One of the scariest things for scientists is watching entertainment media portray your field of study inaccurately—the horror! Flood resilience officer and social volcanologist Jazmin Scarlett turned her hobby of playing video games into a paper discussing the depictions of volcanic hazards in games such as Pokémon, LEGO DC Super Villains, and Shadow of the Tomb Raider. The typical video game volcano nearly always has molten lava, but would these games be even more fun to play if they incorporated fissure eruptions, pyroclastic flows, and the dangerous effects of ash and toxic gasses? Jazmin talked with us about her views on natural disasters in fiction media, what scares her about volcanoes, and why she left volcanology to work on flood resilience with the UK's Environment Agency. This episode was produced by Katrina Jackson and mixed by Collin Warren. Art by Jace Steiner.

There has been a rise of the term soft black romance in the Black reading space of late and yeah, what is it exactly? Taima and Sharonda have thoughts...per usual lols. Is this term another way of talking down on Urban romance and other aspects of Blackness or are the book girlies really trying to come up with another sub genre of romance? Well, we discuss it here.

Every year between June and November, researchers take to the skies to better understand and measure hurricanes. Heather Holbach is part of NOAA's Hurricane Research division and is one of the scientists on the flight team who gets up close and personal with hurricanes. Flying directly into the eye of the storm gives her insight and information, that tracking the storms on the ground doesn't. This field work is essential for informing forecasting models and the response on the ground. This episode was produced by Katrina Jackson and mixed by Collin Warren. Artwork by Jace Steiner.

Seismologist Margaret Boettcher has ventured to the depths of South African gold mines and the middle of the Pacific Ocean in a quest to find earthquakes that are predictable enough to measure and simple enough to understand. Performing fieldwork in these locations presents unusual challenges, such as being so crammed in an elevator shaft with miners that Margaret's feet couldn't touch the bottom, and dredging rocks from the seafloor using a bucket on a 3.5-kilometer-long cable. On Margaret's most recent series of expeditions to the Gofar transform fault 1,500 kilometers west of the Galapagos Islands, she and many of her team members couldn't even join the cruises due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Instead, they worked out ways to participate remotely, which had the added benefit of opening up the research to more people. This episode was produced by Katrina Jackson and mixed by Collin Warren. We all know the saying “history repeats itself” but to what extent is that true when it comes to Earth's climate? In order to understand and even predict future climates, transitions from one historical climate state to another can be mathematically modeled by atmospheric scientists like Dr. Matthew Huber. However, there's something special about how anthropogenic climate change is impacting climate transitions, and it's Dr. Huber's job to capture this oddity with math! This episode was produced by Katrina Jackson and mixed by Collin Warren. Artwork by Jace Steiner. Find a companion to this episode from our friends over at Carry the Two.
We've all probably heard about how climate change is affecting the ice sheets and polar bears, but what about human health? More severe and numerous floods, droughts, and heat waves impact a wide range of health outcomes, and shifting biomes may spread diseases to new places. How do scientists understand which portions of health effects are caused by climate change, and how can health organizations be prepared? To find out, we talked with Kristie Ebi, who founded the Center for Health and the Global Environment (CHanGE) at the University of Washington. In addition to the effects of climate change, Kris told us about how many of the mitigations for climate change—e.g. switching from coal to renewable power sources, creating more environmentally-friendly transportation systems, and reducing meat in our diets—will coincidentally improve public health. She also introduced us to the rap stylings of Baba Brinkman, whose song “Climate Hero” summarizes several of the points Kris made in our episode. This episode was produced by Katrina Jackson and mixed by Collin Warren. Artwork by Jace Steiner. Find a companion to this episode from our friends over at Carry the Two. “Climate Hero” and other science raps by Baba Brinkman will be released via Spotify and other streaming services soon on a forthcoming science rap album, which can be previewed here: https://music.bababrinkman.com/album/rapsode.

Join Black Romance authors Katrina Jackson and Elysabeth Grace as they discuss writing Black historical romance. The authors engage the question of readerly and publishing perceptions about the place of African/African diaspora love in historical spaces. For Black romance authors, what does it entail to represent Black love within historical romance? Questions of colorism, sexuality, class, and gender affect perceptions of historical romance fiction. Is historical fiction or women's fiction the only way to write Black love? Can a genealogy and reading practice for Black historical romance emerge? A genealogy that encourages writers and readers (including agents, publishers, reviewers) to consider different frames of reading the idea of authenticity? The conversation attempts to move beyond the Eurocentric/American focus to look at the role of Black subjectivity (not individualism) as integral to Black historical romance. Finally, the authors seek to encourage Black romance authors and readers, and the wider romance community to re-imagine their relationship to historical romance in general, and Black historical romance in particular. Think about what types of things burn: wood, grasses, fossil fuels… mostly things that were formed by life. Fire also requires oxygen, which is largely produced by life. Did Earth have fire before life evolved? Could any other planets have fire? If there were an exoplanet with fires burning, would we have any way to detect that? To explore these questions, we talked with astrobiologist Antígona Segura Peralta from the Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México. Though there probably has never been fire anywhere else in our solar system, Antígona told us about other hot-and-glowing types of phenomena that could exist on planets. For example, volcanic lightning on early Mars might have provided energy for the origin of Martian life. It's an exciting time for astrobiology, and scientists like Antígona are able to make increasing progress toward understanding the potential for life on other worlds. In the process, we're learning what makes Earth special. And it seems like fire might be something we'll never find outside our home planet. This episode was produced by Katrina Jackson and mixed by Collin Warren. Illustration by Jace Steiner.
With a heliophysics career spanning across nearly five decades, Thomas Earle Moore has always been fascinated by the Sun's relationship with the Earth and how that relationship affects life on our planet. The impacts of space weather can be super noticeable when it results in brilliant auroras or large radiation storms that send astronauts scrambling for cover. But Thom also advocates for studies of longer-timescale phenomena, many of which are poorly understood. For example, Earth's magnetic field periodically reverses, but no one knows exactly how or why, or when the next reversal will be, or what consequences might ensue when it does. Now that some of these studies are finally getting funded, Thom hopes the next generation of heliophysicists will take up the mantle (maybe literally?) and explore Earth's long-term future. This episode was produced by Katrina Jackson and mixed by Collin Warren. Dani DellaGiustina is one of the youngest leaders of a NASA mission, and she was in charge of image processing for OSIRIS-REx before she even got her PhD. OSIRIS-REx is a spacecraft sent to study asteroid Bennu and scheduled to return a sample to Earth in 2023. Dani walks us through the difference between asteroids and comets—it turns out there's some overlap! There's even a thing called “extinct comets,” and some think Bennu might be one, but Dani isn't so sure. Along the way, Dani tells us about her non-traditional career path and attempts to avoid polar bears in Greenland. This episode was produced by Katrina Jackson and mixed by Collin Warren.

In this episode, we discuss Katrina Jackson's MMF erotic romance, Room for Three?: “When Precious rents Cali and Mike's spare bedroom she's in the middle of a housing crisis and feeling betrayed by her best friend. When Mike and Cali rent their spare room to Precious, their relationship is hanging on by a thread. None of them expect anything more from their roommate situation than cheap rent in a prime location. So they're all surprised to find a deep well of affection and lust that makes them think that maybe their perfect relationship, and bed, has room for three. Room for Three? is the first in a new series of erotic novellas about sexy entanglements behind closed doors.” This sultry and sensual book was so much fun to read, and was the catalyst for some great discussions about non-traditional relationships, communication, and, of course, threesomes. We also talk about the benefits of audio porn, sexual insecurities, and much more in this episode! Hi friends! This is Make Out Already, where we review, dissect and fan cast romance novels and share our love for any media with an HEA. On this episode, we discuss Office Hours by Katrina Jackson. So for whatever reason, Meg and I were in the mood for something angsty, and this sweet workplace romance with a burnt out tenure track sociology professor and her immaculately dressed colleague was not the least bit angsty. So while we went into this one with the wrong mindset, we did love the heroine and found her experiences painfully relatable. Spoilers ahead! Today's guest is Katrina Jackson, best-selling writer of over twenty novels. She joins me to discuss her prolific career. Katrina discusses some of her early reading practices, writing her first romance, a self-published book titled Encore, and why she publishes affirming images of Black women. She also recounts how her life as a pre and post tenured historian in the Academy informs some of her novels' themes. She and I also discuss several of her books: From Scratch, Office Hours, The Hitman, Encore, Grand Theft New Year's Eve, and her current release Back in the Day. An Associate Professor of history, Katrina is a college professor by day who writes romances by weekend when her cats allow. She writes high heat, diverse and mostly queer erotic romances and erotica. She can be reached at @katrinajax. Thanks to @cbddepaul and @romancewriters for sponsoring this podcast. The eighth good bit. In this erotic excerpt from 'The Hitman' by Katrina Jackson, one woman on holiday finds herself in an unexpected threesome.... all by herself. The hitman in the next room has the waitress to keep him occupied, but his thoughts are only for The Angry American. This hot sex story is presented by thegoodbits.com. "I don't even think. I crawl to the head of the bed and settle against the pile of pillows. I press myself against the wall I apparently share with some unknown couple fucking each other like rabbits in the middle of the day. When I'm this close to the wall, I can hear their whines and panting breaths." Erotica has been proven to inspire desire, and using sound and storytelling The Good Bits creates a new and distinct erotic world in each episode. From romantic encounters to passionate sex, from masturbation to menage and lesbian sex, these tales of audio erotica are designed to make you feel good. The Good Bits is no ordinary audio porn. These free sex stories are written by bestselling authors, and each one is produced to create its own seductive soundscape. Erotic audio allows listeners to immerse themselves in a fantasy world, while inspiring desire in the real world. Enhance pleasure and improve your libido with the good bits from some of the world's best erotic literature. Katrina Jackson is a college professor by day, and romance author by night. This episode, I'm joined by author Katrina Jackson to discuss Barbarian's Tease, the 15th book in the Ice Planet Barbarians series. And, whew! Brook and Taushen really tested us in this one. They basically that one Katy Perry song. They're also kind of dumb.
Katrina Jackson writes the types of stories that she would want to read, you know, with fat black girls and masturbation scenes. Karen and Princess talked to her about writing journey from fan fiction to published author with a bookshelf of titles. We also commiserated on pushing for diversity as a black queer woman and by the end, we became best friends. Check Katrina out on Twitter at @katrinajax and pre-order Bright Lights on Amazon!
