Sun-Mi Hong, Jen Shyu, Mark Guiliana and William Parker discuss art as an outlet to process grief, and how touring is the best way to meet interesting people. Sun-Mi Hong is a jazz drummer and composer. She was born and raised in Incheon, South Korea, but moved to Amsterdam in 2012 to study music. She's since made her mark on the European jazz scene and in 2017 formed the Sun-Mi Hong Quintet, performing original contemporary compositions as well as improvised jazz music. Her latest album “Third Page: Resonance” was released in November 2022. William Parker is a double bassist who is a giant of the American avant-garde jazz scene. His boundary-pushing antics over the last 40 years have led him to being labelled "the most consistently brilliant free-jazz bassist of all time", as well as playing next to some of the greats, including pianist Cecil Taylor and David S Ware. Mark Guiliana is a drummer and composer known for his technical mastery and genre-shifting abilities. Whether it's acoustic jazz, boundary-stretching electronic music or next-level rock, he's become one of the most influential drummers of his generation. He's worked with David Bowie, and former Music Life guests Meshell Ndegeocello and St Vincent. Singer, composer and multi-instrumentalist Jen Shyu is widely regarded for her virtuosic singing and riveting stage presence. La cantante Jen Shyu presenta "Zero grasses: Ritual for the losses", un trabajo junto a Ambrose Akinmusire (trompeta), Mat Maneri (viola), Thomas Morgan (contrabajo) y Dan Weiss (batería). What are IVF and IUI? Assisted reproductive technology is a common reality for many who are trying to conceive, though it’s rarely talked about in public, or even among one’s closest confidants. In this episode, we talk with Valérie and Jen about each step of their journeys with IUI and IVF, what to expect from the process, and how to keep self-care at the forefront when things get clinical. TAGS: IVF, IUI, Infertility, Reproductive Health, Conception, TTC, Pregnancy, Infertility Awareness, Fertility Treatment *CORRECTION* Valérie was 39 at the time of her egg retrieval, three month shy of turning 40. Jen mentioned "timed pregnancy" but meant "timed intercourse" describing her current method of trying to conceive. We sure hopes it results in pregnancy for her! There’s a video shot in 1991 of a 13-year-old Jen Shyu playing the hell of Tchaikovsky’s Piano Concerto No. 1 on grand piano backdropped by the Peoria Symphony Orchestra. A lifelong musician who studied theater and opera at Stanford and has performed at Carnegie Hall and Lincoln Center, Shyu’s current work veers into the experimental and avant-garde, all while paying homage to a wide range of musical traditions, including Taiwan an East Timor.Often highly theatrical, her work utilizes a wide range of languages (she speaks ten) and instruments, including piano, violin, the two-string Taiwanense moon lute and the Chinese er hu, among others. Shyu closed out last year with the performance of her show “Zero Grasses,” a part of John Zorn's on-going Commissioning series in New York.

This week we focus on the contribution of musicians that approached jazz and improvised music benefiting from the wider perspective afforded to them by the exposure to not only American culture but also the traditions of the places of origin of their families, which hailed from Asian countries like China, India, Iraq, Japan, Korea, Pakistan, the Philippines and Vietnam.
