In this exclusive One-on-One interview with second-year Cincinnati Bengals wide receiver Andrei Iosivas, Dave Lapham checks in with one of the top Bengals training camp performers. Coming off a rookie season that saw Iosivas play in 16 games with one start while catching 15 passes, including four for touchdowns, the 6-foot3, 205-pound receiver was realistic about his future as a football player until he saw a growth spurt, going from 130-pounds before dedicating himself to hit the weight room. Having earned All-Ivy League honors in football and All-American honors in track and field, Iosivas worked his way up to become a sixth-round draft pick by the Bengals in 2023 and now looks like a player who could have a breakout year two as a new primary target of Bengals quarterback Joe Burrow. Learn more about his journey to the NFL in this exclusive One-on-One interview on Dave Lapham In The Trenches, presented by First Star Logistics.

Penn State football's first dip into the transfer portal didn't come at either of their most prominent and public positions. Instead of a wide receiver or a cornerback, special teams coach Stacy Collins struck first, signing Columbia kicker Alex Felkins as a preferred walk-on to the program. Felkins sits down for an exclusive interview with Blue White Illustrated's Sean Fitz to discuss his journey to Penn State and why he chose the Nittany Lions. Subscribe to Blue White Illustrated on YouTube, so you don't miss any exclusive interviews. Penn State's kicking situation has been inconsistent for the past two years, with punter Jordan Stout filling all three special teams kicking roles in 2021 before Jake Pinegar retook his job in 2022 and finished the regular season 12-16 on field goals and 52-54 on extra points. With Pinegar moving on and highly-rated freshman Sander Sahaydak yet to earn any playing time, the Nittany Lions pounced quickly on Felkins, a two-time All-Ivy League honoree as a kicker. While Penn State's need for a kicker with experience is clear, what drew Felkins to Happy Valley? The Oklahoma native shares his reasons for picking the Nittany Lions with Fitz and describes his situation at Columbia. Felkins also described what sort of atmosphere he's looking for and how State College itself drew him to the program. Next, the duo discussed his time at Columbia and what adversity he faced while with the Lions. He tells Fitz about a significant injury he overcame and how grueling the process of returning to play was for him. He also describes his game and what he thinks he can bring to Penn State. The senior kicker also explains how Penn State got in contact with him, how his relationship with special team's coach Stacy Collins has developed, and what sort of competition or playing time he's expecting at Penn State next year. Two former Cincinnati Bengals roommates get together on the latest episode of In The Trenches with Dave Lapham, presented by First Star Logistics. A multi-sport athlete at Villa Park High School in California, Pat McInally turned down playing basketball at UCLA under legendary coach John Wooden to play football at Harvard. At Harvard, McInally would become a two-time football first-team All-Ivy League performer before being drafted in the 1975 NFL Draft. Leading up to the draft, McInally scored the only recorded perfect score on the famed Wonderlic test, then was drafted in the fifth round of the draft by the Bengals. However, his start in professional football was delayed when he suffered a broken leg in the College All-Star Game against the Pittsburgh Steelers, missing the 1975 season. He returned in 1976 and played his entire career with the Bengals ending in 1985. After his playing career ended, McInally conceived the Starting Lineup series of Action Figures with Cincinnati-based Kenner. McInally talks about his life on and off the field, why he's excited about the return of the Starting Lineup series with Hasbro, and how he and his family are still big fans of the Bengals with huge expectations in 2022. __________ To enter the Dave Lapham In The Trenches One Million YouTube Views Celebration, go to the following link. Isaiah Kacyvenski is one of the most decorated Ivy League football players of all time. While at Harvard, he won Ivy League Rookie of the Year and then followed that up with All-Ivy League first-team honors over his final three seasons. He received the Nils V. “Swede” Nelson Award, which is given to "best, most academically talented" football player in New England, and also the Harvard University Male Athlete of the Year following his senior season. After Harvard, Kacyvenski was selected by the Seattle Seahawks in 2000, becoming the highest draft pick in Harvard history (fourth round, No. 199 overall. Beyond his contributions as a linebacker, he was a pivotal player on the Seahawks' special teams and helped in their run to Super Bowl XL. More impressive than any on-field accomplishment, however, is what Kacyvenski overcame just to have the opportunity to play football in the first place. He dealt with bouts of homelessness as a kid and the tragic loss of his mother during his senior year of high school. That power of will is what keeps driving him as he enters the next phase of his professional career. Last year, Kacyvenski announced a $55 million dollar early-stage venture fund focused on health, wellness, media and content; the fund is called Will Ventures. Along with fellow former Harvard football player Brian Reilly, as well as other Harvard student-athlete graduates Kirby Porter and Alexis Nocolia, Kacyvenski is seeking out “relentless entrepreneurs with the will to change the world.” About The Game Plan The Game Plan is a weekly SportTechie podcast hosted by venture capitalists Jay Kapoor and Tim Katt. (https://atgridiron.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/08/ATG-Ross.png) Ross played 7 seasons in the NFL suiting up with the Redskins, Cowboys, Bills, Patriots and Browns. With his dad being only 5’ 9” he is a surprisingly big guy. His size comes from his mothers’ side of the family. He also had some pretty good basket ball skills and often would bring the ball up the court even though he was such a big guy. For University he chose Princeton, which made his grandmother extremely proud. He excelled at Princeton, on the field and off. He was All-Ivy League in 2000 and a 2 time Academic All-American as well. His on-field success didn’t translate into NFL opportunities for him. It was actually his agent that got him an opportunity to tryout with a team due to his connections in the league. He made the most of it and performed well enough to earn a spot. After football he was fortunate to be offered a job writing for Sports Illustrated almost immediately. From there he did broadcasting with ESPN and Westwood One. He was a podcasting pioneer having a podcast years before its current popularity. He used that experience and audience to start his own podcast network which he has today. LT 097 | Dan Garbutt - Technique vs. Style in Rowing Subscribe & Review on : Apple Podcasts | Stitcher This week's podcast guest is my friend and Women's Head Rowing Coach of Old Dominion University, Dan Garbutt. Dan and I are both South Jersey natives so it was a ton of fun for me to sit down and reconnect with him. Dan Garbutt is a 2001 graduate of Princeton University. He began his collegiate career in 1998, winning the Freshman Award and being named a member of the United States National Team, while the Tigers captured the Intercollegiate Rowing Association (IRA) Championship. He went on to earn three varsity letters in men's heavyweight crew as Princeton won three Eastern Association of Rowing Colleges (EARC) Championships (1998, 1999, 2001). As a senior in 2001 he received All-Ivy League and All-American honors. Dan has been the Head Coach of Old Dominion Rowing for the past six years and has led the program to new heights and success. Some of his accomplishments include: In the 2015-16 season, his sixth year at the helm, Garbutt guided the Lady Monarchs to a sixth-place finish at the Big 12 Championship in Oak Ridge, Tennessee. The sixth-place finish was a two-spot improvement on the 2015 conference finish. The 2015-16 season also saw the 1V8 earn Big 12 Boat of the Week honors in late March after a dominant performance at the UNC Invite, which marked the first time an ODU boat earned that accolade. In his fifth year as head coach and is in his first season in the Big 12 Conference, the team saw a lot of success, as the Monarchs recorded 19 top-20 finishes, including 13 in the top-5. ODU also started a new tradition by dedicating the Varsity 8 and the Second Varsity 8 boats to President John Broderick and First Lady Kate Broderick. In the 2012-2013 season, the Lady Monarchs received their first ever votes in the CRCA/US Rowing Coaches Top 20 Poll. The seniors from this season, which were part of Garbutt’s first recruiting class, ended their careers at Old Dominion without losing a single home meet. During the fall 2012 season, Old Dominion’s Frosh/Novice Eight boat won the Commodore Cup at the Head of Schuylkill, as well as won gold medals at the Head of the Hooch. The Frosh/Novice Eight boat concluded the fall season with a third place finish at the Rivanna Romp. At the Head of the Schuylkill, ODU’s Open Four boat placed third overall out of 38 total boats. At the Head of the Hooch, the Lady Monarchs Lightweight Four boat placed second. Along with the success on the water, Garbutt also helped open the $2.3 million ODU Rowing Center in the spring of 2011, representing a joint partnership project between the city of Norfolk and the University. A two-story, 13,000 square foot, boathouse facility that houses the Lady Monarchs rowing program just minutes away from ODU on the Lafayette River, is a state-of-the art facility that provides first class accommodations for the program that provides training year round as Garbutt continues to build the highly competitive Lady Monarch program . 3 Key Takeaways you will learn in this interview: The difference between technique and style in rowing. Evaluations and assessments you can do with your athletes The importance of customizing your training program to your athletes needs' Interview Topics: Dan's background and roots as an athlete and coach His thoughts on rowing technique and some key differences of technique vs. style How he evaluates his rowers movement, mobility, strength and physiological capacity Lifeguard rowing and racing Why athletes tend to gravitate towards what they are good at Keys to athletic development and much more. LT 068 | Greg Hughes - Integrating Technology into Collegiate Rowing Subscribe & Review : iTunes | Stitcher Earlier this year I had the pleasure of catching up with Princeton University Men's Heavyweight Rowing Coach Greg Hughes at the 2016 Joy of Sculling Conference. Greg teamed up with rowing biomechanics expert Connie Draper to give a great presentation on the integration of different types of technology into collegiate rowing. This is a fascinating look at how coaches and athletes can use data from the boat such as force curves, individual data such as heart rate variability and heart rate, and GPS data to become better informed about how to execute during training as well as enhance our ability to recover between training sessions. Greg has had tremendous success as an athlete and a coach. Here are just some of the highlights of his career. Greg Hughes begins his eighth season with the Tiger heavyweights in 2017 and has guided Princeton to a 16-2 record over the last two seasons, as well as medals at both Sprints and IRAs both season. Last year, Princeton went 8-1 and won medals in its top four boats at postseason regattas; the varsity boat took silver at Sprints and bronze at IRAs, its best postseason performance in a decade. Since 2013, Princeton has made every grand final at Sprints and IRAs, and it hasn't finished below fourth in either. As the heavyweight coach, Hughes has led Princeton to an 48-14 record, including an 29-13 mark in the Ivy League. He has also helped several of his individual rowers to international success, including 2016 captain Martin Barakso, who was a member of the Canadian Team at the 2015 Senior World Championships. Many of his rowers have competed at the U-23 Worlds annually, including eight current or incoming rowers at the 2016 Championships. Hughes, a former Ivy League and national champion rower with the Princeton men’s lightweights, took over as head coach of the men’s lightweight crew in 2006, following the retirement of his former coach, Joe Murtaugh. In his first year, Hughes turned a team that had gone 2-7 in consecutive seasons into a program that went 5-3 and earned a bronze medal at nationals. In each of the next three seasons, Princeton’s winning percentage would improve, and the Orange and Black would win at least one medal at either the EARC or IRA championships. In 2008, the Tigers rose to No. 1 in the national rankings, won its first Goldthwait Cup over Harvard and Yale since 1999 and placed second at the Eastern championships. In 1999, Hughes co-coached the U.S. lightweight men’s 2- and the heavyweight 2+ at the World Championships, with the latter winning the gold. He co-coached the U.S. men’s eight and the men’s pair at the Under-23 World Championships in 2000, where the eight won a bronze medal. The next year, Hughes assisted Murtaugh in coaching the U.S. lightweight eight that won bronze at the World Championships. In 2002, Hughes coached the Under-23 men’s eight to a gold and the pair to a bronze at the World Championships. He also led the U.S. 4+ to a bronze medal at the 2004 World Championships. In 2005, Hughes coached the US men’s 4- which finished 4th at the Under-23 Worlds, and he coached the U.S. men's 4+ to gold at the 2007 World Championships. Hughes was a four-year lightweight rower under Murtaugh. A 1996 Princeton graduate, Hughes was undefeated in all of his four regular seasons and won two Eastern Sprints titles. He was an All-Ivy League rower on the 1994 and 1996 national championship lightweight crews. He served as team captain in 1996 and won the Gordon G. Sikes Award for the greatest contribution to Princeton lightweight crew. He would go on to be an alternate for both the 1997 and 1998 lightweight U.S. national teams. Steven Yellin is our guest from Fluid Motion Factor. A little bit about Steven Yellin. Steven Yellin began his athletic career playing tennis at the age of 12. He competed locally and nationally and won the Florida state high school singles championship in 1971 and was a member of the winning championship team. Recruited heavily, he chose the University of Pennsylvania where he was the number one player on the team. He was a member of the All-Ivy League tennis team in 1973 and had a win over John McEnroe in a dual match during his college career. As a senior at Penn, Yellin had an extraordinary Zone experience that radically changed his understanding of sports. It was an experience unlike anything he ever experienced on the court before. Though he played on a level never before attained, he realized that the factors that precipitated this experience was something that was not taught in any lesson he had ever taken (and he had taken quite a few!), and for that matter not taught in sports anywhere. For the next 35 years, he worked on developing a systematic program that allow athletes in every sport to set up the very subtle experience in their mind that allows for Zone experiences. Though he teaches something from a mental level, his program is not based on sports psychology, but rather on a crucial neurophysiological experience that has to occur in an athletes mind in order to play on an exceptionally high level. The inner feeling when athletes have this experience is that time slows down, the intellect becomes quiet and the motion becomes effortless. Yellin's program is not based on sports psychology because it does not involve emotions, beliefs, attitudes, self-confidence or any type of visualization. Though all these elements are crucial for the development of an athlete, these attributes develop naturally and holistically when they learn his program. This is one of the reasons why the program is so revolutionary and successful. Its uniqueness lies in although it is a mental program and is based on the mind, it does not fall under the rubric of sports psychology. Essentially, the program teaches a golfer how to systematically access the muscle memory they already have. Yellin's program takes the mystery out of that hit or miss affair and explains what needs to occur in order to play well. He considers himself a 'motion expert', a title that is opening up a new field in sports. A motion expert is someone that understands motion from the most fundamental level and teaches a program that allows someone to consistently repeat where motion originates. The reason for the lengthy time needed to develop Yellin's program is that when an athlete does go into the Zone, it is a very subtle experience. Athletes, for the most part, are not too sure why they slip into the Zone and hence they have a difficult time replicating it. It is a very subtle dance during a Zone experience and Yellin had to examine that experience from every conceivable angle in order to replicate it successfully and ensure it stays for an extended time.

This week on the Heads 'N Tales podcast I traveled down to Princeton University to interview Chuck Dibilio. I asked my friend Cory Weissman (Episode 6) to join me for this interview because, like Chuck, he is also a stroke survivor. Chuck went from breaking Ivy League Rushing Records, to being told he could never play football again when he suffered a life-threatening stroke after his freshman season. Prior to the stroke, Chuck became first Princeton player to earn Ivy League Rookie of the Year honors since 1983 and was named to the first-team All-Ivy League after finishing second in the Ivy League in rushing with 1,068 yards (6th best in Princeton History). It was only a couple of months after this impressive season that Chuck suffered the stoke that changed his life forever. It was interesting to have both Cory and Chuck's perspectives in the interview because they were affected by the strokes oppositely. Cory was effected physically through paralysis and Chuck struggled cognitively, especially with speech and writing. Chuck gave us some great advice on finding an identity after your sport is taken away from you whether it is one game, a season or a career. In this episode Chuck specifically talks about the devastation and anger he felt when the team doctor told him he could never play football again. Chuck doesn't know where he would be today if it weren't for the work he did with Sport Psychologist, Dr. Jarrod Spencer (soon to be on the podcast). You can subscribe to Jarrod's blog through the link in the prior sentence. Specifically, Chuck talks about "Following the energy" in transitioning to a life without football. This means that you should search for things in the world that give you that feeling in your gut that football, or whatever sport, gave you. For Chuck (and myself), CrossFit gave him that feeling back. Below is a documentary on Chuck's transition to life after football: Before Chuck went to Princeton he was a stand-out athlete at Nazareth High School. Chuck earned second-team all-state honors at running back and rushed for more than 2,000 yards as a senior. In that season, he averaged 9.2 yards per carry and scored 32 touchdowns. Chuck's career numbers at Nazareth were 4,902 all-purpose, 4,366 rushing yards and scored 57 career touchdowns. It should come as no surprise that these stats earned Chuck nine school records and nine conference records. As Cory alluded to in the interview, Chuck also lettered in basketball and scored 1,375 career points and earned first-team all-conference and all-area honors. Chuck also put's the "dumb jock" stereotype to rest because he was also a member of the National Honor Society. I'm pretty sure graduating with a degree from Princeton University speaks for itself. We talked about situations like this during the interview, when everyone in the stadium knows you are getting ball and you have to find a way to breakthrough the defense and persevere. You can't choose the obstacles that come into you life, but you have the power to decide if you are going run them over before they do it to you. As one of my high school coaches would always say "Throw the first punch" (meaning, don't wait for a kick in the ass). Download Episode 34 : iTunes | Stitcher Permalink
On this episode we have UNC assistant coach, Dave Metzbower. Coach Metzbower graduated from the University of Delaware in 1986. After graduating from UD, he joined the Blue Hens' coaching staff and spent 1987-1989 on the sidelines in Newark. In 1990, Metzbower joined the Princeton staff as the top assistant to head coach Bill Tierney and helped create dynamic offenses that averaged 181.6 goals per year over a 20-season span. Metzbower helped the Tigers win six NCAA championships, reach the NCAA semifinals 10 times and advance to the NCAA quarterfinals on 16 occasions. During Metzbower's tenure, the Tigers won 14 Ivy League titles while achieving a cumulative 230-65 record. He helped develop the top five goal scorers in Princeton history, the top four in career points, 22 All-Ivy League attackmen, seven Ivy League Players of the Year, 27 first-team All-Americas and 74 All-Ivy League first-team selections. Under Metzbower, Kevin Lowe (1994) and John Hess (1997) won the Lt. Col. J.L. Turnbull Award as the outstanding attackman in Division I, and Josh Sims twice won the Lt. Donald McLaughlin Award as the top midfielder in Division I (1998 and 2000). He's now the assistant coach at the University of North Carolina who just made it back to final four this upcoming weekend for the first time since 1993.
