Scopriamolo insieme.Host: Irene Isopi
The meeting was conducted in a hybrid format: some of the School Committee members, Central Office personnel, and key guests were in the Council Chambers; the remainder, along with the public, were remote via conference bridge, all to adhere to the ‘social distancing' requirements of this pandemic period. I've split the just over two hour and fifty minute meeting into three logical segments: *** First segment *** covers the opening through the JF Kennedy presentation (approx. 1 hour 9 minutes) Second - Presentation - Town Administrator Jamie Hellen, Health Director Cathleen Liberty, Fire Chief Jim McLaughlin covering the COVID-19 vaccine status update (approx. 43 mins) Third - from Town Administrator Jamie Hellen and Facilities Director Mike D'Angelo on the UVGI filters installation update through to the end of the public meeting (approx. 58 minutes) The show notes contain links to the meeting agenda and to my notes. Psalm 8:3 NLT 'When I look at the night sky and see the work of your fingers – the moon and the stars you set in place' I grew up with a great degree of confidence that I could exercise a positive influence in the world. It was the 1960s and in the dying embers of modernity hope was infectious, personified by President JF Kennedy, his brother Robert, and Martin Luther King, Jr. I anticipated in my lifetime justice would indeed flow like a river, and I would have a part to play. While it started well with my work with Oxfam, I grew even more convinced once I became a Christian. Here surely was the manifesto to improve every life, everywhere. Some 50 years later, that confidence hasn’t exactly faded away, but more given way to a fresh recognition of God’s grace and my place in God’s world. Rather than pour over newspapers, read journals, watch endless news channels, I prefer to stand in the garden at night and gaze up into the starlit sky. To reflect upon how infinitesimally small I am standing in one miniscule corner of the vast galaxy I am in awe of the magnitude of God, while intrigued with God’s magnificence. Once I was full of ideas for change, a vocal campaigner for justice; today I stand in quiet awe of God. I’ve not lost my appetite for social justice, yet have despaired of humanity’s capacity to realise this through either altruism or liberal democracy. At heart I am selfish and so even with all my internal commitment to justice, I still exercise due care for my own welfare ahead of those whose plight I promote and campaign for. I feel like two people in one body constantly at war with each other. So it is essential I stand and gaze and grow in awe of my God. It is, after all, God alone who reveals what righteousness is. It is God alone who creates within me the capacity to put others’ interests ahead of my own. My skyward gaze is in fact a highly articulate prayer. QUESTION: When was the last time you stopped to look at the stars and consider the greatness of God? PRAYER: Lord, may my hope be only in you because only you have the power to bring real change.
Psalm 90:2 NLT 'Before the mountains were born, before you gave birth to the earth and the world, from beginning to end, you are God.' I grew up in what was the flowering and then the dissolution of modernity. I remember how the world was alive with hope listening to the rhetoric of President JF Kennedy, “ask not what your country can do for you, but what you can do for your country”. The sky was the limit, quite literally, as Kennedy set in motion a ten-year strategy to successfully land a man on the moon. Youth culture broke free of the shackles of inherited custom, and as a young person, idealism flowed through my veins with a commitment to end all injustice. Sadly, the whole project stood and then fell upon the capacity of fractured humanity to take the lessons of history, lay a foundation of opportunity for all, no matter their ethnicity, gender, wealth or nationhood, and build the impossible dream. The disillusion that followed those heady days was palpable, socially and personally. I was as subject to corruption as the generations that preceded me, perhaps more so because of the opportunity that deconstructing an older order offered. The problem was, I only had the material that already existed to work with, material that was already corrupted. Only God alone knew a condition of innocence uncorrupted by any faulty material. For God created out of nothingness and impregnated that creation with the capacity for life and hope. Despite corruption introduced at an early stage, nevertheless there remained the opportunity for redemption and its fruit, righteous living. Such living demanded choices, the first of which was to acknowledge the reality of God, whose will and word alone had crafted everything tangible. Such a God relies not one jot upon idealism or cynicism. Neither positive thinking nor perennial despair in any way removes the substantive reality of a supernatural God who alone sustains all that there is throughout creation, despite our inability to confirm or deny his presence. QUESTION: Take a moment to look around at all the wonders and scale of the created world. PRAYER: Lord, how marvellous are the works of your hands.

How Mozart's Requiem, written when he was dying, has touched and changed people's lives. Crime writer Val McDermid recalls how this music helped her after the loss of her father. Hypnotist Athanasios Komianos recounts how the piece took him to the darker side of the spirit world. And a friend of ballet dancer Edward Stierle, Lissette Salgado-Lucas, explains how Eddie turned his struggle with HIV into a ballet inspired by Mozart's music. Basement Jaxx used the Requiem in their live shows and on their album Scars - Felix Buxton reveals his love for Mozart and the divine nature of the Requiem. And Mozart expert Cliff Eisen takes us inside the composer's world: how the orchestra and choir conjure visions of funerals, beauty, hellfire and the confusion of death. He recounts how Mozart was commissioned to write the piece by a nobleman who may have intended to pass off the work as his own. The stern challenge faced by people trying to complete the piece are described by composer Michael Finnissy, who himself wrote a completion of the work. The Requiem was performed at the funerals of many heroic figures - Beethoven, Napoleon and J F Kennedy, among others. Gordana Blazinovic remembers one extraordinary performance during the horrors of the Bosnian war - a show of defiance and grief from the ruins of Sarajevo City Hall. Producer: Melvin Rickarby.

Will Self reflects on America's view of the assassination of JF Kennedy, fifty years on. After years of talk of conspiracy, cover-up and doctored film footage, he concludes, "It isn't so much that the Kennedy assassination has transitioned smoothly into a commonsensical past; it's rather that it was the first instance of a peculiarly modern variant of the historic event: its media simulation". Producer: Sheila Cook.
