The Portland Timbers and Thorns front office has a new leader: former general counsel Heather Davis. Davis makes history as the club's first female CEO and the fifth woman leading a MLS front office, and she comes into the job with plenty of challenges after 16 consecutive months of scandal for PTFC. She will preside over the business and operations of the Timbers and — until Merritt Paulson sells — the Thorns. On this week's episode of Soccer Made in Portland, co-hosts Ryan Clarke and Chris Rifer sit down for an interview with Davis to discuss her vision for the club's future, how she squares the failures of Paulson and his past executives, her plans to reach out to Timbers and Thorns supporters, and her unique journey back home to Oregon. Merritt Paulson, owner of the Portland Thorns and Timbers, announced Thursday that he will sell the women's soccer team but maintain ownership of the men's team. Fans have been calling for Paulson to sell both teams — even before a recent report outlining the Portland club's role in systemic abuse and misconduct in the national women's soccer league. Paulson said that he would donate $1 million to create a Player Safety Department in the NWSL. Although head coach Rhian Wilkinson was cleared of potential wrongdoing in the report, on Friday she announced her resignation after self-disclosing that she and another player had expressed feelings for each other. Ryan Clarke is the Timbers and Thorns correspondent for The Oregonian/Oregonlive and hosts the “Soccer Made in Portland” podcast. It's Rivalry Week in the MLS!  Yay.  We're also a week out from the league deciding to provide a safe gameday experience for fascists and their families.  In response to that tone deaf but Merican decision, fan groups from the Portland Timbers and Seattle Sounders engaged in a form of protest that was organized, intelligent and didn't harm one hair on the head of a precious child fascist. That didn't stop the owner's son, ally when convenient, Merritt Paulson, from blaming the Timbers loss, white genocide and The Office leaving Netflix on their nonviolent protest.  Wayne Rooney's Great American Odyssey is on its last legs and the British media will have you believe he's up to his old party boy antics again.  The Sun captured him and a few teammates relaxing prior to their 12 hour Commerical flight that could be done in 6, at a Vancouver night spot. Wayne was enjoying conversation with a few coed MLS fans, catching a limo with them and having a conversation in his hotel lobby, near an elevator door. The boys have seen enough and its time to help.  In our new segment The Therapists, Mario, Pat and Devon walk through Wayne's most recent transgressions and try to provide some words of wisdom for Wayne, Coleen and the health of their relationships.  In England Mauricio Pochettino is a bit frustrated.  They lost to Newcastle in front of the White Wall, the media are questioning him about team selection and they are already looking up at Manchester City and Liverpool.  Match day 3 also blessed us with Mo Salah turning David Luiz into gazpacho and two goals by young Brits so impressive Boris Johnson needed to suspend Parliament.  In WTF Bro, Wesley Sneijder retired from professional Football two weeks ago and he's already gotten himself into Merican shape.  Red Star Belgrade brings a tank to a tailgate, Vincent Kompany's struggling back home and we do our best to keep Marysville as white as possible on another installment of The Set Piece

We then turn our attentions to the actual on field product - where the Timbers are at this season, the battle for LA, & why Zlatan hasn't been the greatest for the league as he should. Ships then sail across the Atlantic as we hit the Premier League, with focus on our respective teams following the Liverpool 3-1 Arsenal match. We discuss the EPL, Champions League favourites, & which teams want which competition more. Finishing off with some banter as Shea gets used to his new environs for footy watching on the East Coast. We’re back to talk about Orlando City’s third straight victory and no, that isn’t a typo. The Lions went into Philadelphia and brought back three points to the City Beautiful but they did not — I repeat, did not — bring me any cheesesteaks. That’s OK, I’d rather have the points. Dom Dwyer and Chris Mueller did the damage on the scoreboard and Joe Bendik stood tall in goal to keep the clean sheet. Speaking of Bendik, he’s our guest this week. We chatted Joe up about playing with so many new defenders, his leadership role with the team, the chemistry and energy of the 2018 Lions, his favorite save, and a lot more. We also discuss the Pride’s loss at Portland and the huge loss Thorns owner Merritt Paulson took on social media this week. Plus, our listener questions in our Ask The Mane Land PawedCast mailbag, and and our key match-ups and score predictions for Orlando City’s match Saturday night against the San Jose Earthquakes.
