One of the unexpected success stories from the 2018 Winter Olympics in Korea was the gold medal triumph of the United States men's curling team, featuring Chisholm native John Shuster, McFarland, Wisconsin native Matt Hamilton, Duluth natives John Landsteiner and Tyler George as well as Duluth native and alternate Joe Polo. They were the first American team to ever win gold in curling. Four years later, as the defending champs, the Shuster Rink won't be flying under the radar at the 2022 Winter Olympics in Beijing, China. They are mostly the same, but something is different this time around. George has stepped away from elite curling and now, Duluth native Chris Plys is part of Team USA. Plys will be busy in Beijing as he will also compete on the U.S. mixed-doubles team. On December 15, 2021, the U.S. men's curling team took part in Media Day at Curl Mesabi in Eveleth. This weekend marks the 40th anniversary of the Moscow 1980 Olympics, which may be better known for the 66-country boycott of them. Our TKFLASTANI archivist Teri Hedgpeth joins us to talk about the boycott and a new exhibit she put together for the US Olympic and Paralympic Committee that honors the US athletes who were affected by it. Follow Teri on LinkedIn! We are working on a side project about the 1980 boycott from a global aspect, so if you were involved or have historical context to present, we would be interested in talking with you. Please email us at flamealivepod@gmail.com and put “boycott” in the subject line, and we’ll get back to you to talk further. In our visit to TKFLASTAN, we learn that Clare Egan and the US women's biathlon team are having a Bonfire fundraiser to support the ladies' travel fund. New t-shirt designs go up every two weeks, so be sure to check it out (and don't blame us if you end up with a t-shirt drawer that's nothing but biathlon-themed shirts. Nothing wrong with that)! John Shuster and his curling team have been nominated for Team USA's Team of the Year. Fan voting is on through July 20. Professional athletes make a boatload of money, right? Well, not most American Olympians. They rely on agents like this week's guest Jesse Lichtenberg, founder of JL Management, to help them get exposure to their sport and their endeavors -- and hopefully land some deals that will lift them above the poverty line. Jesse talks with us about being an agent to sliders--luge, bobsled and skeleton--and what you need to be a successful agent (hint: killer negotiating skills are just part of the puzzle. Sharpies and peanut M&Ms are also key). You can find more information about Jesse's company, at JL Management, and follow her on Twitter. Also in this week's news, the event session schedule for Tokyo 2020 has been released -- and some events really benefit the US prime time TV viewers. The story of people written off as having no chance in the Olympics nonetheless winning reminds us of Jesus's choice to be a servant to his disciples. None of us is better than those we serve, and when we choose to serve another, it is a reminder that they are equal in God's eyes, people with stories to share.
