (Episode 6) to join me for this interview because, like Chuck, he is also a stroke survivor. Chuck went from breaking Ivy League Rushing Records, to being told he could never play football again when he suffered a life-threatening stroke after his freshman season. Prior to the stroke, Chuck became first Princeton player to earn Ivy League Rookie of the Year honors since 1983 and was named to the first-team All-Ivy League after finishing second in the Ivy League in rushing with 1,068 yards (6th best in Princeton History). It was only a couple of months after this impressive season that Chuck suffered the stoke that changed his life forever. It was interesting to have both Cory and Chuck's perspectives in the interview because they were affected by the strokes oppositely. Cory was effected physically through paralysis and Chuck struggled cognitively, especially with speech and writing. Chuck gave us some great advice on finding an identity after your sport is taken away from you whether it is one game, a season or a career. In this episode Chuck specifically talks about the devastation and anger he felt when the team doctor told him he could never play football again. Chuck doesn't know where he would be today if it weren't for the work he did with Sport Psychologist, Dr. Jarrod Spencer (soon to be on the podcast). You can subscribe to Jarrod's blog through the link in the prior sentence. Specifically, Chuck talks about "Following the energy" in transitioning to a life without football. This means that you should search for things in the world that give you that feeling in your gut that football, or whatever sport, gave you. For Chuck (and myself), CrossFit gave him that feeling back. Below is a documentary on Chuck's transition to life after football: Before Chuck went to Princeton he was a stand-out athlete at Nazareth High School. Chuck earned second-team all-state honors at running back and rushed for more than 2,000 yards as a senior. In that season, he averaged 9.2 yards per carry and scored 32 touchdowns. Chuck's career numbers at Nazareth were 4,902 all-purpose, 4,366 rushing yards and scored 57 career touchdowns. It should come as no surprise that these stats earned Chuck nine school records and nine conference records. As Cory alluded to in the interview, Chuck also lettered in basketball and scored 1,375 career points and earned first-team all-conference and all-area honors. Chuck also put's the "dumb jock" stereotype to rest because he was also a member of the National Honor Society. I'm pretty sure graduating with a degree from Princeton University speaks for itself. Lastly, Chuck's senior highlight tape is featured below. His athleticism, determination and work ethic are obvious though-out the clip, however it is the run at 4:23 that impresses me most. On this play it looks to be about 1st & 10 from the +12. Chuck receives a pitch and proceeds to run-over two defenders on his way to scoring a touchdown. We talked about situations like this during the interview, when everyone in the stadium knows you are getting ball and you have
