“There are instances in history of many asuras – Ravana, Kamsa, Hiranyakashipu – to whom the Lord appeared in various incarnations just to kill. Therefore God's mercy is shown to the asuras if they are fortunate enough to be killed by Him.” (Shrila Prabhupada, Bhagavad-gita, 16.20 Purport)
“Vasudeva took the opportunity of Kamsa's benevolence and informed him that his atheistic activities were also due to this misconception of life—namely taking the material body to be the self. When Vasudeva talked with Kamsa in such an illuminating way, Kamsa became very pleased, and his guilt for killing his nephews subdued. With the permission of his sister Devaki and brother-in-law Vasudeva, he returned to his home with a relieved mind.” (Krishna, The Supreme Personality of Godhead, Vol 1, Ch 4)
Why should companies rethink compensation strategies? In this episode of the Amazing Teams podcast, hosts Doug and Una sit down with Lola Han, founder and CEO of Kamsa, a company dedicated to helping businesses create data-driven compensation strategies. Lola, a seasoned expert with experience at companies like Zendesk, shares her insights into how organizations can structure fair, equitable compensation that cultivates employee growth and satisfaction. The conversation dives into the nuances of compensation philosophy, pay transparency, and how to keep employees motivated and appreciated in the long term. Key Takeaways:● The importance of pay transparency: A phased approach to sharing compensation philosophies helps avoid confusion, ensuring employees understand how pay is determined and when increases or promotions can be expected.● Compensation as a foundation for employee satisfaction: Fair pay is the groundwork for appreciation, but recognition through small, regular gestures is key to keeping employees engaged and valued.● Creative perks don't substitute fair compensation: Unique perks may be fun, but without fair compensation, they fall flat. Lola discusses the role of meaningful perks within an overall compensation strategy. "Kamsa was the son of Ugrasena, of the Bhoja dynasty. It is said that Kamsa was the most demonic of all the Bhoja dynasty kings. Immediately after hearing the prophecy from the sky, he caught hold of Devaki's hair and was just about to kill her with his sword.” (Krishna, The Supreme Personality of Godhead, Vol 1, Ch 1)

We are two days past Tisha B'Av , and the lesson s should still be on our minds. This year , I saw an astounding lesson in the story of Kamsa and Bar Kamsa, an important lesson in Emunah and Bitachon . Why was it necessary for this story to be brought down? While this was the catalyst for the destruction of the Bet Hamikdash , that's not why it was destroyed. There was much more Sinat Hinam behind it. But t here is one part, at the end of the story , which is important for u s: When the host th rew Bar Kamsa out of the party, the rabbis didn't say anything. Of course, we know that Bar Kamsa was not the best of people. He ended up snitching to the government and caus ed the destruction of the Bet Hamikdash with his treacherous plan. But the rabbis didn't say anything, and by doing so , they were basically agreeing that Bar Kamsa should be thrown out of the party. Why is this important? Our rabbis te ach an important lesson in Emunah and Bitachon, which is that anything that happens to us because of our deeds, we are really in agreement with . We might not be able to admit it, or see straight, but anything that happens to us, we really decided that it should happen to us. We see this from the famous story of David Hamelech and Batsheva. David Hamelech didn't really do anything wrong , as the Gemara says, W hoever says that David Hamelech sinned is mistaken . Nonetheless, he was giv en a masha l of a man who had many sheep. When a guest came to visi t, there was a poor man who owed him money. So i nstead of slaughtering one of his own sheep for the guest, he took the poor man's only sheep and slaughter ed it . The prophet then asked David Hamelech , “ W hat should be with t he wealthy man that takes the poor man's last sheep? “ And David Hamelech answered , “ He deserves a horrible punishment .“ He didn't really do anything terribly wron g. He had a right to take the sheep. He was owed the sheep. But, come on, you have more sh eep for yourself ! In essence, David Hamelech was deciding that when he took Batsheva, although it might have been legal, he had other wives and he did not need to do that. He was deciding his own court case, so to say. The rabbis tell us that in our lives, the same thing happens. You might be sitting at a table, having a discussion about somebody or some thing, and you might say, “ T hat is so horrible! How dare they they speak lashon hara like that! ” But the truth is, you speak lashon hara as well. You are actually deciding your own destiny. And so, what happens to you, believe it or not, you agreed with! You were the one that said it should happen. Of course, when it happens, you ask, H ow could God do this ? But deep down, you agreed. It was fair. That is what happen ed in th is story. When the rabbis decided that the host had a right to throw Bar Kamsa out of the party because of what he did, they were , in essence , saying that the Jewish people had a right to be thrown out of Eretz Yisrael, because of what they did. They decided that it was all right for the host to throw the unruly guest out of the party. So too, God is the H ost and we were the unruly guest. And the rabbis decided that that was what was supposed to happen. When you think about it, this is an amazing concept. Anything that happens to us, we ourselves agree that it 's just. It says that after 120 years, we will all say, “ God's judgment is just. ” Whatever God does is righteous and just. We don't always see it that way, especially not in this world. We don't have all the facts, and we don't have all the details. But we have to know that if we were asked, we would say , God is just, and God is righteous. That is one of the lessons of the Bet Hamikdash ‘s destruction: We agree d that this is exactly what should have happened. It's a heavy lesson . Sometimes we look at life and its events as unfair and unjust. But we decided that that is exactly what should happen. B'Ezrat Hashem , only good things for everybody . Have a wonderful day.
There is another lesson from the story of Kamsa and Bar Kamsa. Let's back it up for a moment : As we know, an unknown man has a friend, and an enemy. His friend 's name is Kamsa, and his enemy's name is Bar Kamsa . It's question able whether this is a father and son, or two people with similar name s . The Gemara says that the Bet Hamikdash was destroyed because of Kamsa and Bar Kamsa. In this story, an unknown man mistakenly invites his enemy , Bar Kamsa, to his party when he really intended to invite Kamsa. He had sent his messenger to Kamsa with an invitation, but Bar Kamsa got invited instead . According to most opinions, Kamsa was not at the part y, because Bar Kamsa was accidentally invited instead of him. Then Bar Kamsa was thrown out of the party because the unknown man didn't like him. The question is asked, why are we blaming Kamsa ? He was never even at the party, and he's the one that was liked by the unknown host. What does he have to do with our story? There are different answers given. One answer is that in truth, he had nothing to do with it. The Bet Hamikdash was destroyed over confusion between Kamsa and Bar Kamsa, but Kamsa is not to blame at all. That is what the Chida says. But most others do blame Kamsa. Why? One answer is that if Kamsa was a good frien d of th e host, and he knew that the host had an enemy, it's his job, as a good friend, to make peace. This is an important lesson for us. If you know your friend is in an argument, don't be there to back up the argument . As an outsider, you don't have the same biases as he does. You can see things straight. Your job, as a good friend, is to put some peaceful ideas into his mind. That's our first lesson. That is why Kamsa the friend was responsible - for not intervening. The second lesson is that the whole story started because Kamsa needed a messenger sent to him in order to invite him to the party. The m essenger didn't come, so he didn't go to the party. This is where all the confusion started. If, in truth, he would have gone to the party, that might have avoided the whole story. He would have been there, and he could've said, “ C alm down it's a mistake. It's a confusion. “ Why did he even need a messenger to begin with? Why not just go to the party ? The rabbis explain that Kamsa with somebody who stood on ceremony. That is why he wasn't at the party, and that is why he needed a messenger to invite him. And th at is where the whole story started. If Kamsa would not have stood on ceremony, th is never would have happened. This is another important lesson for us. How often do fights come about, because people think that they weren't invited to a party ? Invitations get lost in the mail, and people do forget. But if you are really a friend, and you think you should be at the br is , or at whatever event it is, go anyway. A good friend goes anyway and does not stand on ceremony. And if you got the invite instead of your wife, or vice versa … you're a couple! How many invites do they have to send? How many text messages do they have to make? Don't stand on ceremony . T hat is the lesson of Kamsa and Bar Kamsa. Have a wonderful day.
Many people learn the Gemara in Masechet Gittin on Tisha BAv, ( 57A) which tells the story of Kamsa and Bar Kamsa, and ends with the following statement: “ Come and see how great is the power of shame, for the Holy One assisted Bar Kamsa in his plot to take revenge for the shame to which he had been subj ected . And Hashem destroyed His house, the Bet Hamikdash, and burned His sanctuary.” In the end, if not for the fact that Hashem , so to say , caused the hachamim to make a mistake, in allowing Bar Kamsa to continue with his plot , they could have stopped him . They could have ac cepted the blemished offering, and the plot could have ended. So why did it happen? Because Hashem allowed it to happen. And why did Hashem allow to happen? Because Bar Kamsa was shamed and embarrassed and thrown out of the party. Although what he ended up doing was a horrific thing (tattling to the Romans and causing the Bet Hamikdash to be destroyed with his horrible plot ) God allowed it to happen , because Bar Kamsa was shamed. Rav Leib Chasman uses this story to teach us an u nbelievable concept on the extent of our obligations to treat others with respect and avoid embarrassing them. The host , who thr ew out Bar Kamsa, seemingly acted properly , as from Bar Kamsa's subsequent behavior , we can see what kind of fellow he was. B ecause of personal insult , he was willing to slander the entire Jewish people to the Caesar , and engage in an elaborate scheme to manipulate him into attacking them ! He was clearly a petty and cruel man , who cared more about his own pride than the welfare of the entire Jewish people. Certainly, you would not wish to host such a guest , and would feel entitled to treat him with disdain, And yet the Gemara says on this, “ Great is the power of shame.“ We are talking about a lowlife fellow, and yet, even for him- God cares about his dignity. We aren't talking about somebody who gets up and says something negative about the Torah. There are rules and regulations about when we protest and when we don't. But in this story, this man came to a party . He didn't do anything wrong at the party. He was just a bum that showed up at a party, and he had no r ight to be embarrassed or shamed. This is an important lesson for us. Sometimes we take the law into our own hands and embarrass and shame people when they are not allowed to be embarrassed ashamed. I remember many years ago when I was in yeshiva, there was a fellow in a different yeshiva who was taking money out of people 's pockets in the coat room. Obviously, he was a poor fellow who did not have money. He was not a hardened criminal. Somebody once saw him taking money out of a pocket, put him in a headlock, and called the police. When word got to the Ro sh Yeshiva, he said that they had no right to do that. “The boy may be a thief but you c an not embarrass him publicly like that. You had no right to put him in a headlock or anything like that. T here are rules and regulations about how we treat thieves , and who is supposed to be embarrassed, and when. It's an important lesson, and it's actually the lesson of the Churban, of Tisha B'Av, that we just experienced. We should strengthen ourselves and be careful, and realize the power of shame. Have a wonderful day.
After saving mother Earth from the clutches of the cruel asura Hiranyaksha, Lord Vishnu, as Narasimha ,kills his vicious brother Hiranyakasipu and showers his grace on the great child devotee Prahlada! That was in Krutha Yuga and the first part of the boon granted to his dwarapalakas Jaya and Vijaya who attained salvation. In their second birth as Ravana and Kumbhakarna the Lord descended as Sri Rama and saved the Devas by Killing them. That was in Tretha Yuga The last and final birth of the dwarapalakas was that of Sisupala and Dantavaktra the personification of evil and terror! Lord Krishna's avatar, thus comes in Dwapara Yuga that became notorious for the evil and unrighteous acts of kings like Kamsa, Jarasandha and Sisupala. True to the saying ‘ yadayadahi dharmasya glanirbhavathi Bharatha abhyutthana madharmasya thadatmanam srujamyaham' the Lord took avatar as Krishna in the Yadava community. Sri Rama chose Kausalya as his mother while Krishna chose Devaki and Vasdeva as his parents. While Sri Rams totally compressed his divinity and exhibited the qualities of an ordinary mortal and suffered all the vicissitudes of royal and family life, it was not so with Krishna. Adi kavi Valmiki praises Sri Rama as “Ramo vigrahavan dhamaha”. Krishna was born in the prison to Devaki in his original resplendent form with four hands, the conch and the disc! The parents were overwhelmed with excitement and indescribable joy. Soon the child transformed itself into an ordinary baby! From the beginning Krishna exhibited his divinity and celestial powers! The prison doors open by themselves, the Yamuna cleaves to allow Vasudeva to take the child to Gokulam and in the terrible downpour Adisesha becomes the umbrella to protect the child!
“Bhishmadeva was a pure devotee, and as a military marshal he constantly remembered the battlefield feature of the Lord as Partha-sarathi, the chariot driver of Arjuna. Therefore, the Lord's pastime as Partha-sarathi is also eternal. The pastimes of the Lord, beginning from His birth at the prison house of Kamsa up to the mausala-lila at the end, all move one after another in all the universes, just as the clock hand moves from one point to another. And in such pastimes His associates like the Pandavas and Bhishma are constant eternal companions.” (Shrila Prabhupada, Shrimad Bhagavatam, 1.9.39 Purport)
Who were those 7 sons of Devki and Vasudev killed by Kans, the king of Mathura before the birth of Krishna? In the book Sri Hari-vamsa (2nd chapter of the Visnu-parva) it is written that Hamsa, Suvikrama, Kratha, Damana, Ripu-mardana and Krodha-hanta, who are known as the sad-garbha (six unborn children), are the sons of the demon Kalanemi. They performed intense austerities to worship the universal grandsire Brahma, unbeknown to their own grandfather Hiranyakasipu. Brahma, being satisfied with their extreme penances, granted them the boon of protection from death according to their prayers. Later, when Hiranyakasipu heard about this incident, he became enraged and said, “You have worshipped Brahma without letting me know, thus I have no affection for impudent people such as you. Your father himself will kill all of you. In your next life all six of you will take birth in the womb of Devaki and your father Kalanemi will be born as Kamsa. That very Kamsa will be your murderer.” Due to this curse of Hiranyakasipu they took birth in the womb of Devaki and were killed by Kamsa, the incarnation of Kalanemi. Prior to this, they were well known by the names Smara etc. and were the sons of Marici Muni. They laughed after seeing the universal grandsire Brahma running after his own daughter. Due to this offence of looking down on a great personality, they had to take birth as demons. In the Srimad Bhagavata (10.85.47-57) it is mentioned that due to the prayer of Mother Devaki, Sri Rama and Sri Krsna brought back her six dead sons from Sri Baliraja's Sutala-puri: marice sat putra urnayam prathame'ntare devah kam jahasur viksya sutam yabhitum udyatam tenasurim agan yonim adhunavadya-karmana hiranyakasipor jata nitas te yoga-mayaya devakya udare jata rajan kamsa-vihimsitah sa tan socaty atmajan svams ta ime'dhyasate'ntike itah etan pranesyamah matri soka apanuttaye tatah sapat vinirmuktah lokam yasyanti vijjvarah smarah udgithah parisvangah patangah ksudrabhrt ghrni sadime mat prasadena punah yasyanti sat gatim This means that after going to Sutala-puri Sri Krsna told Bali, the king of the Daityas, “O lord of the Daityas, during the manvantara of Svayambhuva, six demigod-like sons were born in the womb of Urna-devi, the wife of Maharsi Marici. Seeing Brahma running after his own daughter (namely Sarasvati) they mocked him. As a result of this sin – hiranyakasipu saksat kalanemi-ksetre – they took demoniac births as the sons of Kalanemi who was the son of Hiranyakasipu. Again from there they were forced to take birth in the womb of Devaki through Yogamaya and killed by Kamsa. Mother Devaki is mourning for them, considering them to be her own sons. Presently they are residing in your abode. To alleviate her maternal sorrow I will take them away from this place to meet their mother. Finally, they will go back to the planets of the demigods having been freed from their curse and from lamentation. These six sons of Marici namely Smara, Udgitha, Parisvanga, Patanga, Ksudrabhrta and Ghrni will eventually attain the Supreme Abode by My mercy.” The seventh child of Devaki and Vasudeva was Balram, who was the incarnation of Sheshnag. Vasudeva prayed hard to Lord Vishnu to save this child. Then, by the power of Lord Vishnu's Yoga Maya, the child was secretly transformed into the womb of Rohini, another wife of Vasudeva (she lived in Vrindavan), while everyone thought that she had lost that child due to miscarriage. Soon Rohini gave birth to the child and it was grown in the village of Vrindavan.
Devaki and Vasudeva were imprisoned by Kamsa due to the paranoia that had taken root in the tyrant's mind. Her six children were killed, while the seventh Balarama survived after being transferred by divine will into the uterus of Rohini, one of the other wives of Vasudeva.

Vaishnavas sing these songs to bring peace, prosperity and Divine Grace. Andal assumes the guise of a cowherd girl in these 30 verses. Andal appears intent upon performing a particular religious vow to marry the Lord, thereby obtain His everlasting company, and inviting all her girl-friends to join her. Towards the end we learn that she did not actually perform a religious rite; but is simply praying to be granted the service of the Lord for eternity. She yearns for everlasting happiness and service of the Lord. You were born as the son of one lady; and on one night, you become the son of another lady in hiding. Kamsa was unable to withstand you; you frustrated all his plans to harm you. You made useless his very intents. Like a tall fire you stand, O Lord. We have come begging to you to see if you will give us emancipation. To match goddess Lakshmi's beauty and service, we sing to you. Please rid us of our sorrows and give us joy. With this sentiment, come lets do the paavai nombu penance, o girls!

This second class will discuss a little of whose who in Krishna lila, the past powerful lives of Kamsa, how he represents misguided intelligence, and how to be aware of and rid this unwanted tendency from our heart.
Putana, the "killer of infants", was sent by Krishna's evil uncle Kamsa to kill Krishna. ... Putana had smeared her breast with a Mandana, an intoxicant, to kill Krishna. However, Krishna squeezed her breasts and took her life away (prana), as well as her milk. Check out my latest episode on the auspicious festival of Janmashtami. Speaking about Sri Krishna is like introducing one to one's self,” Amma told the thousands of people gathered in Amritapuri to celebrate Krishna Jayanti. The day had been filled with festivities—Go Puja1 in the morning, a procession of young gopis, gopas, Radhas and Krishnas in the afternoon, uriyadi2 until the sun went down, and then Bala Gopala Puja to the recitation of the Srimad Bhagavatam4 until the midnight hour. Once the midnight hour arrived, Amma began leading everyone is bhajans celebrating the Lord: “Agatanayi Agatanayi Vishnu Devan.” In Amma's satsang, which followed the bhajans, Amma stressed the infinite potential dormant in human beings and the power of their free will. “We can become like Sri Krishna; we can become like Kamsa,” Amma said. “We can become like Rama; we can also become like Ravana.” Amma then spoke about the glory that was Sri Krishna. “Life is not mathematics, science, logic or philosophy,” Amma said. “It is a continuous flow of experience. We can transform our lives into an experience of spreading happiness to one and all. Sri Krishna's life was the perfect example of this. If all our infinite, innate auspicious qualities were to take the form of a human being, the beautiful result would be Lord Krishna. He expressed the infinite power inherent in humankind to its fullness. It is for this reason that he is glorified as the Purnavatar—the complete incarnation of God. Sri Krishna was both ordinary and extraordinary at the same time. He was human and yet not human. He was complete in all ways.” Amma concluded her talk by stressing the importance of innocent love and faith, saying that their birth in the heart of the gopis was in fact a greater miracle than Krishna's lifting of Govardhana Hill. “We need to transcend logic and firmly establish ourselves in innocent love and faith. We need to look at life through such eyes. Then all experiences will become blissful, like amrita [nectar]. That is the message of Lord Krishna's life. … Sri Krishna's words and actions demonstrated the different facets of life, the secrets of para-dharma and apara-dharma4 , and the subtleties of action, inaction and enlightened action. To understand Sri Krishna's message, we need unwavering love, devotion and faith.” Bhagavan Krishn's unparalleled influence on the world has prevailed for thousands of years, pervading every aspect of life, including devotion, literature, the arts and even political strategy. The Bhagwad Gita is the core text of Sanatan Dharma, which Krishn gave to us by teaching Arjun. It is a scripture that transcends all religious boundaries. The Bhagavatam defines Krishn as a purna avatar – a complete incarnation. The word ‘avatar' means ‘to descend'. It signifies the totality of consciousness assuming a human form. Krishn was a purna avatar in that he always abided in the True Self – ever perfect, with no ups and downs or mental disturbances. However, just as a policeman goes undercover dressing as a thief to catch a thief, so did Krishn; he went down to the level of man. When we see how some people live – devoid of dharma, with no sense of charity, just greedily grabbing and accumulating what is not theirs, hurting others, wasting this precious gift of human birth just eating and drinking – we can understand Krishn's avatar as descent; going down to each one's level in order to show them how to live life in a way that would bring peace to themselves and to others. Through his life and teachings, Krishn awoke bhakti, jnana and the true spirit of karma in us. Bhakti is love for the imperishable. From an objective point of view, it is the love towards one's goal. Without it, one cannot move forward on any path. In any area of action, it is love that elevates a person. Whether a book is about science or history, the words in it are comprised of letters; they are its foundation. In the same way, the foundation of any path is bhakti. Bhakti is nothing but constant and continuous remembrance of God.
Bhagavad Gita Ch. 2 v. 37 - 40, The Birth & Killings of Krishna + The Yoga of Knowledge (Sankhya): In this episode, we hear about Krishna’s birth by Devaki & Vasudeva with the ominous prediction spoken from the sky (Vahni Akasha - Ākāśa) that he would be the one to kill his uncle, the insidiously evil Kansa (Kaṁsa), king of Mathura. All this as background description to the first verse of mantra Krishna Ashtakam (Krishnashtakam Kṛṣṇāṣṭakam) which references the killing of Kamsa & his demonic henchman, Chanura (Cāṇūra). In Bhagavad Gītā verses we wrap up the Sāṁkhya perspective (Darśana) and begin the teachings about yoga - which are summed up in a word, “Equanimity”. Please take a peek and hear it for yourself. Daily Halacha Podcast - Daily Halacha By Rabbi Eli J. Mansour
The Gemara says, "Do anything a host tell you to do, except leave." A guest is obliged to obey his host, unless his host tells him to leave the home. The commentators raise the question of why a guest is entitled to remain in someone’s home against the host’s will. Seemingly, a host reserves the right to tell his guest to leave. How can we explain the Gemara’s comment? The Sefat Emet (Rav Yehuda Aryeh Leib Alter of Ger, 1847-1905) explains that this provision was made in response to the tragic incident of Kamsa and Bar Kamsa, which the Gemara relates in Masechet Gittin. An invitation intended for Kamsa was mistakenly delivered to Bar Kamsa, and when Bar Kamsa arrived at the party, the host forced him to leave. Bar Kamsa was very embarrassed, and decided to avenge his disgrace by going to the Roman emperor and telling him that the Jews rebelled against him, ultimately causing the destruction of Jerusalem. In response, the Sages enacted this provision that if somebody comes to a function to which he was not invited, he should not be told to leave. And if the host tells him to leave, he does not have to listen. Thus, if a person, for whatever reason, attends a function uninvited, the host should not embarrass him by telling him to leave. We should learn the lesson taught by the tragedy of Kamsa and Bar Kamsa, and ensure not to embarrass a fellow Jew, even in a case of an uninvited guest.

“Heracles (/ˈhɛrəkliːz/ herr-ə-kleez; Ancient Greek: Ἡρακλῆς, Hēraklēs, from Hēra, “Hera“, and kleos, “glory”[1]), born Alcaeus[2] (Ἀλκαῖος, Alkaios) or Alcides[3] (Ἀλκείδης, Alkeidēs), was a divine hero in Greek mythology, the son of Zeus and Alcmene, foster son of Amphitryon[4] and great-grandson (and half-brother) of Perseus. He was the greatest of the Greek heroes, a paragon of masculinity, the ancestor of royal clans who claimed to be Heracleidae (Ἡρακλεῖδαι) and a champion of the Olympian order against chthonic monsters. In Rome and the modern West, he is known as Hercules, with whom the later Roman Emperors, in particular Commodus and Maximian, often identified themselves. The Romans adopted the Greek version of his life and works essentially unchanged, but added anecdotal detail of their own, some of it linking the hero with the geography of the Central MeMegasthanediterranean. Details of his cult were adapted to Rome as well' Megasthanes took the legend of Krishna to Greece and had it incorporated in Greek Legends. See the excerpts towards the close of the Post. Similarities between Krishna and Hercules. Krishna's Killing of Kalinga is similar to Hercules with Hydra. Krishna's killing of Kesi,Arishtasura, Kamsa and Hercules's step mother have a striking parallel Hercules lifting the world Legend, these are very clos to Krishna. It is of interest to note that Hercules is also associated with/as Balarama, Lord Shiva! This information of Greek God being Krishna may prove to be incorrect, but it proves Krishna legend was so alive( I am of the opinion Krishna is a Historical Figure) that the Greeks took him to Greece! Check the Links. Source: http://experiencehinduism.com/interesting-stories/heracles-derived-from-krishna http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Megasthenes%27_Herakles#Megasthenes.27_Herakles_as_Krishna ” According to Arrian, Diodorus, and Strabo, Megasthenes described an Indian tribe called Sourasenoi, who especially worshipped Herakles in their land, and this land had two cities, Methora and Kleisobora, and a navigable river, the Jobares. As was common in the ancient period, the Greeks sometimes described foreign gods in terms of their own divinities, and there is a little doubt that the Sourasenoi refers to the Shurasenas, a branch of the Yadu dynasty to which Krishna belonged; Herakles to Krishna, or Hari-Krishna: Mehtora to Mathura, where Krishna was born; Kleisobora to Krishnapura, meaning “the city of Krishna”; and the Jobares to the Yamuna, the famous river in the Krishna story. Quintus Curtius also mentions that when Alexander the Great confronted Porus, Porus's soldiers were carrying an image of Herakles in their vanguard.” — Krishna: a sourcebook, Edwin Francis Bryant, Oxford University Press US, 20 https://ramanisblog.in/2014/03/05/lord-krishna-was-also-a-greek-god-hercules/ --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/ramanispodcast/message

“Devaki was very much afraid of her brother Kamsa because he had already killed so many of her children. She used to remain very anxious about Krishna. In the Vishnu Purana it is stated that in order to pacify Devaki, all the demigods, along with their wives, used to always visit her to encourage her not to be afraid that her son would be killed by Kamsa. Krishna, who was within her womb, was to appear not only to diminish the burden of the world but specifically to protect the interest of the Yadu dynasty, and certainly to protect Devaki and Vasudeva.” (Krishna, The Supreme Personality of Godhead, Vol 1, Ch 2)

“While Vasudeva was carrying his son Krishna in the falling rain, Lord Shesha in the shape of a serpent spread His hood over the head of Vasudeva so that he would not be hampered by the rainfall. Vasudeva came onto the bank of the Yamuna and saw that the water of the Yamuna was roaring with waves and that the whole span was full of foam. Still, in that furious feature, the river gave passage to Vasudeva to cross, just as the great Indian Ocean gave a path to Lord Rama when He was bridging over the gulf.” (Krishna, The Supreme Personality of Godhead, Vol 1, Ch 3)

Having taken his birth in the Bhoja family, he decided to become the deadly enemy of the Yadu dynasty; Krishna was going to take birth in that family, and Kamsa was very much afraid that he would be killed by Krishna, just as he was killed in his last birth.” (Krishna, The Supreme Personality of Godhead, Vol 1, Ch 1)
“Within the prison, shackled in iron chains, Vasudeva and Devaki gave birth to a male child year after year, and Kamsa, thinking each of the babies to be the incarnation of Vishnu, killed them one after another. He was particularly afraid of the eighth child, but after the visit of Narada, he came to the conclusion that any child might be Krishna. Therefore it was better to kill all the babies who took birth of Devaki and Vasudeva.” (Krishna, The Supreme Personality of Godhead, Vol 1, Ch 1)

Episode 12 - We finally get started with Krishna. His mother and father were both of the house of Yadu in Mathura-- Krishna's mother Devaki was King Ugrasena's daughter. Unfortunately, Devaki's brother, Crown Prince Kamsa was a bad guy, and he got an early warning that his sister's eighth child would be the death of him. After a palace coup, King Kamsa threw Devaki and Vasudeva into prison and killed their first six babies as soon as they were born. The seventh child, Balaram, was magically transported into the womb of Rohini-- Vasudevas other wife living in Vraja with the Gopas. Unlike Balaram, Krishna managed to be born in his natural mother's womb, but was secretly exchanged with the Gopa chieftain's daughter within hours of their birth. As far as anyone could tell, Krishna was born to the Gopi Yashoda, and Devaki had a daughter who was killed by Kamsa as soon as she was discovered. So, while Krishna and Balaram are technically full brothers, it appeared as if they were unrelated, and Krishna was simply the son of a cowherder chieftain. This arrangement worked well in keeping him hidden from Kamsa, but it must have been tricky convincing everyone that he really had royal blood and wasn't just some low-caste nobody! We'll see how he pulls this off in later episodes. The Bhagavata Purana is so utterly dazzled by Krishna's divinity that these everyday practicalities seem to fade out in the glare, but I'll try to keep a lookout for how the mundane folks around him-- those who did not recognize his divinity-- tried to make sense of his story and his position in society.I have to admit that so far Balaram is a bit of a cipher to me. We are told that he is the avatara of Adisesha, who is the Cosmic Snake; Vishnu's pal. Somehow Adisesha appears as himself when Vasudeva makes his journey with Krishna to Vraja, but Balram was already a child at the time. Later, we are told that Balaram and Krishna are equally avataras of Vishnu. Hopefully we'll be able to untangle this riddle as we go along. So far, I admit that I don't quite get it!If anyone can explain to me how Balaram relates to Krishna, I'd love to hear it. I'll try to come up with an analysis of the two characters as we move further along into the story. They make an amazing contrast, often taking opposite sides on important issues.
Episode 15 - This episode is about Krishna's spectacular entry into international politics. Having established his manhood by cuckolding the entire tribe of cowherders, Krishna returns to Mathura to get his revenge on Kamsa. Killing Kamsa has repercussions, however, because Kamsa had a powerful ally in King Jarasandh. Krishna ends up killing more than 130 million soldiers as he defeated 17 armies raised by Jarasandh and an 18th army belonging to the Black Greek. You'd think there were no soldiers left in ancient India after that, but Krishna is only getting started! Krishna also checks in on his cousins the Pandavas, sending an embassador to report back on how the boys are being treated. Our two stories are beginning to come together, so next episode we'll have some more adventures of Krishna and Balaram, get them married off (16,000 wives!!!), and see how their sons come along, and then we'll finally be caught up, and will resume the story of the Pandavas.

Chapter 10. The Lord of Vraja.“It's what Krishna taught, what he represents, that matters, not whether these beautiful lessons came from a real man who lived long ago in the past, a man whose life story has become mostly the work of myth, or someone who is entirely a fictitious creation. Vishnu decided to take on this avatar for the same reason he always decides to take on a human (or earlier, animal) avatar-not to try to save the world and to redeem humanity from sinning, but to help people, to teach them, to be a hero when a very horrible time is upon the world and they need someone to get rid of that evil (in this instance, Krishna's evil uncle Kamsa, and in the incarnation just prior to Krishna, the horrible demon king Ravana).I find it really beautiful, touching, and true what Krishna says to his dear friend Arjuna during the course of the sermon which has come to be known as the Bhagavad Gita. He, Krishna, Vishnu, has many names and forms to many different people; one need not be a Hindu to properly worship him or to find enlightenment. However one sees the Divine, be it Krishna, Jesus, the Tao, Great Spirit, the Goddess, the traditional Western view of God, kanji, local spirits, a special rock, even the broader realms of Nature or Science, is how he will come to that person, and in that guise he is being worshipped. Krishna acknowledges that there are many paths to him, none of them incorrect if approached with a pure and devout heart. If only more people would care to learn this beautiful ancient story, there might be less religious intolerance and bigotry in the world and more love and understanding. If God can understand that all of these different religions ultimately lead up to the same Divinity, then why can't ordinary human beings?”The many faces of the Divine, April 25, 2004, Anyechka (Rensselaer, NY United States)
