We're back in the city that's so nice they named it twice, the financial capital of the world – New York City. On this episode we chat with Joyce Leveston, CEO of New York Convention Center Operation Corporation (NYCCOC), which oversees the Javits Center, one of the busiest convention centers in the world. Resting right on the Hudson River, on the west side of Manhattan, Joyce tells us about numerous features that make Javits Center unique. In addition to its expansive convention space, it also has a farm where they grow over 60 crops and a 6.75 acre green roof which serves as a habitat for 72 different bird species and houses nine beehives. We talk about what makes convention centers unique compared to other live event venues, and Joyce's passion for the convention side of the industry. We talk about her career path, from San Diego, Houston, Miami, Washington D.C., Boston, and then Philadelphia, before landing in New York City. Joyce explains what makes good hospitality, and how important it is to treat venues like your home and make them inviting for guests. This may be our first convention center specific guest, and you'll love it as it's packed with great advice, fascinating information, and fun stories.Joyce Leveston: LinkedIn | EmailJavits Center: Facebook | Instagram | X/Twitter ––––––ADVENTURES IN VENUELANDFollow on Instagram, LinkedIn, Facebook, or X/TwitterLearn more about Event & Venue Marketing ConferenceMeet our team:Paul Hooper | Co-host, Booking, Branding & MarketingDave Redelberger | Co-host & Guest ResearchMegan Ebeck | Marketing, Design & Digital AdvertisingSamantha Marker | Marketing, Copywriting & PublicityCamille Faulkner | Audio Editing & MixingHave a suggestion for a guest or bonus episode? If you listened to the previous episode of EarBurner (and you should), you know that Bobby Abtahi was sitting at the table at the Old Monk as Matt and Tim interviewed Mike Rawlings. When they finished the episode with the former mayor, Abtahi, a former president of the Dallas Park Board, having consumed a statistically significant number of beers, started talking about how the city got into the current mess over the management of Fair Park—at which point Tim and Matt plugged the mics back in and recorded this episode. Abtahi was on the Park Board back in 2018, when it was decided that a nonprofit (Fair Park First) would oversee a new for-profit operator of Fair Park (Spectra, which eventually became the Oak View Group), which operator is now nearly $6 million in the red and asking for a handout.  You know what? It's all very byzantine and boring, and we did a poor job of setting up on the podcast what's at stake and what happened. You should probably just skip this episode.  Remember: print makes the podcast possible. Consider subscribing to D Magazine.

Slide on those cowboys boots and “get in the mood” for some Texas glam, as we spin our spurs with Hannah Baker Goodin, Director of Branding for Oak View Group's Moody Center in Austin, Texas. With a reputation of some of the best guest, artist, and tour experiences in the country, Hannah walks us through the unique structure of having a branding department and the emphasis and payoff they have seen from putting so much focus on that side. We get into the [tumble]weeds and walk through their process from when a show is booked to through the show day and how her and her team balance and prioritize events, research extensively, and put a lot of thought into creating memorable moments at each show. Learn about Moody Center's artist experience and gifting letter, which is sent to tours to set expectations and make sure all are aware of the full rollout the venue will be offering. Learn about some of their most memorable guest experience setups – from a shipping container transformed into an album-inspired photo activation for Harry Styles's residency to a custom VW bug for people to pose with at the Jonas Brothers concert. Hannah also tells us about success they've had with crew gifting, and how important it is to show appreciation for them, which sometimes means more to artists than a gift. We also talk about unique artist gifts that blew artists away (like one leading to a handwritten note from The Boss) and others that fell flat but served as great learning experiences. Enjoy this fun, creativity-inspiring episode that's packed full of great tips, career advice, and Tulsa-meets-Texas charm.Hannah Baker Goodin: Facebook | Instagram | LinkedInMoody Center: Facebook | Twitter/X | Instagram

NHL – Blackhawks trade Keith to Oilers for Jones, 3rd-rounder The Chicago Blackhawks have traded two-time Norris Trophy winner Duncan Keith to the Edmonton Oilers for young defenseman Caleb Jones and a third-round draft pick. The Blackhawks also sent forward Tim Soderlund to the Oilers, who were looking for some help on defense after they were swept by Winnipeg in the first round of the playoffs. The 2022 draft pick becomes a second-rounder if Edmonton reaches next year's Stanley Cup Final and Keith is among the top four Oilers defensemen in total ice time through three rounds. Keith has two years left on his contract at a salary-cap hit just over $5.5 million. He turns 38 on Friday. NHL – Former player unlikely to participate in Blackhawks review An attorney who represents a former Chicago Blackhawks player who alleges he was sexually assaulted by a then-assistant coach in 2010 is open to the possibility of her client participating in the team's review of the accusations under certain conditions. Susan Loggans, an attorney who represents the former player and another person suing the team, says her clients were open to participating in the review by Jenner & Block. But she says they want to know more about the parameters of the investigation, and they want the opportunity to conduct their own interviews of key former and current team executives. NHL – Kraken on track for home arena to be ready by mid-October Builders say the home for the newest NHL franchise, the Seattle Kraken, remains on schedule to be finished by the middle of October when the NHL season is expected to begin. Executives with construction firm Oak View Group say by the end of July, they expect 93% of the work to be done on Climate Pledge Arena. It's expected there will be a week of festivities including musical acts surrounding the first Kraken home game. It appears likely that Seattle will begin its first NHL season on the road. NHL – Lightning dent Stanley Cup after another Tampa boat parade The Tampa Bay Lightning celebrated their second consecutive Stanley Cup championship with a boat parade in downtown Tampa on Monday. It ended with the Cup getting dented and being sent to Montreal for repairs. Team captain Steven Stamkos set the tone with a T-shirt that read: “BACK TO BOAT.” Hundreds of boats and other watercraft, along with thousands of fans, lined the waterfront under mostly sunny skies. However, a post-parade rally in a downtown park was delayed because of a thunderstorm. This was the third boat parade in Tampa in 10 months. The Tampa Bay Buccaneers also got one after winning the Super Bowl. NHL – Prosecutor to review goalie Kivlenieks' fireworks death Police in Michigan have turned over their investigation into the fireworks death of Columbus Blue Jackets goaltender Matiss Kivlenieks to a prosecutor for review. Novi police Lt. Jason Meier says his department has not requested charges in Kivlenieks' Fourth of July death. Meier also says Kivlenieks' death still is considered accidental and the police investigation was complete unless otherwise directed by the Oakland County prosecutor's office. The 24-year-old died of chest trauma from an errant fireworks mortar blast. Police have said the firework at a private home northwest of Detroit tilted slightly and started to fire toward people nearby. Kivlenieks was in a hot tub and was trying to move out of the way of the firework when he was struck. MLB – Alonso bests Mancini, Ohtani for 2nd straight HR Derby title Pete Alonso danced to his second straight Home Run Derby title, besting Shohei Ohtani, Trey Mancini and Juan Soto on a night of record long balls in the thin Rocky Mountain air of Coors Field. The New York Mets first baseman hit 74 total home runs and beat Mancini 23-22 in the final round, joining Ken Griffey Jr. (1998-99) and Yoenis Céspedes (2013-14) in winning consecutive titles. What does this mean? The guys tell you in this episode.  Segments this week include Goalie Gear Corner, Weekly One-Timers, and Tweets of the Week. SUBSCRIBE! ENJOY! REVIEW!

The Mariners spent years working with Mike Zunino, but despite all efforts, things never quite worked the way everyone had hoped. Now, the team has decided to go in a different direction, acquiring Omar Narvaez. Corey Brock wrote a piece on Narvaez for The Athletic. He describes the skill set he brings to the team, and where they still want to see him improve. The NBA All Star Game took place yesterday, and there was no defense to be had whatsoever, but that's always been the case. Did people really watch the game in Seattle? It's a little harder to get into it, and the league in general without a team. Luckily Chris Hansen and the Oak View Group both seem to be working toward bringing a team here; OVG with the new hockey arena, and Hansen still pressing forward with the SoDo plans. It'd be a little crazy, after 15 years of fighting for a new arena, if we suddenly had two, but the more the better when it comes to trying to lure a basketball team. M's fans weigh in at 49451; will they still be excited about the "re-imagined" 2019 team?

Tim Leiweke is probably best known as the long-time CEO of AEG, where he spent 18 years and was hailed as a visionary leader, before leaving the sports and entertainment giant suddenly in 2013, pitching up not long afterwards in Toronto as CEO of Maple Leaf Sports & Entertainment. Almost three years later, he was back in his adopted home of LA, this time starting his own venue specialist operation, Oak View Group – or OVG – which he launched alongside his partners music biz legend Irving Azoff and the Madison Square Garden company. James visited Tim in his well-appointed office in Westwood, Los Angeles, on a cloudless February or March day this year. On the conversational agenda: - OVG: What is it? Why did he leave Toronto so quickly to launch it? And is it competing with AEG? - The arena business in general: how to fill them, how to commercialise them, how to programme them, how to secure them, how to service them, and how to pick opportunities in the space; - David Beckham in Miami – and why that Major League Soccer project will happen; - a new Kevin Plank-driven arena project in Baltimore; - why Tim would never have given the go-ahead to AEG’s O2 project in London had he had real skin in the game; - secondary ticketing; and the next frontier for content in major global arenas.
