Our latest episode in our classic Olympic Opening Ceremony series is here as we once again go over an Opening Ceremony we have already covered in looking at the 2018 Winter Olympic Opening Ceremony from PyeongChang in South Korea! Has this Opening Ceremony actually improved since we watched it six years ago? How excited are we to have so much mascot interaction in this ceremony? Why are we still disappointed by the lack of Psy, even though there is technically Psy in it? Are we in awe of the soprano singer still? Are we slowly becoming nostalgic for Thomas Bach (Olympic Champion Fencing) and his very long speeches? And does this episode make us want to re-visit some other recent Opening Ceremonies for another look? It's all here in another epic episode that you won't want to miss!

Episode 41 and Wendi and Dfernando's guest interview is Canadian multi-medalist Olympic ice dancer and linquist Paul Poirier. Paul Poirier started skating at age five. In standard Canadian tradition, he was put into ice hockey along with his brothers but instead of chasing the puck, he would spin on the face-off dots. Once he was officially enrolled in figure skating, he loved being able to do what he wanted. From ages 9 to 18 he split his time between ice dance and men’s singles; focusing more on ice dance because his career was more established in this form and he liked the artistic freedom it provided. In July 2011, Poirier teamed up with Piper Gilles. At their first national championships together in January 2012, they won the bronze medal in ice dance but were ineligible to compete internationally that season because Gilles had competed for the United States the year prior. They debuted as a couple on the ISU Grand Prix in the Fall of 2012 and competed at their first World Championships together in 2013.In May 2013, Poirier suffered a right ankle fracture dislocation and underwent surgery to insert plates and screws. They were able to compete at the 2014 Canadian Championships, but weren’t quite physically or technically ready to take their best shot at qualifying for Sochi 2014 Winter Olympic Games and missed the Olympic team by one spot. That fueled their fire for the next quadrennial. After winning silver at the 2014 Four Continents Championships, they had one of their strongest seasons in 2014-15, winning a pair of silver medals on the Grand Prix series and qualifying for the Grand Prix Final. They went on to post a career-best finish at the World Championships, placing sixth.Gaining a reputation as innovative skaters who try to do the opposite of what people expect, Gilles and Poirier had their partial step sequence from the 2015-16 short dance adopted as a new pattern dance by the ISU and dubbed the "Maple Leaf March". They had been struggling with that program all season, tweaking it constantly and changing the music entirely three weeks before the Worlds, where they ended up placing fifth in the short dance to put them into the final flight for the free dance. At the 2017 World Championships they recorded their second straight eighth-place finish. After winning silver at the 2018 Canadian Championships, Gilles and Poirier competed at PyeongChang 2018 Olympic Winter Games where they had yet another eighth-place finish. They followed up by matching their career-best World Championship result a month later.Poirier had a prior successful partnership with Vanessa Crone that included a World Junior silver medal in 2008, a Canadian title in 2011, and competing at the Vancouver 2010 Olympic Winter Games.Poirier completed his Bachelor of Arts in Linguistics at the University of Toronto. Passionate about language, he continues to spend time reading and doing linguistics research. He is currently training with Piper Gilles for the 2022 Beijing Olympic Winter Games. Also on Episode 41, Wendi and Dfernando talk about non-celebratory Valentine's Day, the release of BARB & STAR GO TO VISTA DEL MAR and those 1970s TV commercials featuring creepy stop-motion dolls. And on the RIPE & ROTTEN REPORT there's the 2012 fashion documentary VERSAILLES '73: American Runway Revolution, Gen Z vs. Gen X, the hilarious Cheri Oteri and slow texters. Today's theme: PyeongChang 2018 Paralympics The Paralympic Games is a major international multi-sport event involving athletes with a range of disabilities. The PyeongChang 2018 Paralympic Winter Games takes place from March 9th to March 18th, featuring athletes from competing in six sports for 80 Gold medals. What is the origin of the word “Paralympic”? When did it all begin? We look at the history, as well as the present competition, speaking to athletes and coaches from the scene. The Conversationalist with Jon Kreamelmeyer - Former American cross-country skiing coach who was the head coach of United States from 1998 until 2006, during which time the United States won 11 Paralympics medal in cross-country skiing. - During the Winter Paralympics in Sochi, he was inducted into the Paralympic Hall of Fame. “Should we, in your experience, be treating the Paralympics as its own special and unique event with noticeable differences from the Olympics, or is it more important that we pay less attention to the unique nature of it and try, instead, to blur the lines between them? There have been some reports that in some countries, it has been rather tricky to attract attention and interest in the Paralympics, with reasons ranging from the commercialization of the healthy body image to a lack of expansive tv coverage. Is this the case for the US or any other countries you've been associated with? What do you think can be done, if anything, to raise interest in these games?” & Joany Badenhorst - para snowboarder and co-captain of Australian Paralympic Winter team for PyeongChang 2018 “From an early age you took part in various youth paralympics and sport events. But the story of how you got into snowboarding is intriguing. You were trying on a high heeled prosthetic leg to wear on your graduating formal, jumping and running, and head coach of the Australian para snowboard team Pete Higgins was watching you on the other room? Children with disability don't see as much representation of them on media or it might be hard for them to find a role model. Do you hope that they might learn something from watching the Paralympics games? Or do you have any message for them?” Media Monster Derren Brown: The Push Next week: Yoga
The Winter Olympics are done and it is time to hash it all out and see if they have inspired us to get on that treadmill gathering dust in the corner (yeah, no). The highs, the lows, the thrill of victory and the agony of defeat, it was all there in South Korea for us to behold. Also, a discussion on school shootings in America.#bigmoney #pyeongchang2018 #USOC #USCurling #leanin

Well all good things must come to an end and sadly PyeongChang 2018 is over. But does that mean we're going to stop and not bring you our review and recap of the final day and closing ceremony? Of course now! How crap was the closing ceremony? What is the deal with kids? What is the deal with kids who can project their voice so far? Where the hell was Psy? Are we looking forward to Beijing? Is Thomas Bach still speaking? Why is Ben now besties with Edwina Bartholomew? And where do these games rank in the minds of your beloved trio of hosts? It's time to listen, extinguish the flame and get the tissues out as we close out the games of the 23rd winter Olympiad in style!

The penultimate day is here and it's time to make sure you're updated and fulfilled as we declare it the games of Ester Ledecka and Canadian bronze with day 15 of PyeongChang 2018. Why is it such a big deal for Canada to break the bronze drought in Men's Ice Hockey and eclipse the fortune of the great Grenoble 68 side? Why is it such a big deal for Canadian's to break the car robbery drought and create a new Ryan Lochte? Are squirrels that scary that snowboarders should run them over? Can Jarrod try and explain to us the rules of mass start speed skating? And why has Australia just packed up and gone home? Listen in, get educated and excited as another episode comes through your ears!

We're so close to the end that we're nearly going to cry and there is a lot of crying today especially if you're Canadian so we try to make sure your tears are wiped away in the best possible way. Just how on earth did Canada lose to Germany in ice hockey? Just how on earth did Canada lose to Switzerland in curling? Just how on earth is it deemed a failure for Canada despite the fact they won a medal of every colour on day 14? How on earth is channel 7 even in Korea still when they are so focused on the Commonwealth Games already? And do you think Roger Federer would be a fan of our show if we were Swiss? So much to answer, so little time for you to click download!

As we get closer to the end of another Olympics it's time to recap on a day that New Zealand will remember forever and Canada will want to forget as Ben, Colin & Jarrod reflect on the 13th day of PyeongChang 2018. Just how is Canada coping with the loss of both the ice hockey and the curling? How is New Zealand still celebrating winning two bronze medals? How is Hungary celebrating by finally winning a gold? How is Australia celebrating in really not achieving anything? It's all there and more in another action packed day that we know you'll want to listen to immediately!
It was a big day for Team Olympic Fever in Women's Bobsled and Men's Curling, as we celebrate Lauren Gibbs' silver medal and Team Shuster's advancement to the medal round. It was also an amazing day for women at the Cross-Country Skiing venue, as the U.S. sprint relay team of Kikkan Randall and Jessie won the country's first gold medal ever in the sport. And it wasn't just the U.S. who had a great day; the Winter Olympics has a new all-time leading medalist too. We talk about the U.S. medal in Speedskating and wrap up the Figure Skating competition. Then move into the Games' new event, Big Air. Plus, Alpine Skiing and what's up with our Team Olympic Fever ice hockey official Jess Leclerc. It's a momentous day in the history of the Winter Olympics as we come to you for day 12 of PyeongChang 2018 and celebrate some moments from day 13 which involve NEW ZEALAND GETTING ON THE PODIUM....TWICE!!!! As we hide our shock factor at this amazing feat, Ben, Jarrod & Colin go over all the other stuff that needs to be talked about so that we don't get too kiwi at this point of the games. Why is American Cross-Country skiing the next big thing for our American friends? Why is Canada disappointed they won a bronze? Why is Australia disappointed in the entire team? And how hard is it for a slalom racer to actually go around the first gate? All of those and more to be discussed as we still try and work out how New Zealand did what they did...or dud what they dud...
