Mid-distance track sensation, Tinoda Matsatsa, joins the show today amidst an impressive sophomore campaign at Georgetown. Tinoda, who hails from Boyds, Maryland, is off to an electric start to his collegiate running career, and seems poised to continue to chase records and wins no matter where he goes. So far in his young college career he has run the following PRs: 48.88 in the 400m; 1:45.17 in the 800m; 2:16.84 in the 1,000m; and 3:54.15 in the mile. If you're staring at those numbers–mouth agape–you're not alone. In January of 2024, Tinoda set a new NCAA record for the indoor 1,000m run with a time of 2:18.05. Almost exactly a year later, he lowered that time–running a 2:16.84 this past January 18 at the Nittany Lion Challenge. Tinoda has had a great start to his sophomore year, running his aforementioned mile PR at the BU Sharon Colyear-Danville Season Opener, coming in second. Tinoda's parents moved to the United States several years before he was born. He went to St. Andrew's Episcopal School in Maryland. While at prep school, the 5-foot-9 senior became just the 20th runner in prep school history to break 4 minutes in the mile. He capped his senior season with a state record in the mile; followed by a win the 800m run at the Brooks PR invitational; and then ended his season winning the national title with a state-record 1:47.61 in the 800m. Prior to becoming a running star, Tinoda loved soccer. He was a striker on his team and excelled at the sport. He even hid from his middle school track coach because soccer was his priority. His mother eventually convinced him to do track to stay in shape, and the rest is history. We're thrilled for you to hear this and more from our conversation with another star-in-the-making, who will surely be making noise in the coming months and years on the collegiate and professional track and field circuit. In today's conversation, Tinoda takes me through stories from how he got into the sport of running, how he progressed in high school, his training leading into his sub-4min mile in HS, his time at Georgetown thus far, his dreams for LA 2028, and so much more. Tap into the Tinoda Matsatsa Special. If you enjoy the podcast, please consider following us on Spotify and Apple Podcasts and giving us a five-star review! Molly Rowe, newly appointed Executive director of the Hilliard Art Museum, joins Discover Lafayette to discuss her love of the arts and working with artists. Molly has worked with arts and culture organizations such as the New York City Ballet and Savannah College of Art and Design, and Fortune 500 companies such as Google and The New York Times. Born and raised in Lafayette, Molly's mother was an antique dealer; from an very early age, Molly was exposed to art, antiques, antiques, provenance, and the research that goes into collecting and telling stories about objects. She grew up appreciating art and objects, learning about other cultures and people. At the age of 18, after graduating from the Episcopal School of Acadiana and ready to see the world, she left Lafayette at 18 to attend Cornell University where she earned Bachelor's degrees in History and French literature. Molly then earned an MBA in Strategic Management from Tulane, and completed graduate work in Art History at Sorbonne University and Ecole Normale Supérieure in Paris. Molly's first job was writing for the President and Co-Founder of the Savannah College of Art and Design, Paula Wallace. "It's an institution that started with a dream of one woman who was an educator and now it is globally recognized. It is one of, if not the, largest private art institution in the world. It is a mission driven arts organization, and I learned so much about how it was run, how to build organizations of that nature, how to inspire people through that." The experiences Molly gained help define her career. "Whenever I started working with Paula Wallace, I envisioned myself to be a writer who was going to go on and do doctorate work in literature. I was very always interested in languages and storytelling. But through my work with her at SCAD, I realized that art has it own language and communicates things that words can't. Through studying art and learning about art and exhibiting art, working with artists, you're able to transcend time, cultures, and geography.” Molly shared, "We so often think that being able to create an art object or a painting defines creativity. But some of the most creative people I know are creative in business. I've built my career on working with artists and supporting artists and building businesses with them." After her work at SCAD, she moved to New York and was employed by consultants who worked with arts organizations, museums, institutions, and galleries based all over the world. She eventually opened her own consulting firm with that same focus, at the intersection of arts, education and business,. Molly worked with over 50 institutions internationally, from the United States to Europe, South America, and Asia. Molly says, "It's that work that allowed me to consult with incredible organizations such as Google, New York City Ballet, and The New York Times. My work with them was always focused around art and culture. I think so many businesses recognize the power of art and culture; in order to get a product into the hands of people, they have to tap into how their desired audience communicates, what they like, what they read, what they listen to." Molly explained, "Being able to tap into an audience's culture means you're going to be working with artists. It means you're going to be working with the people that are creating and building that culture. That's where I came in, as this sort of middle person, who would help organizations figure out how they were going to bring their product to people. It was always around working with artists. The other side of that was not only making sure it was good for business, but also that it was good for rhe artists. If we look at Louisiana, one of our biggest economies is cultural tourism. We don't think enough about who is benefiting from that. My job was always making sure that artists were represented appropriately and that were being compensated and rewarded in the right way.
Monte Criswell is a songwriter. A big time, bad-a$$ songwriter. 200 of his songs have been recorded by Nashville artists and he's had several number 1 hits and a few Grammy nominations. His passion from a young age was to be in music. From the University of Alabama (and St Paul's Episcopal School in Mobile, Alabame before that) he declined a law school enrollment at Syracuse and went to Nashville where he hustled and slept in his car looking for a break. Today's he's a known name in the country music scene, having written for George Strait, Darius Rucker, Trace Adkins, Morgan Wallen, and many many more. After a days-long search, a 34-year-old teacher who was allegedly kidnapped while on the run was apparently found dead this week. The Memphis Police Department was summoned at 7:45 a.m. on Sept. 2 to help the University of Memphis Police Department in identifying a missing person, Eliza "Liza" Fletcher. Fletcher was jogging at Central and Zach Curlin around 4:20 a.m. when a "unknown man approached her" and "forced" her into an SUV, according to Memphis Police. Cleotha Abston, 38, was arrested two days later on accusations of exceptionally aggravated kidnapping and tampering with evidence, but Fletcher remained missing. During the investigation, Cleotha's brother, Mario Abston, was reportedly detained on drug charges, but he is "not believed to be involved to Fletcher's kidnapping." According to inmate records, Abston is also charged with identity theft, tampering with/faking evidence, theft of property, and fraudulent use/illegal possession of a credit/debit card. On Tuesday, September 6, Memphis Police said they discovered Fletcher's body in the 1600 block of Victor Street and charged Abston with first-degree murder and first-degree murder in the commission of kidnapping, in addition to the other criminal charges he faces. In a press conference on Tuesday, Memphis Police Chief Cerelyn Davis and other law enforcement officials said that Fletcher's remains had been discovered in an abandoned duplex in South Memphis. According to WREG-TV Abston was allegedly spotted cleaning out his black SUV near where Fletcher was discovered. During the press conference, Davis stated that detectives "haven't obtained very much information" from Abston during questioning. According to the Memphis Commercial Appeal, Fletcher was a junior kindergarten teacher at St. Mary's Episcopal School and previously taught at Promise Academy in Nashville. Her spouse, Richard Fletcher III, and she have two children. He reported her missing after she did not return from her run a few hours later. According to the Commercial Appeal's affidavit, Fletcher was running on the University of Memphis campus when a black GMC Terrain drove by her and paused, waiting for her to pass. According to the affidavit, "A male left the black GMC Terrain, raced aggressively at the victim, and then forced Eliza Fletcher into the vehicle's passenger side. There looked to be a fight throughout this kidnapping." Abston was released from prison in November 2020 after serving a 24-year sentence for aggravated abduction. Fletcher's grandpa, Joseph "Joe" Orgill III, controlled a large hardware distribution empire, according to WREG. In a statement, Fletcher's family said, "This terrible loss has broken our hearts and devastated us. Liza brought excitement to everyone she met, including her family, friends, colleagues, students, parents, members of her Second Presbyterian Church congregation, and everyone else who knew her. Now is the moment to remember and celebrate how amazing she was, as well as to assist those who loved her so deeply. We are grateful for all of the messages of love and care that have been sent our way. We are eternally grateful to local, state, and federal law enforcement for their persistent efforts to find Liza and bring the perpetrator of this heinous act to justice. We hope that everyone, especially media representatives, understands the family's need to grieve privately and without outside interference during this difficult time." A class of Harrisburg third grade students created a social justice quilt last year with hopes to bring awareness and make a change. This year the quilt, which was created by St. Stephen's Episcopal School students, has been displayed at the MLK City Government Center in Harrisburg. The quilt consists of fabric squares, where each child depicted themes around identity and social justice. JoAnn Baldwin, a third grade teacher at the Episcopal school, called the class who participated in this project, the “change makers” which set the tone before they were put to the task. JoAnn, thank you so much for joining us today to discuss this topic.Support WITF: https://www.witf.org/support/give-now/See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
Colt Power a Dallas, TX native graduated from the Episcopal School of Dallas before earning his BA in Business from the University of Notre Dame. While at Notre Dame, Colt was a goalie on the D1 Men's Lacrosse team all four years, earning Big East Conference Academic All-Star in both 2010 and 2011. Projected to graduate December, 2022, Colt is currently an MBA candidate at the SMU Cox School of Business.Sports and fitness have always been a very important part of his life, but prior to discovering cannabidiol (CBD) he was dealing with multiple lingering multiple orthopedic sports injuries that would swell during and after exercise, sometimes preventing him from finishing and sometimes shutting him down for days. In search of relief, he tried everything from Tylenol to Advil, ice packs to heating pads, ibuprofen to acetaminophen - yet the swelling and pain persisted. Finally, in 2019, he began taking CBD products daily and quickly I was able to return to high intensity exercise without 90% of the pain or swelling. It surprisingly kept working day after day, month after month. As he did research and investigated the market for the best CBD products, it was difficult to identify brands and products reliably delivering on quality, availability, lab testing, etc. This made it even more uncomfortable to confidently recommend CBD products to friends or family. In October, 2020, following countless hours of research, planning, and discussion – he and his wife (Reagan) set out build a 100% Texan, 100% indoor-grown hemp company that produced clean, high quality, trusted CBD products. They immediately got their Hemp Producer license and Power Biopharms was born. Colt brings nearly 10 years experience in commercial real estate advisory and consultation to the hemp/cannabis industry. Colt aims to leverage his prior experience with commercial site selection, tenant advisory, design-build / build-to-suit development, investment sales and sale-leasebacks within the blossoming hemp/cannabis industry . Most types users in the hemp/cannabis industry, from cultivators and extractors to product manufacturers, labs and retail stores, nearly all have extremely unique requirements and specifications for their properties and operations. I look forward to working on real estate projects for the industry, helping companies secure their ideal properties and investors maximize value via a deep understanding of the niche market. Prior to founding Power Biopharms, Colt joined NAI Robert Lynn's Fort Worth office in 2012 as a commercial real estate broker specializing in tenant representation, consulting and advisory. After nearly 10 years of experience representing both tenants and landlords, dealing with office, medical and flex/warehouse properties, and managing lease, sale and investment transactions, Colt has completed more than 250 real estate transactions totaling $240+ million in value and accounting for more than 1,500,000 square feet. In 2017, Colt earned both the CCIM (Certified Commercial Investment Member) and SIOR (Society of Office and Industrial Realtors) professional designations, making him one of the youngest brokers in the country to achieve both.
