Justin is the Bronze Medalist at the 2024 United States Olympic Trials, throwing 3 PRs combined in prelims and finals. I have watched him rise in the NPC Utah bodybuilding community winning the Salt City Showdown, Jay Cutler Classic and recently finishing in the Top 3 at the USA Nationals. Zack shares a lot of Marcus Aurelius quotes which I appreciate. Marcus Aurelius was a Roman Empeorar and Stoic Philosopher. He said “What we resist, persists. Very little is needed to make a happy life; it is all within yourself, in your way of thinking. Live a virtuous life and eliminate vices.” I have a lot of respect for Zack as a bodybuilder, hard working blue collar man and keeping it real. I have been lifting weights and following bodybuilding for much of my adult life. It’s been a hobby that has taught me many life lessons. This was a really fun conversation reminiscing my early meat head days. It was cool hearing Zack’s story from the first time going to the gym 6 years ago and how bodybuilding is opening the door of opportunity through hard work and discipline. We also get into philosophy, stoicism, laws of the universe etc. Grab a beverage of your choice and enjoy the show. Wow. Drea's impressive athletic background also lends her to be a role model and leader on the off the field for women’s footy. Go to our Legacy Sports Calendar at www.bit.ly/legacysportscal and the Legacy Sports website at www.legacytigers.com for more information.    Information regarding our Senior Recitals has been distributed to VAPA arts teachers and is available for seniors in the office. All students who perform in the Senior Recital or present a portfolio earn an arts honors cord to wear at graduation. For the Class of 2021, the recital is a graduation requirement. Please note that at VAPA we have a new tardy system that is helping us monitor tardies and assign students with multiple tardies to detention. All students must be in their first class of the day by 8:30 am or 9:30 am on Late-Start days. Lastly, a reminder that the progress reports for the first grading period have been sent out. I encourage all of our students to stay on top of assignments and in contact with teachers regarding course expectations. Opportunities for making up courses are limited and it is always better to earn a C or better in every class the first time around.  A reminder to check our calendars at www.vapalegacy.com along with our linked social media sites for upcoming activities and events. Have a great week and I'll see you at school!   Take Care, Dr. Edward Trimis, Principal

We’ve all seen the picture of an iceberg that shows what we see above water is only a fraction of what is happening underneath. This depiction is the reality for many people or situations that we encounter every day. The story always has more to it than first meets the eye. This is no different for Alysia Montaño. Many know her as “the runner with a flower in her hair,” or “the pregnant runner.” But like all elite athletes, Alysia is more than a runner, with a lifetime of stories that make her who she is. Today Alysia not only helped us understood who she is, but how we can look beneath the surface to understand others and even ourselves in a new light. The Pregnant Runner Although Alysia has won seven national championships and two world championships, some of her biggest recognition came when she decided to run at the 2014 USA Nationals while she was 8 months pregnant. Like you would guess, many people (who were not her coach, midwife, or doctor) began questioning what she was doing. “Is that healthy for you or the baby?” they would ask.  Alysia was being healthy, and her first daughter Linnéa was carried to full-term, strong and healthy. While Alysia didn’t PR during that race, she finished strong and proved her point. It is okay to be a mother and a runner, and it’s okay to do them simultaneously. This was just the beginning for Alysia and boldly living her beliefs. She continues to speak out today for women and underprivileged groups, working with brands that support women in their careers and their motherhood and calling out those brands that don’t What Privileges Do You Have? With all the talk of equal rights, planet conservation, and other issues, life can get overwhelming quickly. Sometimes you might just want to curl up into a cozy ball under a blanket and shut out the world. It’s easy to want to just put your head down, live your own life, and not try to change a world that can seem unchangeable at times. Alysia recommends to simply take a moment and recognize all the privileges you have when you feel this way. For those that don’t have the same privileges, they don’t have the option to hide from their challenges. They must fight every day.  All of us have both more and less privileges than other groups of people. Hopefully this gives you motivation to keep working toward a better life while being grateful for what you already have. Work hard to gain those privileges you don’t yet have, and look out for those that have even less. Put yourself in the shoes of others and you will find energy to fight for them. What It’s Like to Be a Russian Athlete Every person has a different story. When Alysia found out that she would be upgraded to the Bronze Medal from her initial fourth place finishes, it was difficult for her to describe her feelings. Of course, she was happy to find out she would receive her medal, but also upset about the entire process. It will be impossible to truly give Alysia what she deserved. A moment with her country’s flag, standing on the podium amidst other athletes, lost pay and potential contracts, and having her departed grandmother never know of her accomplishments are all part of what she will never get back. Her story was changed forever. Yulia Stepanova, the Russian athlete who was the whistleblower to set off the doping allegations was able to talk with Alysia about her experiences training as a potential Olympic athlete in Russia. Her story is very different than those runners in the U.S. While most athletes in the U.S. need to go searching for illegal performance-enhancing drugs, these Russian athletes were given pills at a young age, expected to take them, and rarely told what they were.  To perform clean, they had to overcome more hurdles than should be expected of them. Alysia recognized that Yulia not only had a much different experience than her as an elite athlete, but also risked her life in being a whistleblower. Run in Their Shoes The takeaway is straightforward, though not easy. Try to consider other people’s lives and experiences. No one has the same story as you, whether that is an underprivileged member of society or a foreign athlete. We can continue to work toward something greater by doing our best to understand the people around us.   Resources: Alysia on Twitter Alysia on Instagram Alysia’s Website Keeping-Track Podcast   Thank you to my wonderful sponsors Generation UCAN and Altra for sponsoring this episode of the Running for Real Podcast. Weekly Updates March 3, 2019 Hello VAPA Community! This is Dr. Trimis with a few announcements! Monday is a late-start day. Hola Comunidad VAPA! ¡Este es el Dr. Trimis con algunos anuncios! El lunes es un día de inicio tardío.  Today we welcomed the Visiting Team from the Western Association of Schools and College to Legacy VAPA. We wish them all the best in their short time with us as they review the tremendous progress we have made since the last visit in 2016 and learn about our plans forward to 2020 and our 10 Year Anniversary!  A huge thank you to our awesome Math Educators who started their college prep math sessions with our juniors yesterday. There will be 4 sessions in total with the main goal of helping our 11th graders be successful in math and prepared for the many exams coming in the Spring including SAT, AP, SBAC, and more. VAPA's expectation is all 11th graders participate. If you missed yesterday, you have three more Saturdays to take advantage of this opportunity, March 9, 16, and 23. #vapasmart  Congratulations to the newest members of VAPA's chapter of the National Honor Society, or NHS, inducted on Friday. Thank you to the teachers who nominated them and their families and friends who supported them. And thank you to the NHS sponsors, Ms. Dadrass and Ms. Solis. NHS is another example of programs that exemplify the high academic standards we have at Legacy VAPA. NHS is a competitive, internationally recognized organization that has thousands of members across the nation. Other such organizations at VAPA include the International Thespian Society and the Tri-M Music Honor Society.  Congratulations to Girls Basketball Team who ended their season in their quarter-final game in the CIF State Championships this week. We are super proud of our team and all they have accomplished this year and over the last several years. A huge thank you to Coach Estrada, his staff, families, and supporters.  Congratulations to our Cheer Team who placed 14th out of several teams at USA Nationals and will compete this Friday in the CIF City-Section Eastern Regionals. Congratulations to our Color Guard with an awesome performance at the WGASC Winter Guard competition on Saturday in Temecula. I encourage our Tiger community to come out and support them at their next competition at Warren High School in Downey on March 17.  We have several activities and events coming up as we focus on classroom instruction, our current accreditation visit by the Western Association of Schools and Colleges, state assessments, and our school-based SAT. It is critical that our entire school community stay focused, students, families, teachers, and staff, so we meet or exceed our goals including our A-G pass rate and 100% graduation and attendance. Please go to our website for more information at www.vapalegacy.com. Social media links are also found on our website. That's it for now, have a great week and I'll see you at school!   Take Care,  Dr. Edward Trimis, Principal

Whitney Pesek was 13 years old when she noticed her vision mysteriously turning blurry, sharp edges becoming soft. After a battery of tests she was diagnosed with macular degeneration, a condition that causes loss in the center of the field of vision. Despite her accelerating condition, a malady which she rarely discussed with others, Whitney discovered climbing and fell down the rabbit hole of obsession. After years of roping up and cruising boulderfields, she discovered a community of adaptive climbers she had been entirely oblivious to. A couple months later she stood atop the podium at USA Nationals. Shortly thereafter she and her caller, fiance Sean Spring, were walking the streets of the legendary Innsbruck, Austria for the 2018 World Championships. By the time they boarded the plane for home, Whitney had both a silver medal draped around her neck and a new community of support, psyche, and passion. Buckle up for this one. Whitney's is a story of humble perseverance, discovery, and a testament to how climbing can augment a stubborn drive to continue doing what you love against all odds. Thanks again to Ryne Doughty for the lovely tunes.

The Journey to a USA National Working Equitation Championship Nothing like a little adversity to build character I always say. "We all know the toughest journeys have the sweetest rewards."~Patty Carlson. Well said Patty because the journey was a tuff one, let me explain: As I rode Carbon into Watt arena in Fort Worth Texas for the EOH phase, the gate keeper kindly said, "Good luck Randy." I turned to look at her with a crooked smile and replied, "It was not luck that got me here." To play at this level it takes: planning, preparation, talent, tenacity, heart, try, desire, a support team, money, time, blood, sweat, tears, drive, patience, etc, etc… It would cheapen the win if it was all due to chance. Little did she know that I have been training Carbon for the last five years and worked the last six months practicing specifically to win this championship, but that is just part of the journey. Three days earlier, I was stuck in a little town in South Carolina looking for a mechanic to repair my truck. The short story is that it took $1,000 and 48 hours to figure out that the catalytic converter was clogged and the water pump needed to be replaced. As you can see by the picture, Carbon supervised the mechanic to make sure the truck met all safety requirements. Now that I spent my mad money, the question was, do I have enough money to make the 3,000 mile and 10 day journey to get to TX and back home? Well we said our good byes to the mechanic and drove straight through to Forth Worth. With eight exhibitors in level 4, we had our work cut out for us. All the exhibitors were excellent riders and had great horses. We were pretty much on pins and needles the whole time. At this point I trusted in Carbon's training and rode what I brought to the show. I knew he was better than he was a few months ago, but I was not sure if the other fancy horses would kick our butts. We placed 2nd in the dressage phase and I thought we received a 3rd place in speed. After knocking down two polls in the EOH phase, I thought for sure the best we could do is reserve or 3rd place. Carbon and I had no idea we had won until they announced it at the awards. Well the rest is history and if it was not for Sierra Nevada Lusitanos prize money, we would not have made it home. So you could say that Carbon earned his ticket home. I want to give a special thanks to all of Carbon's fans that watched us on live streaming provided by AndalusianWorld.com. Don't miss the video of our EOH below. We made some mistakes, but Carbon was in good form.. Special Thanks to: Sierra Nevada Lusitanos... Sponsorship Andalusianworld.com... Videographer Moonfyre... The Need for "Speed" The Journey to a USA National Working Equitation Championship. Nothing like a little adversity to build character I always say. "We all know the toughest journeys have the sweetest rewards."~Patty Carlson. The need for "SPEED"! I have to admit that when I first learned about Working Equitation, I was not crazy about the speed phase. When I look at all the YouTube videos of WE, I see a lot of horses that appear that they are on the muscle. Don't misquote me; those horses are very talented and great athletes, but I think some of them can use some suppling. Up to this point of Carbon's training, it has been all about going slow and correct with our own style. Now, I am asking him to go fast, but trying not to lose that softness and style I have worked so hard to maintain. I have a few a personal goals. I said to Carbon: "If we ever do this WE thing, I want you to be noticeably soft and supple." I don't want us to look like a European doing WE. I want to bring to the table the American working cowhorse style. Well after two regional shows on the East Coast and 6 months of hard work, we have made lots of improvements. If you look at Carbon's progress, I think you will agree that he is getting better with time, but we still have a ways to go. Our next goal is to go overseas and compete internationally. It would be nice to be the first American to compete overseas. I expect that a trip to Europe will be a big learning opportunity. We went into this phase not really knowing how we stood in the standings. After placing 2nd in the dressage phase and stumbling over two obstacles in the EOH phase, I thought our chances were very slim of pulling off a championship. Carbon's best phase is the dressage and his weakness is the speed, but he gave me his best and that is all I could ask for. This little adopted Canadian PMU horse, has lots of try and heart, what a rockstar he is. Enjoy the video. I think this is one of his best runs to date. On a side note, pay attention to the gate obstacle. Boy! Carbon has struggled with this obstacle all year. He has made big improvements on this obstacle, he rocked it this time. I personally need to work on the lance more. I have yet to get the ring in competition, luckily you do not lose points for not getting the ring. Special Thanks to: Sierra Nevada Lusitanos...
