Welcome to another episode of Death Don't Do Fiction, the AIPT Movies podcast! The podcast about the enduring legacy of our favorite movies! It's September, so that means it's time for our “Mechtember” series, where we cover movies involving all things robotic!! In this week's episode, Alex, Tim, and guest Bill Mueller discuss Keita Amemiya's 1995 robo-showdown, Mechanical Violator Hakaider!Mechanical violation! Awkward sound mixing! A glowing brain! Cool, glowing hands! An evil, robotic Angel! Excessive use of smoke! Dramatic flower burning! Subtext so overt it's effectively hypertext! Amazing use of dummies! Soldiers that look like the Minions from Despicable Me! Imaginative use of an 80s panel van! Extreme head violence! Bleeding walls! Unexpected arm removal! All this and more in a movie that's possibly TOO ambitious, with incredible designs and special effects, that feels like it was made for fans of RoboCop, Power Rangers, and The Guyver! In addition, Bill shares his spoiler-free thoughts on the original Terminator, while Alex does the same for 1989's Tango & Cash, and the Hong Kong action classics, the Iron Angels trilogy! You can find Death Don't Do Fiction on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, or wherever you get your podcasts. As always, if you enjoy the podcast, be sure to leave us a positive rating, subscribe to the show, and tell your friends! The Death Don't Do Fiction podcast brings you the latest in movie news, reviews, and more! Hosted by supposed “industry vets,” Alex Harris and Tim Gardiner, the show gives you a peek behind the scenes from two filmmakers with oddly nonexistent filmographies. You can find Alex on Twitter, Bluesky, or Letterboxd @actionharris. This episode's guest, Bill Mueller, can be found on Bluesky. Tim can't be found on social media because he doesn't exist. If you have any questions or suggestions for the Death Don't Do Fiction crew, they can be reached at aiptmoviespod@gmail.com, or you can find them on Twitter or Instagram @aiptmoviespod.Theme song is “We Got it Goin On” by Cobra Man.
A little late on the upload, but Adam and Lexi talk about what they were reading in the lead to September. Adam geeks about the new Kamen Rider. Lexi suggests we start reading spooky stuff. She recommended Hidden Valley Road which shockingly DOESN'T deal with Ranch Dressing. Why are you still reading this? Listen to them talk about their stuff. Also read Frankenstein since we will be talking about it next month!
I'm heading back to the first Kamen Rider series and seeing where it all began with the first two episodes of the show. Takeshi Hongo gets taken by the evil Shocker Corporation and is turned into a cyborg. The weather might be cooling down but these HOT TAKES sure aren't… sorry, that's the best I got for today… We catch up on Kamen Rider, then get one last chance to about our Summer shows before they end.
Welcome back! This week, the dudes are doin' two flicks: a new topic and an old favorite. We saw Shin Godzilla remastered in 4K on the big screen together and decided to revisit it since it was one of the first episodes we ever covered on here and have taken a lot of new things away from it with a rewatch. On top of that, we're talking about its counterpart: Shin Kamen Rider, the Japanese Tokusatsu Superhero movie from 2023. Buckle up and let's dive in...
It's another episode of tangents. Julio Jon and Ryan talk about tiktok shop, dice, in-n-out, coyotes, Cheesecake Factory, Kamen Rider, and a bunch of stuff inbetween. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ujYWe1kI2Ns
Here comes a new story. Or three, to be more precise. With our Journey to the Worst in the bag, Kyrie and I leave Dragon Ball behind for the moment, and head to new territory. But what could we possibly cover where we'd have that same magic combination of undercovered work that we can act as experts about, and that we're very passionate about? It's a short list, I think. But you know? Pretty Cure, Super Sentai, and Kamen Rider? Yeah, I think that makes the cut. We're starting Sunday Henshin Time with the first two episodes of Futari wa Pretty Cure, Tokusou Sentai Dekaranger, and Kamen Rider Blade. And we're riding this baby all the way. I suspect we'll die before we fully catch up XD but enjoy the ride until then! We've got Sunday Henshin Time podcast art in progress, but for now, please enjoy the beautiful Scanline Talks art by @dreamysuite on Bluesky! To start out, SHT is going up on the Scanline Talks feed, but once we have a few eps posted, it will get its own feed! Our intro music is Scene47 蒼空 ~aoi~ by Kaneko Kazuki, with gratitude.

In our third Henshin Men bonus re-upload, Chris returns as a pinch hitter for Jake to discuss the sequel to Masked Rider: The First, Kamen Rider: The Next. This was Chris's (and Nate's) first exposure to Kamen Rider V3, and as you'll hear, their opinions on the character have evolved since this episode. What's exciting is this film is finally getting an official U.S. release on blu-ray from Media Blasters. Enjoy! The original shownotes: “Sixty-nine, dudes!” And now that the obvious joke is out of the way: Christopher Riner returns as a second-time guest because Jake Hambrick was busy with family (good for him!). But Mr. Riner can't help but ask, “Why me?” The film he discusses with Nathan, Kamen Rider: The Next, is a secret J-horror movie complete with a Sadako knockoff. (Making it accidentally perfect for Halloween season). To say it's a far cry from its predecessor, Masked Rider: The First, would be an understatement. It's dour, convoluted, and confusing. But it does do one thing better than The First. What's that? Let's just say it made Chris think Koichi Sakamoto was involved with this movie. Listen to hear this and more in the latest Henshin Men! This episode was edited by Christopher Riner with Nathan Marchand. Follow Henshin Men on Twitter: @HenshinMenPod. In this Henshin Men re-upload, you'll hear Jake's first podcast appearance. He joined Nate to discuss Masked Rider: The First (aka Kamen Rider: The First), which is now getting a blu-ray re-release from Media Blasters. The first episode of our Kamen Rider Faiz coverage is coming soon! The original shownotes: Henshin Men goes from a reimagining of the original Kamen Rider (1971) to a reimagining of Kamen Rider Black and now back to what Nathan says is the superior reimagining of the 1971 series and manga: Masked Rider: The First (2005). He's joined by aspiring podcaster Jake Hambrick to dive into this unique Japanese superhero film. It borrows more from Shotaro Ishinomori's manga than the TV series, so it lacks tropes like the iconic henshin pose, and has an almost Sam Raimi Spider-Man flair to it. What truly makes it stand out, though, is its theme: the power of beauty. Throw in some great practical effects and solid fight scenes, and you have a winner in the remake debate. This episode was edited by Christopher Riner with Nathan Marchand. Follow Henshin Men on Twitter: @HenshinMenPod. #KamenRiderBlackRX #KamenRider #Toei #Tokusatsu #MaskedRider Kamen Rider Black RX marked the end of the Showa Era rider shows even with respect to Shin, ZO, and J which came later. In many ways, Black RX was an inspiration of what we would get from future Kamen Rider shows starting with Kamen Rider Kuuga. And also it was an actual sequel series to a previous Kamen Rider season which was a big deal and first for the franchise. At any rate, sit back as CJ and Prime talk about Rider greatness.

#KamenRider #KamenRiderHibiki #Tokusatsu #Toku Kamen Rider Hibiki stands out amongst the other Kamen Rider shows especially during Heisei Era Rider shows. From the Kamen Rider designs down to the enemies, this show initially stood out as being very unique. But in typical business, the show ended up pivoting into a different direction that was in line with previous rider shows. What you end up with is a show that has two different pathways tonally and a movie that in a way brings the show back into its old form.

Nathan (“The TsuBro”), Chris (“Sentai Guy”), and Jake (“The Metal Don”) weren't prepared for a double-whammy of Akio Jissouji in their last batch of Ultraman (1966) episodes—and Nathan's seen them before! It doesn't help that they recorded way past the witching hour. Rockets up the anus?! On episode 34?! All of this broke the show's format worse than any other before it. That's the power of Jissouji! Regardless, it's a bittersweet episode for Nathan as he closes this chapter of the HPV3 tokusatsu journey, but he gets to talk about Mefilas, the second death of Pigmon, and other high points. The boys also give out series awards at the end. (Here's a hint: #IdeSweep). Next time: Kamen Rider 555 (Faiz)! Our apologies for the lateness of this episode. Life, uh, found a way to delay postproduction. Spidey has to protect Jameson and Mary Jane from a very Kamen Rider-esque Beetle and his assault on the Daily Bugle! We talk about the limitations of casting J.K. Simmons, the challenges of utilizing the S.H.I.E.L.D. team, Mary Jane working as a journalist, and how some of the show's best humor comes, shockingly, from Scott Mosier of Kevin Smith's View Askewniverse. We're watching Ultimate Spider-Man: Season 1, Episode 16: “Beetle Mania”.
