In this episode, I sit down with Marielle Melling to explore the invisible forces driving our least favorite parenting moments and how to interrupt them. We dive deep into the gap between knowing better and actually doing better, discussing what Marielle calls our "bottom underlying truth" (BUT)—what we're really making important in heated moments with our teens. Marielle shares practical, actionable tools for pausing before reacting and aligning our actions with our deepest values. If you want to move from reactive to intentional parenting and create the connection you truly desire with your teen, this conversation offers real clarity and transformative steps you can start using today. Marielle Melling is a parent educator, author, and founder of Extraordinary Family Relationships who helps parents move from conflict to connection with their teens. With a degree in health education and as a mom of five (ages 7-17), she brings both professional expertise and real-life experience to her work. Marielle is the author of Peace Amidst the Mayhem and The BUT Book, which explores the gap between what parents know and what they actually do in challenging moments. Through her relatable teaching style and genuine care, she guides parents to discover their "bottom underlying truth"—what truly matters most—so they can respond intentionally rather than reactively. Marielle also hosts an annual parenting summit and runs The Mom Spot membership, where she supports parents in transforming ordinary family relationships into extraordinary ones through deep connection and radical self-acceptance. Hope Hopkinson talks to director Athina Rachel Tsangari and actor Herry Melling about their new film, Harvest. The latest feature from celebrated filmmaker Athina Rachel Tsangari (Chevalier, Attenberg), HARVEST is a spellbinding and thrillingly distinctive period piece like no other. Telling a story steeped in folk horror, and featuring another strikingly memorable performance from Caleb Landry Jones (Nitram), Tsangari presents a study of superstition, the trauma of modernity, and the looming threat of the outsider. Set over seven hallucinatory days in an undefined era, an idyllic rural Scottish village with no name faces a period of great uncertainty when the community's traditional way of life is suddenly disrupted by seismic economic turmoil. Townsman-turned-farmer Walter Thirsk (Landry Jones) and local landowner Master Kent (Harry Melling, The Tragedy of Macbeth) are childhood friends who lay witness to a series of unexpected invaders from the outside world, whose arrival brings about irrevocable – and potentially damaging – change. Adapted from Jim Crace's Booker Prize-nominated novel and co-starring Rosy McEwen, Arinzé Kene, Thalissa Teixeira, and Frank Dillane, HARVEST is an eerie, atmospheric and deeply immersive cinematic experience, blending beautifully textured storytelling with an exploration of what happens when people decide what a society should be. He's here to chat about the latest in a hit parade of pleasingly weird and wonderful post-Potter projects, ‘Harvest'. This trippy period piece sees a mysterious feudal society in an unspecified place and time fall apart after crops fail and sinister strangers arrive. Simon unpacks this unique film with Harry—plus a bit of Potter chat since the HBO reboot has put the wizarding world back in the spotlight. Mark reviews Harvest too—along with two more of this week's biggest cinema releases: ‘Friendship'--a black comedy about male bonding starring Paul Rudd as the new-best-pal-next-door, and ‘Smurfs'--the latest big-screen outing for the little blue fellas. In 2016, Molly Howard, Valerie Macaulay and Meredith Melling launched the fashion brand La Ligne determined to do fashion and business differently. For their part, Macaulay and Melling had been Vogue editors for years and had grown tired of brands "that felt like they had to reinvent themselves season after season," according to Howard. Meanwhile, Howard had spent a couple of years working long hours in investment banking for Credit Suisse. At the time, she'd decided that, when her time came to run a company, she'd give everyone a voice by doing away with traditional hierarchies. What's more, she'd start the workday at 10 a.m. Now CEO of La Ligne, Howard's made good on those promises, she said on the latest episode of the Glossy Podcast. And Macaulay and Melling have successfully disrupted the fashion system by fulfilling their desire for a "timeless, democratic" brand. La Ligne's pieces center on the classic stripe pattern, yet the brand offers plenty of versatility — it even sells denim. Howard, Macaulay and Melling were first introduced after a common acquaintance noticed that they were all consulting brands but in very different ways: Howard was offering business assistance, while Macaulay and Melling were supporting creative teams. Since coming together to launch La Ligne, their complementing strengths have served the business well. For one, the brand just launched its fifth retail location, in Marin County, California, plus it's currently expanding internationally. And, it's worth noting, its styles were “Anna Wintour's preferred Covid attire,” said Howard, referencing images of the Vogue editor during lockdown.

Transport Minister Michael Wood has left the door open to delaying the delivery of some of New Zealand's most high-profile roading projects. They include widening the southern motorway from Papakura to Drury south of Auckland and the Ōtaki to north of Levin expressway. The government is “rescoping” projects in the $8.7 billion NZ Upgrade programme, which includes 19 high-profile transport projects. The projects were announced back in 2020 but massive cost blowouts saw several of the most high-profile roads axed in 2021 despite a $1.9b cash injection. It comes after an appeal to the Ombudsman revealed many of the projects face “red” ratings for their potential to go over budget. Upgrade roads include Auckland's Penlink, and Wellington's Ōtaki to North of Levin (O2NL) and the Melling interchange, and Tauranga's Takitimu North Link. Wood was keen to say there would be no cuts to the programme this time, but has not taken back some trimming of the projects and rephasing to deal with cost inflation. “The Government is committed to delivering the significant transport projects that are funded through NZUP,” Wood said. “There will be no cuts or significant paring back, but as is always the case there will be work to find efficiencies as projects go through detailed design and implementation. Waka Kotahi warned projects are likely to go over budget. Photo / Waka Kotahi An announcement is expected on the future of the programme in the weeks following the Budget. No decisions have been made on whether the projects will need an additional cash injection. “Many NZUP projects are already in delivery. Confirmed arrangements for the final few large projects will be confirmed in the near future,” Wood said. National's transport spokesman Simeon Brown said the Govenment needed to “come clean about the status of the NZ Upgrade programme” “These are roads they cancelled and then promised and now they look like they may be cancelled again. “Labour misled New Zealanders when they committed to this programme of works. They already cancelled Mill Road and Whangārei to Port Marsden,” Brown said. “Labour can't be trusted with roads,” he said. In February, Waka Kotahi NZ Transport Agency chief executive Nicole Rosie confirmed in a select committee some of the projects were being “rescoped”. When asked by Brown whether more money was needed to deliver the entire NZUP, Rosie said that if Waka Kotahi did not know the “scope” of the projects it was impossible to know if they needed more funding. “If we don't know the scope, we can't tell you the answer to that,” Rosie said. “In reality the Government has been very clear that it wants to operate within the envelope that's available to them, so the rescoping is around looking at how they can continue on those projects within the money that's available,” she said. Waka Kotahi provides regular reporting on the health of the projects. Details from these reports were withheld from Official Information Act requests, but a successful appeal to the Ombudsman by Brown and the National Party has seen details released. The report, already nearly a year old, but released by the Ombudsman this year, gave each of the transport projects a health rating on a traffic light scale for their propensity to go over budget or over time. Roads like Penlink, were given a “green” rating for all criteria, but roads like Ōtaki to north of Levin or the Melling interchange were given “red” ratings for their likelihood to go over budget. - Thomas Coughlan, NZ HeraldSee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Christian Bale (“I'm Batman”)! Harry Melling (yes, cousin Dudley)! Toby Jones (character actor in, like, everything)! Timothy Spall (yes, Wormtail)! We had great expectations for this film. It is a good mystery, and two of us enjoyed it. It just didn't get all the stars we had hoped to give it.“The Pale Blue Eye” follows Bale's Augustus Landor as he investigates a gruesome murder at West Point. He is assisted by cadet Edgar Allan Poe. Yes, “quoth the Raven, ‘nevermore'” Poe.The film is atmospherically lovely. Beautiful music by Howard Shore (“LOTR,” “The Hobbit,” “The Departed,” “The Aviator”). And the story is twisty. Nice! Melling is perfect as Edgar Allan Poe. He has totally moved beyond the bullying Dudley.Check out this SPOILERIFIC episode to find out what we loved and didn't love. Lane closures were needed on State Highway 59, near Porirua, and State Highway 2, near Melling in Lower Hutt, after slips on both roads yesterday morning. The transport authority says that things "should be" back to normal for motorists today. You probably wouldn't expect the President and CEO of an artificial intelligence and machine learning company to say that focusing on technology alone does not guarantee the success of the business. But it is the case for Gary L. Melling of Acquired Insights. In this episode of Leaders of Consulting, Gary emphasizes that as much as businesses would want to focus on technology, they should also understand how such technology will be useful to their people. He also shares the backstory of how he began to focus on the people side of organizational change management, and how he adds a personal touch in interacting with colleagues. Moreover, he discusses the role of Continuity Risk Assessment in identifying the factors that can threaten a business and its continuity. The country's cycleway building programme faces a tough choice - to defer, delay or blowout on projects. Documents released under the OIA show it's not just pandemic pressures but basic mistakes driving up costs. Such as at the beleaguered Petone to Melling cycleway in Lower Hutt that has ballooned to more than 20 million dollars per kilometre due to planners forgetting things, little investigation and a million dollar 'clerical error'. Phil Pennington is looking into this.
