Earlier this week, Fox News' retired Staff Sgt. Johnny Joey Jones had the opportunity to interview one of the first responders he featured in his book, "Behind the Badge." In the interview, Steve Hennigan recounts what first drove him to join the Marines—the tragic Beirut Bombings of 1983. From the moment of his enlistment, he launched a long career of service that would lead to diffusing bombs and protecting the streets of Los Angeles. Today on Fox News Rundown Extra, we will share that entire conversation between retired Staff Sgt. Johnny Joey Jones and retired Marine, bomb technician, and former LAPD officer Steve Hennigan. On Thursday's Mark Levin Show, the Senate parliamentarian is blocking Medicaid changes to waste, fraud, and abuse in the big, beautiful bill. House Republicans proposed tightening Medicaid eligibility with work requirements and restrictions on illegal aliens, but the Senate parliamentarian deemed these changes outside budget reconciliation, exposing the bill to a filibuster. The Senate's decision not to challenge this ruling perpetuates Medicaid misuse. Additionally, the Senate opposes raising the $10,000 cap on home mortgage interest and property tax deductions, disproportionately affecting taxpayers in high-tax blue states. We need to maximize tax deductions for individuals no matter if they live in a blue or a red state. Presidents Reagan and Trump's tax policies fueled economic growth. Also, Zohran Mamdani, a New York City mayoral candidate, is a dangerous Marxist Islamist with ties to anti-Semitic and anti-Israel activities. Mamdani's proposals, including city-owned grocery stores, massive tax increases, and refusing to cooperate with ICE, are policies that could drive out productive residents, attract welfare-seekers, Islamists, and Marxists, and lead to economic disaster for New York City. If Mamdani gets elected you will see authoritarian democracy in NYC. Authoritarian democracies mimic authoritarian regimes, using seemingly legitimate legal processes—such as passing tyrannical laws or disregarding due process—to justify power, prioritizing legality over justice or morality. Later, John Catsimatidis, owner of Red Apple Media and grocery chains Gristedes and D'Agostino Supermarkets, calls in to warn that he'll close his grocery stores if Mamdani wins the NYC mayor race. Catsimatidis explains that Mamdani's policies, including massive tax increases and defunding the police, would drive businesses out and harm the city's economy. In addition, capitalism drives innovation and improves quality of life by creating wealth through valuable goods and services, such as grocery store chains offering affordable, diverse food options. In contrast, Marxism destroys societies without producing tangible benefits. Capitalism underpins everyday conveniences—clean water, electricity, advanced healthcare, and mobility—unmatched globally. Marxist and socialist ideologies promise unattainable utopias while overlooking capitalism's capacity to foster equality through social mobility, enabling anyone to rise from poverty to wealth. Finally, Johnny Joey Jones calls in to discuss his new book, Behind the Badge – Answering The Call To Serve on America's Homefront. Learn more about your ad choices. Democratic socialist Zohran Mamdani has declared victory in New York City's Democratic mayoral primary, beating out moderate candidate and former New York Governor Andrew Cuomo. The primary results sent waves through the Democratic Party, as voters seemed energized by this candidate's radical agenda that includes free public transit fares, free childcare, and promises to oppose ICE operations in the city. Democratic consultant and former advisor to President Clinton, Doug Shoen, joins the Rundown to discuss whether Blue State voters are jumping even further left. The call to enlist may look different to each American. Retired Staff Sgt. Johnny Joey Jones remembers he and many from his generation enlisted right after the September 11th terror attacks. In Jones' new book, “Behind the Badge,” he spoke to retired Marine, bomb tech, and former LAPD officer Steve Hennigan about the catalyst for his becoming a Marine: the 1983 Beirut Bombings. Later, Hennigan tells Jones about his relentless pursuit to protect and serve with the Los Angeles Police Department. Military recruitment numbers are at the lowest recorded levels in several years, with only 9 percent of young people in the United States saying they would consider joining the armed forces. Some are turning their attention to various requirements that make many Americans ineligible for service. As recruitment goals lag, military leaders are now seriously considering easing their enlistment requirements. Lawmakers too are seeking to relax guidelines, more recently targeting policies surrounding marijuana use and height and weight requirements for certain branches. Marine veteran and FOX News contributor Johnny Joey Jones joins the Rundown to discuss why the military needs to change the way it presents itself to bolster recruitment and shares a few stories from his new book, 'Unbroken Bonds of Battle.' It appears to be a matter of time before the U.S. energy sector becomes more reliant on a growing nuclear industry. This was a main focus of last week's Energy and Commerce Subcommittee hearing, where representatives discussed the merits of addressing the obstacles in the way of building more nuclear reactors in our country. Chairman of that subcommittee, Congressman Jeff Duncan, says unlike many issues in Congress, lawmakers on both sides of the aisle are committed to supporting America's future with nuclear energy. Rep. Duncan joins the Rundown to explain what Congress is doing to bring Americans nuclear power as soon as possible, why this specific issue has earned bipartisan support on the Hill, and what steps are being taken to ensure this technology will be implemented safely. Plus, commentary by a former investment banker and author of 'You Will Own Nothing,' Carol Roth. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

* Available July 12, 2021 on Fox News Podcasts+ via Apple Podcasts Subscriptions. In this multi-part podcast, “Alchemy of Violence: Narcos, Reapers and Survival,” host and Marine Staff Sgt. Johnny Joey Jones will guide you through a series of wide-ranging interviews with Ed Calderon, a former paramilitary law enforcement officer from Mexico who took on the country's ruthless drug cartels face-to-face at a time when their gruesome violence was reaching a fever pitch in 2006 and beyond. Calderon's dangerous career south of the border, and the rampant corruption he says came with it, ultimately forced him to run for his life. It also left him with a lifetime's worth of on-the-ground experience, and a set of unique survival skills akin to a real-life McGuyver, just a few years shy of his 40th birthday. In his own words, Calderon shares intimate details on everything from his childhood and family inspiration, to the horrors he witnessed firsthand in his career, and how he's using those experiences now to help others who might be recovering from similar traumas –a new career in what he calls his “after-life.” Learn more about your ad choices. As a bomb technician in Afghanistan, Johnny “Joey” Jones experienced the worst possible scenario in an IED-related incident. It resulted in the loss of both of his legs above the knee and severe damage to his right forearm. In this week's Team Never Quit episode, he describes in detail the sequence of events that led to that horrific event. But that event didn't stop him from dedicating his life to the service of other veterans and their families as well as serving as a Fox News contributor. After two combat deployments and eight years of active service in the Marine Corps, Johnny “Joey” Jones live his life to the fullest. In this episode you will hear: “Get it right, or people die” – that's a good way to train. When I leaned back [from the wall] I stepped on an IED that was there; it threw me through the air. It was truly an amazing experience. There was no noise. Everything just turned into a giant cloud. My right arm was fileted open and the bones were broken, so when I reached up, my hand stayed in my lap. I remember looking at it. It didn't hurt for like an hour. My legs were completely gone, from the knee down. You gotta stop the bleeding if you want to live. I learned at that moment, I didn't know the Lord's Prayer. I lose my legs; other guys lose their life. TNT won't cut you open; it's gonna pick you up and throw you. C4 may not move you two feet, but it's gonna cut right through you. I deployed this really good-shaped single Marine with no responsibilities, and I came home bandaged up on all four limbs with a son and a girlfriend. I just never accepted that life's responsibilities were going to be any different for me because I got blown up. Anything worth doing is worth doing right and anything worthwhile is never easy. If I can find a way to be in control of my destiny, it's game on. I might not succeed at everything, but I'll be there to find out. I'm trying to kill this deer in my yard, so I've got an AR at each level of my house, so if he pops up, I'm gonna take him out. Get up, get over it, get going.
